Early in my PCA career in the ‘90’s we had fewer than 300 members in St. Louis Region. The number of events we had back then was much less than we have today. My wife and I thought it would be fun to join one of the tours going to Hermann, MO. You know, visiting wine country...what could be better than that, right?
Well, on the day of the tour, a few of us showed up at a mall (remember those?), someone chatted about ‘keep up’ for a moment, and very little else. The lead car disappeared over the horizon, and we were off to the races! The so-called tour was a tension-filled race to Hermann that was anything but fun. We were not happy with passing and dodging tractors and farm equipment that seemed to be around every corner. Once we got into town, parking was ‘on our own’, and people drifted from place to place. Needless to say, it was not the kind of tour we expected, and not the kind we were going to sign up for again. We didn’t go on that tour the following season, and heard someone actually went off the road. No one got hurt, but the repair bill was painful.
The following year, I wasn’t planning to go, but longed for a fun drive, when my wife said “why don’t we volunteer and organize it yourself?” So I did. With a little help from others, we planned a leisurely tour (even drove the speed limit!) and threw in a rest stop at a seedy gas station. After the tour, we received several compliments from people saying they really enjoyed the sane pace, where they could actually enjoy the scenery on the way to the wineries. We made improvements each year and attendance grew. As it grew larger, more people graciously volunteered to help with it. Now it is one of our most popular tours.
The point is, you only get out of anything what you put into it. I understand we all have way too many things going on in our lives. You will find that the more involved you get, the more you will want to do as you continue to meet more amazing people. The real question is how to get involved. There are many ways. At the next event, ask if you can help out, as there is always something going on. All of the tours, HPDE’s, Thirsty Thursdays, Car Shows have been planned, organized, and run by people who volunteered earlier. Who knows where the next great idea for an event might come from? But I know it will come from one of you.
Any volunteer group can only survive and thrive through the involvement of its members. PCA is no different and needs your help to continue to maintain our membership
and even better, grow our membership. It’s up to all of us to continue to grow our PCA, as well as get the most out of this awesome organization.
We are in the middle of our busy season, and last month we had several events. We had HPDE Instructor Training, where several new Instructors joined the ranks, followed by a very well attended Spring HPDE. The Cars & Coffee at the Sunset Overlook in Columbia, IL, brought many people out to show off their Porsches. Then we had a great picnic in Jefferson City where more than 55 members from Kansas City drove in to meet with us. By the time you read this, we will have also had the Porsches on the Bricks in Lebanon, Illinois and the Memorial Day Social gathering at the Danuser’s home near Columbia, MO.
There are many more events coming up...so be sure to check out the calendar in this edition.

The annual run into the Ozarks through the Mark Twain National Forest is one of our Region’s most anticipated and popular events. Due to the complexity of touring through the twisty, forested roads and the limited space at our destination in Bixby, MO, tour participation must be limited for safety reasons. Once again, the tour reached capacity within hours of registration opening. Make sure you’re on the Region’s email notification list so you’ll know when registration for limited participation events open, so you don’t miss out on these opportunities.

As summer approaches, the High Performance Driver Education season is well underway. Our St. Louis Region has been running DE events for over 40 years with a great emphasis on fun, safety, and education. Of course, the education part can’t happen without great classroom and in-car instructors, so every other years, we organize a PCA National Instructor Training event in order to maintain or increase the number of instructors who can come to our events to teach participants great car control skills. There’s a saying in the HPDE community that it takes a special kind of person to be a driving instructor - one smart enough to teach the skills and brave (or dumb) enough to get into a car with a total stranger, on a race track, to coach those skills - and then urge them to go faster!
We want to thank both Chuck Tucker, a PCA National Instructor Trainer for coming in to lead the classroom instruction and our current instructors who acted as mentors and coached the new instructor candidates during the on’track sessions. Training took place on the Friday of the Spring 2024 HPDE, and these folks did a great job. All of our candidates passed with flying colors and are now recognized as PCA National Driving Instructors. Congratulations to John Wright, Tony Pitale, Ed Yepez, John Noto, Ed Feikert, Greg Mefford, Michael Carr, Juan Echeverry, Jim Ward, Mike Ballowe, Walter Hermida, Richard Johnston, Austin Kent, Aaron Newton, and Jonathan Niezing.
