he RiseUP Campaign was a historic achievement for St. Joseph’s Villa. Our success was achieved thanks to the tireless efforts of my fellow Campaign leaders and the more than 500 individuals, businesses, foundations, and community partners who believed in the Villa’s mission and vision, dedicated staff, and most of all, the children and families we serve. Thank you for stepping up and investing in the future of this historic organization and the work that really matters. Together, you helped raise more than $30 million, surpassing our $25 million goal.

These funds supported Villa programs for mental health, housing, and education; helped grow the Villa’s Endowment; and enabled capital improvements across campus.

Most notably, thanks to the Campaign, and despite an unprecedented year of pandemic, the total renovation of the Villa’s 1931 school into a one-of-a-kind center for autism and training is now complete.

This center stands ready to welcome not only our students

and faculty, but also researchers, teachers for training, community partners, and the world. We hope it will be more than just be a place for each student to reach their individual goals and milestones, but also a site for advancing the global dialogue on autism education.

None of this would have been possible without you. In this report, you will find some of the most inspiring moments and stories from the Campaign. I hope you enjoy reading them, and celebrating everyone who gave their time, encouragement, and support to make this effort an unprecedented success. BY A GROWING NEED

T

he Villa’s vision for a school to serve our students and the larger autism community inspired the RiseUP Campaign, and became the centerpiece of our capital efforts. For 50 years of its rich 187-year history, the Villa has served children with autism. Today, our Sarah Dooley Center for Autism is our fastest growing service, rising to meet one of our community’s fastest growing needs. The CDC reports that 1:54 children will be diagnosed with autism. Virginia is home to more than 22,000 of those children, and education is the most powerful tool available to help them unlock their full potential.

We believe that every child and family should have access to life-changing educational intervention, and every dedicated educator should have access to effective training and resources. Through the transformation of our historic school building into a state-of-the-art center, our goal is to not only offer the best education to our students, but to build a community resource that will provide professional training and serve as a replicable model for public schools across the region and the world, creating a ripple effect that will touch thousands of lives.

A VISION TO PRESERVE OUR CAMPUS AND GROW OUR IMPACT Founded in 1834 as a refuge for vulnerable children, the Villa remains committed to helping children and families learn, grow, and heal. Preserving our history, improving our facilities, and creating a foundation for the future through the RiseUP Campaign takes our capacity for service and innovation to new heights.

Center for Autism and Training The vision for the renovation of the Villa’s historic, 1931 school building into a state-of-the-art Center for Autism was driven by our desire to design a school that would provide a top-flight education for our students, and change lives beyond our campus.

The new school is designed to serve as a training hub for teachers and professionals, offer a platform for research, and be an accessible model that can be replicated by public schools to serve their growing population of students with autism.

Our new Sarah Dooley Center will provide year-round education

to over 100 students from 30 localities across Central Virginia.

Our unique program offers a highly individualized experience for each student and family, and works to build strong communication skills and positive behaviors in a therapeutic learning environment.

Our curriculum emphasizes community-based instruction to grow flexibility, resilience, and life skills, as well as increase our students’ quality of life and opportunities in the future. By combining clinical excellence with the “real life” experience of a public school, our students demonstrate the progress and outcomes of an elite clinic in an accessible environment.

Capital Upgrades The Villa’s 82-acre campus is one of our greatest tools for delivering our programs. Beautiful architecture, expansive green space, and therapeutic gardens offer our children and families a safe and positive environment to learn, grow, and heal. The RiseUP Campaign allowed us to expand accessibility, make critical repairs, replace technology, upgrade heating and cooling for energy efficiency, and create a new Youth Fitness Park.

Program and Services Everyone can succeed with the right tools and support. With 19 integrated programs, the Villa is uniquely positioned to take a collaborative approach to serving the whole child and their family.

Funds raised through the RiseUP Campaign allowed us to expand our educational, mental health, and housing and homeless services including: increased programming for homeless prevention and

diversion; expanded services for homeless youth and elderly populations; new mobile crisis services for youth in mental health crisis; a new adult day support program to serve students with developmental disabilities who age out of schoolbased programs; and an expanded grocery program to provide food and necessities to our students and their families.

Endowment For nearly two centuries, the Villa has adapted to changing needs in the community, and our Endowment has helped sustain our mission and growth. The RiseUP Campaign was our first effort that included a formal Endowment Division, and offered our supporters the opportunity to create a legacy at the Villa. 15 donors stepped up to commit more than $1.7 million that will benefit children and families in our community for generations to come.

What would you do with a million dollars?

