‘Be the Change You Want to See In the World’ A

s Christians we have a tendency to get the concept of “Change the World” all twisted.

On the one hand, we overestimate our importance. We think everything is up to us. So we attack the job with unsustainable force. Next thing we know, we are a casualty of our own effort, burned out and bitter. On the other hand, we recognize the scope of the “Change the World” project and it starts to look way beyond our pay grade. We let the job intimidate us, tuck our tail between our legs, and wander away, defeated before we ever get started.

In the end, at these extremes, we have considerably less impact, than with a more centered approach.

See, we really are here for a reason. Furthermore, we can make a difference. Folks at St. Luke’s prove that every day. The advice we embrace is more akin to the famous quote from Mahamta Gandhi, who said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” At St. Luke’s, changing the world begins with a desire for a deep relationship with the One who created and sustains the world. From that center, it can grow and grow... and grow.

Think about some of the projects in which we invest our time and talent. Tutoring children at Fox Hill Elementary School helps them understand not just math, but their own intrinsic value. When St. Luke’s shows up to help a child get through a tough homework assignment, the child learns much more than a skill. The child learns that she or he is loved unconditionally. Her world is changed.

Who knows what potential has just been unleashed by an hour of our undivided attention to that child?

What about those Habitat houses we just built, which not only give two families a solid roof over their heads, but also help upgrade the whole neighborhood – which admittedly could use the upgrade!

What about that Rummage Sale or Food Drive or Pumpkin Sale or Trunk-or-Treat party? What about those profound acts of hospitality by parking lot and indoor ushers, greeters, teachers, preachers... all the folks who share their precious time on this planet trying to make it a little bit better place?

I want to be part of that kind of self-aware community of faith: a community that understands we are here for a purpose that is greater than our personal satisfaction.

I want to be part of a community that understands that God takes our offerings of time, talent and treasure, and multiplies them in ways that really do make a difference. I want to be part of a community that takes the responsibility to Change the World, seriously – and with great joy! Let’s BE that community!

Sermon Series Change The World This sermon series challenges St. Luke’s to live up to God’s call on the community to make a difference in the world.

Oct. 5 – “How God Changes the World” – Ever notice how God uses the least-expectedmeans to change the world? Moses, the murderer led the Hebrew children to their true calling. Rahab, the foreigner and “harlot” sided with the Israelites in the overthrow of her own land. A baby in a manger flipped the world on its head. What can God do with us?

Oct. 12 – “I’d Like to Change the World: But I’m Not Adequate” – We’ll confront the big immobilizer to being a change agent: feeling inadequate or ill-equipped.

Oct. 19 – “I’d Like to Change the World: But I’d Rather Keep it for Myself” – What can we do to overcome the notion that our generosity might mean we’d miss out?

Oct. 26 – “I’d Like to Change the World: But Just Not THAT Part” – We want to help, but just not THOSE people or groups... Especially those who have hurt us or mistreated us.

Nov. 9 – “You ARE Changing the World” – We’ll explore how this generous community really is making a difference.

Later @St. Luke’s 6PM in Robertson Chapel with Dr. Marion Miller – Experience a multi-faceted worship that draws on cultural expressions of spirituals, Gospel, hymns and jazz music; featuring Later Band and Vocals, and a thought-provoking message. Communion is served every Sunday and is available to all persons. Light refreshments before and after worship.

The Garden 8:15, 9:15 & 10:15AM Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre with Dr. Linda McCoy – The Garden is a satellite ministry of St. Luke’s providing non-traditional worship in a comfortable, casual setting. Music is provided by The Good Earth Band. The worship experience is hosted off campus at 9301 Michigan Rd., Indianapolis. It is designed to reach out to seekers who might not otherwise engage with an established Christian community.

Taizé 5-5:45PM Third Sunday of each month, by the baptismal font in the Sanctuary, with musical community and Rev. Kim King – This service of peace and candlelight offers a contemplative style of worship. Silence, scriptures, prayer and music combine to engage worshipers in a spiritual experience.

St. Luke’s Chancel Choir

Our Chancel Choir is collaborating with singers from Anderson University and the Carmel Symphony Orchestra for a performance of the Dan Forrest “Requiem for the Living” on Saturday, November 8 at 8 pm at the Palladium in Carmel with Maestro David Bowden conducting. Tickets for this concert, which will also include Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, are available through the Palladium box office.

