Dear Friends, What a busy year 2022 has been so far for so many of us. Here at the St. Louis Children’s Hospital Foundation, we are thrilled to have hosted three in-person events — Blooms & Butterflies, Table Tops Spring Event and the 21st Annual Joe Buck Golf Classic. Not only did these amazing events offer the opportunity to spend time together, but we also raised vital funds for various programs including Wings pediatric hospice and palliative care, Child Health Outreach and Advocacy and the Joe Buck Imaging Center.

Also, you may have noticed this publication has a new name and an updated look! Our team has worked hard to reimagine the magazine to focus on the ways all of you impact the lives of the families we serve at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and the look and feel now aligns with some of the advertising, billboards and commercials seen around the St. Louis region and beyond. You will see we have kept some of the old sections and added a few new ones. With a new look and

better organization, the refreshed layout allows you to read more about the fantastic work — some of which is ONLY happening right here at St. Louis Children’s Hospital — that donors are supporting each and every day.

I am so excited for you to dive into this issue. It’s full of amazing stories and news about St. Louis Children’s and the impact donors make on our patients and their families. I want to take a moment to highlight our impact report on Pages 4–5, where you can see exactly how donor dollars were used in 2021. The numbers demonstrate the large impact you have helped make for our patients, research and the community.

We’re also sharing some big news regarding two donor gifts that will transform care in the years to come for behavioral health in children and no-cost mobile dental care in the St. Louis region.

Lastly, I want you to know how thankful we are for each of our donors. You are a constant reminder that our common goal is to do what’s right for kids. We have big plans in the works to expand the reach of our donor dollars, and I can’t wait to share more about that in the coming issues. Highlights & Happenings

Members of our community showed the love for patients this Valentine’s Day as they ensured every child spending the holiday at St. Louis Children’s received a valentine with a personalized message. The online campaign brightened the day for many as they opened cards complete with kind messages of courage and hope.

The number of canine comfort teams is growing, and five new dogs will be joining the Purina Paws for Hope program at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. To celebrate, they held parades at the St. Louis Children’s Child Development Centers. The graduates of Duo Dogs, the hospital’s dog training partner, will provide a familiar distraction during challenging times.

The Nook Gifts & Gatherings, a Ladue-based shop that sells apparel, home goods, unique gifts and Missouri-made crafts, presented St. Louis Children’s Hospital with a $24,482 check benefiting the Child Life Services Department. The nonprofit shop donates 100% of its profits to St. Louis Children’s each year.

St. Louis Children’s patient, 8-year-old Maya, recently donated 200 copies of her book, “Mighty Miss Maya,” to the hospital. The story features a fierce little girl who doesn’t let anything stand in her way as she and her dog face adventure and adversity. The books are being given out to St. Louis Children’s patients as a reminder of all they can accomplish.

St. Louis Blues defenseman Colton Parayko recently launched Project 55, a private foundation that focuses on bringing moments of joy to hospitalized children. In addition to Colton’s ongoing visits with St. Louis Children’s patients, Project 55 provides special game day experiences to patients and their families — helping them escape from the daily stressors associated with long-term medical care.

The Hermann Family is Committing to Improve Behavioral Health of Children New research center will serve as a platform to transform behavioral health starting with the family unit

St. Louis Children’s Hospital is tackling the issue of behavioral health support that has emerged as a leading health concern in our country — for people of all ages. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that one in five kids will experience a behavioral health problem during their school years. In St. Louis, that translates to an estimated 125,000 kids, and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic have revealed how few resources are available to help.

Behavioral health encompasses social, emotional, and mental health and the ability to cope with life’s challenges. Children today face stress, anxiety, bullying, family problems, depression, learning disabilities, and alcohol and substance abuse. Serious behavioral health problems, such as self-injurious behaviors and suicide, are on the rise, particularly among youth. Systemic race-based disparities in quality of life and healthcare have a profound negative impact on behavioral health for children and their families. More than 3,800 patients have been treated at St. Louis Children’s Hospital since January 2020. The annual volumes in both 2020 and 2021 were almost double prepandemic numbers.

