President’s Message

April 2024

Spring is here...we have several events planned this month with something for everyone.

First off, if you’ve signed up for the Porsche Parade in Birmingham, AL, registration for the Phase II portions (selection of banquets, tours and events you wish to participate in) will open on April 3rd at 11 am. The Parade is highly recommended for everyone, especially those who have not attended one before. It’s not too late to sign up.

We will have a Maintenance Tech session at JML Audio of St. Louis on the 7th where they will show us how easy it is to change the oil and flush the brakes on a 991 model 911, and how to replace the hatch strut on a Cayenne.

We will have three driving tours this month...one to Southern Illinois to witness the solar eclipse, which should be fun, a second one to Emmett’s Restaurant in Fayette, MO with the folks in the Columbia group, and a third one is going to The Terraces at French Village Winery. This is a new tour for us and owners Sara and Dean Robinson are eager to show us how special their winery is. They have made extensive changes to the facility and plan to make and bottle their own wine in the near future.

So gas up your Porsche and meet up with us at one of these events. You can register for these and other events through our calendar on STL.PCA.org or on MotorSportReg.com.

See you then,

CPG Spring Drive & Dine to Emmett’s Restaurant, Fayette, MO

10:30 am, Saturday, April 13th

Each year, the Columbia Porsche Group puts together a drive and dine trip from Columbia to Emmett’s restaurant in Fayette, Missouri. It has been a favorite event for several years, and for several reasons. First, we take a twisty route up to the restaurant to enjoy the weather (usually very sunny and Spring like) and our cars. Then, we get to enjoy each other’s company, and the fine food at the restaurant, in scenic and historic downtown Fayette, on the square.

This year’s event is a planned luncheon on Saturday, April 13th. We will depart Columbia from the Boone County Fire Protection Office parking lot, in the northwest corner of the intersection of I-70 and Stadium Blvd. North at 10:30 am, which given our twisty route, should get us to Fayette around 11:15 to 11:30 am. If you come a little early, say 30 minutes, we enjoy talking and planning the leads and trails for the trip, and we can accomplish our sign up/waiver sheets, driver’s meeting, etc. We always have some folks drive in for the event from out of town, and they are more than welcome. We do ask that you send an email to trip host Rob Fleming (robfleming1@juno.com), AND register with Motorsport Registration http://msreg.com/CPG-drive-to-Emmets , so we have a good headcount for the restaurant. We hope to see you and to renew old friendships and make new ones!

Will Baltimore bridge collapse affect Porsche imports?

The barrage of news reports of the accident that led to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore constantly repeat warnings about the effect the accident will have on the supply chain. How badly will the bridge collapse effect imports and exports into the U.S. supply chain? Time and time again, we hear comments about the car shipments that move through the port of Baltimore.

How will that effect the supply of Porsches flowing to American dealers? Luckily, the incident will have little or no effect of the Porsches coming into our dealers. Porsches coming into the U.S. come through 4 U.S. ports - Brunswick, Georgia...San Diego, California...Houston, Texas...and Providence, Rhode Island. Porsches destined for Canadian and some New England dealers typically get off the boats in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Baltimore does play a significant role in the movement of cars in and out of the U.S., but luckily not for Porsches. Baltimore actually ships more vehicles out of the U.S. than in. Toyota...GM...and Ford use the port of Baltimore to ship vehicles out to Europe and the Middle East. Honda sees a large number of vehicles roll both in and out of Baltimore. Baltimore also serves as the primary port of entry of Stellantis brands of vehicles.

The one automaker that might see the largest disruption in the flow of vehicles to U.S. dealers could be Mercedes. It’s estimated that as many as 40% of the Mercedes destined for U.S. dealers roll off the ship in Baltimore.

The disruption in the flow of freight in and out of the port of Baltimore will probably be significantly shorter than news reports tend to have us believe. The Corps of Engineers has called upon the Navy to begin moving huge floating salvage cranes to Baltimore from Norfolk, and several cranes are already near the bridge or will arrive within a day or two. The first goal will be to clear the main channel, and as soon as the central channel is clear, the port will be reopened. Unfortunately, it may be some time before the salvage operation is given the green light to begin in earnest. There will be a concerted effort to find the bodies of the missing construction workers before the crews will be given the go ahead to start yanking the twisted steel and concrete off the channel floor. Unfortunately, the channel is not that deep...the massive cargo vessels like the Dali which destroyed the bridge lie so low in the water when loaded that they barely clear the bottom of channel, so all the metal and concrete will have to come off the channel floor before the ships can resume their voyages. It’s not going to be fast, but hopefully not as long as many think.