Without new instructors stepping up, we couldn’t have HPDE’s, a big thanks to all of the current and new PCA instructors!
Jim Smith Chief Driving InstructorA couple dozen Porsches swarmed on a popular eastside entertainment venue just outside Columbia, IL early Saturday, May 11th. Sunset Overlook is a popular watering hole for east side residents, especially around sunset due to the venue’s unobstructed view west - perfect to watch the sun set over South St. Louis County.
More and more 4-door and SUV Porsches are coming out to our Regional events, and we hope interest from among those 4-door and SUV owners continues to grow. Look for more events catered to the nontraditional sports car crowd in the near future.
Our Porschephiles munched on locally produced pastries and woke up with fresh brewed coffee while getting a close up look at Porsches of a wide variety of models and vintages. There was even an impromptu lesson on putting up the cabriolet top of modern Boxsters and Boxster Spyders - No they are not the same. Lesson learned? It might just be easier to let the top down if it’s not raining.
Thanks to Geoff Baltz for putting this casual gathering together. Join us in the fun!
Saturday, May 18th, 23 members of the St. Louis Region and more than 50 from Kansas City Region met in Jefferson City for a group picnic. Something like this has not been done in a long time. Several of our Region members from Columbia and Jefferson City were instrumental in finding a suitable park halfway between St. Louis and Kansas City. McClung Park in Jefferson City was chosen because of the location and large parking lot. The plans were set in place over the winter, and the pavilion was rented. A local delicatessen provided several box lunch options and salads for all the participants.
The St. Louis Region started our tour in Chesterfield Valley. We tried to stay off the Interstates, within reason to savor the curvy roads that crisscross our state. It took us down Highway 100, then onto Highway 50 through Union, Gerald, Rosebud and several other small towns as we took the scenic route. The group from Kansas City arrived shortly after us, and we had a car show going on in the parking lot.
Arriving at the park in Jeff City, deli sandwiches and salads from Jefferson City Deli were ready for us to enjoy. After everyone tore through lunch, we had a multiple choice Porsche Trivia Quiz. The quiz consisted of 40 questions covering Porsche history, PCA history and technical subjects. Each table was a team, and everyone combined their knowledge to pick the best answers. One table, with a combination of St. Louis and
and Kansas City folks, had the highest score, answering 31 of the 40 questions correctly.
The turnout was larger than expected for a first event, and it proves to me that there is a lot of passion to connect with other Porsche folks.
After the trivia quiz, everyone took a walk through the parking lot to choose the People’s Favorite car. It was actually a pretty tough call because of all the nice and unique Porsches there that day. But in the end, Steve Hargrove from Kansas City won the People’s Favorite award with his very clean ‘96 993 Turbo.
Thank you to Ric Smith and Fred and Nancy Lee for Leading / Sweeping the St. Louis Region tour portion, and a big Thank You goes out to Kim and Allen Maddy, Robby Robinson and Scott Orr for the hard work they put in to scout out Jeff City, find the food vendor and make this event a success.
Thanks much, Steve
The dates and locations of the TireRack.com Street Survival events in the St. Louis area have been revealed. For years, St. Louis Region has worked alongside the St. Louis Chapter of the BMW Car Club of America and St. Louis Region, Sports Car Club of America to host this advanced car handling education to local teenagers. The schedule calls for these events on:
June 22 - at St. Charles Airport (Smart Field)
July 20 - at St. Charles Airport (Smart Field)
August 31 - at Family Arena in St. Charles
Sept. 7 - at St. Charles Airport (Smart Field)
Oct. 19 - at St. Charles Airport (Smart Field)
At each of these training sessions, one of the clubs takes organizational responsibility for the school while the other clubs assist by providing volunteer instructors and operational assistants. Right now, it appears that St. Louis Region will be taking the lead for the July session while supplying instructors and workers for the remaining events. For more information on becoming an instructor / coach or just volunteer, contact streetsurvival.org
Porsche Cars North America has once again picked Porsche St. Louis as a Porsche Premier Center for 2024. The selection of Porsche St. Louis as a Premier Center places it among the top 25 Porsche dealers in the U.S. The Premier Center honor recognizes those dealers who go above and beyond Porsche’s high quality standards and who demonstrate a real passion for the marque and service to its customers.
