ANDREW GARY ’20 Gary, an active member of St. Martin’s Safety and Security Committee, conceptualized a bill in the Louisiana Legislature that was signed by Gov. John Bel Edwards in June 2019. The bill – Senate Bill 43, now Act 44 – aims to enhance school safety protocol through student participation. Gary says that experience encouraged him to establish The Youth Advocacy team of Louisiana, a student-run nonprofit organization that advocates on legislation and policy to benefit the youth of Louisiana.

Founding the Youth Advocacy Team, a non-profit corporation, and expanding it across the state.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear St. Martin’s Families, While I was thinking about this issue of The Bell dedicated to our StM community, eight years of feeling at home at St. Martin’s passed through my mind.

When I first arrived at St. Martin’s, I began hearing that the greatest quality of the school was its sense of community. To be candid, I don’t know of a school which doesn’t claim to have a defining sense of community. This awareness left me curious to see how the St. Martin’s community would distinguish itself. Suffice it to say that it didn’t take long for me to see just how special our community is.

I quickly learned that: • St. Martin’s is a place where alumni, young and old, reminisce as fondly about their teachers, and the staff members, as about their lifelong friends.

• It's a school where the pre-kindergarten teachers host a celebration for the seniors (their former little ones) each year at graduation time.

• In the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools, everyday acts of kindness by students are recognized by the faculty and administration and commended publicly.

• People care for and look out for each other: From the parents, to the students, to the teachers, to the staff and administration. We know each other well, from the youngest to the oldest.

• It is a school where the folks working in the dining hall know the students passing through their stations so well that they notice when they are absent, and they celebrate their milestones with them.

• It is a place where in Chapel, the Butterfly Song (gestures included) is sung with the same zest and zeal by seniors and alums as it is by the children in the Lower School.

• St. Martin’s is a community where God is revered. Every student who passes through the school gains and grows spiritually.

• It is a school where the two-year-olds can be seen proudly reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, hand over heart, and marching exuberantly to their patriotic favorite, “It’s a Grand Old Flag!” And that patriotism continues all the way to the Upper School, where students lead their fellow students in reciting the pledge and the Lord’s Prayer.

• And it is a school where the youngest to the oldest join arms and proudly sing the Alma Mater, swaying together whether in Chapel, in assemblies, or on the sidelines of sporting events. Pride in St. Martin’s underscores these moments in a deep and meaningful way.

Writing about the sense of community at St. Martin’s evokes so many warm and wonderful feelings. The list goes on and on, and I am so pleased to be a member of such a strong community.

8 Likes An annual tradition in 8th grade Latin is the “legacy project,” a whole-class endeavor to design and create an educational “gift” to leave behind for future students to help them in their learning. In the past, these projects have included albums, board games, and original illustrated stories. This year’s project—which is perfect for this particularly energetic and fun-loving class —is to invent, draft rules for, and “road test” as many new team games as possible to bring Latin grammar and translation to the next level. The round-table discussion process began today, and, even after a mere 30 minutes, some epic ideas sprang forth. Can’t wait to see where this goes! #stmsaints 6 | The Bell

ADMISSION

In October, AP Biology students accepted a healthy choices design challenge from their teacher, Dr. Joe Vaccaro:

“How might we help the children of Bastion Community of Resilience to learn the science and the art of healthy smoothie making?”

Bastion is an intentional New Orleans community in which wounded, ill, or injured veterans live alongside retired military and civilian volunteers.

Students coordinated interviews, whipped up some quick prototypes, and reworked the recipes after tasting.

The final products were delicious, custom-designed, and joyfully consumed by community members. The school’s Mobile Idea Lab served as a test kitchen for the evening. The classroom-on-wheels also provides studentdesigned STeaM experiences to the children of Bastion several times each semester.

Art + Poetry Awards

St. Martin’s student population has grown by more than 100 students since the 2014-15 school year, compared to a 1% decline in private school enrollment nationally.

Two StM students earned awards in the Anti-Defamation League’s No Place for Hate® art and poetry contest. Sixth grader Emmy Rabalais earned an honorable mention poetry award and fourth grader Brooke Jongbloed earned an honorable mention art award.

The contest was open to children who attend school in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Students were encouraged to submit a work of art or a poem in response to the following prompt: “If you had a superpower, what would it be and how would you use it to help your community?”

St. Martin’s Performing Arts Department’s production of “God’s Favorite” kept audiences laughing at the fast-paced comedy in its three nights of performances, October 23-25 in the Solomon Theater. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTS 25 NEW MEMBERS The National Honor Society inducted 25 students as the newest members of the prestigious academic organization on Monday, Nov. 25, at its annual induction ceremony in the Dan and Frances White Chapel. The induction increased the school’s chapter membership to 55 total members.