Gathering to watch Formula 1

The Formula 1 race fans in our Region gathered at JML Audio of St. Louis to cheer on their favorite drivers and teams competing in the Saudi Arabia round of the 2024 Formula 1 season on March 9th. Josh and the staff at JML Audio with the help of The Sound Room set up a couple large screen tvs in the JML shop service bays to entertain our Region’s F1 fans. The race carried on through the lunch hour, and the hungry fans enjoyed sandwiches and food from Scotti’s Deli. Thanks to Josh and JML Audio for gathering the support of local businesses to make this viewing more enjoyable for our Regional race fans.

Porsche Werks Reunion and Amelia Island

Auto Show

Sue and Steve Sullivan

Sue and I drove to Amelia Island, Florida, for the Porsche Werks Reunion and the Hagerty-sponsored Amelia Concours Auto Show. It was held on the grounds of the Golf Club of Amelia Island and at the Ritz Carlton hotel on March 1-3.

We both volunteers to help in the Corral that day, which is Porsche-only parking. Not only because it’s fun to help, but it was a great opportunity to meet Porsche Club members from other regions. Also, you typically receive good volunteer swag! The Werks Reunion was spread over several fairways of the golf course. The Porsche Corral was filled almost immediately, and over 800 cars showed up. Sue was helping with check-in, and I was one of the many people helping everyone line up and park, by models, on the fairways.

The event officially started at 9 am, but by 10 am, the fairway of the par-5 hole was entirely filled. This was with the cars parked ten-across. We had rows and rows of 356s, early 911s, Macans and Cayennes, and newer 911s. There were Porsches as far as the eye could see.

The show area was filled with several historic models, and the theme of the show was the duck-tailed models. This was highlighted by several early ‘70s 911 Carreras, which were all gorgeous. Lots of Porsche-related vendors were there to offer many ways to enhance and enjoy our cars.

13

The next day we attended the Cars & Community show put on by Hagerty. There was quite a large display of over 350 cars of every type spread out over several fairways of the golf course. This was an “Invitation Only” auto show, and there were certainly all kinds of cars that were invited - American...European. ..Asian and others were represented.

There was even a “Barn Find” area with many rusty, non-restored cars that people supposedly found in their searches. Speaking for myself, I’ve yet to come across anyone who has an old 356 in their garage that they simply didn’t know what to do with.

There were quite a few Porsches on display. RUF had a huge display of their special 911s. They have a shop in Miami that can help you with any and all maintenance or performance enhancements. Another vendor I thought interesting was a shop in Tennessee that buys wrecked Mercedes AMGs, rescue the motors, and then shoe-horns them into older sedans. I can only imagine the performance sleeper he is creating out of them...must be impressive, if the frame can handle the extra horsepower! Quite an interesting business model...bringing vintage Mercedes back to life with a modern heartbeat. But he seems to be very busy meeting the customer demands he has.

The new Broad Arrow company was at the Ritz Carlton having an auction. We had a great time wandering through the staging tent and looking over all the cars going down the line. We had unusually good access to everything during the auction, which was a little surprising to me. In the past, I’ve gone to some of the Barrett-Jackson and Mecum auctions, and they were more restrictive about who they let into the auction areas, unless you paid the couple hundred dollar registration fee. We even walked into the auction while it was in progress, and I made sure not to raise my hand or make eye contact with anyone up on the stage.

There were cars that sold from around $30,000 all the way up to $4,000,000. Crazy money for some really nice cars!

One thing I notices was a large presence of several EV brands. Rivian had a huge display of their pickup and SUV models and were giving test drives to everyone that signed up. They had about a dozen models in the Ritz driveway that you could take out for a short test drive. Karma, Chrysler, Lucid, and several other manufacturers were showing off their latest offerings. The major players, Tesla, Mercedes Benz, or the other big automakers were not there though. Seemed like there were more ‘second-tier” manufacturers with their very futuristic sedans. No doubt they are very attractive to look at, and the build quality appeared to be first rate. However the asking prices for some of these cars are still pretty astronomical.

