Cover Story leading the way Twenty years ago this past July two local businesstechnology people, Art Stanley and Wally O’Neill, had an idea—to start a business focused on helping small businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador understand and use technology to their advantage.

N

ow fast forward to today. Triware, a small business that started with three people, has grown to 40 employees. While still focusing on technology solutions, Triware has grown its solution offering, keeping pace with the technology businesses work with.

While providing support and guidance for hundreds of clients Triware has also become an active community partner in Newfoundland and Labrador. One thing realized in that time is while business and technology changes have happened quickly over the last two decades, the next 20 years will move even faster. As technology grows, so does the reliance on it by a business as part of their critical processes. So how does small business, or for that matter a business of any size, manage technology; or more importantly, manage technology change and growth?

First, always think about technology in terms of how it can help your business.

While there is probably going to be some cost, either financial or other, many technology projects end cost neutral, with real definable benefits to the business.

Utilize cloud computing to improve access and reduce infrastructure costs, implement collaboration solutions to better connect employees to valuable information, or combine your voice and data needs into one system to maximize integration benefits. These are just a few examples of the technology-benefit relationship Triware has seen with their clients.

Second, realize that you cannot possibly understand it all. There’s too much data, too much information … and basically too much technology. A wise use of any

relationship you have with a technology partner is to improve the way technology works for you, and allow you to focus on what you do best – your business.

Choose partners who are experienced, knowledgeable, reliable, and understand your business goals.

Third, don’t forget that technology is really about investing in your people and your business. The technology decisions you make are for your employees, and in turn your clients.

eople thronged to theatres for a reach-out-and-touch-it, popcorn experience with Captain America, Transformers, Thor and The Smurfs.

Whether the movie was a major blockbuster, like the latest Harry Potter installment, or a big bust, like the latest Pirates of the Caribbean outing, Hollywood banked on 3D to bring in the big bucks this summer.

When 3D movies first launched in the 1950s, they were an innovation; a forward-thinking, futuristic venture that captured the minds of audiences.

In the 1980s, when they had a resurgence in popularity, 3D movies always went out of their way to distract the audience with giant objects barreling toward them – a visual treat, but one that never added to the story.

protect personal information Here’s a bit of a surprise: small businesses – and not big corporations – are increasingly becoming the prime targets for thieves wanting to steal files or hack into computer systems.

F

or small business owners, protecting your company’s business records and your customers’ personal information is just as important as having a great product and providing brilliant customer service.

In fact, in Canada The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) mandates that all businesses, healthcare facilities and financial institutions protect the confidential information of their clientele.

Too often, small business owners assume they won’t be a target for a data breach because they don’t have a huge database of clients compared to larger companies.

But small businesses are a perfect target because they often don’t have hightech alarm systems, advanced firewalls, spyware protection or information security policies to protect employee and customer information.

From names, telephone numbers and email addresses to credit card and bank account numbers and social insurance numbers, small businesses collect mounds of personal data. With the growing number of identity theft cases impacting consumers each year, small businesses must take the extra precautions to protect their customers’ information.

Developing an information security policy is the first and most important step small business owners can take to protect their business information and prevent damaging data breaches. This policy sets out how information should be handled, secured and discarded when it’s no longer needed. This doesn’t have to be an onerous task. The best place to start is at the website of the Office of the Privacy

Commissioner of Canada, which has a great online tool to help small business owners assess their needs and easily develop a policy (http://www.priv.gc.ca/ index_e.cfm).

The other general rule of thumb is: businesses should collect only information that is truly necessary from customers or clients. For example, don’t ask for customers’ mailing addresses and phone numbers if only their email addresses are necessary to send out an online newsletter.

If a business doesn’t collect it, the owner isn’t obligated to protect it and securely store it.

Business owners must protect their computers or laptop with firewalls and virus scanning software. Keep these up to date with regular upgrades. Use passwords on all of your digital equipment – computers, BlackBerrys or iPhones and iPads. Make sure these passwords are a minimum of eight letters and numbers with at least one capital letter. Be sure to change passwords every 90 days.

Use cable locks on laptops and employ screensavers with passwords to prevent prying eyes. Don’t leave your BlackBerry or iPhone unattended. Make sure your wireless network has the proper security protocols in place and don’t share the password with non-company personnel.

Assume that using a public Wi-Fi hotspot isn’t secure unless you are using a VPN (virtual private network). Don’t download files or open email attachments that you are not expecting.

Safeguards should also be put in place for information that isn’t stored electronically.

Files should be kept in locked cabinets when not in use. Keys or codes to lockboxes must be kept secure. Don’t leave files, laptops, or keys unattended in a vehicle.

When a business no longer needs the information it’s collected, do not toss files into the trash or recycling bin where they can become a bonanza for criminals intent on identity theft.

service provider. Choose your provider wisely and make sure they are NAID ‘AAA’ Certified, as this ensures they follow an internationally recognized set of policies and procedures.

Whether you are a two-person shop that serves local customers or a larger e-commerce operation with customers all over the world, small business owners have a legal and ethical responsibility to protect their customers’ information. Failure to do so can result in bad publicity, poor word of mouth, lost business and even legal action.

I

became an Ambassador for the St. John’s Board of Trade in January 2010.

In my line of work, as in most, it is very important to establish a presence in the local business community. The Board of Trade provides endless opportunities to attend networking events with decisionmakers and influential people in the business community.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience as an ambassador – contributing ideas, organizing behind the scenes, and attending many fun and interesting events.