A new $15 million gift from Bob and Signa Hermann will have a profound impact on patients and families, both in St. Louis and eventually beyond. The Hermann Center for Child and Family Development will be housed within the Children’s Discovery Institute, a partnership between St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine — the result of a shared vision to change the way pediatric research is conducted and an intense commitment to bring about dramatic improvements in pediatric care. The Hermann Center will blend world-class research with a revolutionary model for whole-family behavioral health care.

“There is a great need historically for a center of this magnitude here in St. Louis,” said Bob. “While the unveiling was accelerated due to the COVID-19 pandemic, pediatric behavioral health has been underfunded for some time.

Bob Hermann The Hermann Center will be the first of its kind to adopt a transgenerational approach to reducing the burden of serious behavioral health conditions of childhood, one that engages the whole family and that will track the results of care for a decade or more.

Learning outcomes have the potential to improve key aspects of how behavioral healthcare needs for children are identified and managed — from how parents interact with their new babies, to how medical professionals identify and address risk factors and genetic predispositions for behavioral health problems, to the way kids learn coping skills that they can carry with them for life.

Washington University physician-scientists in the school’s Division of Child Psychiatry, working alongside St. Louis Children’s Hospital, have led the world in understanding and preventing the earliest origins of behavioral health conditions of childhood. Innovations pioneered by this team will be implemented in the new model of care provided within the Hermann Center.

The Hermann family invites the community to join them in improving behavioral health for families throughout the St. Louis region and beyond through a match challenge. Partnership with Crawford Taylor Foundation will Increase Access to Free Dental Services for Kids Funds will expand the region’s only mobile health program at Missouri’s No. 1 children’s hospital

St. Louis Children’s Hospital is set to significantly expand the hospital’s Healthy Kids Express Dental program — the region’s only free, comprehensive and regularly scheduled mobile health service providing kids with access to dental care services in their own neighborhoods thanks to a generous grant from the Crawford Taylor Foundation.

The Crawford Taylor Foundation’s investment represents a shared commitment by two pillars of St. Louis’ community to reduce health disparities among children.

“The Crawford Taylor Foundation is an enduring example of what it means to champion a community,” said Trish Lollo, St. Louis Children’s Hospital President. “Healthy Kids Express Dental is part of our effort to improve the health and quality of life of kids beyond the walls of our hospital, and the Crawford Taylor Foundation’s generosity means life-changing care for kids with little or no access to it.”

The Crawford Taylor Foundation’s transformational gift will allow Healthy Kids Express Dental to serve 3,500–4,000 children each year — more than double its current number — around the St. Louis area. St. Louis Children’s currently operates one Healthy Kids Express Dental unit with a full-time dentist, two dental assistants and three dental exam chairs. The unit offers dental exams, cleanings, X-rays, restorative care and dental education.

Program expansion will include a second mobile dental office, a specialized vehicle outfitted for procedures requiring patient sedation and the recruitment of highly skilled professionals for both vehicles.

In 2020 and 2021, Health Kids Express Dental staff worked to continually adapt to evolving COVID-19 safety protocols. After suspending programs briefly, the team was able to safely resume services, seeing more than 2,000 patients and performing some 10,000 dental procedures in those pandemic years. Of kids

In 1997, a local St. Louis entrepreneur, Jack Taylor, started the Crawford Taylor Foundation with the vision to help make St. Louis a better region. Over the years, the Foundation has supported many organizations in the St. Louis area, mainly those that improve the community, address women and youth issues, animal welfare and the environment. Today, three generations of the Taylor Family make up the Board of Trustees. requiring additional dental care in 2020 and 2021, 80% completed their care within one year of initial diagnosis.

