Benediction

David and the Ark

Following the death of King Saul who was killed in battle against the Philistines along with his son, David’s close ally, Jonathan, David became king in Judah. The is the tribe of his ancestral city, Bethlehem. This is what makes the birth of Jesus in this village significant, since the future Messiah was promised to be a descendant of David.

During his time as King of Judah, King Saul’s son, Ish-bosheth, tried to hold onto power as the king of the northern tribes of Israel, but gradually his reign weakened, and David’s strengthened. After Ish-boseth died roughly seven years after David became king of Judah, David was anointed king of all Israel, thus reuniting the nation.

David then conquered the city of Jebus built in the hill country around the Spring of Gihon, a freshwater supply that still gushes roughly 250,000 gallons of fresh water a day! David’s men climbed through the water shaft to gain entry into the city allowing them to conquer it. This eventually became Jerusalem which started on the slopes leading down to the Kidron Valley, but first Jebus was renamed the City of David.

David fortified the walls and built a palace for himself, but something troubled him. Where is God’s dwelling? The most important symbol of God’s presence with the people had been the Ark of the Covenant, which for 2o years had resided at the home of a man named Abinadab in Kiriath Jearim. So, perhaps to honor God, but also to fortify his position among the people, David goes to retrieve the ark and bring it to the City of David. But first, David will learn a hard lesson about reverence and just who serves whom.
