Sunday Scripture Reflections Reading 1 Isaiah 66:18-21 The first reading from Isaiah was written after the return from exile in 538 BC The aim was to console the returned exiles, who were depressed when they saw the sad state of Jerusalem and the poverty of the country. Isaiah foretold the future glory of Jerusalem to which people of all nations would come. It would be the center from which the knowledge of the true God would be dispersed. In this reading we again are told that we must expect hardships; that it is part of our training and we cannot win the race unless we undergo this training.

The author quotes a couple of proverbs that talk about discipline of self and even of one's son or daughter. The point here is that trials, disappointments and even suffering might be the Lord's way of getting our attention. So, instead of praying or saying, “Why me, Lord” perhaps we should be asking the Lord, “What are you saying to me in this situation? Help me to hear you clearly”. Remember, He wants us to win the eternal prize because he loves us; he is our Father.

At first reading, this Gospel passage is missing some of the hopeful words we read elsewhere about God’s love for us and all of creation spending eternity in the Kingdom.

In this Gospel we read that the door is narrow, that not many people will get through it, and once it’s shut, there’s no opening it again.