Since its inception in 2010, St. Louis Children’s Hospital’s Healthy Kids Express Dental program has aimed to reduce health disparities by providing critical dental health services to kids close to home — at schools, daycare centers, Head Start programs, community youth and family organization sites, etc.

Tooth decay is among the most common chronic childhood diseases. If left untreated, it can lead to inadequate nutrition, pain, infection, missed school, depression and low self-esteem. In Missouri, roughly 27% of school-aged children have untreated tooth decay. Children from low-income families are at greater risk overall, with roughly 70% of children with Medicaid not receiving dental services of any kind. Barriers to care include family medical literacy, financial limitations and lack of insurance.

One Detail Leads to a Life-Changing Diagnosis St. Louis Children’s Delivers World-Class Care 10

It was likely that Jack was born with the tumor that was discovered when he was just 15 months old. As a newborn, his mom says he was extremely unhappy. First-time parents Kellie and Rob were assured Jack was just colicky. He was their firstborn child, and his parents assumed it was normal and just hoped whatever was causing their son discomfort would resolve on its own.

Unfortunately, it lingered, and he got worse.

Over Memorial Day Weekend in 2013, Jack was ill, unable to keep any food or liquid in his stomach including small sips of water. They struggled to find a diagnosis, and after a few weeks, Jack was sent to St. Louis Children’s to see a gastroenterology (GI) specialist.

The doctor’s first impression was that he was suffering from extreme dehydration, and Jack was admitted for further observation and care. After a full day of GI testing, the family was still without a diagnosis. The next day, a medical student at the time sat down and said he didn’t want to send Jack home and asked the family to provide anything else that might help them determine what was wrong with their toddler. Kellie remembered both Jack’s grandmother and babysitter mentioning his stumbling while walking and shared that seemingly inconsequential information. It was like a lightbulb went off in the medical student’s head. Referring to the condition as a wobbly gait, the care team decided to send Jack for an MRI. After the procedure, a team of doctors came into Jack’s room and shared the findings were abnormal. Someone from neurosurgery would be in shortly.

That led to their first meeting with Washington University physician David D. Limbrick Jr., MD, PhD. He explained that Jack had a golf ball size mass lodged between his brain stem and cerebellum. The location was tricky — blocking the flow of spinal fluid causing Jack to develop hydrocephalus, which was fatal if left untreated. Within 24-48 hours, Jack needed to undergo brain surgery to remove the tumor.

Unfortunately, Jack’s first surgery didn’t go as planned. Dr. Limbrick’s team resolved the hydrocephalus but was unable to remove the tumor. After a few days of rest, a second surgery to remove most of the mass was

successful. But what they thought would be a two-week stay at St. Louis Children’s turned into three months. Jack developed meningitis and after multiple rounds of antibiotics, Dr. Limbrick decided to go back in and thoroughly clean where the tumor was removed. After that third surgery, things were finally turning around. Jack was attending sessions with St. Louis Children’s physical, occupational and speech therapists while recovering. But as Jack was weaned off the medication, his fever started to spike. They had hit yet another roadblock. Dr. Limbrick assured Kellie and Rob that their son was in the best place possible and that a fourth surgery to remove the hardware placed in Jack’s skull during the first two surgeries was the best option.

That August, Jack was finally cleared to go home, with the family knowing he would need radiation therapy as part of his treatment plan. His official diagnosis was grade 3 anaplastic ependymoma. For six weeks, Jack visited Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital five days a week to receive sedated radiation. The family was offered placement in a study using chemotherapy as a secondary treatment due to the small amount of the tumor that was left in Jack’s brain because of its tricky location. The family was hesitant.

They had seen loved ones go through chemotherapy and didn’t know if they could watch their son endure a similar course after he’d already been through so much. Initially the family decided not to enroll in the study, but after further discussion with Dr. Limbrick, who his parents say was a part of their family at that point, they changed their mind.

