Ebola.

R

emember hearing in October that the first New York City Ebola patient was admitted to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan? That news struck close to home for me. My son-in-law is a doctor at Bellevue – with an office next door to the quarantine unit.

I’ve seen how Americans have arguably over-reacted to word that the virus is alive on this continent.

Afterall, Kim Kardashian has had more husbands than there are Ebola patients, one Facebook post pointed out. Meanwhile thousands have died in other countries. Of course, it’s precisely because so many have died that some folks are panicked here – at least now that the virus has traversed the ocean.

With fewer than six degrees of separation between Ebola and my daughter’s family – which includes my first grandchild – I have to admit that Ebola now has my undivided attention. So where was my reaction – my undivided attention – when this disease was threatening the lives of people in distant lands? Were those families any more expendable than mine?

I learned about Ebola a decade ago, when my daughter (now a nurse and the mother of my first grandchild) came home with a reading assignment.

The Hot Zone was a terrifyingly true account by Richard Preston of an outbreak of Ebola in a primate facility in Virginia. That particular strain proved harmless to humans. Yet the book demonstrates the kind of horrible effects of this disease – effects that have been present in humans since at least 1976; just not humans here.

When they admitted the sick doctor to Bellevue, I wondered: Why, if we have known about the ravages of this disease since 1976 do we have no licensed vaccine ready to fight an outbreak? Then I remembered how long it took the world to respond HIV/AIDS – a disease that was ravaging a population that some considered expendable, only to learn that HIV/AIDS is no respector of sexual orientation. Turns out Ebola isn’t going to limit itself to West Africa, either. But as the Bellevue patient could tell you, helping in the Hot Zone can threaten your life.

What would Jesus do? We know, don’t we? Lepers, tax collectors, women of ill-repute... he waded into the Hot Zone to bring healing and hope. Courageous?

Seemingly. On the other hand, it’s also profoundly practical.

What I am learning from this frightening turn of events is that when we are not sufficiently motivated to care for “the least of these” the wind has a way of changing. A time comes when we recognize the connection between our compassion for all others and our self-interest.

The Garden 8:15, 9:15 & 10:15AM Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre with Dr. Linda McCoy – The Garden is a satellite ministry of St. Luke’s providing non-traditional worship in a comfortable, casual setting. Music is provided by The Good Earth Band. The worship experience is hosted off campus at 9301 Michigan Rd., Indianapolis. It is designed to reach out to seekers who might not otherwise engage with an established Christian community.

Taizé 5-5:45PM Third Sunday of each month, by the baptismal font in the Sanctuary, with musical community and Rev. Kim King – This service of peace and candlelight offers a contemplative style of worship. Silence, scriptures, prayer and music combine to engage worshipers in a spiritual experience.

St. Luke’s Chancel Choir

Our Chancel Choir is collaborating with singers from Anderson University and the Carmel Symphony Orchestra for a performance of the Dan Forrest “Requiem for the Living” on Saturday, November 8 at 8 pm at the Palladium in Carmel with Maestro David Bowden conducting. Tickets for this concert, which will also include Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, are available through the Palladium box office.

Handbell Choirs Have Openings

Children SUNDAY MORNING OPTIONS:

Thank You, God, for everything. That’s what our preschoolers are learning this month. They’re learning that God made it all. From the water in their tub to the apple that they eat, God made it. God made the dog that barks outside. God made the parent that tucks them in at night.

Most importantly, God made them. God made everything, and for that we give God thanks!

We’ve tackled Creation just a bit differently this year with our adding of the “Thank You” theme, and we’re excited to see how your preschoolers embrace it. We are sharing all that God created, but we’re not doing it day by day. (Just a hint, the day by day is coming next year.) We’re approaching creation topic by topic. We start with water in week one, and then move to land and plants in week two. Week three has us talking about all aspects of the sky while week four will be animals, the personal favorite of preschoolers everywhere.

We end the month talking about God’s most amazing creation, people.

When we hear the word creativity we respond in a handful of ways. Many of us get excited. We can draw or paint, sing or dance. We LOVE the arts.

Others of us break out into a cold sweat thinking about that one art class we had to take in high school. Still others of us simply ignore it. We think we’re not creative. Never have been; never will be.

When you look at your kids, I’ll bet at least a few of them feel the same way. For whatever reason, they’ve come to think about creativity in terms of arts and crafts, music and dance. But there’s

something about creativity that we all need to remembe: We’re not creative because of our talents. We’re creative because that’s how God made us. God designed each of us with a mind to think beyond ourselves and imagine the possibility for, well anything. It’s God’s image in us that gives us the capacity to see beyond the ordinary and to understand a dimension of life that a dog, or a tree, or a whale cannot experience.

