President’s Message

May 2024

We are rolling into the busy Spring season. We have a lot of great events coming up with something for everyone. Here is a quick summary of what is going on, just in the next few weeks...

First we have Thirsty Thursday at Michael’s Bar & Grill on May 2nd. Second, there is the Porsche St. Louis Spring HPDE at Worldwide Technology Raceway at Gateway on May 4th and 5th. If you have never been to a High Performance Driver’s Education event, make a point to come by and see what’s it’s about. It’s always free to watch. Third, we have a Cars & Coffee in Columbia, Illinois on May 11th. It is held on a beautiful overlook, and plenty of interesting cars will be there. Fourth, we have a joint picnic with the Kansas City Region Porsche Club on May 18th. We will meet in the middle of the state in McClung Park in Jefferson City. This should be a fantastic event and gives us a chance to meet fellow Porsche friends from KC. Fifth, we will have our first-ever All Porsche Auto Show in downtown Lebanon, Illinois on May 25th. Sixth, the Danuser’s will once again host their always-popular Memorial Day weekend social at their place in Columbia, Missouri.

Whatever you fancy, car-wise, we have it this month. So gas up your Porsche and meet us at one of these fun events. You can register for these through our calendar on STL.PCA.org or on MotorSportReg.com.

Thirsty Thursday Volunteers Needed

We are looking for volunteers to help find and arrange for locations for our monthly Thirsty Thursday casual dining evenings and other social events. We are looking for people familiar with local casual dining spots. Do you have a favorite local hangout for a casual dinner and beverage? We’d definitely like to hear your ideas. Please call Steve Sullivan at 636-219-3446.

Mark Twain Run

June 2nd Registration FULL

The annual run into the Ozarks through the Mark Twain National Forest is one of our Region’s most anticipated and popular events. Due to the complexity of touring through the twisty, forested roads and the limited space at our destination in Bixby, MO, tour participation must be limited for safety reasons. Once again, the tour reached capacity within hours of registration opening. Make sure you’re on the Region’s email notification list so you’ll know when registration for limited participation events open, so you don’t miss out on these opportunities.

Maintenance Tech

April 7th

JML Audio of St. Louis

As modern vehicles become more computerized and complicated, DIY maintenance becomes more intimidating. But much of the intimidation is really just fear of the unknown. Once you know the simple steps, there is no reason not to tackle a number of jobs that you can still do in your garage.

This year’s maintenance tech session focused on the steps required to perform an oil and brake fluid change on a 991 generation of the 911 and how to replace a weak rear hatch strut on a Cayenne - both jobs are relatively simple and can be accomplished with a few tools in your home garage or shop. Of course, you can always take the vehicles to a professional shop to have this done, and then pay profession shop fees. Or you can invest that money in a few tools which you’ll only need to buy once and have on hand for the next time you need and oil change or need to make simply repairs around your home or vehiclesthe decision is yours once you know how to perform these tasks.

Members gathered in the service area at JML Audio of St. Louis as Dan Hinkebein led those attending through the procedures to safely perform the fluid changes and replace the hatch strut - relatively simple tasks once you conquer the uncertainty over if you can do the tasks.

Thanks to Josh and the staff at JML Audio of St. Louis for opening their facility as a training facility for the day, and thanks to Dan Hinkebein for sharing his expertise with our members to help bolster their confidence that not all maintenance requires complex equipment and expensive professional training.

April 8th Eclipse Run

During our annual planning meeting, it was suggested we put a tour to the Solar Eclipse Area of Totality on our Regional schedule. But that raised a question - since the eclipse was on a Monday, would there be any members willing to join us early in the week to make the run south? So notices were posted here to determine if enough people would want to make the drive on a Monday to warrant the planning and arrangements with a host venue. Knowing we were surely going to run into heavy traffic no matter where we chose to go, we purposely limited our number of participants low as to not end up with a large number of Porsches bogged down in heavy traffic near our destination. The replies to our inquiries more than filled our limit of participants, thus we didn’t open the tour on msreg, and chose to communicate directly with interested participants by email.

Knowing we were probably going to run into traffic congestion, we chose an early departure time in hopes of beating the majority of the traffic. For the most part, that strategy worked. Our tour ran into significant traffic congestion just outside Carbondale. Most of the tour made it to Blue Sky Vineyards without much trouble, except for our sweep car which found itself grid locked in downtown Carbondale traffic after a college student’s car gave up the ghost in the middle of the street surrounded by out-of-state visitors who had no idea how to navigate around Carbondale - result: instant parking lot in downtown Carbondale. But eventually, the tail of the tour made it to the winery to join the thousands of people awaiting the eclipse. Luckily, we made it to Blue Sky when we did. Shortly after arrival, Blue Sky started turning people away - the winery parking was at capacity. Special thanks to member Eric Graham from Marion for searching out Blue Sky Winery as our destination and to Bob and Lisa Naes for leading our group south.

13

The winery turned into a party with people filling the hillsides with chairs and blankets, awaiting the phenomenon about to take place. In the meantime, bands entertained the visitors who had plenty of food and wine options to chose from as the colors of nature began changing into eerie hues as noon approached. Our group spread out on blankets just outside the winery tasting room, enjoying the food, the wine and the conversation as the sky darkened... and then...could this really be 2 in the afternoon? The temperature dropped noticeably...the breeze quieted...and

suddenly it was dark...but the reason was very apparent overhead. And as the breezed quieted, so did the crowd.

Just as quickly as it darkened, the light began to return. And the party began again until it was time to head home.