After six weeks of radiation, Jack underwent one round of chemotherapy each month from November to February — finishing right before his second birthday. The family could finally breathe. The treatments ended and the MRIs to ensure the tumor wasn’t returning began. Today Jack visits St. Louis Children’s to see a team of specialists that help with the late effects of cancer treatment along with his yearly scans.

Radiation and chemotherapy are known to cause long-term survivorship issues including hearing loss, weight gain and chronic fatigue.

Kellie and Rob credit St. Louis Children’s Hospital with saving their son’s life and are thankful for the donor-funded physicians and scientists at Washington University and St. Louis Children’s, who strive to reduce the number of families who share the same story as Jack and his family.

Heartfelt Care Leaves a Lasting Impression Making Plans Now Ensures a Bright Future

Kate and Ken Fox met while attending Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. After getting married and working in education after graduation, they moved to Kate’s hometown of St. Louis when their first son was born. They continued to grow their family to include two more children, and Ken worked as an educator until he eventually retired.

In the fall of 2004, the family received shocking news no parent ever wants to hear. Their oldest son, Gregg, was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

The tumor was successfully removed from his brain stem, and after five years of monitoring, Gregg was released from the hospital’s care. Even though their son was no longer a patient, the exemplary care offered at St. Louis Children’s Hospital left a lasting impression on the Foxes.

For the Foxes, a combination of retirement and a new chapter as empty-nesters led them to begin the values-based estate planning process — a service offered to St. Louis Children’s Hospital supporters that includes a confidential, comprehensive estate planning consultation at no charge and with no obligation. The process began with identifying what’s important to Ken and Kate through a questionnaire to gauge what values, dreams, goals, passions and people the Foxes consider important and how the couple wishes to be remembered. The plan will reflect those key issues.

Through a series of meetings with Michael Geis of Thompson & Associates, the Foxes captured their values and priorities, outlined their intentions and protected their assets on a roadmap that would allow them take care of their family while remembering the institutions they feel strongly should have their support.

Both Kate and Ken note their meetings with Michael were positive and productive. “Positive in the fact that we always left feeling good about our conversations with him,” said Ken. “Productive in the fact that we made good progress each meeting by understanding what we had accomplished and outlining the next steps.”

Kate and Ken agreed that the step-by-step planning was very helpful. “It never felt overwhelming, even though there were big decisions to make,” said Kate. They are very thankful for the opportunity St. Louis Children’s provided them as they planned for not only their future, but also the future of the hospital that provided them much-needed answers during a difficult time.

Offering the Best Care for Brain Tumor Patients Experienced Physician Duo Leads Program Gaining Global Recognition

Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital is home to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Center, which has the area’s largest multidisciplinary team of pediatric specialists — led by Washington University physician David D. Limbrick Jr., MD, PhD and Mohamed Abdelbaki, MD. Together they ensure that each child receives a customized treatment plan that includes the newest and most advanced treatment options.

Dr. Limbrick is the T.S. Park, MD Chair of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Washington University and Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

He understands why research is vital to offer safer treatment methods, the latest clinical trials and specialized plans customized to each patient’s needs. Dr. Limbrick’s research focuses on the development of novel imaging and biological markers to improve diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for perinatal brain injury and neonatal hydrocephalus. While at St. Louis Children’s, he has published more than 180 peer-reviewed articles and has led several federally funded clinical trials.

Dr. Abdelbaki came to St. Louis Children’s Hospital in August 2020 and, with Dr. Limbrick, currently serves as co-director of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Center and an associate professor of pediatrics at Washington University.

He currently leads the early-phase clinical trials for the neuro-oncology program at St. Louis Children’s and is the principal investigator for several pediatric brain tumor clinical trials. Dr. Abdelbaki has developed a global neuro-oncology program at St. Louis Children’s, through which he collaborates with several institutions around the world and has consulted brain tumor patients across the globe. He leads an international neurooncology tumor board every month that is attended by neuro-oncologists from more than 20 countries to discuss the care and treatment plans of brain tumor patients.

