Fourth Sunday of Advent
The fourth candle is lit …… 4th Candle is Thee Angel Candle or The Candle of Love & it symbolizes Peace. The angel announced the good news of a Savior…. “ I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, The Lord” (Luke 2:10b-11). God sent his only Son to earth to save us, because he loves us! “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17) When there is a 5th Candle, it is white and placed in the center of the wreath. This is the Christ Candle and is lit on Christmas. The white candle reminds us that Jesus is the spotless lamb of God, sent to wash away our sins! His birth was for his death, his death was for our birth! “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’”

Emmanuel, God-with-us, today I contemplate the gift of your love made visible. On Christmas, you are born anew as one of us. In this reading, God has invited King Ahaz into friendship, but Ahaz has already allied himself with human powers and refuses to “ask for a sign from the Lord.”
En esta lectura, Dios ha invitado el rey Achâz en amistad, pero Acaz ya se alió con los poderes humanos y se niega a "pedir un signo del Señor". El Señor, entonces, suministra una señal de que seguirá la línea de David; la promesa de Dios a David será cumplida por el futuro de un nuevo rey ideal para ser llamado Emmanuel, "Dios con nosotros".
The Lord, then, supplies a sign that David’s line will continue,; God’s promise to David will be fulfilled by the future coming of a new, ideal king to be named Immanuel,”God is with us”.
Reading 2 Romans 1:1-7 Paul proclaims to the Church in Rome the “gospel of God”, the good news of salvation through the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. By proclaiming that his message fulfills the promise of the scriptures, the Apostle underscores its authenticity. Jesus is revealed as the long-awaited “Son of David”, the ideal ruler who inaugurates God’s final reign over all things. In raising Jesus from death, God further reveals Christ as “Son of God” in a new sense; he is not only an earthly king adopted by God, but shares the fullness of divine Spirit. Paul announces that this Christ who fulfills Israel’s Scriptures called him to proclaim the astonishing message: Jesus, Son of David and Son of God, realizes the hopes of Gentiles as well. All are called to be holy in Christ Jesus, for all are called to belong to him.
Gospel Matthew 1:18-24 `The difficult circumstances described in today’s Gospel and the way that Joseph and Mary face them tells us much about these holy people and their faith in God. Joseph and Mary are betrothed to be married. Betrothal in first century Jewish culture was in fact the first part of the marriage contract. A breach of this contract was considered adultery. Mary is found to be with child. If adultery is proven, the punishment might be death. Joseph has rights under Mosaic law, but chooses to act discreetly in his plans to break the marriage contract, so as to protect Mary. Then God intervenes. The message of the angel of the Lord given to Joseph in his dream tells us much about the child that Mary bears and his role in God’s plan. He is conceived by the Holy Spirit. His name will be Jesus, which in the Hebrew means “Yahweh Saves”. He will be the fulfillment of the prophecy from Isaiah. Joseph does as the angel of the Lord directs. He takes Mary to be his wife and accepts the child in her womb as his own. Both Joseph and Mary are cooperative with God’s plan and models for us of what it means to be faithful servants of God.
