DAVID’S FINAL YEARS
Today’s sermon looks at David’s affair with Bathsheba and subsequent killing of Uriah, David’s lowest moment, but also one that reveals, perhaps, his most redeeming quality. Following this episode, the prophecy of Nathan the prophet proved to be true, that “the sword will never depart your house.” (2 Sam.12:10) As we saw in the lives of David’s sons and attempted coup led by Absalom, David suffered humiliation and danger, but he became a changed man.
In one episode, while being pelted with stones by a man named Shimei, David’s bodyguard wanted to kill him, but David stopped him saying, “It may be that the Lord will look upon my misery and restore to me his covenant blessing instead of his curse today.”(2 Sam. 16:12) David became a much more humble man, and eventually he returned to lead Israel with strength and honor.
When Joab confronted him to stop mourning over Absalom and lead the people, David responded. When he wanted to take a census of the people, reflecting his temptation to trust in numbers rather than God’s leading, David accepted God’s correction. In other words, David showed his willingness to be rebuked, and this may be the reason the Bible says David was a man after God’s own heart. (1 Sam.13:14)
David’s final days, however, were still filled with intrigue. When David was old and near death, his son Adonijah assumed the throne and announced he was king, but when news of this reached David, as his last act as king, he announced his son Solomon, whose mother was Bathsheba, would be the next king. And so, the story continued with God’s promise that one day a descendant of David would be the Messiah. Gospel writers made clear that Jesus’ lineage could be traced back to David, and following the life of Jesus, his followers today continue that story of living as people who seek to be after God’s own heart.