Perspective “We first met Dr. Limbrick just 30 minutes after being told our 15-month-old son had a potentially fatal brain tumor. As my husband and I sat in total shock, Dr. Limbrick walked into the room and brought an indescribable calm with him. He told us the plan, and we had no choice but to have faith in him.

Several life-threatening complications later, we found our faith had been well placed. He walked with us every step of the way. There were days it felt like we might not leave the hospital with our son, but Dr. Limbrick never wavered. With each setback, he was there to adjust the plan and reassure us that we could overcome it all. The level of trust he inspires is exceptional. Nine years after leaving the hospital — with our son — we’re still in awe of this incredible doctor. It’s difficult to put into words what Dr. Limbrick means to us, but Jack turned 10 this year and we believe that milestone wouldn’t have happened had it not been Dr. Limbrick who walked into Jack’s room that fateful day on the 8th floor of St. Louis Children’s Hospital.”

Our Kids Never Stop Learning Donor-Funded School Program Promotes Importance of Education

For long-term patients, schooling provides a sense of normalcy during an otherwise difficult time.

Using technology, patients can take the classroom wherever they want to learn, including outdoors in the hospital’s Olson Family Garden.

St. Louis Children’s Hospital is committed to taking care of the whole child. That includes keeping children learning and on track with their schoolwork while they are hospitalized.

Donor gifts support the teachers who provide important educational programming for children in a dedicated classroom inside the hospital or at the bedside when a child is not able to leave their room.

as well as parents and caregivers who are working toward their degrees. For every patient or sibling who accepts support, our teachers contact the school, speak with the counselor, teacher, principal, nurse and any other key individual and devise a plan for what best serves the child.

The classroom is a separate area from therapy and treatment rooms and contains books, computers and school supplies, and is colorfully decorated with patient artwork. The accredited School Program provides patients and families with a positive, organized way to maintain a sense of normalcy while receiving treatment and care. These services significantly impact a child’s ability to succeed educationally, despite interruptions due to their illnesses and treatments.

The program currently has three teachers and one educational liaison who provide educational programming to all school-aged inpatient children who are hospitalized for more than five days and qualifying outpatient children. They have also assisted siblings

When it’s time for children to leave St. Louis Children’s, teachers also act as a liaison with the child’s school to help with the transition back. The educational liaison supports students and caregivers in accessing and navigating online learning and education.

Because of generous support for educational programs, the School Program provides vital education to better care for the whole child and the whole family — with long-lasting benefits.

Generosity of Community Shines Through

Take Action

Digital Platform Promotes Personalized Fundraising Every year, individuals, families and groups of all ages want to support St. Louis Children’s mission to do what’s right for kids.

Through fundraising, they are providing care and assistance to kids and families who face challenges and uncertainties as they navigate illness or disease. Our online platform, Fundraise Your Way, allows donors to raise money and awareness using our website and tools — making it easier than ever.

Each personalized fundraising page can celebrate a birthday or another milestone, support an athletic event or even honor or remember someone special. There are six different types of pages to choose from and once the type of page is selected, it’s time to personalize the page with a story, photos, videos and event details.

Former patient Camden decided to give back to the hospital in honor of his 12th birthday. He was born 10 weeks premature and spent about six weeks in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at St. Louis Children’s. With the help of his mom, he created his own Fundraise Your Way page that shares his story and allows friends and family to easily make online donations directly to his cause. An avid soccer player, he is pledging donations based on the number of goals he scores this season.

In 2021, the Fundraise Your Way platform raised almost $52,000 for St. Louis Children’s thanks to dedicated donors who understand that pediatric care is complex.

It requires child-friendly facilities and services that meet the unique psychological and emotional needs of children and their families. Unfortunately, the things kids need aren’t always covered by insurance, but fundraisers help us provide these additional necessities.