Belle Johnson Scholarship In December 1997, as Doug Johnson ’60 and his family gathered to celebrate Christmas, he read a letter to his mother, longtime StM teacher Belle Johnson, which said, in part, “In honor and because of your efforts which enabled Glenn (Johnson Brady ’65) and me to attend St. Martin’s, I have created the Belle Johnson Scholars Foundation.”

Now, 22 years after that initial meaningful gift, the foundation has provided scholarship awards to nearly 100 students in grades eight through twelve in honor of Belle, who was a Middle School science teacher at St. Martin’s from 1955 to 1985. This year’s recipients are: Abigail Beck, Kylar Coleman, Jenna DeLatte, Garrett DeViney, Emory Farber, Katie LaForge, Lindsey LaForge, Rian McManus, Adriana Paz, Toi Robinson, Malorie Saucier, Alexis Steckler, Jacob Thomas, and Sydni Wiltz.

VARSITY SEASON RECORD OVERALL 16-16; 15-15; 1-1 HEAD COACH Ray Scioneaux HIGHLIGHTS The varsity team won the District Championship for the first time in seven years and earned a spot in the State Volleyball Playoff Tournament. The Saints defeated East Iberville in the bi-district round before losing in the regional round to Northlake Christian. Eight players were selected to the 16-member all-district team in postseason honors.

For the fifth consecutive year, the girls’ team brought home a trophy as runners-up in the State Championship. Isabella Bartholomew took third place overall. Bellen Davis took an 11th place overall finish, while Rian McManus and Katie Williams put up Top 20 performances with 13th place and 18th place finishes, respectively.

TOOLBOX Three-year-olds use real tools to build a bench for their play yard When three-year-olds in the George Cottage Oak class noticed there was no bench in the play yard for students to sit on, they expressed an interest in getting one.

into appropriate sizes. They also practiced holding unplugged power tools. With their teachers’ help, they even practiced screwing two pieces of wood together.

“The teachers had a bench, but it was really tall for us,” explained Sadie Luby ’34. “We wanted a bench of our own.”

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER The next step was painting and assembly.

When Collins noticed that she made a mistake with the assembly, she pointed it out to the students.

Rather than immediately purchasing a bench, teachers jumped on the opportunity to follow the students’ interest and embarked on a project to build one instead. The George Cottage’s Reggio Emilia-inspired program is based on the idea that children learn best when engaged in meaningful work that grows from their interests. For the teachers of these very eager three-year-olds, this project fit the bill perfectly.

“We started by talking with the children about what makes something comfortable to sit on, and how many children they wanted the bench to be able to seat,” said Jenny Collins, George Cottage Oaks teacher. “They sat on benches with backs and without, with armrests and without. Each time, we discussed options and took a vote.”

The group looked at photos of benches online to identify several potential style options.

They then debated how many children should fit on the bench and measured the necessary length to accommodate them.

Ultimately, students decided on the style and the height (short enough so their feet could touch the floor) of the bench.

MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE Students practiced measuring with a variety of tools, from rulers to measuring tapes to t-squares. The children also began practicing how to safely use small handsaws, hammers, and nails with the guidance of their teachers.

Then they used mallots to hammer golf tees into foam blocks. Once they mastered this skill, they hammered real nails into pre-drilled holes in scrap pieces of wood.

PROTOTYPES AND POWER TOOLS When they were ready to build, students visited The Gibbs Family Center for Innovation + Design to have the wood cut

“I think it is so important for them to see their teacher make a mistake and stay calm enough to work through a solution,” she said.

“We asked the class what they thought the solution should be. They wanted to back up a few steps and do it right. I was so impressed with that and the patience it took for them to decide to do the work over again.”

For several days, teachers and students worked together to finish sanding and painting the pieces. Once it was completed, each student sat on the bench for a commemorative photo in the classroom.

They also talked about where it should be installed in their play yard.

Several students had noticed memorial or honorary plaques on some of the benches on our campus, and asked about what that meant. After a discussion about items around campus that were given to remember or honor a special person, the children decided that they wanted to honor Mr. Nolan Dewey (longtime StM staff member), so they dedicated the bench to his memory.

“The pride on their faces after finishing the bench was such a joy to see,” said Collins.

“They truly loved working on this project, and it shows how engaged they were with the entire process. The skills they learned were invaluable.”

LIFETIME

A LOWER SCHOOL CLASS LAYS THE FOUNDATION FOR LIFELONG SUCCESS

T

he classroom is buzzing with activity as fourth graders move from place to place, excitedly writing on papers taped to each student’s back. Some giggle to themselves, while others remain focused on their task — writing thoughtful, specific compliments to their classmates.

It is a fourth grade Life Skills class and the activity is called “The Gift of Me.” Students practice giving and receiving compliments and affirmations. With unbridled glee, they read each others’ compliments and guess the authors.

