DEAR FRIENDS When St. Joseph’s Villa was founded in 1834, our mission was to serve the most vulnerable and marginalized children of Richmond. We are able to continue expanding on that mission in this challenging time thanks to the many heroes who surround us, at the ready to embrace and lift up our families. Powered by our compassionate staff and you, our generous donors and volunteers, we are inspired every day to ensure the talents and abilities of the people we serve never go unrecognized, or underestimated. Since the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Villa has remained committed to creatively and safely meeting the varied needs of our children and families. Our Crisis Stabilization Unit continued providing a safe space for youth experiencing mental health crisis, as we launched new telehealth services to stay connected with families at home. Dooley School and Sarah Dooley Center for Autism teachers pivoted to deliver real-time, personalized instruction in virtual classrooms and held dozens of live webinars to support parents. For students who depend on the Villa for meals during school, our Career and Transition Services team mobilized the Villa Grocery food pantry, and have made weekly contact-free food deliveries from Kilmarnock to Louisa County with the help of local food banks and community donors. Many families have felt the far-reaching economic impacts of COVID-19, enduring lay-offs and reduced work hours, or leaving jobs to care for children. When Governor Northam launched the Rent Mortgage and Relief Program (RMRP) for Virginia, our Flagler Housing & Homeless Services team was asked to assist households facing eviction or foreclosure as a regional funds provider for the Tri-Cities area. Flagler swiftly restructured to accommodate the increased need, and to date has assisted 221 households through RMRP – in addition to managing the program’s existing rapid re-housing caseload for youth, families and seniors. While we all grapple with the pandemic, we are also witnessing a nationwide call for racial justice. As educators and human services professionals, our goal is to model equity in all facets of our work. The Villa is made of a diverse team serving diverse members of our community. It is our promise to always promote kindness, understanding, and inclusion in service to our community, so that our children may emerge as the leaders and heroes of tomorrow. Thank you for your continued support of St. Joseph’s Villa. Sincerely,
Richard P. Wintsch Kathleen Burke Barrett Chair, Board of Trustees Chief Executive Officer

It made sense to invest in the future of St. Joseph’s Villa through my estate, to give back to the children and families who have challenges that the Villa will help them overcome. My wish is for them to gain their independence, and ultimately thrive. In doing so, they will have the opportunity to support someone on their journey. –Kathleen C. Duke, Archway Society Member
The Archway Society is a distinctive recognition for those who have made estate provisions for the benefit of St. Joseph’s Villa. We give thanks to our forward-thinking donors whose philanthropy has, and will continue to benefit the children and families we serve in generations to come. 10

Staff and students eagerly reunited for in-person education and therapy in September. The Villa’s rigorous safety and mitigation plan has made the transition back to campus possible.
I didn’t know where I would be in the next year or so when I first came to the Villa. I thought I might go back to an institutional facility, or be locked up again. Now I’m a stronger person. They were there for me and had my back when I needed it. –Jacob, Dooley School graduate
