SJA Annual Report

2019-2020

Dear Bloodhound Families and Friends,

As we navigate our 155th school year and I reflect upon the 2019-2020 school year here at Saint Joseph Academy, I am reminded of the simple blessings that we took for granted that we now get to enjoy—being able to have in-person learning, engage in competitive athletics, gather as a (socially distanced) community, and celebrate the great mission of Saint Joseph Academy. The past 11 months have been a challenge for everyone in our community, the St. Joe family continues to be a blessing. As we all watched the challenges and uncertainties of the past year unfold around us, the foundation of who we are as a Church and school family became clear—when tough times come, we band together and support each other. While 2020 was unlike any other year, what also was unprecedented was the response of our students, faculty/staff, parents, and community to this challenge for which no one could have predicted or prepared. I am so proud of our students, who didn’t miss a beat in the transition to remote learning. They continued to trust the journey they were on, even though they had no idea where it was taking them. They missed so many high school traditions that we have taken for granted over the years, but they understood that this situation was much bigger than them and were always willing to give their best effort. We learned more about our teachers during that time than any classroom observation or evaluation could ever tell us. Their dedication to our students and willingness to “think outside the box” was unequalled. Whether it was teaching a lesson via Zoom, or coordinating a plan to deliver materials to students, they answered every challenge. What a gift it is to work with them! Perhaps the greatest gift we received was the outpouring of support from our parents, alumni, and friends of Saint Joseph Academy. Every time we made a request, there was an overwhelming response, whether it was a call for time, talent, treasure, or prayers. Your unwavering support continued the proud tradition that is St. Joe despite a global health pandemic. This annual report might give the financial facts and figures of 2019-2020, but it will never tell the complete story. Numbers on a page can’t show the dedication and emotion that went into this school year. This report is a snapshot, but there is so much more to this story, and we are so very thankful that you were a part of it.

Saint Joseph Academy is proud and blessed to have forged relationships with two, three, and going on four generations of Bloodhound families. Our relationships with alumni and stakeholders have undoubtedly put us in a position to succeed in the future. In preparation for the 2020-2021 school year, SJA renovated nine classrooms on the main campus Improvements to classrooms included floor repairs, repainting, and in some cases a complete gutting with brand new walls and ceilings. Both technology labs received significant upgrades to its interior, infrastructure, and equipment including updated computers and a new 3D printer In addition, another phase of the school’s roof replacement project was completed with the area above the girl’s restroom, girl’s locker room, and technology lab being replaced. The school looks forward to completing the remaining phases of the roof replacement project in the coming years. We would like to take this time to say “thank you” to our hosts/hostesses of our regional campaign receptions which have occurred since the beginning of the Our Tradition, Our Future Campaign. You opened your homes to the Campaign team and your fellow alumni allowing us the opportunity to share the tremendous progress of this monumental campaign. We sincerely thank you for this opportunity. Alumni Association The SJA Alumni Association completed its second year that was filled with activity and alumni gatherings. The year was kicked off in August with a Casino Night which served as a membership drive and fundraiser to raise money for the SJA Alumni Scholarship Fund. Alumni in attendance spanned the generations and had a great time sharing memories of their days at SJA! Members of the SJA Alumni Council, and SJA Administration traveled to San Antonio, Austin, Dallas and New York City to visit with alumni. On October 18th the SJA Alumni Association hosted the annual Homecoming Tailgate and this year there were record breaking numbers of attendees. The class of ’69, ’79, ’82, ’89, ’94, ’99 and ’09 celebrated their respective reunions. All attendees gathered and shared stories of their favorite memories of their days at St. Joe. During the half-time of the football game, each generation took a walking lap around the track on Canales Field as the crowd in the stands welcomed them home once again. In December, the Association cohosted a Tamalada with the Campus Ministries team in observation of the Feast of the Guadalupe where all SJA community members were invited to attend and celebrate.

The SJA Athletic Booster Club had another busy and successful year supporting the athletes and raising funds in support of SJA athletics. In addition to running concessions at all home games and publishing the SJA Athletic Program Book, the Athletic Booster Club once again hosted their annual fundraiser, Taste of the Town. This event has become one of the most anticipated events of the year. Over 500 members of the SJA community attended and enjoyed a variety of cuisine from local restaurants and bakeries. Many guests went home a lucky winner with one or more unique gifts donated by local businesses for the raffle. Each year, a member of the St. Joe community who has served and supported SJA athletics is awarded the Ring of Honor title and this year’s recipient, Mrs. Connie Cano de Rodriguez is a shining tribute to this award. Connie has served as a member of the SJA Athletic Booster Club for over 15 years providing support through her work with the Booster Club. Connie and her husband Luis Carlos Rodriguez generously renovated the Bloodhound Fieldhouse in honor of their late son, Carlos Emilio “Chiquito” Rodriguez who passed away in 2009. Congratulations to Connie Rodriguez for her years of service to the SJA Athletic Booster Club and Saint Joseph Academy. The SJA Booster Club would like to thank the following for their sponsorships:

STYLE SHOW

Saint Joseph Academy has held it’s annual Style Show for 64th consecutive years, but sadly due to COVID-19, this year’s event was canceled. Although the students had been practicing for weeks and the Style Show committee had been hard at work for months, the show was canceled due to the orders of the Cameron County officials. It was a very sad day when that news was shared with the student body of St. Joe. By the time the show had been canceled, tickets to attend the event, and costumes for the students had already been purchased. As this is the largest revenue generating fundraiser at Saint Joseph Academy, the committee and Office of Academy Advancement set out to contact each family who made a purchase towards the event and was asked to consider donating their purchase to the school. By the time these contacts were made, COVID-19 had taken a hard-financial toll on many St. Joe families so donating was not an option. However, many families were able to donate either a portion of their donation or the entire expense back to St. Joe in the name of their child(ren). It was overwhelming to receive such support from our families and students.

Thank you to the following students and their families for their donations in support of the annual SJA Style Show
