Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

A LETTER FROM THE

PRESIDENT

Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends,

Welcome to the first quarterly edition of Grad News. One of our goals in introducing this new format is to keep you more closely connected with the exciting things happening at Prep throughout the year. Every season brings new accomplishments, new opportunities, and new reasons to celebrate our remarkable Prep community. I hope these pages give you a renewed sense of pride in all that we are accomplishing together. As I reflect on the past several months, one word comes to mind: momentum. This spring, we welcomed alumni and friends back to campus for our annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Spring Reunion, celebrating graduates whose achievements continue to inspire generations of Terriers. It was a wonderful reminder that while our alumni pursue many different paths, they remain united by the values and lifelong friendships formed here at Prep. Construction continues on the new Maspeth Federal Business & Technology Center — an investment in the future of Prep and a transformational learning environment that will teach our students financial literacy while preparing those who aspire to careers in business, finance, entrepreneurship, and technology. We are especially grateful to Tom Rudzewick ‘81, CEO of Maspeth Federal Savings, whose vision and leadership have helped launch what we believe will become a long-term strategic collaboration. Together, we are investing in opportunities that will benefit our students for generations to come. You will also read about Advancing Prep, our ongoing commitment to strengthen every aspect of the Prep experience. Whether enhancing our campus, expanding academic opportunities, deepening alumni engagement, or investing in the future through philanthropy, we continue moving forward with confidence and purpose. That same spirit of partnership was on full display at our annual Golf Classic, where alumni, parents, corporate partners, and friends came together in generous support of our students and our mission. Their continued commitment reflects the extraordinary strength of the Prep family.

Of course, no accomplishment brings us greater joy than celebrating our students. This June, we proudly graduated the Class of 2026, whose achievements reflect the talent, determination, and character that define a St. Francis Prep education. We congratulate our newest alumni and look forward to watching the impact they will make in the years ahead. As you read this issue, I also encourage you to enjoy the latest news from our Alumni Office and discover the many ways Terriers are staying connected to one another and to Prep. The bonds formed at Prep truly are forever! We remain committed to those connections by hosting meaningful programs and opportunities throughout the year. Our Franciscan mission remains at the heart of everything we do. We strive each day to form young men and women who lead with faith, humility, compassion, integrity, and a commitment to serving others. Those values have guided St. Francis Prep for generations and continue to inspire every decision we make as we prepare for an even brighter future. Thank you for your continued prayers, friendship, and generosity. Together, we are building on our proud tradition. I look forward to sharing more exciting news with you in our next issue of Grad News. On for Ol’ St. Francis,

Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. President

The St. Francis Prep Class of 1976 celebrated an historic milestone by demonstrating incredible philanthropic leadership during their Golden Terrier 50th Anniversary Reunion. The fundraising drive kicked off with a massive boost when two anonymous donors stepped forward to challenge their former classmates. They each pledged a $10,000 challenge gift, promising to match donations dollar-for-dollar to inspire a wave of collective giving from the class. Motivated by the matching challenge, the participating alumni classmates rallied together to crush the initial goal. In total, the class raised close to $50,000. This collective generosity directly benefits current and SUMMER 2026

future generations of students by funding the general scholarship fund, continuing the Prep tradition of academic excellence. DR. ROBERT CORBINO MARKS A HALF CENTURY OF TEACHING MUSIC AT PREP!

Dr. Robert Corbino, or “Doc”, the legendary, long-time Chairperson of the Music Department at St. Francis Prep completed his 50th year of service in 2026! Widely recognized as the “architect” of the school’s music program, he joined the faculty in 1976 and assumed the role of department chair in 1980. Under his leadership and with the support of a devoted and talented faculty, Dr. Corbino transformed what was once a modest, extra-curricular band activity into one of the most sophisticated and highly decorated high school music departments in the country. The music program— encompassing bands, orchestras, and chorus groups—has regularly toured across Europe, England, and Italy, performing at landmark venues like St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. A group of former music students are establishing a scholarship fund in Doc’s honor. Look for more information to follow.

Curriculum Expansion When Dr. Corbino arrived, music was not part of the academic curriculum. He successfully integrated it into regular school scheduling and introduced a jazz ensemble to broaden student musical experiences.

11 Ensembles

Under his guidance, the department expanded to manage eleven distinct performing ensembles. This includes three separate bands, three orchestras, two percussion ensembles, and three choirs. (l-r: D. Jimenez, R. Johnston, D. Kobayashi, J. Higgins, G. Maddama, R. Corbino, M. Silvagni, M. Kuraka, B. Soderberg, Fr. Sweeney

Teacher and Mentor Alumni frequently recall how “Doc” pushed them out of their comfort zone, encouraging them to pursue advanced degrees. Several alumni who pursued music professionally credit Dr. Corbino as the primary reason they became music educators or performers.

