In order to help its students form well-rounded personalities, St. Martin's combines a knowledge of our cultural heritage with the enjoyment of day-to-day experiences. Recognizing these two aspects, the Shield staff endeavors to present both the serious and the light-hearted sides of life in the theme of this yearbook. The statues, representing our cultural heritage, present a contrast to the cartoon figures, which depict the humor and fun of school life. It is hoped that when you leave St. Martin's, you will always remember the advantages of such a well-rounded curriculum; and we hope that the 1963 Shield will help you cherish these memories.
On behalf of the entire student body, the faculty, and the administration, the SHIELD staff of 1963 proudly dedicates this book to a person whose tireless energy, genuine kindness, and unselfish lo ve has contributed immeasurably to all phases of St. Martin's life. In grateful appreciation we present our 1963 edition to "Daddy B"

It is not enough to tell students that our democratic republic enjoys the best form of government man has ever developed. To be sure, it is imperative that they learn well its historical growth along w.ith the principles and ideals which motivated our forefathers to establish that great foundation of our political system - - The Constitution. Unless our children, however, have the opportunity to participate in the democratic processes, it will not be very meaningful and will more than likely be taken for granted. Where do our youth have a better opportunity to learn the lessons of democracy than at school? Here they learn from experience that freedom stems from selfdiscipline and the willingness to assume responsibility. In their daily tasks they learn that the individual is rewarded in terms, commensurate with his performance, be it the grade on an examination, a part in a play, or a place on the team. Insistence upon fair play, good sportsmanship and the necessity to live by the rules are experiences no student can escape in his daily round of school activities. Then, too, the opportunity for students to serve, to gi ve of themselves for the general welfare, is ever present. The production of this Annual is an excellent example of such an opportunity. But abo ve all, our students have the opportunity to learn and live the
Christian faith which has inspired our form of government from the very beginning. To the staff of
The SHIELD and their sponsor, who have captured so eloquently this protrayal of democracy in action throughout this book, I extend a sincere "thank you" on behalf of your teachers and fellow students alike.

True worship is the love of God, the love of Truth, Goodness, and the Beautiful; it deals with God unseen, yet who, once experienced, can never be forgotten. In our worship God leads us into the future, yet makes sense of our lives where we are. He calls us to the service of our fellow men, yet sends us into quiet a nd solitude to contemplate our separate soul. The depths of worship are simple and pure, yet to understand our God and to live as He wills calls for all of our heart and mind, all of our strength, and all of our soul.
Our Chapel Worship is to quicken our consciences by the holiness of God, to feed our minds with the truth of God, to purge our imaginations by the beauty of God, to open up our hearts to the love of God, and to devote our wills to the purpose of God.

This year, seven Senior s , all of whom hav e b een chosen for their scholastic a verages and for their personal desire to l ea rn, have been working to su ppl eme nt their regular Engli sh course with specia l pr eparation for advanced placement in college En glis h.
After intensive study of short storie s, essays, no ve ls, dramas, and po ems - - - thi s approach demanding extra effort the se students took an exam ination May 13. Successful grades on this C E. E. B administered Advanc ed Placement Examination will qualify them for credits earned in Freshman English at the colleges of their choice; and they will then be exempt from Freshman English requirements, and will have gained additional experience in this academic disicipline
This program is having great success in preparatory schools all over the country, and the keen interest and response shown by t hese Seniors indicate both the desirability and the need of such a program at St. Martin's. Certainly, their efforts are to be comm en d e d ; perhaps they have led th e way to eve n greater accomplishments by our graduates.

An epidemic of injuries contributed to the poor record of three wins and five losses. However, there were three or four fine efforts by the team as a unit - and several splendid efforts by individuals. Our best wishes to the graduating seniors To the returning members of the squad we say, "Be prepared to work, work, work!"
To our 1962 football squad :
This year's squad put forth one of the finest team efforts that I have ever witnessed in downing a previously undefeated St. Paul's eleven, 25-19. Though injuries riddled the team following this game, their fine spirit and determination never ceased. May your future endeavors reflect this same attitude.
Newman's Greenies came from be hind 1wi ce to edge St. Martin's Saints, 14-13, in a thrilling Rivnside Lea g ue battle Friday on the Metairie playground field . Truls Leikvang, a Norweg ia n se ni or playing his first year of football , proved the hero of the nip-and-tuck con test w i t h a crashing block of lhe Sai nts ' second co n version attempt.
Se ni or aerial artist Jimmy Vaught guided the Saints' offe nse ga ll opi n g 55 yards for a first quarter touchdow n and hitting jun ior John Eastma n with a bull et -toss that blossomed into a 45-yard second sta nza touchdown. Eastman converted the first frame point- after; bu t Leikvang blocked the second qua rter boot, whic h later prove d to be the margin of victory.
Sandwiched b e t w e e n the Saints' two TDs was a second quarter Greenie tally that knotted the score 7-all. Wit h the e ntire Newman first team backfield out due to inj ur ies, junior quarterback Don Ensenat tossed 'to Harry Harder on a 63-yard scoring pass play ear ly in the second period. Bob Reisfeld tal·lied t he point-after, but the ,Saints, opening thei r football season, came back to take a 137 halft i me lead.
A fire up Newman team took t he second half kickoff an d marched 62 yards in eight plays with R eisfeld smas hin g three years for the tying touchdown. All-state cage star Bobby Lane grabbed an E n senat toss for the go-ahead point-after-touchdown.

