SAME-SEX MARRIAGE
Liberal Euthanasia should be legalized. A person has a right to die with dignity, by his own choice. A terminally ill person should have the right to choose to end pain and suffering. It is wrong for the government to take away the means for a terminally ill person to hasten his death. It is wrong to force a person to go through so much pain and suffering. Legalizing euthanasia would not lead to doctor-assisted suicides of non-critical patients. Permitting euthanasia would reduce health care costs, which would then make funds available for those who could truly benefit from medical care.
Liberal Marriage is the union of people who love each other. It should be legal for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals, to ensure equal rights for all. Support same-sex marriage. Opposed to the creation of a constitutional amendment establishing marriage as the union of one man and one woman. All individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, have the right to marry. Prohibiting same-sex citizens from marrying denies them their civil rights. (Opinions vary on whether this issue is equal to civil rights for African Americans.)
Conservative Neither euthanasia nor physician-assisted suicide should be legalized. It is immoral and unethical to deliberately end the life of a terminally ill person (euthanasia), or enable another person to end their own life (assisted suicide). The goal should be compassionate care and easing the suffering of terminally ill people. Legalizing euthanasia could lead to doctor-assisted suicides of non-critical patients. If euthanasia were legalized, insurance companies could pressure doctors to withhold life-saving treatment for dying patients. Many religions prohibit suicide and euthanasia. These practices devalue human life.
Conservative Marriage is the union of one man and one woman. Oppose same-sex marriage. Support Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), passed in 1996, which affirms the right of states not to recognize same-sex marriages licensed in other states. Requiring citizens to sanction same-sex relationships violates moral and religious beliefs of millions of Christians, Jews, Muslins and others, who believe marriage is the union of one man and one woman. GUN CONTROL Liberal The Second Amendment does not give citizens the right to keep and bear arms, but only allows for the state to keep a militia (National Guard). Individuals do not need guns for protection; it is the role of local and federal government to protect the people through law enforcement agencies and the military. Additional gun control laws are necessary to stop gun violence and limit the ability of criminals to obtain guns. More guns mean more violence.
Liberal Due to prevalent racism in the past, minorities were deprived of the same education and employment opportunities as whites. The government must work to make up for that. America is still a racist society, therefore a federal affirmative action law is necessary. Due to unequal opportunity, minorities still lag behind whites in all statistical measurements of success.

Domingo Escritura Reflexions Primera lectura Zacarías 12:10-11; 13:1
The first reading is from the prophet Zechariah whose initial prophecy is dated around the year 520 B.C. It begins the oracle proclaiming the victory of God’s people. The blessings that will be poured out on Jerusalem come through the suffering of "him whom they have pierced." There will be mourning, but also purification from sin and uncleanness.
La primera lectura es tomada del capítulo 12 del libro del profeta Zacarías, cuya primera profecía data del año 520 antes de Cristo. Empieza con el oráculo que proclama la victoria del pueblo de Dios. Las bendiciones que derrama sobre Jerusalén llegan por medio del que sufre, "él que es traspasado". Habrá luto pero también purificación y limpieza del pecado.
One cannot help but think of Jerusalem today and the mourning that takes place daily in the midst of divisions and wars. Where is the "spirit of grace"? It remains, of course, for God never abandons his people. The spirit of God’s grace lives in the hearts of those who have mourned for all those who have known suffering and even death in the Holy City. Grace abounds in those who work ceaselessly for peace against tremendous odds. Pray that God’s grace will be poured out on the people of Jerusalem and on all God’s people who know mourning.
Uno no puede dejar de pensar en Jerusalén hoy día y el luto que tiene lugar diariamente en medio de divisiones y guerras. ¿Dónde está el "espíritu de gracia"? Galatians 3:26-29
In this letter to the Galatians, Paul is writing to the people he converted from paganism to Christianity. He writes to correct some of the errors that have been presented to the Galatians by those Jews who believed that any convert must follow Jewish laws--circumcision and other obligations. Paul proclaims that faith in Jesus Christ and Baptism make all one in Christ, regardless of one’s former state.

Luke 9:18-24
Today’s Gospel from Luke is perhaps one of the most poignant accounts of Jesus. Before this exchange with his disciples, Jesus has already cured the possessed man, cured Simon Peter’s mother-in-law, cured the leper, taught the multitude about God’s love, healed the paralytic, healed the centurion’s slave, raised the widow’s son from death, pardoned the sinful woman, calmed the storm at sea, healed the Gerasene demoniac and Jairus’ daughter and the woman with the hemorrhage. He had fed the 5,000 men plus women and children with 5 loaves and 2 fish. Now, he is in praying in solitude and the disciples are with him. He asks, "Who do the crowds say that I am?" Then, the Gospel says, he said, "But who do you say that I am?" Today, we might reflect on that same question that Jesus asks, "Who do you say that I am?" and how shall we respond?

FATHER’S DAY Today is the day when we, in the United States, celebrate and honor all of our fathers and father figures, both living and deceased. It is an occasion to mark and acknowledge the contributions fathers have made to family life. There are a range of events, which may have inspired the idea of Father’s Day. One of these was the start of the Mother's Day tradition in the first decade of the 20th Century. Another was a memorial service held in 1908 for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in December 1907. A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd, was an influential figure in the establishment of Father’s Day. Her father raised six children by himself after the death of their mother. This was uncommon at that time, as many widowers placed their children in the care of others or quickly married again. Sonora felt that her father deserved recognition for what he had done. The first time Father’s Day was held was in June , 1910. Father’s Day was officially recognized as a holiday in 1972 by President Nixon. It is not a federal holiday and there are no general closures or changes in system schedules. It is a relatively modern holiday so different families have evolved their own traditions to celebrate the occasion; from a simple phone call , gift, or greeting card to large dinners and parties. Whatever way we choose to celebrate Father’s Day - Remember: to thank them to pray for them and to thank God for their presence in our lives. *********************** We give our thanks Creator God, for the fathers in our lives. We ask for Your blessings for them all. This Father’s Day we remember the many sacrifices fathers make for their children and families, and the ways – both big and small – they lift children to achieve dreams thought beyond reach. So too, we remember all those who have helped fill the void when fathers pass early or are absent – grandfathers and uncles, brothers and cousins, teachers, pastors and coaches – and the women of our families. For those who are fathers, we ask for wisdom and humility in the face of the task of parenting. Give them the strength to do well by their children and by You.