GRAD NEWS

All Experience Levels Doc elevated the program by offering beginner classes for students who have never played an instrument. He oversaw the implementation of advanced offerings like Advanced Placement (AP) Music Theory, college-credit music history, and music technology.

Program of Distinction While chairperson, St. Francis Prep became the first school ever to earn the prestigious Program of Distinction in Music from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The school later became the first to successfully renew this accolade.

Global & Papal Performances Prep student music ensembles have embarked on international travel and high-profile performances, including playing for Pope John Paul II and for Pope Benedict XVI during his 2008 visit to New York.

Recognition Dr. Corbino was recognized nationally by School Band and Orchestra magazine as one of the “50 Directors Who Make a Difference.”

Doc has been awarded a New York State Senate Proclamation, a New York City Proclamation, and the Josephine Foundation Chairman’s Honoree Award. Within the school, he received the Franciscan Spirit Award and was named an Honorary Alumnus in 2006.

SEPTEMBER 11TH LIVES & LEGACY

As we commemorate the 25th anniversary, it is our solemn promise to never forget these lives, their significance and their enduring legacy. FDNY Firefighter Michael E. Brennan, Class of 1991 was a fun-loving guy who always had a smile on his face. He was an avid snowboarder and surfer who knew that he wanted to be a fireman from a very young age. Michael joined the FDNY at 21 and was studying to take the Lieutenant test in October 2001. He earned two citations during his career. On September 11‚ 2001‚ Michael and 14 other members of his house answered the call. Michael died a hero‚ doing what he loved. He was 27 years old. His family (older brother, Brian ‘87 and his mother, Eileen Walsh) along with classmates and friends, established The Michael E. Brennan Memorial Scholarship Fund at SFP.

FDNY Lieutenant Andrew J. Desperito, Class of 1975 dreamed of being a firefighter since he was a little boy. Helping people seemed to come naturally to him. Andrew was a respected and well-loved soccer coach who brought his son’s Division 1 soccer team to a first-place championship twice. He instilled good sportsmanship in his players through his behavior on the soccer field and he strove to be the best he could in everything he did as a husband‚ father‚ son‚ brother‚ firefighter‚ soccer coach and friend. Andrew was on the 23rd floor of North Tower and was assisting a woman who was having trouble making her escape. He had just exited when the building collapsed. He was 43 years old.

FDNY Firefighter John J. Florio, Class of 1985 was an athlete dedicated to weight training and earned the position of starting halfback on the FDNY football team. John was known affectionately as the “metal-head” of his firehouse for his love of the band Metallica. Florio corresponded with the group’s lead singer‚ James Hetfield. An emotional letter from the rocker was read at Florio’s funeral. A father of two‚ he also coached his son’s Little League team and his football team. John was 33 years old. In 2019, his son, Mike followed in his footsteps and joined the ranks of the FDNY.

FDNY Firefighter Matthew Garvey, Class of 1981 was born to serve. He enlisted in the USMC in 1981 at the age of 18. In his 10-year military career he would make sergeant and become a squad leader in 2nd Anglico‚ an elite scout team that went into hostile territory ahead of ground troops. He served in Beirut and in operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He earned numerous medals and honors. He was a certified Jump Master. Garvey joined the FDNY in 1995 and earned his way into the Elite Squad 1 unit‚ based in Park Slope‚ Brooklyn. On 9/11, Matthew and his fellow squad members aided in the evacuation of thousands of people from the South tower of the World Trade Center. The tower collapsed killing Matthew and his entire squad. He was 37 years old. The inaugural First Responders Memorial Scholarship Fund award was made in his memory on the 20th Anniversary of 9/11.

“Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received—only what you have given: a full heart enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice, and courage.” – St. Francis of Assisi

FDNY Lieutenant Vincent F. Giammona, Class of 1979 enjoyed his job so much that he was known as Captain Fun. When he trained other firefighters, he always had a sense of humor, which enabled his trainees to learn the ropes quicker and without so much stress. In addition to being a born comedian, Vincent was also very athletic, and he was training for the NYC Marathon. Even though his shift had already ended on the morning of 9/11 he decided to stay. He made a quick phone call to his wife, Theresa before rushing to assist in the rescue. That would mark the last time she would hear his voice. Giammona‚ a father of four‚ had followed in the footsteps of his father‚ Vincent‚ who was an FDNY captain. September 11th was his birthday. He was 40 years old. The Vincent F. Giammona ‘79 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in his honor at SFP.

