President’s Message February 2024

As the new incoming President, I am very

grateful for all the Board members who are donating their time and talent to bring all of this year’s events together. You couldn’t find a more friendly group of folks. As a matter of fact, volunteering has always been a strong suit of the St. Louis Region. The Club has been around, and active, since 1959. There are 147 local Regions across the United States and Canada. St. Louis was the 14th, formed in January 1959. (Perhaps it should be noted that 4 of the original 14 Regions chartered before St. Louis Region’s admission into PCA failed and returned their charters back to PCA - making St. Louis Region the 10th oldest active Region in PCA.) A great benefit of being a member of PCA is that there is at least one person in the St. Louis Club that can answer literally any question you might have about your Porsche. Whether you have an old one or a new one, you will find a wealth of knowledge amongst our nearly 1200 members. Make some time to come to at least one event this year and meet like-minded Porsche lovers. The 68th annual Porsche Parade will be in Birmingham, AL this summer. This is within a day’s drive of St. Louis and should be on everyone’s radar. If you have not been to a Parade, you owe it to yourself to investigate and seriously consider it. Registration opens on January 31st at 11 am central. Be sure to check out the Parade site www.porscheparade.org ahead of time so you are familiar with all the options available. Don’t wait until registration begins to check things out. There are way too many options, and events fill up fast! Steve Sullivan

Thinking about chasing the Solar Eclipse? April 8th

In a little over 2 months on Monday, April 8th, we will once

again have the rare opportunity to see an eclipse of the sun where the moon crosses between the sun and the earth and casts a shadow, briefly blocking out the sun’s light. Here in St. Louis, we should be able to see a partial eclipse, but by travelling around 100 miles to the south, we could see (Nature co-operating, of course) the total eclipse of the sun. The totality of the eclipse over areas such as Cape Girardeau or Carbondale, IL will last about 4 minutes as the moon totally blocks our view of the sun. This will be the last time this century that we will have the opportunity to experience a solar eclipse within easy driving distance of St. Louis. Several members have expressed interest in touring to one of the total eclipse areas. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to crowd into these areas to experience the eclipse darkness. If we want to get a spot in the area of totality, we’re going to have to leave early and make a day of this drive. Would you be interested in joining us? CPG Tentative 2024 Calendar St. Louis Region covers a lot of territory, stretching half way across Missouri and all

the way eastward across Illinois and south to the Arkansas and Kentucky borders. Members at the distant edges of our Region face long drives to participate in our act ivies centered out of the St. Louis Metro area, so we encourage our distant members to get together for social events and tour closer to their homes. Thus, our mid-Missouri members gather many times each year as the CPG (Columbia Porsche Group) - St. Louis Region members who gather together for their own local events with the full support and encouragement of their ‘administrative region’ - St. Louis Region. Your patience has paid off...

the Macan EV is finally HERE! After almost 2 years of delays while Porsche waited

for VW’s software unit to iron the kinks out of the control software, the electric Macan EV is finally on its way to dealer showrooms. Porsche authorized dealers to begin taking orders for the electric SUV on January 25th. The gasoline powered Macan is Porsche’s biggest seller with more than 87,300 small SUVs rolling out onto America streets. And the all electric version of the Porsche family hauler is expected to tally up a significant rise in sales in 2024. The Macan EV will unleash more than 600 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque with the push of your right foot. Since the Macan EV does not need the open front grill to allow cooling air to push through the combustion engine radiator, Porsche engineers have been able to slim down or close air intakes in the Macan design to make the Macan one of the lowest aero drag designs on the road. The Macan EV’s drag coefficient of 0.25 is significantly less than the 0.35 coefficient of its gas powered sibling. That significant reduction in aero drag and the Macan’s 100 kWh lithium-ion battery allows the EV to go about 300 miles in normal driving mode between recharging. The Macan EV is built on Porsche’s new 800V PPE platform which has been designed for fast charging of up to 270 kW. At that rate, you can charge the battery from 10% to 80% in just a little over 20 minutes. Porsche has engineered a high-voltage switch in the battery to basically split the battery into 2 smaller 400V batteries during charging which can be recharged at the same time, thereby cutting the recharging time nearly in half. Although few Macan EVs will probably ever see the off-road terrain, the Macan comes with an Active Suspension Management system with two-valve shock dampers, air suspension and a rear-axle transverse lock for more sure footed motoring in slippery or off-road environments. And when you are rushing down the highway, the Macan EV throws in Porsche’s rear-axle steering which can steer the rear wheels up to five degrees for quicker, more stable turns at speed. It’s been a bit of a wait, but the Macan EV is finally here. Since the smaller Macan tends to be a popular choice for hauling people and packages for short trips close to home, the Macan EV should fit perfectly into that market segment. And it will definitely not disappoint - check it out! 13