Christmas Concert Guest Singers

Experience the thrill of holiday musical performance with our music ministry ensembles!

The Chancel Choir welcomes singers not available to sing an entire season to join them in a their renown Christmas Concerts as Guest Singers.

Individuals with choral experience join in Thursday night rehearsals starting on Thursday, October 23

Handbell Choirs Have Openings

St. Luke’s Orchestra

The monthly contribution of the St. Luke’s Orchestra to worship is without compare! And now is the time to join their ranks. Whether a seasoned player, or perhaps a little rusty, the orchestra is welcoming new members for the upcoming season of ministry. STRING PLAYERS are particularly needed! Along with supporting worship at St. Luke’s, the orchestra has special opportunities planned, including a concert to support St. Luke’s Outreach ministries. Founding Pastor Plans October 2015 Retirement

Still Growing. Still Dreaming.

The Garden has set a progressive course in theology, service design and execution, location, outreach, use of social media, and special events to address challenges faced as a congregation and a society. Now going on 20 years old, The Garden is looking at the next chapter. What do the next 20 years hold for The Garden?

It’s 1994. Linda McCoy is in an airplane, on her way to Denver, Colo. She has just read a story about a man who asked his boss what he should do for the day. His boss said, “Go out and do something great.” The man invents Nintendo Gaming Systems.

Linda’s message and the supporting elements can be hard-hitting, yet laughter is frequent and celebration obvious. The Garden’s pastor points out regularly that God is in everything – including The Garden.

Where is God Leading us Now?

Linda enjoys the story then dozes off. When she awakens, she startles her traveling companion by saying, “I just received a message from God!” Back in Indianapolis she delivers the message to then-St. Luke’s Senior Pastor Kent Millard, who doesn’t hesitate.

“If this is a God-thing, I want to be on God’s side.”

Within months, Linda’s dream is planted and begins to take root. The Garden starts to grow.

“Dream Big,” which has been a recurring theme for The Garden, since its founder’s flight to Denver, is even more critical to this congregation now. In the next few years, The Garden will choose new leadership as Rev. Linda McCoy retires – effective Oct. 1, 2015.

The news comes with some grief to the gathering, but as Linda told the congregation when she made the announcement in late September, “Without change, we don’t grow and mature.”

Here We Stand Fast-forward 20 years. The Garden is thriving, with an average of about 400 participants engaged each week in three Sunday morning worship services.

Gathering at Beef & Boards Dinner Theater with a “come-as-you-are” dress code and even children comfortable in the worship setting, the congregation lives out an intention to offer a nontraditional experience to folks who have otherwise felt estranged by what Linda calls, “traditional faith rhetoric.”

One action-packed service may include video clips from “Modern Family,” “Stripes,” or Disney Classics.

The five-piece, Good Earth Band transitions, from Classic Rock, to Country, to Alternative, to Blues, to Indie Rock and back again with ease. The Garden seeks to break down barriers between the sacred and the secular in a non-threatening, inclusive environment.

She’s encouraging Gardeners to keep asking, “What will we dream into being in the next 20 years?

Where is God leading us now?”

A survey of the 800-plus participants of the Garden revealed that the characteristic of The Garden they value most is, “Helping people develop their spiritual life.”

No doubt, The Garden will continue to explore innovative ways to explore faith. That quality is part of the DNA of The Garden, according to its founding pastor, who says, “I think I can guarantee you that the heart of The Garden will not change.”

In celebration of 20 years of ministry, the church will mark 2015 as “The Year of The Garden.”

We’re telling four of David’s stories this month.

If there was ever a life that proves God can show up in BIG ways, it’s David’s life. God helped David and those that surrounded him do some really BIG things. Hey, that’s why the theme is Big Things!

We’ll start the month hearing how God helped Samuel do a very big thing and pick who was going to be the new king. I love how this story shows us that God is always looking at and knows our hearts and that the inside is the most important part of us. Then, we will hear how God helped David defeat both a lion and a bear. Always a favorite among the preschool set, this story allows for lots of fun role-playing for the kids.

