The mission of the St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center is to form the students, faculty and staff of the University of Kansas, and others who wish to join in this mission, in the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the Catholic intellectual, moral, liturgical and spiritual traditions.

LETTER from the

DIRECTOR Dear KU Catholic Jayhawks: Is it St. Joseph’s time? I can’t help but wonder as I consecrate myself to St. Joseph in this, his holy year. St. Joseph has never been on center stage! He says nothing in the Gospels, trusting in God’s will that the Father who sees in secret will repay those who work in silence. Should we place him through our devotion and piety at the forefront now, this Joseph who was so willing to exit unnoticed when his role was fulfilled. Should we highlight Joseph, who gave way so that Jesus could show us only His relationship to His heavenly Father? That’s the question for me! Would Jesus want us to feature his dad precisely at this time, to learn from Joseph as He did? The answer in my prayer is yes. This is Joseph’s time! When fatherhood is too easily labeled as a toxic vestige of the past, let’s put St. Joseph first, to help us value the gift and vocation of holy fatherhood. May Jesus’ father not compete with, but enhance every relationship of our lives, those above, beside and below! I hope you enjoy this issue of our KU Catholic dads taking a crack at fatherhood, and writing the greatest stories of this generation. Go to Joseph. Guardian of the Holy Family, pray for us who have recourse to thee!

Fr. Mitchel Zimmerman Murillo Saint Joseph and the Christ Child

O dearest St. Joseph, I consecrate myself to thy honor and give myself to thee, that thou mayest always be my father, my protector, and my guide in the way of salvation. Obtain for me a great purity of heart and a fervent love of the interior life. After thine example, may I do all my actions for the greater glory of God, in union with the Divine Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. And do thou, O Blessed St. Joseph, pray for me that I may share in the peace and joy of thy holy death. Amen.

St. Joseph

is described as a righteous, compassionate man, and of

course the legal father to Jesus. He protected his family and so willingly left everything he had and owned for the safety of his family when he was warned that they were in danger. His devotion to his family is a call for all men to be so devoted as such. We are to be the head of household - the spiritual leaders of the house - to guide our family and be willing to sacrifice for them.

You bet you find out real quick how much you will sacrifice for your family when you bring a new life into the world. Sleep. Comfort. Sometimes your sanity. But with as much as we are to give, it has been the most rewarding and worthwhile part of my life.

St. Joseph has inspired me to continually increase my knowledge of our faith, increase my time devoted to practicing our faith, and finally a reminder that we are to be righteous, humble, compassionate leaders of a holy family.

What a great blessing to be called to fatherhood.

ecstatic that the Pope and our Bishop declared 2020 the year of St. Joseph. As a man, St. Joseph is the perfect model for me to love my wife, teach my children, resist evil, work diligently and give my whole life to Jesus Christ and the Blessed Mother. - Charlie Sloan

January, which timed our final weeks of pregnancy during Advent, and all of the

events including Joseph in Scripture. At the time, I was unemployed, my wife’s job that we moved states for fell through, and here comes a BABY! Needless to say, there was plenty to be anxious about. Yet, in the readings each day, Joseph was

consistently experiencing intense moments with his family: being entrusted to care

for the anticipated Savior of your people while Mary’s pregnancy is misunderstood; struggling to find a place for birth, and eventually fleeing to Egypt for Jesus’ life; Joseph’s relationship with God in the midst of it all. Man, sit and ponder Joseph! - Gage Shirley

LAWRENCE? I consider the University of Kansas to be a special place, but being at KU without the St. Lawrence Center would make campus a desolate place for me. This place is not only one of community and friendship, but also of passion and purpose. WHERE DO YOUR DEEPEST COMMITMENTS LIE? My deepest commitment lies in my faith and relationship with Christ. As His Beloved Son, I have learned that my life is most complete and full when He is at the center. When I am pursuing Christ is when I am at my best, with my family, friends, other relationships, schoolwork and in leisure.