The class is taught by Lower and Middle School Counselor Christina Heath, M.Ed., LPC-S, NCC. Heath says she often follows a specific curriculum, Second Step, a holistic program rooted in social-emotional learning.

In addition, Heath works from personal lessons and a curriculum that covers topics such as impulse control, emotional regulation, respecting boundaries, diversity, sportsmanship, fairness, leadership, safety, self-esteem, mindfulness, listening, manners, friendship, gratitude, responsibility, citizenship, prejudice, problem solving, conflict resolution, loyalty, honesty, trustworthiness, health, nutrition, and exercise.

“In Lower School Life Skills, we redundantly say that this is our nonjudgemental time to practice

our skills together in a safe space,” said Heath.

“We do much of this through partner and group activities.”

Growing research proves that empathy is a skill that translates to success in career and life, and is therefore essential to impart to students.

Empathy helps students determine their identity and contributes to their ability to cooperate with others. Empathy can also help extend thinking, allowing people to stretch and test new perspectives and ideas — a key process for successful innovation.

LOWER SCHOOL The Lower School Life Skills curriculum focuses on skills for learning (such as listening, following

Putting yourself in another’s shoes allows you to use their perspective as a common starting point toward influencing them to your point of view — a skill critical for leaders and managers.

MIDDLE SCHOOL In Middle School, the curriculum focuses on empathy once again by using an empirically-based social-emotional learning curriculum. In addition, students begin working in advisory groups every other week. Advisors work in groups and one-on-one with students on a variety of academic, social, and emotional topics.

“I am passionate about the importance of Life Skills at St. Martin’s, especially for our Lower School students,” said Heath. “Learning these skills helps students put into words the feelings and emotions that they sometimes don’t know how to express. It also gives them the skills to successfully work through difficult situations.

The result is that our students feel safe, supported, and ready for a lifetime of learning.”

One initiative Lower School students love is Caught Being Kind. Heath designed the program to promote and encourage integrity and empathy.

Faculty watch for students showing unprompted kindness and caring. In her Life Skills class, Heath reveals the students who were Caught Being Kind that week. She describes the kind action before naming the student behind it. Students enjoy listening, guessing the student, and praising each other’s actions.

Brown Bag Lunch

The Alumni Brown Bag Lunch is an StM tradition my family looks forward to, each and every year!

My three children anxiously await the arrival of the invitation in the fall.

The invitation, whether decorated with little ants on a red checkered tablecloth or a bright orange pumpkin carved with a giant M, marks a very special day for them.

It is a day when alumni students are set apart from the rest of their peers. It is an event that allows my children to celebrate our family’s unique history and relationship with the school.

My children have attended the lunch each year since they were students of the George Cottage. They have enjoyed eating chicken tenders, fresh fruit, salad, and of course, chocolate chip cookies.

It has always been intriguing to see what type of embarrassing memories the alumni director has found deep in the stash of yearbooks and school memorabilia. All three of my children have loved getting to see their mom’s hilarious hairdos or awkward Middle School glasses.

However, their favorite part of the afternoon has always been running off to play yard games with their friends who share in this unique experience. This year

This was my daughter’s 16th and final year at the event, because Malorie will be graduating next spring. It is difficult to imagine attending the Alumni Brown Bag Lunch without her. We have watched her grow up at this event, through each division and every grade. She will truly be missed next year.

We have been blessed to have all been together at a school that values alumni relationships, and holds events to show students of alumni how important they are to the school. My children thoroughly enjoy having a unique event to celebrate the fact that they are part of St. Martin’s legacy!

Fall Fellowship For more than 25 years, the StM community has gathered before the Homecoming football game for the Fall Fellowship Cookout. Young and old Saints come together to enjoy food and fun before heading down to Tony Porter Field for kickoff. Current students and their families, alumni, and faculty (both past and present) all enjoy visiting with friends and showing off their Saints pride.

Traditions From St. Martin’s Day to Senior Chapel to Community Day in pre-k, St. Martin’s traditions run deep. They help establish the school’s identity and signal what it values. Connectedness Students at St. Martin’s feel connected to their teachers. Faculty, staff, and coaches serve as mentors, role models, sounding boards, leaders, and inspirations. That deep connection extends to students as they develop lifelong friendships with each other. It is not uncommon to hear from alumni that they remain connected to each other, to the school, and to their former teachers for decades after graduation.

St. Martin’s community members care for and support each other. From faculty and staff to classmates and families, all are welcomed and included in the StM community. Students benefit from a strong, active group of professionals who support and guide students to be the best version of themselves. While its students, faculty and staff, and families come from all walks of life, St. Martin’s is a place where all belong and all are seen as individuals.

