There are two sections to this reading and both are important for conveying its full message. First is the idolatry. Nothing in the Old Testament was as persistent or as hard to eradicate as this grave sin. Consistently God’s people allowed this cancer to grow to the point that God was forced to intervene. God became passionate about this weakness. He focused on infidelity; a deep down lack of trust in the God who numerous times had demonstrated unconditional love and loyalty. The second section includes Moses' intercession and God’s change of mind. God is persuaded and relents because it’s in God's nature to do so. Ours is a God of mercy. Reading 2 1 Timothy 1:12-17

St. Paul seldom hesitates to draw lessons from the circumstances of his own life. Hiding nothing, Paul willingly admits his past. And he is grateful that God chose him for “the ministry” despite having been its most ardent opponent. He declares with great assurance that Jesus came for people like him. Paul is happy to serve as an “example” of God’s mercy . In his ministry he could say - “If God could show such mercy to one like me, why would you question that he could be merciful to you?”
Lectura 2 1 Timoteo 1:12-17
Gospel Luke 15:1-32 In this Gospel story Jesus tells 3 parables about losing, finding and rejoicing. In the first parable of The Lost Sheep, the shepherd leaves behind 99 sheep to search for the one lost sheep. When he finds it there is much rejoicing . In the same way, God rejoices over 1 sinner who repents. The second parable about the poor woman who will not stop searching until she finds her lost coin, makes the same point. The 3rd parable, The Prodigal Son, is really about the seeker, the loving father. Even though the son runs off with his father’s inheritance and squanders the money, the father waits and hopes for his return. Upon the son’s return the father, “full of compassion”, runs out to embrace and forgive him before the son can utter one word of repentance. And then the rejoicing begins. The older son, who never left, feels righteous and refuses to join in the rejoicing. The father’s response teaches us that God’s care and compassion extends to the righteous and sinner alike. When we are lost, God doesn’t wait for our return. He actively seeks us out. And when the lost are found, how could we not celebrate and rejoice?

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 14, 2016 THE FEAST OF THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS This Feast celebrated every year on September 14, recalls three historical events: - the finding of the True Cross by St. Helena, the mother of the emperor Constantine; - the dedication of churches built by Constantine on the site of the Holy Sepulcher and Mount Calvary; - and the restoration of the True Cross to Jerusalem by the emperor Heraclius II after the conquering Persians had taken it to Persia. But in a deeper sense, the feast also celebrates the Holy Cross as the instrument of our salvation. This instrument of torture, designed to degrade the worst of criminals, became the life-giving tree that reversed Adam’s original sin when he ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden. For Christians the Cross is the crossroads of history and the Tree of Life. Christianity without the Cross is meaningless. Only by uniting ourselves to Christ’s Sacrifice on the Cross can we enter into eternal life.