For the first time in its 187-year history, the Villa got to answer this question thanks to distinguished philanthropist and community leader, Mr. E. Claiborne Robins, Jr. In 2019, as part to the RiseUP Campaign, Claiborne and his wife, Mary Ellen, made a $1 million commitment – the first in the Villa’s history. This transformational gift not only catalyzed the momentum of the Campaign and allowed the Villa to break ground sooner than anticipated (a significant cost savings), but it also inspired other donors to stretch.

As Villa CEO, Kathleen Burke Barrett said “This was not just a historic million-dollar gift, it was the gift that made the community see the Villa as a million-dollar organization, and that changed everything.”

More than just financial support, Claiborne Robins offered seasoned campaign advice to Villa staff and RiseUP Campaign leaders, even coming to campus to offer a “pep talk” at the outset of the effort. As he celebrated 50 years of being a philanthropist, he challenged Villa Board members to “Get out there and send this campaign beyond any expectations” emphasizing the importance of recruiting the best leaders, having passion for the organization, and putting heart – and a lot of work – into a campaign to make it successful. The best advice from someone who has never failed at a capital campaign: You need to be out there asking in order to be successful.

This advice energized donors, volunteer leaders, and staff alike. Shortly after announcing his historic commitment, a second donor, citing Claiborne and Mary Ellen’s gift as inspiration, increased their own gift to $1 million.

Proving another of Claiborne’s words of wisdom: “People like to be associated with success!”

Not to be outdone, in 2020, the Robins’ made a second commitment – a challenge gift to help complete the Campaign, bringing their investment in the project to $1.5 million and helping spur a wave of new donors to the Villa and raise over $750,000 in additional funds. All in all, the Campaign not only surpassed its $25 million goal, but also attracted 162 new donors who supported the building project.

So, what’s the answer to the million-dollar question?

Barrett says “It was our job to make the most out of this transformational gift. We used the money to build a state-ofart center for autism and training unlike any in the country, but we also used Mr. Robins’ support and advice to create momentum, energize volunteers, and inspire others to support the Villa at new levels. Thanks to this extraordinary gift, we got it done!”

Classrooms also feature unique teacher work spaces, accessible restrooms, and each room connects with a partner classroom, making it easy for faculty and staff to assist one another, and share resources.

YO U T H F I T N E S S PA R K The new Youth Fitness Park is a dedicated outdoor space on the north end of our historic campus designed specifically for our older students ages 1018. The Park provides dynamic therapeutic outlets and uses physical activity and play to help mitigate maladaptive behaviors, and promotes critical coping skills, self-control, conflict resolution, and resilience; while also sparking communication, socialization and problem-solving.

The Fitness Park provides a wide variety of structured and free play activities; and includes a basketball court, a shade structure for yoga or dance, a misting station for hot days, and accessible exercise stations for youth of all abilities.

Our aim is to be at the forefront of combining classroom-based education with the benefits of outdoor education, experiential learning, and recreation for all ages and abilities. The new Fitness Park, combined with our accessible playground and Learning and Therapy Garden, further activates the Villa’s unique 82-acre campus as a powerful therapeutic tool to fulfill our mission and help our students learn, grow, and heal.

Occam’s Razor Laura and Caribou Honig believe that the best way to solve a problem is to take a razor to it. The razor in this case being Occam’s Razor, which, for us nonphilosophers, can be distilled to the idea that the simplest solution is usually the right one.

When it comes to philanthropy, St. Joseph’s Villa is a very simple solution to issues important to the Honigs.

“We don’t know anything about autism education, or rehousing the homeless,” says Caribou, “but we know about St. Joseph’s Villa. We know that the staff at the Villa are experts in these areas, and we trust that they put our donations to work in the most effective way.”

It’s a trust earned over time.

The Honig’s relationship with the Villa began over 20 years ago, when Caribou took part in a Capital One volunteer day. At some point along the day he had a chance conversation with a young man receiving services from the Villa about the young man’s desire to start a business. The conversation stuck with Caribou afterwards.

“This was a place not just helping people at a point in time, but setting them up to succeed afterwards.”

The Honigs also saw the important ways that the Villa provides those structural solutions that Laura mentioned earlier. Caribou points to the fact that in addition to working with students with autism, the Villa also trains teachers to do the same, radiating impact to thousands more students across the state.

The result? The Honigs have grown into major donors over the past 15 years, and they trust that the Villa is going to put those funds to work in the most useful way.

All of which brings us back to Occam’s Razor. “We want to help solve a problem,” says Caribou. “We have resources, and the Villa is solving problems that are important to us. They are doing us a favor by making it so easy for us to be a part of the solution.”

What could be simpler?