We did get to meet and talk to Wayne Carini again on Saturday. I say “again” because that guy seems to be everywhere. We saw him both on Saturday and Sunday, and last year at another auto show. We even saw him at a Vintage Motorcycle Festival at Barber Motorsports Park a while back. I’m sure he didn’t know us from Adam, but he is a genuinely nice person that will talk to anyone who says hello. He was sitting on a panel discussing how his Chasing Classic Cars program was on for 18 seasons, and they produced over 200 episodes. Even though he is getting tired of travelling, he is in discussions with the old Speed Channel to create yet another car program. So we will have to stand by for that development.

15

Sunday’s Concours show was a little more subdued with fewer cars covering the golf course. These cars were more of the Vintage-type that you expect to see at an event like this. The cars were simply amazing to look at, and talking with their owners was a lot of fun. Everyone was very proud of their cars and would talk at length about the history and experiences they had during restoration and ownership.

Unfortunately, close to lunch, it started to rain, which did not seem to slow the crown down. However, the car owners were scrambling to cover up the display cars with all kinds of plastic tarps and covers - which then made looking at the car impossible.

This was a great event, and we had lots of fun mingling with the many auto enthusiasts during the busy weekend of car shows and auctions. I would put it on your bucket list, if it isn’t there already.

911 Recall begins in April

Porsche will begin sending out recall notices to more than 8,000 owners of 2020-2024 911s on April 26th. The windshield and rear windows of the 911s in the recall may not have been properly installed and can become detached while driving or especially when the air bags deploy. If the window detaches as the airbag inflates, the bag might not properly support the occupant resulting in more injuries during crashes.

If you are concerned your car might be involved in the recall, contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243 and ask for information about recall ARA3.

911 Hybrid on the way this summer?

International auto journalists are buzzing about Porsche’s plans to reveal a 911 hybrid sometime this summer. Each Spring, Porsche invites bankers and investors to a meeting where top Porsche leaders report on the company’s success of the past year and reveal the company’s plans for the year ahead. At this year’s annual financial press conference, Porsche leaders dropped the bombshell that Stuttgart is planning to roll out a 911 hybrid addition to the 911 model line possibly as early as June or July.

Porsche Chairman Oliver Blume told the gathering that Porsche is moving forward with a plan that will see future products powered by one of three different power sources. Blume noted that there are presently 1.3 billion vehicles on the road powered by internal combustion engines. Many of those vehicles will live on to serve owners for the next 30 years, and those engines will need some type of fuel to burn. The push for a cleaner environment will require some type of cleaner fuel, and Porsche intends to be a leader in producing those fuels through its e-Fuel project with its other e-Fuel partners.

For drivers in cities and countries requiring zero-emissions EVs, Porsche will continue development of battery powered vehicles. In the next few years, the Porsche Taycan and Macan EV will be joined by electric versions of the Boxster and Cayman in the middle of this decade to be followed by an all-electric Cayenne. Porsche’s plans for the future call for about 80% of all Porsches to be fully electric by 2030.

But Porsche knows there will be some diehard Porsche fans who will always want some type of internal combustion engine to be powering their Porsche over the highways. While some will stick with ICE 911s fueled by Porsche’s e-Fuel, there will be some cities and nations pushing for a cleaner 911. In those areas, Porsche will have a hybrid 911 like the one planned to roll out this summer.

For years, Porsche has been gaining experience with hybrid technology in their race 911 hybrids and the highly successful 919 LMP which has been winning races for nearly 10 years. Porsche’s engineered learned a lot from the 919’s successes on race racks around the world. And those lessons are the foundation of the technology of the 911 hybrid we will see later this year.

According to the presentations to bankers and investors at this year’s annual financial conference, the hybrid 911 we will see later this year will be powered by a variation of 17

the 919 race car drive train that the engineers call a ‘t-hybrid’ system. With that system, electric motors powered by a small battery in the front power the car’s front wheels while a regular ICE drivetrain powers the rear wheels, making the car all-wheel drive. Early reports say the first generation of the 911 hybrid will come with a 63 kW electric motor connected to the front wheels drawing power from a small 2 kWh battery pack wired into the car’s 48-volt electrical system. The system will use power from a 3.0-liter twin turbo flat-six drivetrain in the rear of the car connected to a 295 kW engine/generator and from regenerative power from the braking system to keep the battery charged as the 911 hybrid rolls down the highway. The two electric systems will provide a combined 356 kW of juice to keep the battery charged and to drive the front electric motor.