The school, parents, and the community all work together to promote the health, wellbeing, and learning of all students. Many parents stay actively involved through the Saints Community Organization, a forum that facilitates open communication, collaboration, and fellowship between families, administration, and educators of St. Martin’s. The SCO hosts numerous fundraising and fellowship events, including the spring gala, golf tournament, Fall Fellowship, Back to School Bash, Family Fest, and Donuts with Dads.

Safety Before students can succeed academically, they must feel safe. St. Martin’s uses a variety of measures to ensure students’ physical safety. Of course, safety extends beyond the physical well-being of students. At St. Martin’s, students also feel welcomed, supported, and respected as individuals.

“We've spent the last year really addressing the various aspects of providing a physically safe environment for our students and faculty.

But it's important to remember that we, as educators, are also constantly working to ensure that students and faculty feel socially and emotionally safe as well. Celebrating - not just recognizing - individuals' unique perspectives and places in the world is what makes this community as diverse and welcoming as it is.”

Spirituality Based in faith and steeped in the Episcopal tradition, St. Martin’s integrates spiritual formation into the overall educational experience. The Episcopal tradition also calls the StM community to offer love to all people through inclusivity. As a result, St. Martin’s supports the individual faith journey of every student. Students are taught Christian beliefs as well as those of other major world religions, particularly those represented within the student body.

A Lasting Impression

There are certain people you meet in your life who make a lasting impression. Mr. Nolan was one of those people.

Whether it was serving our food in the cafeteria, setting up special events on and off campus, or delivering supplies to various divisions, you could always count on Mr. Nolan to stop, say hello, and ask how you were doing. He remembered personal anecdotes about each person’s life, whether regarding a parent, child, or alumnus, and took great interest in hearing how families were doing.

In the dining hall, faculty, students, and staff all knew that if we were in Mr. Nolan’s line, we were definitely getting our money's worth in food. He took great pride in preparing flavorful meals and making sure we had large enough portions to enjoy every last bite. He was delighted when parents came to him and asked, “Mr. Nolan, how do you make your tater tots?

It’s all my son talks about at dinner.”

When I thought about this, I realized this was how he showed his love for us, by giving us sustenance to power us through the remainder of our day. Mr. Nolan took great pride in feeding us and this pride was a reflection of how much he cared for us. Nothing made him happier than when a student came back for seconds of his mashed potatoes.

Although Mr. Nolan did not attend St. Martin’s, I truly feel he was the heart and soul of our community for 24 years.

It has been said that a measure of a man’s success in life is not how much money he has made, but how many lives he has touched. If that’s the case, Mr. Nolan had a wildly successful life, touching thousands upon thousands of students, parents, and staff during his time at St. Martin’s. He will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Just as in the words of St. Martin’s alma mater, “Her teachings will be there to guide us,” Margie Conatser’s legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of the lives she touched.

Her service to St. Martin’s began in 1959, teaching second grade and third grades. She later served as Head of Lower School for more than two decades. Margie’s strong stewardship and guidance left an indelible mark on her faculty, students, and families. Margie encouraged and inspired our community through her commitment to high educational standards, innovation, developing curiosity, creativity, and higher order thinking. Under her leadership, St. Martin’s Lower School received the National C.A.P.E. Award, recognizing its excellence as a Blue Ribbon school.

For Margie, students were the first priority. Treating children with respect, celebrating their unique qualities, and developing the whole child were hallmarks of her leadership. Margie believed in the power of using different teaching styles to match students’ learning styles. She encouraged, inspired, challenged, and supported her faculty to develop a culture of lifelong learning so they would be better teachers for their students.

Because of Margie’s love of literacy, she immersed the St. Martin’s community in reading. Under her leadership, Lower School students experienced opportunities to meet award-winning children’s authors and illustrators. Through multidisciplinary enrichments, students became strong readers and creative writers.

Margie developed a strong, caring culture. The faculty was vested in St. Martin’s because Margie was vested in them. She created an extended, supportive family that continues today.

Living her life with grace and steadfast determination, Margie was true to her convictions and will be remembered as a dynamic leader, wise mentor, and beloved friend.

A life well lived needs no further embellishment.

St. Martin’s Welcomes New Members to the Board of Visitors St. Martin’s Board of Visitors is a select group invited by the Board of Trustees to take part in an advisory role to help carry on the longstanding tradition of excellence in education at St. Martin’s. This group is composed of alums, parents of alums, and former administrators, many of whom have ties to StM that span decades.

This fall, St. Martin’s was delighted to welcome new members to the Board of Visitors during a two-day gathering that began with a cocktail reception hosted by Liz Martin Armstrong ’78 and Jennifer ’76 and Bruce Parkerson ’75. The following day, members attended a meeting in The Gibbs Family Center for Innovation + Design where they enjoyed a presentation from Head of School Merry Sorrells, who shared important school updates and news about projects underway at St. Martin’s.

Members concluded their morning with a tour of the Upper School as well as some of the newer areas on campus.

