• SFP Girls Basketball Coach JV: 25 years Varsity: 15 years • B/Q Girls CHSAA Hall of Fame, 1993 • SFP Ring of Honor Inductee, 2017 • SFP Honorary Alumnus, 2010 • Parent of six SFP Alumni: Brian ‘94, Maureen ‘96, Timothy ‘99, Kevin ‘01, Patrick ‘06 and Daniel ‘10 JoAnn Wagner’s story began more than four decades ago at 6100 Francis Lewis Boulevard as a student athlete on at Bishop Reilly High School. She was a three-year varsity basketball player and then went on to Misericordia University in Pennsylvania. When Prep took over Bishop Reilly, the late Jane Modry invited her to coach the SFP Woman’s Junior Varsity Basketball team. Together, they built up the SFP Woman’s Basketball program into what it is today.

The women’s basketball program at Prep began with a six to eight game schedule and no playoffs. (It is now a 20+ game schedule.) Along with Ms. Modry and other coaches, JoAnn played a major role in the formation of what is now the Girls Catholic High School Athletic Association (GCHSAA) Basketball League, serving as the Junior Varsity chairperson.

For the first 25 years of her coaching career, JoAnn enthusiastically served as the Prep’s Junior Varsity coach. It was here she was able to impart some important life lessons to the many budding young athletes. “I truly enjoyed it because we were truly teaching—not just about the x’s and o’s—but about sportsmanship, respect and teamwork.” As coach of JV Basketball her teams brought home two City Championships and she was named Coach of the Year three times.

In 2004, JoAnn became the Varsity Basketball Head Coach and Director of Girls Basketball at the Prep. At the varsity level, she was both “teacher” and “student” as she discovered at the advanced stages of an athlete’s

development there were different challenges and life lessons to be taught and learned. “The greatest joy a coach can have is watching their young athletes grow into mature young women who are ready to take on the next challenge in life,” JoAnn said. She concluded by saying, “Everyone involved a student athlete’s life is important—their family, their teammates, their teachers, their guidance counselors. And for me, to have contributed to some small part in their growth and success as a coach has been and truly is a privilege and great honor.”

Honors, Awards and Achievements JoAnn was inducted into the Brooklyn/Queens Girls Catholic High School Hall of Fame in 1993. In 2010, St. Francis Prep bestowed upon her the title of “Honorary Alumnus.” And the Bayside Historical Society named her “Woman of the Year.”

JoAnn also serves on the Board of Directors at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Academy.

JoAnn and her husband, Ron, are the proud parents of six wonderful children—five boys and one girl— all of whom are Prep Alumni! (Brian ‘94, Maureen ‘96, Timothy ‘99, Kevin ‘01, Patrick ‘06, & Daniel ‘10.) They are also the proud grandparents of 13 grandchildren— some of whom attend summer camp at St. Francis Prep.

Very few people on the faculty can say that not only were their children a part of their journey at Prep, but their parents were too. JoAnn’s dad, Phil Brady, has been a coach/moderator for the SFP Tennis Program for over 25 years. And he along with his lovely wife Joan, were named Honorary Alumni in 2014.

The Wagner children practically grew up at Prep because their mom was a summer camp coach. “I was blessed in many ways because when it was time to choose a high school, they all wanted to go to St. Francis Prep, and Prep provided them a solid foundation that has inspired them to be successful not merely in their careers, but most importantly as loving friends, spouses and parents.”

Prep student athletes have benefited from JoAnn’s wisdom and dedication over many years. As JoAnn herself says, “I am still here, still enjoying, and still hopefully impacting SFP women’s basketball players.”

JoAnn is a true Franciscan! We owe her a tremendous debt of gratitude!

Wally Bishop ‘80

• SFP Alumni Board President • SFP Hall of Fame, 2010 • Founding Member of The SFP Golf Classic • Executive Committee Member of The Campaign for St. Francis Prep Wally Bishop was born on January 3, 1962, the second of three children of Mary and Walter Bishop. His father, an SFP Honorary Alumnus, was a structural engineer who was very much involved in the building of Bishop Reilly High School (now St. Francis Prep) in the early 1960’s. Wally and his sisters, Mary and Bridget (SFP Class of 1982), were raised in Woodside and attended St. Sebastian’s where he was taught by former SFP Assistant Principal, Ted Jahn, and coached in baseball by Bill Ashton, SFP Class of 1976. (Wally is very much involved at St. Sebastian’s even today.)

Wally went on to St. Francis Prep in the Fall of 1976. He was a four-year member of the Track & Field and Cross Country teams. He also served as a Retreat Leader and Eucharistic Minister; was a member of the Irish Club; participated in Intramurals, and was a member of the National Honor Society.

on to earn his MBA in Finance from St. John’s University and has built a very successful career in the financial services sector.

Wally has been with Deutsche Bank since 1997 and has held several roles during that time within Regional Management. He is currently Managing Director and COO for DB’s US Bank - Deutsche Bank Trust Company Americas and Chairman of Deutsche Bank Trust Company Delaware. He is also responsible for Governance of the CCAR program. Prior to joining Deutsche Bank, Wally was a Director with Barclays US Bank, serving as its Chief Administrative Officer. Before that he was the Chief Financial Officer and Deputy General Manager for Nordbanken US. Lastly, he was with KPMG Peat Marwick as an Audit Manager in their Financial Services Audit Practice.

He holds the following professional licenses: Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Upon graduation from the Prep in 1980, Wally went Financial Analyst (CFA) and Project Management on to study at Baruch College where he earned his Professional (PMP).

Wally has served on St. Francis Prep’s Alumni Board since1991, serving as President since 2004, and he has helped usher in some of the most important and innovative alumni outreach programs and activities that have ever been seen among high schools in the tri-state area—including the SFP Annual Golf Classic Event which has raised over $3 million since its inception 25 years ago.

Wally, Lisa and the family have lived in Westbury on Long Island since 1993 and have been active parishioners at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church.

Wally was also the driving force behind the Red & Blue Terrier Ring of Honor, which has recognized the rich athletic heritage of the Prep. This has led to two very successful Gala events that have brought many of the past athletic heroes back to the school.

Of all his accomplishments though, Wally is most proud of his beautiful family. Wally and his lovely wife Lisa have three wonderful children: Walter, and his new bride Emma; Tommy; and Katie, who will be starting her senior at St. Anthony’s High School and is planning to attend the Air Force Academy in the Fall of 2019 where she will be continuing her outstanding gymnastics career.

The St. Francis Prep Community is extremely fortunate to have had Wally Bishop as its Alumni Association leader for so many years. He is a Terrier Loyal and True!