“High School is four years; St. Francis Prep is Forever”

Lieutenant Vincent G. Halloran, Class of 1976 was deployed to lead his men in the evacuation of St. Francis PrepFDNY the WTC’s North Tower. He placed his men’s lives, and those of countless others, before his own. Lt.

Remembers

Halloran celebrated his twentieth year with the FDNY on September 5, 2001. As a father of five children‚ Halloran and his wife were expecting their sixth child. He will be remembered by those who knew and loved him as a man who graced others with his overwhelming generosity; someone who proudly displayed his love for family and as a man who always shared his love of life by including his children’s friends on family trips. Every summer he and his wife had kids from Ireland come to stay with the family. He was 43 years old.

FDNY Chaplain Fr. Mychal Judge, O.F.M. Honorary Alumnus, 1991 was a Brooklyn native who spent his freshman year (1947) at Prep before entering formation for the priesthood. He rushed to the World Trade Center to offer aid and prayers to the rescuers, the injured, and the deceased. Fr. Judge was at the FDNY command center of the North Tower lobby when debris from the collapsing South Tower was ejected into the lobby. He was fatally injured and became the first officially recorded fatality of the day. In the moment before his death, Judge was repeatedly praying aloud, “Jesus, please end this right now! God, please end this!”, according to Judge’s biographer, Michael Daly. He was 68 years old.

Fr. Mychal Judge, O.F.M. H 1991 FDNY Chaplain

FDNY Firefighter Thomas Kelly, Class of 1980 was a dedicated firefighter. He remained close to his family having built his house a few blocks from his parents home in Riverhead, NY. He was an avid cyclist riding two consecutive years from Bear Mountain to Boston for AIDS awareness. He belonged to a cycle club and intended to do a cycle ride in France. Tom volunteered his time at the Atlantis Aquarium and was a certified deep-sea diver‚ diving with the club team in Cozumel and Bonaire. Thomas enjoyed life and helping people was always a priority. He perished in the collapse of the South Tower in a valiant effort to save people trapped inside. His family wrote on a 9/11memorial page, “We miss him dreadfully‚ but we imagine him in heaven as an angel doing good works. Our angel Thomas!” He was 39 years old. The Thomas R. Kelly ‘80 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in his honor at SFP.

SEPTEMBER 11TH LIVES & LEGACY FDNY Firefighter Michael F. Lynch, Class of 1986 who was 6 feet 5 inches and 230 pounds was known as “Big Mike” by his family. The firefighters in Ladder 4 called him Prancer, a nickname given him the night he thought he heard a bell and started jumping around the firehouse looking for it. He loved sports and was truly devoted to his wife, Denise and their two children: Michael and Jack. On 9/11 Mike rescued several people who were trapped in an elevator and was last seen running back into the building with the “jaws of life” cutting tool to rescue others. He was posthumously promoted to lieutenant. The Michael F. Lynch ‘86 Memorial Scholarship Fund is a permanently endowed scholarship at Prep that was established by his family and friends. Michael was 33 years old. His son Michael serves in the US Army while Jack is an FDNY candidate. PAPD Officer Alfonse J. Niedermeyer, Class of 1979 was a genuine hero even before he rushed into the World Trade Center on 9/11. In 1992, he received a special citation for rescuing passengers from a US Airways jet that skidded off a runway at La Guardia Airport. Having just returned from a vacation he immediately rushed to the scene to assist in the evacuation. He was last seen bravely charging into the South Tower to save others before it collapsed. Al was posthumously awarded the PAPD Medal of Honor. His wife, Nancy found out she was pregnant with their second child, a week after her husband’s memorial service. She said in an interview, “I just want people to know that through all of this tragedy there is hope.” Al was 40 years old. The Alfonse J. Niedermeyer ‘79 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in his honor at SFP. FDNY Lieutenant Kevin J. Pfeifer, Class of 1978 is remembered as a quiet, yet adventurous man, driven to succeed in all that he did, but never one to seek glory for himself. In Mr. Pfeifer’s work as a city paramedic and later as a fire lieutenant, he had a knack for quietly bringing out the best in people. He was an expert sailor who loved to bring his friends out with him. He also had a private pilot’s license and logged 400 hours of flying time. Kevin always wanted to be like his brother Deputy Chief Joseph‚ and he adored his sister‚ Mary Ellen. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Lt. Pfeifer responded to the North Tower of the World Trade Center. In his final moments, he stayed behind to redirect other firefighters to safety, which ultimately saved many lives but prevented him from escaping before the tower collapsed. He was 42 years old.