St. Martin’s is grateful for the outstanding loyalty, dedication, and friendship provided by its Board of Visitors, and appreciates its integral role in strengthening the school.

KELLY MCGEEHAN ’92 AND THE 1983 VOLLEYBALL TEAM

ARE THE NEWEST INDUCTEES INTO THE ST. MARTIN’S ALUMNI ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME Homecoming at StM is a celebration. As Kelly McGeehan ’92 pointed out in her Hall of Fame acceptance speech, “It’s a time for generations of Saints to come together in celebration of what this school once was, what it is now, and what it has the potential to be.”

It is for that very reason that, during Homecoming Week, St. Martin’s inducts the newest members of the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame in a ceremony attended by “generations of Saints.”

For 2019, the inductees were Kelly McGeeehan ’92 and the 1983 State Champion Volleyball team.

McGeehan was a multi-sport athlete at St. Martin’s who participated and excelled in volleyball, soccer, and track and field. During the induction ceremony, she was introduced by her father, former coach and Hall of Fame member Charles ‘Chick’ McGeehan.

Kelly McGeehan received many accolades over the years, including being named to the 1989, 1991, and 1992 All-District Soccer and 1989 and 1992 All-Metro Soccer Teams. She was also named to the 1991 and 1992 All-District Track and Field Team. In 1992, she was named District MVP in field events.

McGeehan was also a member of the 1992 State Champion Track and Field team. At one time, she held the StM records for shot and discus. She was the leading scorer during the 1989 and 1991 soccer season. During her senior year, she served as team captain for all three sports and was voted St. Martin’s Most Athletic Girl.

If Homecoming is a time to celebrate as Saints, the members of the 1983 volleyball team were champs yet again. The group of women that came together for this induction celebrated each other and their enduring friendships with energetic cheerfulness as though they had just won the State Championship the day before.

The 1983 Saints volleyball team capped a great season with the Division III State Championship. With a 30-6 record for the year, the team dominated multiple tournaments throughout the season, routinely beating schools from larger divisions. The team finished the season undefeated in eight straight district matches. Several members also earned postseason honors: Tracey Moore was named District MVP. Peyton Pettit and Jeanne Herrington were named 1st Team All-District. Shannon Goodrow, Andra Rodriguez, and Mary K. Williams were named 2nd Team All-District.

Members of the team were: Alexis Brown, Margaret Christy, Shannon Goodrow, Jeanne Herrington, Cindy Hild, Janet Jenkins, Leah Miciotto, Anne Mitchell, Tracey Moore, Peyton Pettit, Andra Rodriguez, Shannon Ryan, Marsha Smith, and Mary K. Williams. The team was coached by Linda Trevino and Kerry Vogt. The group was introduced by its coach, Linda Trevino.

Each year St. Martin’s inducts new members into its Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame, which was established in 2006. The Hall of Fame recognizes individuals and teams who distinguished themselves in interscholastic athletics as players, coaches, athletic trainers, or administrators while at St. Martin’s.

Starting in January 2020, Joey Walther Caruso will facilitate a docuseries, Retain Your Brain, for the People Program, a communitybased nonprofit that offers a wide variety of classes. It will meet every week on Lakeshore Blvd. near UNO. Those interested in joining her class can call Joey for more information at (504) 812-3300.

1957 This fall Mary Helen Seago’s artwork was featured in a show titled Vive la Difference!: Selected Works of Mary Helen Seago and Pierce Jonassen, in the Christwood Atrium Gallery in Covington. The other artist featured was Pierce Jonassen, the wife of Hans Jonassen ’58 and mother of Hans ’83. The curator of the gallery is Ann Menge Loomis ’64. There were dozens of StM friends in attendance at the opening reception in September.

The Class of ’57 has begun plans for its Annual Richard J. Lietz lunch and dinner on March 14-15, 2020. Hardee Kilgore and Bitsy Laudeman Duggins will present the Satchel Award this year.

Conrad Wall will report on fishing in the Northeast. Mary Helen Seago will show slides of her famous art. Dr. David Conner will give golf, skiing, tennis, and medical advice. Sandra Stinson Allen and Ann Williams Cornay are going to wear cowgirl boots and explain what it is like to be proud Texans.

1960 Hackett Cummins and his wife Nan are still dividing their time between North Carolina and Pass Christian, Mississippi.

Patti McHugh Fullilove had a grandson who was married at the end of October in New Orleans, and as both he and the bride are chefs, Patti reported on spectacular food!

Mac Jernigan and his wife Susan were in South Africa in June, when the Young Women’s Chorus of San Francisco, which Susan leads, did a fantastic tour there.

Nancy Kinser wrote from her summer home in Maine that she enjoyed Doc Linvingston’s book, and reported that “Mr. Aker would be proud of his writing ability.” Many in the class have enjoyed Robert Livingston’s candid view on his years in Washington in his book The Windmill Chaser, which came out last fall.