This role has enabled me to meet other Ambassadors, engage with Board of Trade staff and mingle with other Board of Trade members.

event set-up and attend the Summit. I met many vendors and assisted them in their booth set up. These interactions help me to establish a presence in the local business community and meet folks I haven’t yet crossed paths with. My role as ambassador with the St. John’s Board of Trade has increased my profile in the business community and enabled me to build relationships that will last a lifetime!

Feature the real thing A small business owner’s story

G

rowing up in a large, closeknit family in the picturesque community of Torbay, Brenda O’Reilly knew she wanted to be a chef/ restaurateur.

And she got her start by helping out in the school cafeteria prior to launching her own catering business all before the age of 20.

In the intervening years she has opened several diverse foodrelated businesses – including the lynchpin, O’Reilly’s Irish Newfoundland Pub. O’Reilly has always maintained a strict authenticity around her menus, her staff, and her brand.

“It’s really important to me to stay focused on business – I love what I do and I always want to do better,” says Brenda. “In the restaurant industry, you’re always hosting people – and I think Newfoundlanders do that better than anyone else. It all feels so natural to me … it’s definitely my element!”

As both a local entrepreneur and a national spokesperson for the restaurant industry (O’Reilly is a past chair [2010] of the Canadian Restaurant and Food Services Association), Brenda O’Reilly has her own rules for thriving in a tough business – one that, as she points out, is entirely dependent on disposable income.

She always thinks in terms of five-year plans – “because that allows you to set goals and it gives you time to re-jig if you need to” – and she cites the 2008 recession as an example.

“You need to be able to react to things that aren’t within your control – in the end, because we decided to really focus on our bottom line, 2008-2009 was our best year ever, even though our sales declined slightly.”

The ability to learn from mistakes is another key factor in O’Reilly’s success.

“I have an MBA from the school of hard knocks,” she laughs (actually she holds a diploma in food administration from the Cabot Institute of Applied Arts & Tech-

nology, now CONA). “I have opened and closed a number of businesses over the years – and one of the key things I’ve learned is that you need to learn from your mistakes, sometimes you need to accept defeat, as long as you keep the big picture in mind.”

That strategy of always looking ahead and anticipating the next bump in the road has allowed O’Reilly to take advantage of opportunities others might not have noticed.

It’s hard to believe now, but 15 years ago there were no Irish bars on George Street – until O’Reilly’s. And six years ago, the corner of George and Water Street was home to a derelict building, not the lovingly restored Yellowbelly Brewery that Brenda co-owns with her husband Craig Flynn. Kind of makes you wonder what’s in the cards for the next half decade.

“If you’re creating something new, people are going to follow you,” says this multitasker extraordinaire, who attributes much of her success to attitude. “You have to keep a positive attitude in business or you’ll drown.”

Film fest planning for success

Board of Trade members are invited to a coffee reception with renowned author and ADHD coach Nancy Ratey.

Ratey is in St. John’s for Mental Illness Awareness Week and the launch of Rare Birds, a workplace mental health education and advocacy organization under the umbrella of the Canadian Mental Health Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ratey will be available to answer questions about mental health issues in the workplace at the Oct. 4 reception at the Parks Canada Pavilion on Signal Hill between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The St. John’s International Film Festival will roll out the red carpet this month.

The 22nd annual running of the festival will include showings of local and international films made by women.

The festival runs from Oct. 18 to 22 in St. John’s and will include a number of forums, workshops and showings.

The province announced $60,000 in funding for the festival earlier this summer to help expand .

Jumping Bean expands

Jumping Bean Coffee Company, in conjunction with its partner The Compass Group of Companies, has expanded the café presence of the local coffee roaster and coffee shop.

ClearRisk was named a finalist along with four other global companies from the more than 25 submissions to the Hubspot Inbound Marketing Success Story of the Year competition. In the end the local company won the most votes for their story and takes home the award.

Molson-Coors turns 225

The Molson Coors Brewing Company is celebrating a big birthday this year.

This year the beer company, which is also a member of the St. John’s Board of Trade, is turning 225.

Andrew Molson, chair of the Molson Coors Brewing Company’s board of directors, and his brother Geoff, who serves as chair and general partner are touring Canada to mark the anniversary starting in Montreal and visiting Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Moncton, N.B. and St. John’s, Nfld.

Their activities include meetings with local business leaders and employees, as well as media interviews and community events at which the Molsons will announce donations to local charities. Molson was founded in 1786 and merged with Colorado-based Coors Brewing Company in 2005.

Government spends to help women run business

The province has announced funding of more than $300,000 to help women-owned businesses grow. The funding will help the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE) to train women entrepreneurs to connect and do business with growth industries including oil and gas and mining. The Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Developmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s suite of business development programs is available to support private sector businesses as they develop new products, services or technologies. These programs support the transformation of innovative ideas into new commercial products.

Commercialization Program

Global Travel Program

To support the development and implementation of cutting-edge industry solutions, funding is available for activities that lead to the development of innovative, market-ready products and services. This program is designed to bridge the funding and investment gap between product research and market introduction.

For small and medium-sized enterprises, not-for-profit organizations and public sector institutions, funding is available to encourage incoming and outgoing trade and business initiatives by helping clients promote their capabilities, products and services to the international marketplace.

Technology Utilization Program

The program enables businesses to demonstrate and showcase their early stage, innovative products, services, and technologies within a public sector setting. Each project will take the form of a demonstration in a public sector environment.

The program assists businesses with increasing their technology capacity to improve business process, product quality, efficiency and competitiveness. This program also enables businesses to utilize technology to become energy efficient and reduce emissions.
