Brother Ralph Clifford, O.S.F. ‘48, longtime Treasurer of St. Francis Prep, passed away 15 years ago and left an amazing legacy of sound fiscal management that the school literally “banks on” today. In his honor, the Prep established The Brother Ralph Clifford Society which recognizes those alumni, parents and friends who “remember” the school in their estate plans and other planned giving directives. See more on page 18.

St. Francis Preparatory School A Message from the School President Dear Graduates and Friends of St. Francis Prep, Our 2016-17 fiscal year (ending August 31st) was an extremely busy one for all of us here at Prep, with more events and activities than ever before (including our second Red & Blue Ring of Honor Gala), and it reminded me that the PARTICIPATION of our alumni (along with our parents and so many good friends) remains at the heart of all we do to provide the resources that help our students succeed.

Your continued involvement and support enable us to offer outstanding academic and extracurricular programs for more than 2500 wonderful young men and women from all walks of life. You should know that, once again, every senior graduated last June and nearly every one (99.1 % of a class of 633 seniors) is currently attending college — including many of the most prestigious schools in the country. As a group, they were offered more than $158 million in merit-based college scholarships (separate from any financial aid packages)!

As I continue my travels across the country visiting with alumni in my role as president, this remains my primary message: “Please know that your participation in our important work pays huge dividends, as evidenced by the tremendous accomplishments of our students AND the beautiful new and updated facilities that are a reflection of these accomplishments.”

Our Capital Improvement and Modernization Program will continue in 2018, funded to a large extent by The Campaign for St. Francis Prep: The Next 150, with our state-of-the-art Music Facilities taking “center stage” these days, soon to be followed by new student/athletic locker rooms.

You will recall that earlier work resulted in our beautiful Science labs, fabulous Physical Fitness

and Art Education Centers, and a completely upgraded infrastructure.

I continue to tell you these things because it remains very important for you to know that your generous contributions, gifts and pledges are always put to very good use for the benefit of our students. As I have said many times previously, we could never accomplish all the things we do nor could we provide so many resources for our young men and women without your continued generosity. You allow us to maintain moderate tuition levels, fund special projects and programs, and offer financial assistance and scholarships to deserving students who otherwise may not be able to afford a St. Francis Prep education.

Once again, within the pages of this report you will find the complete listing of all 2016-17 fiscal year contributions (thru August 31st), with donors recognized alphabetically within each giving category and by graduating class. You will also see information about our named scholarship fund program, opportunities for planned giving, plus the upcoming event calendar.

I am forever grateful for everything you do in support of St. Francis Prep. I hope to see you either at the school (you are always welcome), at one of our many events, or as I travel to meet with our loyal alumni around the country. Remembering the Prep...

Establishing a Legacy Prep has been able to do great things for two reasons. First, we enjoy the outstanding support of many loyal alumni, parents and friends. Secondly, Prep has adhered to a fiscal discipline that was instituted by Brother Ralph Clifford during his 35 years as Treasurer and Brother Leonard has continued.

Brother Ralph served as the Treasurer until his untimely passing in Autumn 2002.

The Prep honored his memory in several ways. The Prep’s auditorium was named in Bro. Ralph’s memory and a special “giving society” was established in his name for alumni, parents and friends who include St. Francis Prep in their estate plans.

Members of this giving society are invited each year to the President’s Dinner and will be afforded permanent recognition as members of The Brother Ralph Clifford Society. All estate gifts are unrestricted unless otherwise designated by the donor.

As part of our Capital Campaign, Prep’s President, Brother Leonard Conway has received enthusiastic and generous support from many alumni with gifts at the leadership level. “Some Prep alumni tell me that they’d love to make a larger donation, but they currently don’t have the flexibility in their budgets to do so,” Brother Leonard Conway said. “Whether they are paying for college, planning for retirement, paying off the mortgage, or all of these, its understandable.” However, there are ways for Terrier Alumni to make the personal choice to give more than their current means allow through planned giving.

What is a Planned Gift?

A planned gift is a “future gift” that is made through your estate and can help ensure that Prep is able to meet the opportunities and challenges presented to us in the future. “One of the biggest misconceptions about a planned gift is that you have to be wealthy,” Brother Leonard said. “There are several donors who left Prep more than $200,000 and they weren’t by any means considered rich,” Brother Leonard explained.

Planned gifts can be a part of your legacy.

A planned gift is a way of honoring the memories and/or the relationships you cherish from your years at Prep.

Establishing a Legacy A planned gift has the potential to provide a meaningful gift to St. Francis Prep along with membership in the School’s Bro. Ralph Clifford, O.S.F. Planned Giving Society, which honors all those who have made a bequest or other planned gift in support of the Prep.

There are a variety of rewarding planned-giving options:

Real Estate

Life Insurance

A bequest is a transfer of cash, securities, or other property through a will or a living or revocable trust.

Your bequest can be a gift of a specific dollar amount, a specific piece of property, a percentage of an estate, or all or part of the residual of an estate. You can also name St. Francis Prep as a contingent beneficiary if someone named in your will is no longer living at the time of your passing. A bequest or trust distribution is easy to arrange, revocable, and does not affect your assets or cash flow during your lifetime. It will also reduce the value of your estate for federal estatetax purposes, and is exempt from state inheritance taxes.

Your gift of residential or commercial real estate can provide significant tax benefits as well as remove the burden of having to sell your property.

With a retained life estate, your personal residence is deeded to St. Francis Prep, but you and your family retain the right to occupy the home for life and will continue to pay real estate taxes, maintenance fees and insurance on the property. You are entitled to an immediate tax deduction for a portion of the appraised value, and the property is removed from your estate for tax purposes. You also determine who retains the right to occupy the property before it is gifted to St. Francis Prep.