“We felt like this was structural work,” says Laura, “and the impact didn’t stop at the gates.” This idea resonated with the Honigs.

Some time passed, but that impression stuck, and when the Honig’s decided to begin supporting some local causes, they remembered the Villa. “We had an intuitive sense that these were good people doing good work,” says Laura.

They started modestly. Intuition is fine for small gifts, but relationships need room to grow, and the Villa revealed something important over time.

“Over the years, management has changed, staff has changed, but the work has kept focus,” says Caribou.

“The Villa knows its mission and is disciplined around that mission no matter what.”

Laura got to see much of the work close up, becoming an active volunteer at the Villa’s Flagler Housing & Homeless Services, and this increased the Honig’s confidence that the Villa’s work has a deep impact.

Icing on the Cake The questions came nearly every day when Teresa Harrold attended school at St. Joseph’s Villa. Maybe it was the grounds crew calling out as she walked, “Hey, Teresa! What’s baking today?” Or someone in the homeless services division: “What time is the treat cart coming, Teresa?”

Every one of these questions was actually an affirmation. An affirmation of Teresa’s skills as a baker. An affirmation of Teresa’s respected place at the Villa. An affirmation that, after years of being marginalized as a student with autism, Teresa had found her place.

Her parents, Judy and Bill, had tried the public school system, then private specialty schools, but Judy says, “day to day it never felt like she was respected or heard.” The family was losing hope.

Teresa was entering 12th grade when the Harrolds found the Villa, and from the outset it was different.

“The cart boosted her self-esteem,” says Judy. “She had always been criticized for being too slow to catch on, yet here were all these people excited to see her.

They were celebrating her gifts for a change.”

Teresa spent one happy year at the Villa, and since graduating in 2017, has been employed at Carytown Cupcakes. The family’s heart, though, remains at the Villa, which is why Bill and Judy have become such faithful supporters.

Which brings us to the most important component of the Harrolds’ giving: hope. For the Harrolds, giving back to the Villa means helping other families believe in a hopeful future for their children, just like Teresa received. That kind of hope is contagious. Judy sells items online, with all proceeds benefitting the Villa. If people don’t know about the Villa, Judy happily tells them about it and, “they often get so excited they give me more than my asking price!”

Some might call that the icing on the cake.

Judy & Bill Harrold “They got to know Teresa before she ever set foot on campus,” says Bill. “Baking is her passion. Kathryn Williams, the Villa’s Culinary Job Coach, designed a pastry skills program that would prepare Teresa to turn her passion into a career.”

But it was more than that.

“The effort and ingenuity they put into wrapping not just the vocational skills but the academic and emotional supports was just amazing,” says Judy.

Bill likens it to framing a house, and before long Teresa made that house her home. “She blossomed more in one year than she had in eleven previous years of schooling.”

And all those people calling out to Teresa? They were big fans of Teresa. And of the baked goods cart she operated several days a week, sharing her sweet creations with staff all across the Villa campus.

All in the Family St. Joseph’s Villa has many treasures: the beautiful grounds, the stately buildings. But the true heart of the Villa is our dedicated staff. They never stop believing in children, in families, or in one another. So, when the opportunity arose for staff to participate in the RiseUP Campaign, they banded together to contribute over $250,000.

They dubbed their effort the Villa Family Campaign, and when you talk to three of the staff members who led the effort, it’s apparent that the word “family” is well chosen.

Charles “Doc” Dockery loves the Villa so much he’s worked here not once, but twice! First in the emergency shelter, and then after a career with the Department of Juvenile Justice, he felt called to return because “I always felt like family at the Villa.” Doc now works part time training new employees and “Welcoming them to the family.”

Family is once again at the center of Roxanne Priest’s description of the Villa. “I’ve been in education over 25 years,” says the Director of Recreation Services.

“What’s special about the Villa is that we are a big family and we get to impact so many lives.”

They all agree that volunteering to head up the Villa Family Campaign was easy.

Roxanne’s first impression about RiseUP’s $25 million goal was, “Wow that is a very big goal. Astronomical.

But then I thought about the mission, about what happens here every day, and I got very excited.”

Doc introduced the Villa Family Campaign to new employees, making sure they were aware of the opportunity to participate and describing it as, “just one of many ways families support one another.”

After greeting new employees at the door, so to speak, Doc credits Quadon and Roxanne with canvassing the existing staff. “They did the lion’s share of that work,” says Doc, even though Quadon and Roxanne make it sound like the easiest work they’ve ever done.

“I just told my own story,” says Quadon.

Roxanne says, “You can see every day where the money goes. To families who don’t know where their next meal is coming from.”