2023 was a good year for Porsche Despite a dip in fourth-quarter sales here in the U.S., Porsche enjoyed a good year

in 2023. More than 19,000 vehicles rolled out of dealer showrooms in 2023 Quarter 4, but strong sales in the early part of the year allowed the marque to record a 7.6% increase in sales for the year with total sales of 75,415 vehicles. Porsche’s 4th Quarter sales leader was none other than the Taycan with closing quarter sales of 2,358 cars up 58% from the same time in 2022. The strong Taycan sales pushed Porsche’s electric EV sales to 10% of the sales for the year. 7,570 Taycans hit the road in 2023...and comparing that to Porsche’s total sales, you find that Porsche’s EV makes up more than 10% of total Porsche sales in the U.S. Sales of Porsche’s EV continue to show that the skeptics were wrong - Porsche people are will in accept an electric Porsche. In fact, Porschephiles seem to be more willing to go electric that other VW fans. For example, despite an incredible 41% increase in Audi EV sales, Audi e-tron GT sales in 2023 didn’t even reach half of Porsche’s Taycan sales figures. U.S. Taycan sales of more than 28,800 EVs since it’s introduction in 2019 has been a pleasant surprise, even for top Porsche brass. But Porsches sales leaders continue to be the Porsche SUVs. Macan sales in 2023 fell just short of 27,000 units - well over double the sales of Porsche’s flagship 911 models which ended the year way back at 11,692 cars. Even Cayenne sales easily overpowered 911 sales with more almost 20,500 Cayennes rolling out the dealership doors in 2023. Of course, 911 sales continue to lead Porsche ‘car’ sales. Sales of the 718 Boxster and Cayman models tallied up to 4,526 units with Panamera sales almost matching 718 sales with 4,205 Panameras tallied on Porsche’s balance sheet. Sales numbers for Porsche’s plug-in Panamera and Cayenne models are not broken out from the ICE versions of those vehicles, so their numbers are included in the final sales figures of those models. World-wide, Porsche delivered 320,221 vehicles in 2023 - 3 % more than in 2022. A 12% increase in demand in Europe powered the sales increase - outpacing the sales increase in Porsche’s German homeland which recorded only a 10% jump in vehicle deliveries. Meanwhile, sales in the North America climbed 9 % over the previous year. Nagging economic problems in China dampened sales in the world’s largest market with sales dropping by more than 15%. Porsche noted that ongoing economic challenges in China will most likely result in weak sales again in 2024 and into the foreseeable future. 14

EVs by the Numbers The concept of losing internal combustion engines to electric drivetrains is a very

painful prospect to many gear heads, but the trend is clearly underway. Of course, we always hear that it is to save the environment and to battle climate change. But those truly close to the auto industry say there is a much more basic reason that auto makers are agreeing to the shift...and it all begins in the accounting / payroll department. There is a much more basic difference between ICE powered vehicles and EV...and it’s what really counts to auto makers - the parts count. How many parts does it take to make the average internal combustion powered vehicle? Of course, that varies...the more options on the base vehicle will naturally add to the number of parts that need to be assembled to make the completed vehicle, but on the average, with all the pistons... connecting rods...valves...fuel injectors...gears in the transmission...the parts tally adds up to somewhere to an average of about 30,000 parts. EVs replace all those engine parts with an electric motor made up of significantly fewer parts. EV’s don’t have an exhaust system...no fuel system...no complicated clutch or torque converter and multiple gears in the transmission...no spark plugs...no fuel pump...or radiator. Of course, the EV has a battery, but that is one huge part...or lots of the same parts repeated over and over again - connected in series. Bottom line - the average EV has between 20-30% fewer parts. EVs don’t require the auto maker to forge engine blocks and complicated metal parts. Many of the primary parts of an EV - the electric motor...the battery...etc can be contracted from an outside supplier. Bottom line here - the assembly of EVs allow the auto maker to roll completed vehicles off the assembly line with 20-30% fewer assembly workers - fewer workers who will not be on the payroll...not need healthcare plans...not be on the pension rolls in the future - all big money savings for the auto maker. 20-30% fewer parts (either manufactured or purchased from outside sources) + 2030% fewer assembly line workers = HUGE savings for the auto maker...and that is definitely being felt in the auto industry board rooms when they look into a future of still having vehicles to sell with significant materials and labor savings. Consumer wishes and desires hold little sway over corporate decisions when significant cost savings are on the table. In the end, THAT will be what powers the EV revolution of the future.