Naming St. Francis Prep as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy is an excellent way to make a major gift. If you are carrying more life insurance coverage than your obligations require, consider naming the Prep the irrevocable owner and beneficiary of your surplus policy. The gift of a paid-up policy produces a charitable deduction in the amount of the policy’s cash-surrender value or basis, with no additional cost to you.

You may also designate St. Francis Prep as a revocable beneficiary, or transfer ownership of the policy to SFP. With a transfer, you can immediately deduct the current value of the policy from your income taxes, and if you are still paying premiums, you can deduct the cost of those premiums each year.

The following are a few benefits of Planned Gifts: • Provide lifetime income for you and, if you wish, another beneficiary • Give you substantial federal income-tax charitable deduction • Enable you to turn low-yielding assets into higher income stream • Reduce or eliminate taxes on capital gains • Eliminate or reduce federal estate taxes Choosing the right planned gift depends on your personal circumstances and financial goals. Please consult your tax professional and/or financial advisor for help in determining the best charitable gift for your situation.

Bank Accounts

You can name St. Francis Prep as the beneficiary on your bank account, U.S. savings bonds, or U.S. Treasury securities. Your bank can set up a “Totten Trust,” (also referred to as a “Payable on Death” account), which is an informal arrangement that keeps you in control of your assets during your lifetime. Your accounts do not enter probate and your assets automatically pass to St. Francis Prep.

Retirement Plans

You can name St. Francis Prep as the beneficiary of your 401(k), IRA, Keogh, or other retirement plan in order to help us continue our Franciscan mission. This gift will also reduce the tax burden on your heirs, as a distribution to us will not incur the doubletaxation that would otherwise befall them.

A Charitable Remainder Trust This form of support transfers

assets to a trustee, who then manages the trust and pays an income back to the donor for life or for a specific time period. When the trust terminates, the remainder passes to St. Francis Prep.

Unit Trusts

A Unit Trust has a fixed percentage rate of return on the initial principal value.

Benefits include an income tax deduction, the avoidance of capital gains tax (when appreciated securities are used), as well as an estate tax reduction.

St. Francis Prep requires a minimum gift of $25,000 to establish this.

Charitable Gift Annuity

This gift allows the donor to receive benefits for his/her lifetime and to qualify for a charitable tax deduction. This form of support is attractive when one has highly appreciated assets. St. Francis Prep requires a minimum gift of $100,000 to establish this.

Establishing a Legacy

These are three of the documented planned gifts and bequests-by-will received by the Prep recently that will benefit the school today and in the years to come:

The recently retired CEO of one of the Prep’s major vendors used his substantial payout to establish a Charitable Remainder Trust with a ten-year term (and significant tax advantages). During this term he will receive annual income from the trust at a fixed rate (which may or may not diminish the principal sum of the trust in any given year — depending on investment returns). At the end of the ten-year term it has been calculated that there will be approximately $3 million “remaining” in the trust, and this amount will then be equally divided between three charities — including St. Francis Prep. (Estimated amount: $1 million — to be used by the Prep as needed).

Please note: A Charitable Remainder Trust is a wonderful planned giving vehicle for donors who may have a five-figure amount (or more) available to set aside for this purpose, wish to receive ongoing annual income from the trust, and desire the significant tax benefits derived from such an arrangement.

A graduate from the Class of 1954 who passed away in February 2016 remembered the Prep in his will as follows: “I also make the following bequests… to St. Francis Preparatory School, located at 6100 Francis Lewis Blvd., Fresh Meadows, New York 11365, Federal Tax-Exempt Identification Number: 11-1635104, Group Exemption Number: 0928, subject to any encumbrances, the sum of One Hundred Thousand Dollars ($100,000) to be used to fund scholarships at the school…This bequest is intended to be a specific bequest.”

“…St. Francis Preparatory School hereby acknowledges that it has received from Pamela A. Dale, as Executor of the Estate of (Prep graduate from the Class of 1963 who passed away in October 2013), Five Hundred ($500) Dollars in full payment of the legacy bequeathed to it under the Last Will and Testament of (Prep graduate from the Class of 1963)…”

Please note: As part of one’s estate planning, a bequest-by-will that benefits the Prep is very easy to arrange (regardless of the amount — even $500 is acceptable as demonstrated above) and we hope that all loyal Terriers will think about this as a real possibility as they plan for the future.

Top 10 Classes with the Highest Percentage of Participation St. Francis Prep places great value on participation at all levels of giving. Your participation is vital to our ability to continue our Franciscan mission and to obtain grants. Schools that achieve high percentages in alumni giving participation, in general, receive more funding opportunities than those with lower participation levels. Why? Because evidence of strong alumni support is an indication of a school’s success in fulfilling its mission and, helps it qualify it for outside support.

THE PATHWAY TO SAINT FRANCIS The Pathway to St. Francis is an ongoing project which affords alumni and friends of Prep the chance to memorialize friends, family and loved ones by purchasing paving stones and other memorials that will remain on permanent display in front of the school. Our heartfelt thanks goes to all those who had the foresight to start these scholarship funds and to those whose generosity continues this wonderful legacy. St. Francis Prep welcomes the establishment of named, permanently endowed scholarship funds in memory or in honor of the named individual(s) or named family by providing an initial contribution of at least $10,000 and a long-term commitment to provide $100,000 or more. These funds may be established by generous individuals, families, graduating classes (e.g. the Class of 1999 Fund), athletic teams (by sport or year), club members (by club or year), etc. We hope to add many more scholarship funds in the years ahead (and help many more students) through outright gifts made by generous graduates and friends, through bequests-by-will, and through other planned-giving methods.

For example: If you purchased stock many years ago for $1,000, and it is now worth $10,000, an outright gift of that stock to St. Francis Prep would result in a charitable deduction of $10,000.