Joe Lawrence, PCNA Executive Vice President and COO, recognized Porsche St. Louis’ commitment to the brand and its customers, “The team at Porsche St. Louis performs at a high level in all aspects of the business. We applaud and appreciate the commitment they show the brand and to Porsche customers every day.”
Each year, PCNA reviews each of the marque’s 198 American dealers in terms of the dealer’s performance in sales, marketing and customer service. Only the top 25 dealerships who demonstrate consistent excellence in all areas are recognized as a “Premier Center”.
Porsche St. Louis’ General Manager James Drake points to IndiGO Auto Group’s “commitment to excellence in every aspect of our dealership, ensuring an unparalleled experience for our clients” as key to winning the Premier Center Award.
Porsche has scheduled a world-wide unveiling of the new 911 Hybrid at 8 am, Tuesday, May 28th. You can watch Porsche pull the cover off the 911 Hybrid on Porsche.com...the Porsche YouTube channel...and on Porsche’s LinkedIn page.
The 2nd weekend of May proved to be a very good one for Porsche Motorsports. It started in Belgium with the World Endurance Championship 6 Hours of SpaFrancorchamps. This was the first endurance race pitting the factory Porsche Penske and customer 963 teams against the full WEC Hypercar field. It was a hard fought race until the final minutes before the checkered flag when the Porsche Penske 963 started duking it out with the customer Hertz Team JOTA 963. The 2 Porsche Hypercars were able to build up a one-minute lead over the 2 Ferrari AF Corses Hypercars. In the end, the customer Hertz Team JOTA 963 pulled out a 12 second margin over the Porsche Penske to take the team’s first victory and the first outright win for a customer 963.
Porsche Penske boss, Roger Penske watched his European drivers Kevin Estre... Andre Lotterer and Laurens Vanthoor accept their 2nd Place trophies before getting on his jet for his personal race on the other side of the world for the start of the IMSA WeatherTech Motul Course de Monterey at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “The Captain” Penske made it in time to watch his Porsche Penske 963 play catchup for most of the race. Once again, the Cadillac Racing V-Series R GTP racers seemed to have an edge in overall speed, leaving the Penske 963 eating their dust for most of the 2-hour, 40-minute race. But both Porsches never gave up, and with just minutes to go, the #6 963 with Nick Tandy at the wheel closed in on the #31 Whelen Cadillac. And it was time Tandy played the age old race driver’s game - if you can’t outrun the competition, pull up against their back bumper and try to force them into making a mistake.
With 12 minutes to go in the race, the Whelen Cadillac and Penske Porsche pushed their way into GTD traffic. Whelen driver Jack Aitken attempted an outside pass where there just wasn’t room, and Tandy pounced on an inside pass. As Aitken fought to bring the Cadillac back under control in the trackside gravel, Tandy pushed the Penske 963 to a 6 second lead over the Cadillac. From there is was a flat-out sprint as Tandy held off the Cadillac to score a 5 second win over the Cadillac. And 3rd Place in the GTP class went to the #7 Porsche Penske.
And as the dust settled on the GTP class battle, the AO Racing 911 GT3R squeezed out a 9 second win over the Pfaff Motorsports McLaren. The GTP and GTDPro class victories went down in the record books as Porsche’s 600 and 601 victories in IMSA history.
3 victories in some of the biggest of all sports car races in one weekend - that’s what you call a VERY good weekend.