Patti Donnelly Leathers visited Charlotte Hooper Rosshandler in Montreal this summer and was so glad to get to see her there.

Several classmates wrote to Rev. John Jenkins in celebration of his 95th birthday in July. The classmate who summed it up so well was Susan Breit Carroll, who is quoted at the right. Fr. Jenkins did have a great birthday with his family and was delighted that his granddaughter was off to Germany for a year on a fine arts scholarship, having just graduated from college at Duke.

Classmates wrote loving memories of Martha Nelson Frost ’62, who was married to B. Murray Frost from our class, and were happy to know that Fr. Jenkins was in touch with Martha before she lost her battle with cancer in May. He had her laughing about incidents at StM 50 years ago.

Octavia Art Gallery, 700 Magazine Street in New Orleans, is showing 22 pieces of William Monaghan’s newest work (November 2 through December 31). The exhibition is titled Environmental Studies, and the gallery’s website salutes Bill for using “industrial forms and fabrication methods to create paintings that distort perceptions of depth and space, explore the role of objects in the authorship of art, and challenge our relationships with the unwanted and unnoticed remnants of consumer culture.”

Bob Merrick was named an Activist of the Year by St. Charles Avenue Magazine.

Anita Zervigon-Hakes recently spent two weeks in Paris visiting two grandchildren who are going to school in Paris to learn French.

In the Fall 2019 issue of Fleur de Lis: The Journal for the Society of Louisiana Irises, the group published a lovely story “A Window Into Our Iris Past: The Extraordinary Nelson and Hutson Families of New Orleans.” The piece focused significantly on Martha Nelson Frost, who passed away in May, and her connection to the Society.

In July, John Jenkins celebrated his

1964 Michale Steiner is excited to announce the birth of his granddaughter. Perry Bel Ide was born to Peter Steiner and Ashleigh Ide on August 21, 2019. Peter and Ashleigh live in Brooklyn, New York. Peter is the head of industrial design at Code and Theory in New York, San Francisco, and London. Ashleigh is a professional photographer, currently completing a Master of Social Work degree at Fordham University.

1968 Ed King and his wife Nancy took a trip down nostalgia lane recently, back to the early 70’s. In July, they attended the Rolling Stones concert in New Orleans with several friends. In September they took a road trip to Atlanta to see The Who’s current Moving On tour. The music for both shows was absolutely fantastic, and the aging crowd was electrified.

1969

Pepper Hatch and his wife Barbara are both retired, living in Nashville. They are blessed with three married children (two in Nashville, one in Portland, Maine), and four grandchildren (two boys and two girls). They stay active with grandchildren, travel, and golf and exercise.

Patricia Paddison is still working part-time as a psychiatrist and living in Seattle.

Tyler Posey and his wife Susan have been married for 26 years and live in McLean, Virginia. He is a lawyer at USAID. Their son, Jack, is a senior at Northwestern and daughter, Grace, enters Tulane Medical School in August.

Marsha Pryor lives in the Dallas area with her husband, Mike, who is from the Ozarks in northwest Arkansas. They were married in Eureka Springs in 2000. The couple has recently started a fun bluegrass band of eight musicians. Marsha plays guitar and churango and sings harmony. She also enjoys playing guitar and singing (mostly gospel and 40s and 50s tunes) in retirement homes and homeless shelters.

Beckie McKown Barry, PhD, RDH retired from the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Dentistry in December 2018 after 38.5 years. She thanks StM for providing a great educational foundation. She loves retirement and spending time with family and her grandson.

1975

Anne Sheppard Breitschwerdt lives in downtown Raleigh and loves it. She can walk to Cameron Village, which is full of restaurants, grocery stores, drug stores, and many small shops. She plays a lot of tennis, loves to garden, and enjoys time with her two grandsons, ages 3 and 5. She also travels to the beach and the mountains frequently.

Margo Pelias Coffey is teaching pre-kindergarten part-time in Nashville, and enjoying three precious grandchildren.

After teaching art history at Swarthmore College outside Philadelphia for 39 years, Michael Cothren retired in 2017 with his wife Susan to a dream house on the edge of the wilderness in Sedona, Arizona.

Cameron Duncan is an architect with Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. In his free time he enjoys fly fishing and archery/bow hunting.

Hank Gamble is moving on to the semi-retirement years from being an oil and gas landman and attorney. His main residence is in Houston, Texas, with wife Shannon. Travel is a must for them, with a house in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, a farm in Stuttgart, Arkansas, a fishing camp in Hackberry, Louisiana, and an apartment in New Orleans. They enjoy snow skiing, golfing, fishing, and hunting and attend many sporting events, including being a Saints season ticket holder for 54 years.

Ben Treen is a practicing dermatologist and Mohs surgeon in Ocala, Florida. He is excited to celebrate the class’ 50-year reunion soon.

