In response to an attempt to ridicule his teaching about life after death, Jesus again proclaims a resurrection of the dead, that life is indeed stronger than death itself. This is our eternal consolation and hope. Then will our joy be truly complete. Reading 1 2Maccabees 7:1-2,9-14 This first reading presents a remarkable story of brothers who willingly sacrifice their lives rather than defy God’s law that forbade the eating of pork . While intriguing in its depiction of heroic fidelity, the story’s most important feature is each brother’s profession of faith in a life beyond this one. Each brother is a martyr and a noble figure even when speaking words of condemnation. Their words are not words of vengeance but acts of faith that acknowledge God’s mercy on those who are faithful and God’s judgment on those who mock God. Reading 2

Today’s straightforward text was addressed to Christians who had been instructed to anticipate the return of Christ during their lifetime. When that did not occur, they had to set about the far more difficult task of being the Body of Christ and how to live faithfully that Christian life. Paul starts with prayer for everything depends on prayer and prayer establishes our relationship with God. His opening remarks demonstrate that prayer is not a listing of wants and needs but an exchange of “love” and a dialogue of “hearts” that strengthens us for “every good deed and word.”

In today’s Gospel we hear about an encounter between Jesus and the Sadducees. The Sadducees are described as opponents to the belief in resurrection and set out to trap Jesus by citing the Law of Moses.

The following is to help us respond to our choices in the current political landscape. While there are many moral issues before us, every issue is not equal. i Issues that directly affect human lives—such as i

abortion and euthanasia—are fundamental and demand serious consideration. Religious liberty—our Constitution heralds religious liberty in the First Amendment, yet increasingly people of faith are having to fight to retain this basic right. Marriage– there is a move in the nation to redefine marriage. The marriage of a man and a woman is the foundation of the family and an essential core element of a flourishing society. Growing disparity between rich and poor– means most of the world’s resources are in the hands of a small percentage of its people. The federal budget is a moral document and must prioritize the poorest & most vulnerable among us. Millions of undocumented persons-living in the United States deserve our compassion. There is an immigration problem, and we need a humane solution to it. War, terror & violence - have caused thousands of lost lives. We must work for just solutions to conflict in the Holy Land, throughout the Middle East, and beyond.
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 11, 2016 VETERANS DAY A PRAYER IN HONOR OF ALL VETERANS Heavenly Father, thank You for America’s heroes who have served our country so faithfully. We honor our veterans for their sacrifice to our country and for their courage and integrity. May every citizen realize that our country is better and safer because of their valiant duty. We praise You for all veterans who have gone before us in eternal rest. We especially pray for those veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending our country. Bless their families and comfort them with the thankful prayers of a grateful nation. Almighty God, You gave us Your only Son, Jesus. Allow us to follow His example and work to create a more loving world. Let us not perpetrate war but safeguard peace and preserve Your gifts of equality and freedom. Through the efforts of our veterans, help us continue to promote justice in all nations. We thank You for our veterans, past and present, and for the knowledge that You are with us in all things. Amen.
