by St. Martin's this year is evident. We hope this yearbook justly presents this same growth and progress and has, itself, grown in the process.

"The Shield" tries to capture in a few pictures and in fewer words the high lights ofeach school year so that you may better recall your years at St. Martin's. The old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words has been our guiding slogan.

The coherent presentation of a review of an entire school year in one book is a tremendous challenge. Our attempt to do this has been a difficult but most enjoyable task.

The 1955 "Shield" Staff sincerely hopes that this book in some measure fulfills these aims and your expectations.

SENIOR CLASS HISTORY This year's Senior Class started at Saint Martin's in the Eighth Grade. During its five years of school life, the Class has participated in practically all of the school's activities.

Many of its individuals have distinguished themselves as outstanding leaders and workers.

Working as a unit, the Class produced the first BOX SUPPER Dance when Freshmen, a great VALENTINE Dance during their Sophomore year, the "Best Yet" JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM, and this year a tremendously successful HOMECOMING Dance, When this yearbook is distributed, the Senior Class will have returned from their trip to Washington. The first Senior trip to be taken by a graduating class from this school.

By these few examples, it can be seen that a class, working together, can make outstanding progress during its high school life. Saint Martin's will truly miss THE CLASS OF '55, and wishes them luck and Godspeed in the years to come.

An under dog St. Martin's team, contrary to the predictions of the experts, threw away their first game jitters to squeak past a strong Sacred Heart Eleven by the margin of a safety.

The Saints suffered their worst defeat at the hands of the powerful Slidell Eleven. A lone tally in the fourth quarter prevented a complete whitewash.

Playing great ball with determination and spirit, the Saints held the highly touted Newman "Greenies" to a narrow six point win in a thrilling game.

Although still ruffled from the Slidell game, the Saints jumped off to an early lead and went on to defeat Arabi 26-0.

An 80-yard punt return for a Holy Name tally broke the ice after a thrilling and scoreless first half. Another T. D. put Holy Name ahead 14-0 at the end of the third period, The Saints had a lone score in the last quarter. By losing this game, The Saints conceded their chance for first place in "Metro."

St, Martin's 20--Country Day 14 In a great game, spiced with plenty of action, the Saints moved past Country Day 20-14. At the end of the first half, the Saints led 6-0. The last half was close, but consistent play put the Saints on the long end of the score by a touchdown at the end of the game,

St, Martin's 28--Ridgewood O Finishing the season in fine style, the Saints had little trouble in putting down the Ridgewood Eagles 28-0 . This left the Saints tied for second place in the League, with a final record of three wins against one loss. al

Each year an outstanding educator or religious leader is invited to New Orleans by the Parents' Clubs of St. Martin's. This person is invited to counsel with the teaching staff and to address an open meeting for parents and friends of the school.

This year the Dad's Club, assisted by the Mother's Club, was responsible for a visit to our school and to our city by "Red Barber, " the well-known spons commentator, who is also an active lay reader in the Episcopal Church.

Mr. Bather's deep religious convictions and his demostrated love for his fellowman were most inspiring. We hope that a little of his "dust" was brushed off on each of us in passing.