Week three, preschoolers will hear the story of David and Goliath. This is such a fun one to tell as preschoolers get so excited about the idea of a little guy defeating a big guy. God really can help us do very big things. We’ll end the month sharing how God was with David throughout his military career. God helped David do big things all through his life. God can help us do anything.

Elementary at 9:15 & 10:45

Sometimes, just when things are going smoothly, we find ourselves bickering, arguing and complaining about little things that mess with our attitudes about life. God wants to work in our lives to tweak some of the things in our character, and to conform us to the image of His son. See, that’s what the Holy Spirit does in our life. I don’t know about you, but I sometimes feel like God is reminding me to evaluate my life. That’s why it’s important to listen to what He says in his instruction manual, the Bible, about certain attitudes.

Take gratitude as an example. God says that if we don’t give attention to the attitude of gratitude, we can become frustrated, get tied up in our own egos, damage friendships and not enjoy what is before us. This month’s memory verse is Thessalonians 5:18 - Give thanks no matter what happens. We all have so much to be thankful for, especially God’s son, Jesus! This month we’ll study the Ten Commandments and the stories of Samuel and David. We’ll hear what God instructs us to do when we examine our own hearts and choose an attitude of gratitude!

Emerging Adults, pictured at left with members and friends of Vida Nueva, kick off an ongoing effort to connect through service with St. Luke’s Servant Day in August. Watch for more opportunities!

Connect Through Serving Others Join other Young Adults as we create a rhythm of service in our lives. As a group, we recognize that serving together regularly changes us from the inside out.

Through our partnership with Vida Nueva (2801 West Washington Street), we have the chance to regularly invest in relationship with a church that serves immigrant families on the west side of Indianapolis.

Our projects will vary each month, and we will end the evening with an optional late dinner at a local restaurant! Contact Mindie Moore for more information on how you can participate!

St. Luke’s United Methodist Men sponsor a fish fry each Fall to raise funds for a rural community in western Haiti called Fondwa. Many St. Luke’s members and friends purchase a ticket and eat a fish or chicken dinner, an act that in itself benefits a whole community and many families for years to come. But last year, we realized we could do so much more. So, this year, to multiply our impact, we aligned ourselves with The Carmelle Voltaire Women’s Clinic Project. This project will provide local access to medical care for women, and training for midwives who assist in home births. To make this clinic happen, we are moving beyond passing the dinner plate, to inviting “Angel Investors” to assist in leveraging each contribution with matching funds. Whether you just buy a ticket and enjoy dinner with us, or you decide you’d like to be one of our Angels, you can help close the gap to make The Carmelle Voltaire Women’s Clinic Project a reality.

Fifteen years ago this month, then-senior pastor Dr. Kent Millard launched a new worship service called Later @ St. Luke’s.

Designed to attract people whose scheduled prohibited church attendance on Sunday mornings, the new service was to reach out to an increasingly diverse neighborhood with the Good News of Jesus Christ. After 15 years, the experiment continues, with decided passion at 6PM on Sundays in Robertson Chapel.

While Dr. Millard started the service, he turned the reins over to Rev. Carolyn Scanlan, associate pastor, who continued to lead the service until her call to a new ministry after about eight years. About three months later, Dr. Marion Miller prepared the worshiping community for a new chapter.

“We thank God for her amazing and incredible leadership in helping the service to evolve into a new kind of service,” Dr. Millard said.

Dr. Miller’s passion to outreach, her inclusiveness of all kinds of people – no matter what their race, age, station in life might be – has helped St. Luke’s to achieve its vision and mission.

St. Luke’s calls itself, “an open community of Christians.” Later @ St. Luke’s has lived that vision, and become an entry point for a number of new faces to the larger St. Luke’s community.

Later @ St. Luke’s worship gatherings are dynamic, innovative and open to everyone. Incorporating into each experience a variety of art forms, prayer, and powerful messages, these worship services also feature music ranging from contemporary Christian to Gospel and Jazz. Spanish language is frequently employed as well, to widen the reach of the worshiping community to second- and third-generation Hispanic neighbors.

Meanwhile, the faith community has served a role in leadership development that even Dr. Millard might not have envisioned originally.

At present, the congregation has hosted a dozen student pastors, through a relationship with Christian Theological Seminary.