Battalion Chief Lawrence T. Stack, Class of 1960 spent six years in the US Navy; the last of which was during the Vietnam War. Following his honorable discharge in 1966‚ he had a brief stint with the NYPD prior to joining the New York City Fire Department. Throughout his highly decorated 33-year FDNY career, he supervised‚ trained‚ and earned the respect of many. On 9/11 he helped free two Lieutenants trapped in the rubble after the collapse of the South Tower. Chief Stack‚ along with the two Lieutenants‚ found their way out of the collapse and he continued working in the North Tower. He was helping rescue people from the North Tower when it collapsed. He was 58 years old.

FDNY Captain Timothy M. Stackpole, Class of 1977 inspired many through his faith, compassion and determination. After being trapped in a fire while performing a rescue in 1998, he spent several months in the Burn Center with fourth and fifth degree burns over 30% of his body. He endured many surgeries and months of painful rehabilitation. Through it all, he had two goals. One was to spend as much time as he could with his family. The second was to return to full duty to the job he loved. He was promoted to Captain and returned to full duty. On 9/11 Timmy was off duty when he rushed to assist in the rescue. He led a team that ran into the South Tower to rescue victims after it was struck. He and the others all perished when the tower collapsed. Tim was a loving husband and friend‚ an adored father‚ and a loving‚ devoted son and brother. He was 42 years old. The Timothy Stackpole ‘77 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in his honor at SFP.

Jill Maurer-Campbell, Class of 1988 was known to be very confident, independent and focused on

achieving what she set out to do. Her passion for travel took her to many places including London, Paris, Ireland, Scotland, and Australia. Jill worked as the executive assistant to the founder and CEO of Baseline Financial Services on the 78th floor of the South Tower. She and her husband, Steven had one son, Jake. Cono E. Gallo, Class of 1989 married his sweetheart, Vicki Nita-Gallo, in 1996. They had a very loving

and sweet marriage together. Cono graduated from Fordham University Gabelli School of Business and worked as a commodities broker with Carr Futures on the 92nd floor of the North Tower. While he was one floor below the impact zone, debris from above impeded all the escape routes, and no one on the floor survived, including Cono. He was 30 years old.

Marian R. Hrycak, Class of 1963 worked for the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance in the South Tower. His specialty was investigating shopkeepers who charged consumers tax on items that are tax-free. His wife, Joanne said that when they met in 1967, she could not bring herself to call him by his given name. “He was Marty.” They married in 1969, raised two children. He collected books, stamps, coins and Conan comic books. On 9/11, Marty went to work as usual but never came home. Shortly before 9 a.m. he called his wife to say he was safely out of the building. That is how he lived his life – gentle, kind, honest, generous, and loving. He also loved to read mysteries and watch the Discovery Channel. Mike was an avid weightlifter, basketball player and was also passionate about cars; cherishing his red 1985 Chevy Camaro. He was working as a bond trader for Cantor Fitzgerald in the North Tower, just above the impact site of Flight 11. He and 658 of his firm’s employees were killed. His memory has been honored with a street co-naming near his family home in Glendale. He was 26 years old.

Post 9/11 Related Illness

The contamination in the air at the World Trade Center site caused many rescue personnel to become extremely ill. St. Francis Prep honors alumni who passed away years later due to toxic exposure illnesses contracted during the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero.

Howard “Howie” J. Bischoff, Class of 1970 was an FDNY Lieutenant who passed away on September 22, 2014, at the age of 58 from a 9/11-related illness. He dedicated 19 years of service to the department and responded to Ground Zero, where he inhaled toxic dust that ultimately led to his death.

James Thomas Farrell , Jr., Class of 1995 was a Sergeant on the Suffolk County Police Department who responded to Chelsea Piers in Manhattan to help with lights and generators for an emergency trauma and First Aid center. He served with the SCPD for 22 years. James passed away on December 1, 2017 from a 9/11-related illness.

Kevin George Hawkins, Class of 1983 a Detective, was a dedicated NYPD officer and U.S. Marine veteran who worked tirelessly at the site of the terrorist attacks and was posthumously honored for his supreme sacrifice. He passed away on May 7, 2007, from kidney cancer contracted after inhaling toxic chemicals following the attacks at the World Trade Center.

Colleen Keneally-Brown Class of 1981 was an MTA employee who operated the “pump train” at the Cortlandt Street station on 9/11 to clear out the massive amounts of floodwater from the tunnels below the World Trade Center. She worked there for an entire year. In 2023 she retired and passed away the following year from a 9/11 related cancer.