Unfortunately, everyone had the same idea, and the 2 hour trip down became a more than 4 hour slog home on clogged highways - a real challenge to that foot on the clutch...but it was a trip worth the challenge. Next eclipse within easy driving distance? About a century in the future.

Porsche St. Louis Cars & Community

April 13th

Porsche St. Louis and it’s sibling Ferrari dealership across the street, Cavallino Rosso St. Louis celebrated fine automotive engineering with an Open House on April 13th. The two dealerships opened their doors to fans of fine automobiles and closed the street between the two facilities for a street party built around great cars and the people who love them. Both dealerships rolled out prime examples of their marques for all to see and enjoy. The collection of beautiful cars was beyond compare, and the car enthusiasts were enthralled by the variety and quality of the engineering on display.

Food and beverage trucks provided refreshments for all, and Porsche St. Louis was kind enough to allow us to set up and man our Regional tent so that we could spread the word about the events and people that make up St. Louis Region. It was an active morning, as fans wanted to know more about our road and track events. It was truly a party like no other in the St. Louis area, and St. Louis Region was proud to be a part of it. Special thanks to James Drake and the staff of Porsche St. Louis for allowing us to be a part of such a colorful and unique gathering of fabulous cars and excited car enthusiasts. It just doesn’t get much better than this!

CPG Drive & Dine to Emmet’s, Fayette MO April 13th

Mother Nature must be a big fan of Emmet’s Kitchen & Tap in Fayette, MO because she almost always provides fabulous weather when our mid-Missouri members put together their popular Drive & Dine excursion to this great restaurant in mid-Missouri. The hungry PCAers gathered outside the Boone County Fire Protection Office early in the morning for the mandatory driver’s briefing before heading out for the luncheon drive.

It was a typically sunny, Spring morning as the Porsches took to the road for the challenging drive to Fayette. Once again, Nature didn’t disappoint with her choice of weather for the almost hour long drive to Fayette, which only made the appetites grow among the crowd that filled the front of the most popular destination in historic Fayette, MO.

The Run to Emmet’s is always one of the most anticipated tours in Central Missouri, and tour organizer Rob Fleming once again provided a fantastic tour under fabulous skies to great food with good friends. Thanks, Rob and thanks to all who came out to kick of the Columbia Porsche Group’s season of Drive & Dine events. Watch your calendar for more in the months’ ahead.

Tour to the Terrace at French Village

The Tour to The Terrace was initiated by PCA member Bradley Fox, whose sister and brother-in-law own the winery. Bradley and Lis Goforth-Naes teamed up to lead a group of 21 cars and 37 guests on a short drive to French Village for a casual lunch. Among their menu of snacks, sandwiches, and flatbreads, and of course wine, The Terrace offered two “Porsche” specials. Everyone had a fun, relaxing lunch accompanied by live music. This is truly a hidden gem, and we hope to make it an annual event.

Porsche Off-Road

Did you know that Porsche has a long history of Off-Roading? What if I told you that Porsche has been off-roading since the early 1950’s. In the early 1950’s Porsche developed the Type 597 Jagdwagen. It is an amphibious 4x4 with a water ght stamped steel monocoque chassis and body powered by a modified 4-cylinder 356 engine. The vehicle has a top speed of 62 MPH and is able to climb hills with a 65% grade. Only 71 Jagdwagen’s were produced but at least 50 sll survive today. Some were even oponed with propellers and rudders so that they could travel up and down streams.

Then in the late 1970’s Porsche and Marni Racing took the 911 on a successful off-road racing campaign People were amazed that a Sports Car could handle the harsh condions of off-road rally racing. Turning heads and dropping jaws, it’s what Porshe has always done.

19

Following up in the 1980’s with the all-wheel drive 953, wearing the Rothmans livery, winning the Paris-Dakar rally its 1st time out. The Paris-Dakar has been known as at the world’s toughest and harshest event.

Then who can forget the always lusted after Porsche 959. Originally built for the 1986 Paris-Dakar Rally (the toughest and longest in history), Porsche went on to produce 292 road going 959’s. Unfortunately, these were never approved for import and use in the US. (Yes, there are a few 959’s which were brought into the US with special permission and now that they are over 30 years old they may be imported as collectors’ items as they have never been subjected to or passed NHTSA safety standards.)

20

It’s with this off-road heritage that Porsche built first the Cayenne in 2003 and its little brother the Macan 2014. These vehicles were not built to only play shuttle for the kid’s activities but to allow owners to go out and take on the challenges where the pavement ends. They are very capable off-road vehicles.

Based upon some recent discussions we would like to see more Cayenne and Macan owners not only bring their vehicles out to our typical events but, we would like to potentially offer a light off-road tour to allow the vehicles to be let off their leash and allowed to explore the other terrains they were intended for. If you own a Cayenne, Macan, or other Porsche Off-Road Vehicle, please click this link and fill out our survey: https://www. surveymonkey.com/r/CZZSR9Z

NEW St. Louis Region

Car Badge NOW Available

A redesigned St. Louis Region car badge highlighting our Region’s 65th Anniversary is NOW available. These 3 inch diameter cast metal badges feature images signifying our Regional activities. These top quality badges will last a lifetime. Each grill badge costs $35 and can be purchased by contacting Steve Sullivan at ssullivan@stl.pca.org. They can also be ordered through our website store and through motorsportreg.com.

We have also received static cling decals for our 65th Anniversary. These colorful 2 inch stickers have an adhesive backing to stick to your vehicle or anything you wish to decorate with our PCA logo. These logos are printed on clear vinyl like the PCA logo you receive from PCA National when you receive your PCA membership card. These stickers and clings will be given out at Regional events this summer. These items are available NOW. Show your pride of the St. Louis Region!
