This holiday season, the St. Luke’s community is invited to make Christmas better for nearly 100 families through our Angel Tree program. On December 2 and 9 you have the opportunity to select the name of a child or family that needs your help.

Come to the East Passage or Narthex to receive information on your selected family or child, and let the shopping begin! You will be given an ornament to hang on the Christmas tree in the Narthex to represent the child or family you are supporting. It would not be complete, of course, without the live camel and donkey! A perfect service to invite friends, family, neighbors and colleagues to attend with you.

The Longest Night (Winter Solstice) Service December 21, 7PM in Robertson Chapel A service to help people navigate one of the most emotionally difficult seasons. It is also a service for those who need a time of peace in which to spiritually prepare. Rev. Marsha Hutchinson and the HUGS Grief/Wholeness group will host a beautiful service of music, prayer, scripture, Holy Communion, with a message of hope for the light that will come from the darkness of night.

The Birth Narratives: through DVD presentations, Dr. James “Mickey” Efird, Professor Emeritus at Duke Divinity School, shares the background, circumstances and environment of Jesus’ birth as told by Luke and Matthew. 2013 ADULT TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES The St. Luke's Adult Travel Ministry announces two new trips for 2013. Both trips include round trip airfare, all local transportation, four-star hotels, daily breakfasts and some additional meals. The cost will be approximately $3000/person (double occupancy). October 2013 (specific dates to be announced soon). This will be a special opportunity to visit the historical and spiritual sites of the Holy Land with our Senior Pastor Rob Fuquay providing the context and spiritual leadership. We will visit Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, stop at the Mount of the Beatitudes and then travel down the Jordan River to the Dead Sea, where will make a stop at the impressive site of Masada. On our way to Jerusalem, we stop at Qum Rum and then spend a day in Bethlehem, visit the Garden of Gethsemene, Wailing Wall, the Via Delorosa, the Holy Church of the Sepulcher and end our week at the traditional site of the Garden Tomb.

This trip will have a special added attraction as Rev. Fuquay will be using this opportunity to video segments to be used as supplementary material to future Disciple study classes.

Those on the trip will get a preview, and in some locations, be part of the taping.

Normandy and Paris with Dr. E. Carver and Marianne McGriff August 20-28, 2013. After leading groups from St. Luke's to the shores of Normandy, France in 2011 and 2012, former St. Luke’s senior pastor Dr. Carver McGriff has once again agreed to lead a group through the historical sites of the Normandy Invasion. We will stay for five nights in Bayeux, France and visit Utah and Omaha Beaches, as well as very personal locations where Carver served following the invasion, including the very spot where he was wounded in an artillery attack. We end the visit with a meaningful stop at the American and the German cemeteries. Also included is a visit to Mont-Saint-Michel (a UNESCO world heritage site) and Giverny, to visit Monet's home and gardens, and will conclude with two nights in Paris.

Kids in Mission

The Christmas story shows that an aspect of God’s character is compassion. Our virtue for December is COMPASSION— caring enough to do something about someone else’s need.

God lovingly saw our greatest need and met it in the most remarkable way. God’s example of compassion is summarized in the monthly Memory Verse: “God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only son. Anyone who believes in him will not die but will have eternal life.”

(JOHN 3:16) God saw the world’s need and cared enough to do something.

Twice a month, Pastor Jamalyn Peigh Williamson will lead Kids in Mission (formerly Mission Possible Kids) where kids will discover new and exciting ways to change the world around them. Open to elementary aged children (K-5th grade), Kids in Mission will meet the 1st and 3rd Sunday evenings from 6-7:15PM in E107/109. The kids will be learning “Jesus is God’s son.” Their memory verse is “God loved the world so much that He gave His only son.” (JOHN 3:16) ••• Mini-Track (preschool and prekindergarten) will celebrate Christmas with a Birthday Party for Jesus on December 16 during Mini-Track worship at both 9:30 and 11AM. The celebration will include Christmas songs, a Christmas story, cupcakes and a visit from a special holiday guest.

Family Fuel December 2 Family Fuel is the service where kids bring their parents to worship! Join us the first Sunday morning of each month at 10:45AM in Robertson Chapel. This worship service is geared towards kids, but designed for families to share a faith experience together. Each month, we focus on one virtue (December is compassion) that highlights a different aspect of God’s character through singing, dancing, silly skits and games as well as a lesson from God’s Word. Also, each month kids will leave with a cool application tool to help remind them all month of what they learned in Family Fuel.

GREEN MINISTRIES Green Gratitude The Green Ministry thanks Kevin Adams and Colte Elkin for their willingness to become “BagIt Man” (see photo right) at the Fall Festival and at the November Ministry Fair. They attracted lots of attention in a costume made of old plastic bags. Remember to take your reusable bags Christmas shopping! The average plastic bag is used for five minutes and takes 1,000 years to break down in the environment. If you have extra reusable bags, hang them on the red “tree” at the west end of the Recycling Center so someone else can pick up a free bag.

Our quarterly Blood Drive will be on January 6, 2013 from 8AM-1PM in the Great Hall. The Indiana Blood Center must have 620 donors every day, seven days days a week in order to keep 60+ area hospitals supplied with an adequate and consistent blood supply. MUSIC MINISTRIES Resound the Glad Tidings!

ANNUAL CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS CONCERT Friday, November 30 at 7:30PM & Saturday, December 1 at 4PM in the Sanctuary Consider it an early gift of the season. This year’s program features music from around the world and over the centuries such as “Fum, Fum, Fum” and “A La Nanita Nana” from Spain, and “The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy” from the West Indies. The concert also includes audience favorites: “The Dream Isaiah Saw,” “One Child,” and “The First Noel,” and will feature the Chancel Choir singing “O Magnum Mysterium” (O Great Mystery) by Giovanni Gabrieli, a classical antiphonal piece that will be included in concerts during the singers’ spring tour in Italy.