“And to the kids who find a place they never had before at the Sarah Dooley Center for Autism,” adds Quadon.

Doc, Quadon, Roxanne Quadon McCullough, Director of Program Operations at the Sarah Dooley Center for Autism, agrees. The Villa is “one big family,” according to Quadon, who adds that “the Villa has supported me, both as an employee and as a person. I’ve been able to

Passing the Torch Dr. Lillie Bennett and her son, Dr. Richard Bennett, are more than doctors. They are healers. The distinction is illustrated in a memory Dr. Richard shares from his youth, about his mother counseling a pregnant teen to stay in school.

He wonders if his mother even recalls that moment.

For her, it was one of countless interactions, but he was struck by its resonance. Far more than just doctorto-patient. Dr. Lillie was seeing the whole person. At that moment, “I realized that doctoring goes beyond dispensing medicine,” recalls Dr. Richard.

“She is my hero,” he says of Dr. Lillie, and, inspired by his hero, he followed in his mother’s footsteps and became a community doctor as well.

Like medicine, St. Joseph’s Villa is a legacy that Dr. Lillie has passed down to Dr. Richard. She recalls being introduced to the Villa’s Flagler Home (now Flagler Housing and Homeless Services) in the 1990s, when it provided long-term housing to unwed mothers.

“I fell in love with it,” says Dr. Lillie. She served on the Flagler Board for fourteen years, and when Richard became a community doctor, “I thought he might want to become involved, as well.”

As Flagler’s mission evolved to meet the community’s changing needs, the Bennetts’ service to the Villa evolved too. They appreciated the Villa’s service to those on society’s margins, but what they truly admired was the Villa’s dedication to seeing and serving the whole person.

Doctors know it’s essential to meet immediate needs, but healing calls for a more holistic approach. Dr. Lillie says, “The Villa keeps people out of harm, but it’s more than just a safe haven. It equips them to provide for themselves.”

Dr. Richard served as a member of the Villa’s Board of Trustees from 2011-2019, and one of the profound things he learned, which inspired his personal philanthropy to the RiseUP Campaign, is just how much this holistic approach means. “People didn’t think the goal was achievable,” he says, “but the success demonstrated the community’s support for the work, as well as the need for new programming.”

He goes on to cite specifically the Sarah Dooley Center for Autism’s new building, and the expanded services the new facility will allow. “This is all part of a message to these children: You are valuable, and you have value.”

If you listen closely, it’s the same message Dr. Richard witnessed his mother delivering to that pregnant teen all those years ago. Another legacy handed on from mother to son, and so it’s not surprising that mother and son also share a common philosophy when asked about their legacy at the Villa.

“If we’re impacting lives, that’s great, but it’s not about us,” says Dr. Richard. “We all live on borrowed time and resources, so the choice is how to use them.”

And with that he turns to his mother. He wants his hero to have the last word.

Dr. Lillie looks at her son. “I was blessed to share whatever talents I have,” she says quietly. “It was an honor and a privilege, and I am so glad I could do it.”

Strength in Numbers Take it from Randy Reynolds: when Sarge Reynolds, has an idea, it’s easy to say yes—especially when it involves St. Joseph’s Villa.

impact its success will have on the mission. It fit well with both foundations, and that’s where the idea of a family gift started.”

Sarge has been involved with the Villa for over 20 years. He’s served on the Villa’s Board of Trustees, and currently sits on the Villa’s Foundation Board. When the Villa kicked off the RiseUP Campaign in 2015, Sarge did two things. First, he volunteered to co-chair the Campaign’s Leadership Giving Division. Second, he went to Randy with a bold idea.

Randy, along with other Trustees of the Richard S. Reynolds Foundation, came to tour the Villa and learn more about the Campaign’s priorities. “I was impressed with the Sarah Dooley Center for Autism,” Randy remembers. “I saw the challenges of working with some of the students, and what an extraordinary job the teachers did.”

Sarge is President of the Virginia Sargeant Reynolds Foundation, and Randy, Sarge’s first cousin once removed, is a Trustee of the Richard S. Reynolds Foundation. Although both charitable foundations are a part of the broad Reynolds family legacy, they are independent entities, each with a separate mission and different giving priorities.

Everything aligned between the two foundations and RiseUP’s goals for the Villa, so the decision for a combined gift was, as Randy says, “an easy one,” and with a smile, he adds that there was one other key factor. “How can you say no to Sarge?”

Sarge’s idea: what if the two foundations combined to make a Reynolds family gift to the Villa’s RiseUP Campaign? It was an idea grounded in Sarge’s personal history with the Villa, and aligned with the missions of each foundation.