According to presentations at the financial conference, it is very likely that as Porsche gains more experience with the 911 hybrid we will see the electric power output of the hybrid system increased to close to 400 kWs in future 911 hybrids which will eventually take the place of today’s Carrera S and Carrera GTS.

With the introduction of the extra power provided by the hybrid electrical systems, the presentation hinted that Porsche will slowly dial back the power output of its internal combustion drivetrains to put more of the emphasis on electric power than on liquid fuel power and to increase the economy of the ICE engines. If the presentation proves to be true, look for the 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine to become the workhorse of the Porsche model lineup. The 3-liter will reported become the primary power source for the Carrera, Carrera S and base 911 hybrid. The present 3.6-liter non-turbo flat-six will continue to be used in the GTS at least until the mid-2030s.

While Porsche has invested a lot of time and money into the development of the hybrid system, the hybrid powertrain is not the only change we can expect to see in the next generation 911 models. There will be the natural subtle styling changes on the exterior, but the biggest change will be the full-digital instrument cluster and improvements in dashboard layout.

It will be interesting to see if Porsche will be able to stick to its mid-summer roll out time line for the 911 hybrid. There is definitely more to come.

One less competitor to worry about...

For the last couple years, there has been one competitor that has been a major thorn in Porsche’s side in IMSA racing - Ganassi Racing. For the past decade, Chip Ganassi’s Ford factory backed Ford GTs have been a constant threat to Porsche’s GT racers. More recently, when Ford backed away from GT racing and cancelled the Ford GT race program, Ganassi switched to Cadillac GTP cars with GM’s backing. The Ganassi Cadillac GTP’s pushed the Porsche 963s until the very last laps of this year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona when a late pitstop knocked them out of contention. And about a month ago, Ganassi driver Sebastian Bourdais battled it out with the Wayne Taylor/ Andretti’s Acura ARX-06 for the lead at the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring while the Porsche Penske 963 had to settle for a 3rd place finish. Ganassi Racing definitely knew how to produce fast race cars.

But in a surprise move after the Sebring race, Ganassi made a quiet announcement that echoed through the race haulers as the teams loaded up cars and equipment to leave the track - the Ganassi Cadillac would not be back in 2025. Ganassi announced that the team would finish the 2024 season with the Cadillac GTP.R race car, but the team has no plans to continue with Cadillac after this season. No reason was given...Did Cadillac withdraw its support of Ganassi???...Did Ganassi choose to walk away from Cadillac??? No one is talking.

The announcement took Ganassi’s drivers including Sebastian Bourdais and Scott Dixon by surprise. They would have a job for the rest of this season, but next season is another question. Ganassi Racing has said that right now its plans call for it to sit out the 2025 race season with hopes of possibly returning to racing in 2026. The announcment simply doesn’t make sense. Ganassi and his team gave Cadillac its first podium finish at last year’s 24 Hours of LeMans in decades, and captured the IMSA Manufacturer’s Championship for GM in 2023.

There is some speculation that Ganassi looked across the garage and saw the money and support Porsche is pouring into the Porsche Penske 963, and Ganassi went to GM asking for more backing to remain competitive, and GM probably said ‘NO’. People who know Chip Ganassi say he is not the type to race just to be racing. If he can’t roll a winning car onto the track, he’ll just keep the car in the garage. It’s likely that GM is more focused on gettings its EV models in dealer showrooms and customer’s garages... not into pouring more money into winning checkered flags. And if that is the case, Chip Ganassi will likely focus on IndyCar and wait until someone with a fatter checkbook comes knocking on his door.

Display Your Pride in St. Louis Region

We now have St. Louis Region badges available to members. These 3 inch diameter cast metal badges display a hard enamel inlay of our Regional logo. These top quality badges will last a lifetime. Each grill badge costs $30 and can be purchased by contacting Steve Sullivan at ssullivan@stl.pca.org. They can also be ordered through our website store and through motorsportreg.com.

We have also received both stickers and static cling reproductions of our Regional logo. These full-color 2 inch stickers have an adhesive backing to stick to your vehicle, tool box or anything you wish to decorate with our PCA logo. We also offer 2 inch static cling reproductions of our logo. These logos are printed on clear vinyl like the PCA logo you receive from PCA National when you receive your PCA membership card. These stickers and clings will be given out at Regional events this summer. These items are available NOW. Show your pride of the St. Louis Region!