Dr. James “Jimmy” Robinson was recently the subject of an article by Sports Illustrated. The piece, "They Call Him Dr. Jimmy, and for 30-Plus Years He’s Helped Take Care of Crimson Tide Athletes," profiled Robinson’s decades-long career as the head team physician for The University of Alabama. He is a professor of Family Medicine and endowed chair of Sports Medicine for the College of Community Health Sciences at UA. He also served as a team physician for the United States Olympic Team during the 2000 event in Sydney, Australia.

1977 Patti McFarland Martin reports that she is still working as a realtor for Keller Williams Coastal and Lakes & Mountains Realty in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She just celebrated her 23rd year in real estate. She is living in and loving Kittery, Maine for now.

Additionally, as of this past January, she counts herself a breast cancer survivor. Her most important title, however, is grandmother (Nanna) of Brooks William Martin, born on February 6, 2019 to her son, Jake Martin, and daughter-in-law, Lisa Staf Wadin Martin of Atlanta, Georgia. Her daughter, Tara, is an interior architect with Cube 3 Architects in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

While many of her classmates from 1977 are retiring, Mary Beth Pendley Ray is just launching an encore career as an executive coach. She is very excited to build on the best of a legal career and non-profit leadership. Her daughter Betsy and her husband moved to London, and her son Alex is in New Orleans, two great places to visit. She is looking forward to the 45-year reunion!

Lisa Newman Sibal is retired from her career(s) as an attorney and professional fundraiser, though she enjoys working (very) part-time for her church. She and her husband John split their time between NOLA and Fairhope, Alabama. They enjoy traveling, golfing, watching the pelicans and sunsets on Mobile Bay, and spending time with their grandchildren (two in New Orleans and three in Baltimore).

1979 After several years of serving as Marketing Manager for Abingdon Press, Trice Gibbons has joined The Christian Century magazine as Assistant Editor for Audience Development. He will maintain his residence in Nashville, while “commuting” to The Christian Century’s offices in Chicago.

1982 Christopher Huber and his wife, Lillian, have bought a SpeedPro printing franchise and moved back to Atlanta. They decided since the kids have left the nest they would shake it up a bit.

Scott Shackelford was pleased this spring when his daughter, Charlotte Clare Shackelford, a 2016 honors graduate of Mandeville High School, was elected Associated Student Body Vice-President at Ole Miss and was also named to Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society. Charlotte is a senior majoring in political science with minors in investigational studies, security analysis, and Spanish, and is a member of Phi Mu Sorority.

1986 Alissa Miller Kantrow has been working locally in the film and TV industry in New Orleans for the past twenty-plus years. Currently she’s line producing an Adrian Lyne film, Deep Water, after producing two seasons of the Blumhouse TV series, The Purge for USA. She produced an Academy Award-winning animated short film, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, and garnered an Emmy nod for her work on the remake of the mini-series Roots. She is married to Ted Kantrow and they have two children, Zach, 17, and Lily, 14.

1988 Louisiana State Rep. Kirk Talbot was elected to the Louisiana Senate for District 10 after beating his opponent with 55% of the vote.

District 10 includes Kenner, Harahan, Elmwood, River Ridge, and a section of western Metairie. He has served as the representative for the 78th House District since 2007.

1992 Claiborne Schmidt created a new shirt company, DatMamboShirt, that designs, manufactures, and sells premium men’s casual shirts, embroidered with popular symbols of New Orleans. DatMamboShirt is inspired by the Latin American guayabera and woven with a blend of linen and cotton, making it ideal for warm weather. He was recently featured in an article on bizNewOrleans.com. Erin Durbin Craig is excited to begin her first year teaching at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School in Peoria, Illinois. She is teaching general music to K-6 and is choral director for the youth choir. She has been an active soloist with St. Thomas Church since 2001 and last year became the director of the adult choir. She is thrilled to be teaching at the school that her son, Jeffrey, attends.

Sarah Jones Carter is still living in Okinawa, Japan and has recently become a certified professional personal and executive coach. She launched her own business, New You Coaching, LLC, and blog. She has been a contributing author for some local military community publications and her speaking career is also taking off. In October she spoke on the topic of “Values and Teamwork” at the Okinawa Leadership Seminar. When she and her husband need a break from their packed schedules, they enjoy traveling. This year has taken them to the Maldives, Rome, and most recently, New Zealand for a snowboarding vacation in Queenstown. They are always open for suggestions on where to head to next.

1994 Barbara Farris and Mignon Frey Sweeney, members of StM’s Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame, were recently inducted into the Tulane University Athletic Hall of Fame as members of the Green Wave’s 1996-97 women’s basketball squad that finished the year with a school-record 27 wins and collected the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory.