Program Finds Jobs for Homeless Youth

In 2013, Outreach, Inc. launched an employment initiative that helped 77 youth obtain employment, while helping others learn how to pursue work.

Several of the youth accessed stable housing through a federal program. Plus, 22 youth either graduated from high school or earned their GED, while 76 accessed mental health services.

Outreach, Inc. served more than 330 homeless youth with 10,000+ hours of face-­to-­face contact, plus time offered by St. Luke’s and other volunteers.

St. Luke’s to Launch Food Pantry for 71st/Michigan After more than a year of research, a small team from the Outreach Ministry proposes launching a food pantry in the 71st & Michigan neighborhood, perhaps as soon as early 2015.

In reporting the plans to the Outreach Ministry Team, the group provided a number of realities that have converged to point toward this outcome.

• One in five residents of Indianapolis are Food Insecure. That is, they don’t know how they will get their next meal, or when they will eat again • There is an especially high concentration of this need in Pike Township in the area around 71st & Michigan • St. Luke’s relationships with residents in a few neighborhoods and apartment complexes, as well as schools in the target area confirm the need established by the statistical data The task is not one St. Luke’s will attempt alone. “We are very close to partnering with

Dow AgroSciences, Gleaners Food Bank, & Eskinazi Health Network,” said Nate Montgomery, who has been leading the effort. With their support, St. Luke’s hopes to open the food pantry at Eskenazi Pecar Health Clinic at 6900 N Michigan Road.

“This is a multi-use facility that has housed the Eskenazi Pecar Health Clinic for the past 12 years. Over that time other organizations have moved in that can serve the population of the area and the Health Clinic, including WIC, B.A.B.E. and a few others,” Montgomery added. “After meeting with the leaders from these organizations recently, we are seeking proper permissions to use part of the facility for our food pantry.”

Discover Joy, Make a Difference in the Life of a Student When Tom Lange drives to Fox Hill Elementary School, he has faces and names to go with the startling statistics of the students in this school system. It makes his role as a St. Luke’s tutor/ mentor all the more rewarding.

Fox Hill serves 825 students grades K-­5th grade, about 80 percent of whom qualify for free and/ or reduced lunch. The majority of the student population lives in the apartment complexes along

73rd street between Michigan and Harcourt.

School statistics show that fewer than 20 percent of the 5th Graders started their education at Fox Hill, demonstrating the transient nature of the population. All of these factors combine to make learning tough for these kids. That’s where Tom’s life and the life of these kids intersect in a hopeful way.

“We appreciate and are open to all types of volunteering/mentoring efforts and would deeply appreciate any extra support you could provide,” said Principal Sean Taylor. “Our volunteers are an integral part of the our commitment to the success of all learners.

We aim to ensure our volunteers are part of our family.”

Ashley Shapiro learned to paint at her grandmother‘s side and has moved in and out of this form of artistic expression over the years. This exhibit focuses on Ashley’s deep spiritual interest in angels. See her work in the “Identity” Gallery.

Dana Lynn was educated at Heron School of Art and works in a variety of media. The work in this exhibit was inspired by the birth of her son and is a compilation of the little souls of children and pets.

Help through the hard places This anonymous mom shares the impact of St. Luke’s Stephen Ministry on her life in a particularly tough time.

I have been divorced for many years. My mother was my main support. When she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer three years ago, I did not think that I could bear it. She died just three months after her diagnosis. The day after her funeral, my 17-year-old son was arrested on a DUI charge. I wanted to bury my head and never look up!

I reached out to the church for support. The receptionist connected me with Mary Katherine Schnitz. She assigned a Stephen Minister, who met with me every week. My Stephen Minister listened. We both cried. We prayed. She was wonderful. Stephen Ministers don’t set out to solve problems. They stand with us while we talk through our problems and work toward solving them. It was so good for me to talk it all out.

My goal is to be a Stephen Minister someday too. I know that I can help someone else through a tough time. Life gets hard for everyone sometime along the road. At other times, we can be the care giver. The best part for me is that I really “feel God again.”

St. Luke’s Stephen Ministers are trained, caring Christian friends who walk with you during your time of difficulty. Men are matched with men and women with women for confidential one-on-one weekly meetings. How you can help 1. Drop contributions of candy at the Main Office 2. Be one of 40 stops on our Trunk-or-Treat parking lot!