Much like the clients who access Villa services to transform their lives, the Richard S. Reynolds Foundation was founded to honor Mr. Reynolds’s practice of turning crisis into opportunity.

The Reynolds family gift brought the Campaign to over 75% of its $25 million goal, and Sarge announced this exciting milestone to Villa friends and Campaign supporters at the Villa’s Construction Kickoff Celebration in June 2019. “To commemorate and celebrate the impact of this gift,” says Jenny Friar, the Villa’s Chief Advancement Officer, “we are proud to honor the Reynolds Family in the new Center for Autism. Each day when our students come through the front doors, they will be entering the new Reynolds Family Hall.”

“The needs that the Villa serves, especially around students with autism, seem to increase every year,” says Sarge. “And the way the Villa not only educates its own students, but promotes the education of students with autism across Central Virginia through its teacher training programs, is more necessary than ever.”

Virginia Sargent Reynolds & Richard S. Reynolds Foundations dedication to education and human services fits perfectly with the mission of the Virginia Sargeant Reynolds Foundation.

“The Campaign was compelling,” explains Sarge. “The purpose was clear, and you could see the passion that the Villa staff have for the

Randy and Sarge both agree that while they are proud their respective foundations have been a part of the RiseUP Campaign, they are just one part of a greater partnership. “We are fortunate as a family to be able to support the Villa,” says Randy. Sarge concurs, adding, “it’s organizations like the Villa, and the teachers and staff doing this work every day, who should be thanked. It takes everybody playing their roles to bring it all together.”

As Randy might say, that’s an idea to which it’s easy to say yes.

A Foundation of Excellence Like other organizations of excellence, the Markel Corporation doesn’t just articulate its core values; it lives its core values. These core values are articulated in The Markel Style — a set of principles lived every day by Markel’s 18,000+ employees, and focused on empowering people to reach their personal potential while supporting employees’ commitments to their communities.

Mary Allen Waller, Markel’s Global Director of Community Engagement, says that Markel’s decision to make a corporate gift to St. Joseph’s Villa’s RiseUP Campaign was made primarily because Markel’s employees saw important elements of the Markel Style reflected in the Villa’s work. “Markel’s belief in enabling individual potential is exactly what the Villa does. It is dedicated to enabling every person it serves to be the best they can be,” says Mary Allen.

In addition, the Markel philanthropic philosophy prioritizes strengthening communities, and “the Villa’s outreach to our most vulnerable neighbors is critical” says Mary Allen.

“Without the resources it provides, there would be a much greater tragedy in our community.”

The two organizations’ shared philosophies are one reason Markel has supported the Villa for nearly 25 years through corporate grants and employee matching gifts. There is also another powerful thread that weaves among the two organizations: a passion for children with autism.

“More resources need to be dedicated to children with autism,” says Mary Allen, “and the Villa’s Sarah Dooley Center for Autism is an incredible resource.”

Mary Allen goes on to note that former Markel CEO, Alan Kirshner, founded the Faison Center, which also supports children and young adults with autism, “so there is a natural link to our philanthropic legacy.”

All of these factors came into play when the Villa submitted a proposal to Markel to support the RiseUP Campaign. Mary Allen acts as an advocate for nonprofits in the process, but decision-making power lies in the hands of the employee Grant Review Committee.

The committee demonstrated great confidence in the Villa by not only approving the gift but making it unrestricted, meaning the Villa could use the funds wherever they were most needed.

Markel Corporation Mary Allen says, “At the end of the day, Markel supports the Villa for everything it does. The RiseUP opportunity was just a bonus.”

Still, when she describes a recent tour of the new Sarah Dooley Center for Autism, she describes being struck by its power to impact children with autism. It’s a feeling that begins the moment one steps through the front door into a welcoming space. It’s a feeling that intensifies through light-filled classrooms, the cozy sensory library, and flexible auditorium space. The feeling, Mary Allen says, is created in “the profound benefits to students, but also in the ripple effects to their families, who find so much relief knowing that their child is being well cared for.”

It’s the feeling generated when a place and its people both embody the most important core value of all: hope.

Since its founding in 1834 as an orphanage for girls, the Villa has always been about building family, and the past 18 months of a global pandemic have underscored for so many of us the importance of family and the ways that communities can, and must, come together to help one another. Perhaps never in modern memory has our interconnectedness felt so real and significant, but the truth is, it has always been essential to our common humanity, wellbeing, and success.

At the outset of the Campaign, I asked everyone to join us in taking a stand for their neighbors who needed help the most. Thank you for standing up with us as we embark on a new chapter of the Villa’s rich history. I invite all of you to come see the extraordinary school that you helped to build.