Is she, or i sn't she? With only one regular r eturni ng from la st yea r 's outstanding squ ad, Jr. John Eastman, the Saints began th e season with practically no experience , very little height, and nine und erclassmen. Only three seniors we r e on the squad of twelve boys.
Our "won-lost" record isn't one to write home about and we are not proud of it. This year can be called a rebuilding year. However, at times we did play good basketball and were in some close and exciting games.
We do appreciate the support of the fans and the cheerleaders in this "not-so-good" year
As most losing teams say - "Wait until next year!!"

We faced the season with a team that, for the most part, had little experience John Hirsch and Jeff Graf were the only returning lettermen. The first half of the season, we lost more games than we won. Through continued practice and experience gained by playing the first part of the season, coupled with the desire to function as a whole team, we produced far better results the last half of our schedule. The team record was seven won and seven lost. Although this is not impressive, the team was improving throughout the season and getting good experience for next year. This was a very receptive group of young men, and I know they will always do their best as St. Martin's representatives.
EIGHTH GRADE
BACK ROW: Ricky Gregory, Brad Kelly, Bill Bryson, Bruce Johnston, Bill Bohne, David Snyder. SECOND ROW: Mike Mosely, Kenny McAshan, Steven Kimble, Richard Foster , Billy Brockman, SEATED: David Paddison, Rusty Tarver, Doug Matthews , Jimmy Wilkinson, Mike Hesse. Managers: Carl Johnson, Chuck McMurry.
This year's 7th grade basketball team, sometimes called the "Keystone Cops, " completed one of the toughest schedule s ever played by a junior high team. Their over-all record was not impressive: 1 win and 6 losses. What was impressive, however, was their determination to meet every challenge with all they could give it, and the re spect they won from all for not quitting or feeling sorry for themselves.
SEVENTH GRADE
BACK ROW: Jeffrey Jones, Donald Marshall, Eddie Ordemann.
SECOND ROW: Tommy Jahncke, Bob Capps, Joe Redden, John Blalock, Calvin Fleming. SEATED: Robert Rainold, Chuck Stedman, Rufus Harris, Scott Oliver, Mike Mc Hugh, Stephen Grilletta. Managers: Carl Johnson, Chuck McMurry .
The 8th grade record for the year was 5 wins and 4 losses. This was truly one of the most aggressive groups of 8th graders ever. They, too, had an exacting schedule , but at times demanded and received the respect of all the teams they played. In the not too distant future, all of us at St. Martin's will regard this group of boys as one of the "Scrappiest" and most closely knit collections that ever represented our school in the field of athletics.
The courage of the 7th grade boys and the loyalty and uplift that kept the 8th grade boys together were most rewarding and certainly inspiring to all.
ANTHONY PARISI, CoachThe Jr. High girls are to be commended for their effort, participation, and spirit this season. The volleyball team, although off to a slow start, finished the season with an excellent record. They won the Private School Volleyball Tournament for the first time in St. Martin's School's history The basketball team played only one tournament, and in this they finished in third place. Each and every girl played to the best of her ability and displayed excellent sportmanship at all times. They indeed have a bright future in St. Martin's sports.
Interscholastic competition records continue to improve with a 1962-63 championship in swimming and the loss of the basketball championship by only one point. In the first tennis match of the year St. Martin's tied for second - again only one point behind. The girls have shown good spirit in all sports with a tremendous effort displayed during the basketball games against Port Sulphur and Woodlawn. I am very proud to be associated with those girls who show by their spirit that they are concerned for St. Martin's, for their team, and for themselves to the extent that they are willing to become deeply involved in these activities.

Getting out this yearbook is no picnic. If we print jokes, people say we're silly; If we don't, people say we are serious.
If we clip from other books, We are too lazy to write it ourselves; If we don't, we are stuck on our own stuff.
If we stick to the job all day, We ought to be out hunting pictures; If we do get out and hustle, We ought to be putting first things first.
If we don't print contributions, We don't appreciate true genious; If we do, the book is filled with junk.
If we make a change in a fellow's write-up, We are too critic al;
If we don't, we are asleep. Now, like as not someone will say We swiped this from some other book -We did!
