THE PHILLY BLOCK PROJECT You may recall that this group asked for your photos not too long ago for an exhibit to celebrate the neighborhood. Their aim is to form a relationship between the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center (PPAC) and its neighbors . As part of their program they are collaborating with South Kensington artists to offer a series of free art-making workshops to take place on the first Saturday of the month from 10 am to 1pm. The next workshop is scheduled for Saturday, June 4th It will take place on—the “ Grassy Lot” at the corner of N. Mascher Street & W. Colona Street. The workshop will be on: “Cement Planters and Block Decorations”. Under the guidance of Iris & Julio Rodriguez you will learn how to make a cement street planter that you can take home to your block. You can register as a team of people (i.e. residents of a specific house) or as an individual. The workshop is for ages 13 or older. PENTECOST SUNDAY This Sunday is Pentecost—the word means different things to many different people. What some might not realize is—that it is a very Biblical word. Pentecost was the 50th day after Passover. It was also an agricultural festival, the Feast of Weeks, when the wheat harvest was celebrated. For the Jews in the Old Testament neither Passover nor Pentecost was simply an agricultural festival. It would be 50 days after Passover until the Jews would come to Mount Sinai and Moses would receive the law; the 10 Commandments. Pentecost is about God giving to his redeemed people the way of life by which they must now carry out His purposes, His message and empowering them. How appropriate then for God to send the Holy Spirit to this young church to proclaim He was with them. After Christ’s Ascension into Heaven, the Apostles ,with Mary His Mother, were gathered in prayer, waiting for the fulfillment of Christ’s promise to send His Spirit to them. They did not know exactly what that would mean. On the day of Pentecost, just as promised, the sound of a violent wind filled the house and tongues of fire came to rest on each of them. All were filled with the Holy Spirit. They received the gifts of the Spirit which enabled them to carry out their mission to preach the Gospel to all nations. This was the beginning of the church as we know it and why Pentecost is sometimes referred to as the “birthday of the Church”. The celebration of Pentecost Sunday reminds us that we all have the same unifying Spirit that was poured out upon the first-century Church. The spiritual dynamic that was present at that first Pentecost, moving people to love God, to seek out holiness, and to come together as church, is still at work today. . “Lord Jesus, breathe on me and make me more alive to God. Come, Holy Spirit, and fill me with your life!” 214-3

Sunday Scripture Reflections Reading 1 Acts 2:1-11 Today we celebrate the day when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples of Jesus. They were "filled with the Holy Spirit" and never again would be content to keep their faith to themselves. Now they were all fired up by the Spirit to share the Good News with everyone. Down came the barriers of fear. Down came the language barrier! All the pilgrims gathered in Jerusalem from many nations could instantly understand the disciples. And they, too, were filled with the powerful Spirit of God..
Reading 2 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 or Romans 8:8-17 Paul's letter today gives us two "proofs" that show we are cooperating with the Holy Spirit. First, we as a community can truly say, "Jesus is Lord." Second, each of us uses his or her gifts for the good of the community. We pull together to help bring about the reign of God

Once again we are reliving Easter night with Jesus and the disciples. He breathes on them, communicating the gift of the Holy Spirit. They gladly receive Jesus' Spirit and his ministry of forgiving sins. At Pentecost the Spirit will send them forth as living signs that Jesus has overcome sin and death among all people.

Peace and forgiveness are gifts from Jesus in the Holy Spirit. Forgiveness is not "forgiving and forgetting." It does not deny that a wrong or a hurt took place. When we hurt someone, the bridge between us falls down. Our bond with that person is broken. When we forgive someone, or are forgiven, we allow the Holy Spirit to rebuild the bridge between us, even stronger than before. Because we are limited and human, we may not feel this all at once. But forgiveness is part of God's love. When we forgive, we bring God's love into our lives and into the lives of those who have hurt us. We can cross the bridge to meet again. We may still remember being hurt, but we can recall it with thanksgiving. We can thank God for the new and stronger bridge.
