ELLSWORTH 0, VAN SLATE Headmaster HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE On each section page of this volume is a little vehicle well known to St, Martin's students as "your little red wagon," For many years our high school science students have been confronted with this bit of symbolism uttered by one of their favorite science teachers; his way of saying, "this is your responsibility."

Responsibility is a word often heard in high school, so much so that its real merit is likely to be blighted in the minds of those for whom it is intended, It is a particularly important term that has several levels of significance in our lives. Each of us is likely to think of responsibility at first only in terms of his individual welfare, Homework is done, book reports are made, school routines are followed, and much effort is put forth in studying for examinations, all because these things increase the stature of the individual, Another aspect of responsibility not so easily assumed by most, is doing for others, This facet of the term is motivated by a real concern for the welfare and success of one's friends and associates. Being .an active participant in school a ff airs. showing. loyalty to those whom we hold near and dear, being a team player, a dependable committee member, or just being considerate of the welfare of the group in the classroom are common illustrations of responsibility on this level, Then, there is the type of responsibility most difficult to assume because it does not result in immediate benefit to the individual or his associates. This type comes from a sense of duty to the community and society of which one is a part and is not motivated by personal gain. Students who commit themselves in this manner, unfortunately too few, are eager to make the most of their own potential in order that they in turn may make their greatest contribution. These are the students who go beyond the call of duty in order to know, to understand, to serve, From these will come the dedicated teachers, preachers, doctors, statesmen, and builders whose primary aim is to be of service.

The editorial staff, in choosing, whether by chance or design, the symbol of the little red wagon, has indeed made a most timely selection, Has there ever been a time when the assumption of responsibility in all of its aspects was more important than now? And speaking of responsibility, the students and faculty sponsor who labored so diligently to create this fine publication merit a most sincere "thank you" from all of us, E. o. VanSlate

St, Martin's scored a 20-0 victory over its traditional rival, Newman. The Saints had the first game jitters, but were still able to win an exciting game impressively, The running attack was too much for the Newman Greenies to supress.

The Saints' powerful offensive was too much for the St, Bernard Eagles, Led by Eddie Ellzey, who scored all six touchdowns, the whole St, Martin's team worked to trounce the Eagles 40-6, ST. MARTIN'S 25 - COUNTRY DAY 6

ST. MARTIN'S O - BURAS 6 St, Martin's was upset by a good Buras ball club by a 6-0 margin, Many costly fumbles hurt the Saints' scoring chances. The Wildcats scored their touchdown on a pass and were able to bottle up the Saints' running attack for the rest of the game.

The Saints' line looked good the second half and one not to be denied, The running and passing were again marks of a strong offensive team.

Finishing strongly, St, Martin's scored a 24-13 victory over a very heavy Chalmette team. The Saints were held back the first half, but roared to victory in the last two quarters with a good display of its team ability,

St, Martin's was defeated by a well-coached team. Playing a very good first half, the Saints enjoyed a slim 20-19 lead, but in the second half, several bad breaks hindered the team and aided the Destrehan Wildcats in scoring two more touchdowns. The final score of the Saints' last game was 31-20; it was a close game,

ST, MARTIN'S 20 - PORT SULPHUR 13 The Saints defeated the Broncos 20-13 after a poor first half. Behind 6-0 at the beginning of the second half. the Saints, with a mixture of running and passing, managed to overcome a hard team in an important victory.

During the football season, Junior Varsity games, usually held on Saturday mornings, brought out many upper school students. The junior cheerleaders and spectators helped to add to the spirit of the games. The St. Martin's J, V. played only three other teams this year, but, playing each team twice, they came out with a very exciting season. Because of the Saints' unusually strong defense, a result of good team effort, only the Country Day Daisies were able to score against the powerful St, Martin's line. There were many outstanding players who should be able to contribute a great deal to the 1959 Varsity team.

The 1959 Varsity Basketball team ended the season with a record of five victories and six losses.

In addition to the games scheduled by the Riverside League, the Saints competed in four pre-season games and two tournaments. St. Martin's defeated Bellechase, lost to Port Sulphur, and beat Behrman in the consolation, placing third in the Riverside Pre-Christmas Tournament. In the Norco tournament, the Saints beat Hahnville but were knocked out by Destrehan in the second round. In spite of being hindered by some injuries, the group showed real team spirit and sportsmanship throughout the season.