More than 200 talented singers and instrumentalists from the Chancel Choir, St. Luke’s Orchestra, St. Luke’s Children’s Choirs, New Song, organist Charles Manning, the Wesleyan Ringers and guest handbell ensemble, The Circle City Ringers, will collaborate to make this wonderful musical experience possible. The concerts are free and open to all.

Refugee Assistance Ministry to Host Green Card Session for Refugees R.A.M. is sponsoring a session in January to teach refugees how to fill out the necessary forms to obtain their Green Cards. Refugees have come to our city at the invitation of the US government and Indianapolis. They are eligible to work and live here permanently, but they do need to complete the forms for a Green Card one year after their arrival.

During our session, one "teacher" will give instructions for completing each line on the form. Volunteers are needed to work with each refugee to show them how to use the computer. The session will be on a Saturday morning (TBA) in January. This is once again a community-wide event.

School officials, members of other churches, and Nora community groups such as Kiwanis have agreed to help.

New Year’s Eve Labyrinth Walk Welcome the New Year with a time of refection and celebration. Make 30 minutes on our indoor canvas labyrinth part of your New Year’s Eve ritual. Open Walk, Monday, December 31, 6-8PM in Fellowship Hall. A host/hostess will greet you and introduce you to labyrinth walking if you have not walked one before. All are welcome!

Indoor Open Labyrinth Walk Every Friday, 5-7PM, Fellowship Hall or N103/104. This prayer form is an alternative to seated meditation and offers an opportunity to end your week with a time for quiet prayer and contemplation. You may want to bring prayer requests/ celebrations to accompany you on your walk. A host or hostess will be available to answer questions or give you a brief introduction to labyrinth walking. Beauty and Belief: Crossing Bridges with the Arts of Islamic Culture at the IMA Jennifer Todd, IMA docent, will lead tours of Beauty and Belief for our congregation. This exhibit features more than 250 objects—including calligraphy, ceramics, paintings, woodcarvings and textiles that not only address what defines Islamic art, but also offers an overview of Islamic culture throughout history (visit imamuseum.org for more information). FREEDOM! A lot of you guys know that scene from “Braveheart” where William Wallace declares his freedom from English oppression. Well, imagine being able to declare your freedom from financial burdens in 2013! The St. Luke’s United Methodist Men will once again be sponsoring Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University classes beginning in January 2013. FPU has been revised and is brand new for 2013, featuring a shortened class schedule (nine weeks vs. 13) along with brand new materials studying such topics as saving, budgeting, debt reduction, insurance and investing. You don’t have to be in financial trouble to benefit from this course. Look for registration opportunities and class previews in January. When one goes through divorce, everything changes. How does one parent when one can no longer be present with your child? What does "family" look like now? Where do you turn for support and guidance? Beginning in 2013, the UMM will be organizing a ministry entitled "A Father’s Grace" which will offer men tools and practices to cope the myriad of emotional and spiritual changes that occur through divorce. A Father’s Grace offers hope to end the cycle of isolation and to assist men in redefining who they are and how to do "family" while navigating the challenges of co-parenting. On Friday, November 30 from 9AM-Noon, United Methodist Women are hosting a morning of sewing fleece hats and developing an awareness of social justice issues facing women today. United Methodist Women take an active role in communicating an awareness of various social issues facing women locally and globally. Poverty, immigration, and human trafficking are a few of the issues that United Methodist Women are addressing nationwide.

Ladies, you are invited to meet in the church Parlor at 9AM, then move to N101 and N102 to begin cutting out patterns and sewing winter fleece hats to be handed out to the children at the Methodist Children’s Home in Lebanon, Indiana and other children in need.

At 10AM we will move to the Parlor to listen to a presentation and discussion on a social justice issue, which is a focus of UMW. If you are not involved in one of our Circles, this is a perfect time to become involved and to become better informed on various issues facing women and children. Childcare will not be provided for this free event. If you have a sewing machine that you can bring that morning, that would speed up our sewing process.

Parents’ Day Out

For Children’s Music information, please see the listing under Music Ministries on page 19.

Classes (9AM-1PM) are offered for children ages 10 months to three years. PDO was established to provide parents of young children time for themselves on a regular basis. Children participate in structured play in a safe and nurturing Christian environment one, two or three days per week. Opportunities are provided for children to learn beginning social skills while having fun. Children must be 10 months old by September 1, 2012 to enroll for the 2012-13 school year.

New Check-In System We’ve launched a new computerized check-in system (CheckPoint) in Children's Ministries. Parents should register their children in this system in The Track area (East Passage). There are computer kiosks located across from the pager desk in The Track, and staff available to assist you.

Once registered, the printer will produce a name badge for each child as well as a corresponding badge for the parent to use when picking up their child(ren). Parents who are missing their name badges will only be allowed to pick up their children by obtaining permission of the children's ministry staff. Volunteers will not release a child without a badge.

The CheckPoint system will provide a greater level of organization during the check-in procedure, improvement in attendance data, and an increase in the efficiency of our overall administration. But most importantly, the automated system will heighten the overall security of children's ministry and increase parental confidence that each child is as safe as possible while within the walls of St. Luke's UMC.

SAWs Wrap Up Servants at Work (SAWs) is completing another successful season, building approximately 85 wheelchair ramps for people who were previously prisoners in their own homes. Folks from St Luke’s are extremely generous in their active support of SAWs. Someone from St. Luke’s is working on a SAWs project almost everyday between March and mid-December doing ramp building, finishing or pre-building.