Our imagination—our creativity—is a reflection of being made in God’s image. That’s why we’re taking the month of November to look at CREATIVITY: using your imagination to do something unique.

It’s so important for leaders and parents to tap into a child’s imagination –to fuel their creative side.

We want every child to grow up with faith in what God can do – in what God wants to do – through them. Adults have an opportunity to spark the creativity of each child; to say over and over again to every child: “You have amazing potential to create because you were created in the image of an amazing Creator.”

Really, creativity is simply imagination plus action.

When your imagination leads you to do something good, to make a unique mark, to find a unique answer or solution, you are being creative.

Our memory verse this month is Ephesians 2:10: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” God wants to do something unique with our lives. We are created in God’s image, and because of our Creator’s work in us through Jesus, we have an amazing capacity to use our creativity to do more good things.

“ I was watching him from across the room. His eyebrows shot up real quick,” Pastor Jamalyn recalled. “He shut the envelope and put it away.”

At first, she was not sure what caused him to look so puzzled, so she kept an eye on him in case something was confusing.

“Pretty soon, he did it again, like something was wrong with the check,” she said. Then it occured to her that he might think St. Luke’s Angel Tree program had made a mistake. “My hunch was he thought we put too many zeroes or something.”

Walking across the room, she asked, “Sir, does your gift certificate say $100 on it?”

He nodded. She smiled warmly.

“That’s what it’s supposed to say.”

As the man began to cry and explain to his family, standing nearby, none of them could quite believe it.

“For me,” Jamalyn said, “It was just a reminder that a lot of us spend $100 at the grocery store without even flinching – especially during the holidays.

But for this family, it was like they hit the lottery.”

The St. Luke’s community will make the holidays better for 70 Washington Township families this year – as well as 80 homeless youth.

In partnership with Outreach, Inc., a downtown Indianapolis organization that offers support to homeless teens, St. Luke’s will purchase gifts for the youth. Meanwhile, Washington Township families will be identified through Jordan YMCA, which supports families with before- and after-school care.

Pre-registered families will be invited to gather in St. Luke’s Great Hall where they can “shop” at the St. Luke’s Christmas store for their families. This process allows parents to pick out items for their children and wrap the gifts as if they were shopping at the mall.

“I don’t know. I just thought that was a holy moment with that family last year. I think St. Luke’s is going to be creating a lot more similar moments this year,” Jamalyn said.

Participants pay about $250 for a weekend adventure in another city, designed to demonstrate what God is doing beyond the Metro Indianapolis area. See/Serve/ Surrender invites participants to see each of the target cities in a new light; to serve with existing ministries in those locations not only to help their ministry, but also to gain new insight into mission practices applicable for St. Luke’s; and to surrender time, talent and treasure. Journey to the Celtic Lands

Join Dr. Linda McCoy and others from The Garden and St. Luke’s on a journey to the Celtic lands of Ireland and Scotland. Travelers may choose one or both portions of the trip.

Ireland is scheduled from June 6-13, and will visit the ancient tombs of Knowth and Newgrange, the areas around Galway including the Cliffs of Moher and The Burren, and continue on to the beautiful Dingle Peninsula to visit the Gallarus Oratory and other ancient Celtic sites.

It concludes with a stop in Glendalough, a 1,000-year-old monastery located in the scenic hills of the Wicklow Mountains, and ends back in Dublin.

The Scottish segment will journey on to Millefont Abbey on the way to Beflast, Northern Ireland, and then travel by ferry to Scotland. The first stop will be a cruise on Loch Lomond, and then on to the mystical isle of Iona. After leaving Iona, the tour continues to Edinburgh before crossing back into Northern Ireland and ending in Dublin. The Scotland portion will begin on June 13, and travelers will be able to travel home from Dublin on June 21.

Holiday Brunch Featuring Women’s Author

Jill Savage

Jill Savage is an author, founder and CEO of Hearts at Home. She and her family live in an old farm house on the outskirts of Normal, Ill. She says this really means that she lives “close to normal life” and that she “lives life on the edge of normal.” She and her husband, Mark, have five children, two sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, and a “herd” of farm cats.

Jill believes that we should all give up on trying to be “perfect.” She came to this conclusion after consistently living an imperfect life.