1997 Steven Sherman is heavily involved with Media Finance Management and sits in on the Radio, TV, and Newspaper Committees. He is still active with LSU Tiger Athletic Foundation and sits on the Priority Points Committee.

2003 Gibbs Construction vice president Lauren Gibbs has assumed ownership of the company, taking the reins from her father, founder Larry Gibbs. The company reports that “This is an exciting time for our 43-year-old family business, and we look forward to Lauren’s leadership as CEO, continuing to propel Gibbs Construction into the future.” After graduating from StM, she graduated from Vanderbilt in 2007 with a B.S. in Engineering, and in 2008 again from Vanderbilt with a Master of Engineering/ Construction Management and then from UNO in 2014 with a Master of Business Administration.

2005 In December 2018, Anna Coons earned her Master of Science in Nursing degree to become an acute care pediatric nurse practitioner.

Charles Gariepy started Columbia Business School in 2018 and Julie Henson has recently relocated from Washington, D.C. to Houston, Texas to pursue her MBA at Rice University.

This spring, Gretchen Hoffman accepted a position with Moak, Casey & Associates, a public school finance and accountability consulting firm in Austin, where she focuses on financial and economic development analyses of public-private partnerships.

2006 Victoria Welch Short and her husband Tom welcomed their daughter, Eleanor Grace Short, on October 3, 2019.

2009 On October 12, 2019 Taylor Michals was married to Reagan Montgomery at Stella Plantation with many StM family and friends there to celebrate. Also in October, Taylor passed the bar in Texas.

2010 Madeline Brannon and Joel Derby ’09 are engaged! The couple reconnected at a Saints game viewing party. Joel proposed during a trip to the Catskills and a wedding is scheduled for May 2020. They live in New York City.

2011 Katherine Honeywell and Benjamin Amoss were married on January 19, 2019, at Christ Church Cathedral, in a ceremony officiated by Fr. Jeff Millican. Katherine’s bridesmaids included Samantha Oppenheim, Chloe George, and Christina Noya.

Benjamin’s groomsmen included Daniel Amoss ’14, Jefferson Honeywell ’14, and Nicholas DiMaggio ’09. Katherine is the daughter of Anne Dunlap Honeywell ’83. Several St. Martin’s alumni attended the wedding, including friends from the classes of ’82, ’83, ’88, ’09, ’10, ’11, ’12, ’14, and ’16. See a photo on page 40.

2015 Nicolas Phillips just made Staff Sergeant. He is still stationed at Hill Air Force Base in Utah, but currently is working in Germany. In May, he married Kelly Hamilton.

Jessica Wise, who received her Ph.D. in Classics from the University of North Carolina, is starting a new position this year as a Professor in the Department of Classical Studies at Wellesley College. While at Wellesley, she is excited for the opportunity to fuse her interests in Women’s and Gender Studies with Classics, offering courses on Gender, Sexuality, and Social Politics in the Ancient World. Jessica is very impressed with Wellesley thus far and would love to connect with any women at St. Martin’s who might be interested in the college.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

One School, One Community In a literal sense, the term “St. Martin’s community” refers to school administrators, teachers, and staff members; the students who attend the school, and their families; and alumni, friends, and organizations who have a stake in our school’s success — to name just a few. But at St. Martin’s, “community” means so much more.

Ana Mesa Ortega ’85 has been a member of the Board of Trustees since August 2013.

Her term as Chair began in August 2017.

I hear it so often from current parents, faculty and staff, and fellow alumni: St. Martin’s is not just a school. We’re a family.

Every individual’s experience of St. Martin’s is unique and special. I cherish the many friendships made over the years and feel passionately that we achieve great things together as one school and one community. If you ask my daughter what she loves most about StM, she happily says, “Mom, at our school everyone is welcome and accepted!”

Our school community includes the most supportive, caring people I’ve ever had the pleasure to be around. I believe our culture of connection and support is why our students graduate well-prepared for college and life.

THEN + NOW

THEN St. Martin’s Episcopal School first celebrated St. Martin’s Day in the 1950s, and the tradition has evolved throughout the years. The annual celebration honors the school’s patron saint and namesake. Throughout the decades the day has included dedications, skits, chapel services, games, and even a National Honor Society Induction. As pictured on St. Martin’s Day in 1977, Upper School students played games before an all-school picnic. By 1995, the tradition of games had evolved to organized competitions between grades.

NOW Today, StM Day is one of the most beloved days on the school calendar. Woven throughout the fun-filled day are the three tenets of the school’s mission: Faith, Scholarship, and Service. The opening chapel service represents faith. The discovery hunt, which encourages students to work together and learn more about their school and community, emphasizes scholarship. In honor of St. Martin, who was known for his kindness, the student body spends the weeks leading up to St. Martin’s Day raising money for a selected charity. Through this, they practice service. Students still participate in games and end the day with an all-school picnic.