In mid-May, Porsche Motorsports pushed Porsche racing into the future. Beginning with the May 19th Porsche Supercup race as a support race before the Italian F1 race, all the Porsche Supercup-spec 911s ran the race on synthetic e-fuel made at the Porsche backed e-fuels plant in southern Chile. And Porsche has promised that EVERY one of the 8 Porsche Supercup races run this year will be powered by the man made liquid fuel made from drawing carbon dioxide out of the air...mixing it with hydrogen made by breaking down water to form e-methanol which is then converted into a synthetic fuel capable of powering the 3.6-liter flat six engines in the 911 GT3 Cup cars. Porsche Motorsports says the only changes made for the GT3s to run on the synthetic e-fuel is an update in the engine’s computer software.
Test drivers who have driven 911s running on conventional gasoline and the new synthetic fuel says the only noticeable difference is a slightly different smell in the engine exhaust. Acceleration and top speed are no different whether the 911 is running off gasoline or on the man-made syn-fuel.
Porsche is setting aside more than 13,000 gallons of the modern syn-fuel to power the 32 race cars through the 8 races on the Supercup European schedule which began in Italy on the 19th of May and winds up with a race in Monza, Italy on September 1st.
So what’s the big deal? Maybe because European regulators who are pushing to outlaw the sale of petroleum powered internal combustion engine vehicles have given Porsche the green light to continue the sales of ICE cars so long as those vehicles can run off e-fuel. Porsche’s plan to make the 911 the last internal combustion engine powered car on the market is already taking shape.
The Future is HERE this summer on race tracks all over Europe.
Porsche will be using the results of this year’s Supercup race series powered by the new synthetic e-Fuel to try to convince governmental agencies all around the world to modify their bans on internal combustion engine powered vehicles. So far, the European Union is waiting to see the results of the use of the synfuel. It appears the EU might be willing to revise previously announced ICE bans if tests show the e-Fuels can approach the goal of zero tailpipe emissions.
But Porsche might have a tough battle ahead as more and more states move towards a goal of zero emissions by 2035. Naturally, it’s not surprising that California is leading the charge towards greener vehicles. California was the first state to require automakers and car dealers sell only electric vehicles and certain plug-in hybrids by 2035. But a number of other states have also raised the clean air banner. So far, 17 states have adopted at least a partial ban on gas powered vehicle sales, but only 11 have put plans in place to prohibit the sale of new gas powered vehicles.
Delaware - A year ago in April 2023, Delaware passed laws to strengthen the states existing Clean Air laws to come in line with the California regulations by 2035.
Maine - A civilian petition drive pushed the Maine legislature to move towards acceptance of the California standards. Public hearings on the potential ban of gas powered sales continue. Right now, it appears Maine might be in line to ban gas powered vehicle sales by 2028.
Maryland - Maryland was the seventh state to fall in line behind the California clean air standards. Maryland claims a ban on gas powered vehicles could spare the state as much as $40 million in lost productivity due to respiratory illnesses.
Massachusetts - Massachusetts became one of the first states to jump on the California Clean Air bandwagon. Massachusetts has passed trigger laws to link the state directly to changes in the California Clean Air regulations should future changes pass.
New Jersey - Jersey became the 6th state to adopt laws to ban gas-powered vehicles by 2035. New Jersey had previously passed laws to enforce a gas powered ban by 2050, but moved the deadline earlier a year ago.
New York - New York was #4 in line to get behind the tough California Clean Air standards. Legislation to “require all new passenger cars, pickup trucks and SUVs sold in New York State to be zero emissions by 2035” was passed into law last summer.
Oregon - Oregon became the 5th state to adopt the strict California standards in December 2022.
Pennsylvania - Pennsylvania law makers have passed a very vague law moving towards the ban on new gas powered vehicles. While the Penn state law moves the state to adopt the strict Clean Air standards, the laws do not spell out specific time lines or moves to put the ban into effect.
Rhode Island - Rhode Island has been behind the Clean Air movement since it adopted the strict standards a year ago in May 2023. Rhode Island is going a step further by leashing in emissions not just on cars and trucks, but also on other transportation sectors like buses, trains and other forms of public transportation.
Vermont - Vermont is pushing the time line a little faster than even California’s strict standards. Back in November, 2022, Vermont approved laws requiring zer0emissions new vehicle sales by 2030
Washington - Washington state has also passed trigger laws directly linking Washington state’s clean air laws to California’s stringent regulations. Washington has been on the Clean Air movement since August 2022.