The Junior Varsity Schedule this year included four pre-season games and ten Riverside League Games.

In the pre-season games, the J. V. played and lost two times to Fortier, 32-23; 40-30. They redeemed this by twice defeating Nicholls, 2'1-16; 39-32. The first two league games did not encourage the boys, for their efforts did not bring them victory. These games, however, made them play all the harder and they didn't lose another game the whole season! The J. V. averaged 36 points a game while their opponents averaged just 23. The girls' "B" team had one of its worst seasons in a long time, as they won only one game, and lost five. The "A" team, on the other hand, celebrated St. Martin's Day by winning its first game in almost five years. They finished the season with a 2-4 record.

The people who made up St. Martin's Girls ' Varsity Basketball Team played six games this season , winning four. Because there are only a few schools in the girls' league, St. Martin's usually plays its opponents more than once. In this way, the team is really able to improve its technique against rivals. The game scores prove how well the Saints did .

Elections for 1958-59 representatives and officers were held in May of the preceding school year. The third student council in the history of St. Martin's, it was perhaps the most successful thus far. THIE SHIELD 1959, St. Martin's sixth Shield. Few students realize the work which the staff puts into the yearbook. The three deadlines (in December, January, and March) are usually met by working overtime. The 1959 Shield reverted to the old method of Spring delivery when the attempt for fall delivery in 1958 proved to be unpopular.

At St. Martin's everyone reads THE HALO, the school's official newspaper publication. In it, stµdents find articles about their most recent activities, especially sports, and information about important coming events. There is an editorial and a message from the headmaster, for the purpose of encouraging students to apply themselves to their work, and to think more seriously about the future. On the lighter side, however, is a variety of poems, gossip, and compositions which are written humorously. Articles concerning projects in the lower school are placed in a special section of the paper, "Little Big Shots."

These news-reports are actually written by students in the elementary grades.

The work which goes into THE HALO is handled by those in the hi_gh school who are on the Halo Staff, and their faculty advisor. These people should be highly congratulated for the entertainment and enjoyment with which they provide the rest of the school. Homerooms are quieter on the eight mornings THE HALO is delivered than any other time during the year.

These scholarship tests provide a wonderful opportunity for all high school graudates who have maintained high enough averages. Those whose records are sufficient may take the first tests, in Math and English. From the resu lts of these examinations, semifinalists are chosen, and then finalists. The tests may prove beneficial even if one does not enter the finals, since a person's placement is in comparison to students all over the United States, and universities will possibly consider and be greatly impressed by those with high ratings.

For the second year in a row, St. Martin's seniors visited Washington, D.C., delighted to find it blanketed in snow and ice. They spent four days in the capitol city, and in that time they toured many of our government's important buildings. They saw the monuments which are memorials to some of the great men of our nation. Last, but probably not the least, they enjoyed the winter weather and the ice skating and snowball fights.

Although some students had been to Washington before, they found it a completely new and different experience to go there with their classmates.

St. Martin's is a very fortunate school when it comes to taking field trips, because there are usually school buses available to take students on such excursions. Because classes in the lower school have the same teacher for all their subjects, they can really take advantage of the opportunity to take field trips. Every year some go to the airport, fire-stations, dairies, bakeries, wharfs, the St. Louis Cathedral and other historic sites. Certainly the students at St. Martin's have been able to gain experiences and to learn about things which add greatly to their classroom work.

In the fall of each year, the Mothers' Club presents a book display for parents, teachers, and students to browse through. They have gathered together a wide selection from which books in almost every field of literature may be ordered. The proceeds are donated to the St. Martin's library to purchase books for our own school library.

Boys' and Girls' State are conventions which are held every summer for ten days in Baton Rouge, Louisiana's state capital. The purpose of these con• ventions is to acquaint young citizens with the organization of city and state government. There are delegates from high schools all over the state, so that representation from each school is limited, and it is an honor to be chosen.

This year , St. Martin's was represented by Chip Favrot and Jeannette Boykin.

STYLE SHOW

The overflowing gym, the girls modeling the wonderful new winter fashions, the boys in their new football uniforms--all helped to make this year's style show one of the best. It is presented annually by D. H. Holmes for the St. Martin's Mothers' Club with our students participating. The purpose is to increase the scholarship fund for deserving students.