Which Auto Company employs the most workers? Maybe it’s the standard American ego, but many tend to believe that our large Amer-

ica auto makers are among the largest in the world...but when you look at how many workers the world’s car companies employ, our U.S. car companies are surprisingly low on the list of employers. So who is #1? Over the last few years, there have been a number of stories about the heated competition between Volkswagen and Toyota for the #1 spot in world auto sales. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that those two are also competing for the title over who has the most workers. Right now, the #1 spot goes to VW by a wide margin. VW and it’s ten auto brands with 119 production plants all around the world employ more than 676,900 workers - 120,000 of those workers work in German plants each day. While Toyota cranks out an impressive number of vehicles out of it’s 14 manufacturing plants dotted all over the world, it makes those vehicles with a surprising small number of workers - 375,325 to capture the #2 rank in number of workers. If you think one of our U.S. auto makers has to be close...well, think again. #3 in the list of auto worker employers goes to Daimler AG and its 288,481 employees. I guess you could say a U.S. auto maker is #4 as Stellantis with it’s Fiat, Peugeot, Citreon, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, and RAM brands takes the #4 spot with it’s 272,370 workers. Since Stellantis corporate headquarters is located in Amsterdam, but the Dodge / Jeep / Chrysler brass continue to operate out of Michigan, it could be argued that Stellantis deserves some credit as being at least partially an American company. Honda takes the #5 sport with 218,674 workers. The #6 spot goes to the Chinese company SAIC Motors - China’s largest auto maker with 204,815 workers. And finally, a U.S. auto maker comes in at #7 - with Ford’s 186,000 employees. Renault’s 179,565 employees push it to #8 on the list of world auto makers. GM finally appears at #9 on the list with it’s 155,000 workers. The #10 spot on the list is almost a toss-up with Dongfeng Motor Corporation - a Chinese car company with 136,549 workers competing with Nissan’s 136,000 - with the #10 spot bouncing back and forth depending on who’s having a good sales season.

While Hyundai and Kia thefts captured all the headlines, stolen car statistics from Missouri and Illinois show that many thieves have their eyes on larger, more desirable vehicles - especially in Missouri. While 2023 stats are still being compiled, the number for 2022 are readily available, and the most stolen vehicles in Missouri might come as a surprise: Most stolen cars and trucks in 2022 Misssouri Illinois

Community goes to court to shut down home of Rennsport Reunion Neighboring land owners and environmental groups have gone to court to close the

legendary Laguna Seca race track. The landowners have joined forces with environmental groups and some local businessmen in a law suit claiming the track is violating a number of environmental and zoning laws. The scope of the legal claims is clearly focused on closing the 67 year old track. The law suit filed by the plaintiffs who call themselves the “Highway 68 Coalition” says the lifestyle disruption caused by the large track events goes far beyond anything that can be cured by financial settlements and nothing short of stricter controls or even complete shut down of the facility would be acceptable. The track already operates under some of the strictest noise and use limitations of any race track, but the complaint claims the track ignores the regulations and hosts events like the Rennsport Reunion that swamp the area with spectators and overwhelms the area roads, utilities and area businesses. Events like last Fall’s Rennsport Reunion which drew more than 80,000 Porsche fans do bring a lot of business to the area, but it also strains the area’s resources and lifestyle. For years, the track has been operating outside of some local regulations under ‘grandfather clauses’ because the track had been operating for years before the local area was developed and residents and business moved closer to the track. The lawsuit claims the track has seen a large increase in activity over the past decade and is now violating the 1985 land use permit which is currently governing the track. The plaintiffs say it is far beyond time to reopen and revise the way the track operates. The suit calls the track a “public nuisance” which is responsible for “irreparable damage that can not be compensated with monetary damages”. Currently, Laguna Seca operates under strict noise regulations, and is presently limited to holding events over more than 35 days every year. But the plaintiffs claim the size of those limited events has grown far beyond the ability of the community to absorb the traffic and congestion around the track. Porsche EV with 800 miles range??? While the new Macan EV unveiled by Porsche at the end of January reportedly will

deliver a range of around 300 miles before needing to be recharged, this is apparently just the beginning of Porsche’s EV performance. Several European automotive publications say that Porsche has several EV test mules running around Europe with a new solid-state battery capable of running more than 800 miles between charges. Along with extended range, the solid-state batteries also include technology that cuts recharging times down to a fraction of present EV recharge cycles. Porsche engineers are aiming to get recharging time up to 80% capacity down to the 15 - 20 minutes cycle. Battery recharging slows significantly as the battery approaches full charge to prevent overcharging. Testing has proven that the fastest, most efficient charging should stop at about 80% capacity. According to the EV engineers, one added benefit to solid-state battery technology is a significantly lower risk of battery fires. Porsche wants to roll a lot more test miles on the solid-state battery technology before putting it into EV Porsches in dealer showrooms. But it’s probably a pretty good bet that we might see the longer-range batteries in Porsche’s race testing within the next year. 27