But these 11 forerunners have attracted the attention of at least a half dozen other states contemplating gas-vehicle restrictions. The Colorado legislature passed laws following the strict California standards, but Colorado Governor Polis rejected the move opting instead for rules enforcing standards only as EVs become more affordable and practical. Right now, Colorado is on a path requiring EVs account for 80% of new car sales by 2032.
Political battles in the Connecticut legislature forced the state to back away from adopting the California standards for now, but the political fighting continues.
Virginia had previously adopted the strict anti gas-powered rules, but a vicious battle continues in the Virginia state house to see if the strict standards can be repealed this year.
Minnesota car dealers sued the state to overturn previously passed gas-powered sales restrictions. The suit to block the ban failed in January, but the battle is still very alive as dealers worry about their future if the only gas-powered vehicles they can sell would be used cars and SUVs.
Of course, these restrictions would not apply to the sale or resale of used vehicles, and they have no effect on gasoline sales, but all eyes are on the future of the synthetic e-Fuels. Can e-Fuels be the salvation of ICE vehicles? This season’s Porsche Supercup season may give us a hint about the future.
Did you know that Porsche has a long history of Off-Roading? What if I told you that Porsche has been off-roading since the early 1950’s. In the early 1950’s Porsche developed the Type 597 Jagdwagen. It is an amphibious 4x4 with a water ght stamped steel monocoque chassis and body powered by a modified 4-cylinder 356 engine. The vehicle has a top speed of 62 MPH and is able to climb hills with a 65% grade. Only 71 Jagdwagen’s were produced but at least 50 sll survive today. Some were even oponed with propellers and rudders so that they could travel up and down streams.
Then in the late 1970’s Porsche and Marni Racing took the 911 on a successful off-road racing campaign People were amazed that a Sports Car could handle the harsh condions of off-road rally racing. Turning heads and dropping jaws, it’s what Porshe has always done.
Following up in the 1980’s with the all-wheel drive 953, wearing the Rothmans livery, winning the Paris-Dakar rally its 1st time out. The Paris-Dakar has been known as at the world’s toughest and harshest event.
Then who can forget the always lusted after Porsche 959. Originally built for the 1986 Paris-Dakar Rally (the toughest and longest in history), Porsche went on to produce 292 road going 959’s. Unfortunately, these were never approved for import and use in the US. (Yes, there are a few 959’s which were brought into the US with special permission and now that they are over 30 years old they may be imported as collectors’ items as they have never been subjected to or passed NHTSA safety standards.)
It’s with this off-road heritage that Porsche built first the Cayenne in 2003 and its little brother the Macan 2014. These vehicles were not built to only play shuttle for the kid’s activities but to allow owners to go out and take on the challenges where the pavement ends. They are very capable off-road vehicles.
Based upon some recent discussions we would like to see more Cayenne and Macan owners not only bring their vehicles out to our typical events but, we would like to potentially offer a light off-road tour to allow the vehicles to be let off their leash and allowed to explore the other terrains they were intended for. If you own a Cayenne, Macan, or other Porsche Off-Road Vehicle, please click this link and fill out our survey: https://www. surveymonkey.com/r/CZZSR9Z

A redesigned St. Louis Region car badge highlighting our Region’s 65th Anniversary is NOW available. These 3 inch diameter cast metal badges feature images signifying our Regional activities. These top quality badges will last a lifetime. Each grill badge costs $35 and can be purchased by contacting Steve Sullivan at ssullivan@stl.pca.org. They can also be ordered through our website store and through motorsportreg.com.
We have also received static cling decals for our 65th Anniversary. These colorful 2 inch stickers have an adhesive backing to stick to your vehicle or anything you wish to decorate with our PCA logo. These logos are printed on clear vinyl like the PCA logo you receive from PCA National when you receive your PCA membership card. These stickers and clings will be given out at Regional events this summer. These items are available NOW. Show your pride of the St. Louis Region!