ALUMNI DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Chris Mendolia ‘87

Director of Alumni Relations Dear Alumni, As the summer has brought us all a much needed opportunity to slow our pace and unwind, it has also provided a chance to look back on this past year and reflect on all of the memorable events that took place involving our students, and all of the events that were geared to the SFP alumni base.

As

we look forward to the 2026-2027school year we are excited to share with you many of the exciting things that are being planned for our students, as well as the many local and regional events that will take place to bring our alumni community together. The opening of the school year in September was highlighted by our annual Walk-a-thon. Unlike the previous year, the weather cooperated with sunny skies and a temperature around 70 degrees. Prep spirit was on full display as our students and faculty walked over two miles along the Alley Pond Park path through Cunningham Park before returning to Prep where the our 12th graders kicked off their senior year with a BBQ/picnic in the park behind the school. The collective efforts of our students, families and alumni raised nearly $300,000. The next day we celebrated the accomplishments of four extraordinary graduates as they were inducted into The St. Francis Prep Hall of Fame prior to the annual spring reunion. Postponed from the previous May, the ceremony celebrated the achievements and contributions to the community made by Jon Fredas ’81, Reginald DesRoches ’85, Christine Persichette ’90, and the late Bryan Collins ’82. Additionally, SFP controller, Joseph DiSomma, and longtime coach, Robert Capen, were awarded Honorary Alumnus status. In October, alumni and friends came out to play in, and support The SFP 3-on-3

Basketball Tournament and reception honoring Jimmy Prendergast ’79, James Prendergast H’11 and Brian K. O’Connor ’86. As always, a great amount of effort on the part of Sean Prendergast and many of his friends made the night one of great success and countless laughs. The following Sunday, Prep alumni again gathered for our annual First Responders Family Day 5K Run/Walk here at The Prep. William Ashton ‘76, James Hodgens ’76 and Gerard Flood ’87 were honored at the event this year for their remarkable service to their communities and to our country. As October was a very busy month for us here at 6100, we held the first of 2 sports jersey retirements. Joanne Persico ’84 who has served as the head coach of The St. John’s University Women’s Volleyball Team for some 30 years was honored with the retirement of her #13 SFP volleyball jersey before the Prep varsity squad took on Xaverian. A Big East Conference Champion at St. John’s, Coach Jojo is the winningest coach in school history for any sport. She is also the only person to be named both Big East Player of the Year and Big East Coach of the Year. A reception followed with her family, many of her former Prep teammates and her SJU players. Our annual Alumni Memorial Mass was held in early November. The Prep’s new chaplain, Fr. Thimote Cherulius, blessed the new additions to our “Pathway to St. Francis” as well as the new “Banners of Honor” that hang in the gym.

Next up, on November 10, the SFP Social Studies Department hosted a number of Prep alumni who have served or are currently serving in the US military. Following breakfast, keynote speaker, US Marine Sgt. Jonathan Ally ’16 spoke to our seniors about his experiences in the military relating them closely to his experiences at SFP. The veterans were then deployed to classrooms to speak about the importance of service before rejoining for lunch. As usual in December, we held our Annual Christmas Party for our Friends with Special Needs. A Prep tradition started 35 years ago by the late, beloved Sr. Joseph Agnes Hohmann. As is always the case faculty & staff members came together with the Parents Guild and dozens of student volunteers to create a wonderful event for our guests. After the Christmas break, we got right back to work with a busy weekend in late January. On Friday night, January 23, we held our second jersey retirement, honoring Drew Samuels ’97 at halftime of the Varsity Basketball game against Xaverian. Drew read a heartfelt letter he received from Bro. Leonard almost 30 years ago that had great impact on him throughout his life. After the ceremony, we celebrated with Drew’s friends and teammates who came from far and near, at a reception in one of our beautiful new multi use areas. The following evening we held The Winter 10-15-20 reunion for the classes of 2006, 2011 and 2016. This anniversary celebration is always a great

way to catch up with old friends during the long cold winter. March was a particularly busy month as The Prep first headed south to sunny Florida for a gathering of alumni who live in the Sunshine state and for those who wanted to escape the frigid Northeast for a long weekend. The event, which included a NY Mets Spring Training game and a dinner at The Dolphin Bar and Shrimp House in Jensen Beach, was greatly enjoyed by over 75 people who attended. Special thanks indeed to Peter Corritori, ’59 and Steve Banas ’81 for their sponsorship and hospitality. We look forward to another great event, this time in Tampa, this coming March! Next stop was NYC for The St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The weather was perfect for marching and so we did. Current students were joined by faculty and alumni for what always turns about to be a great day! Another ’25-’26 SFP Alumni highlight was the Terrier Red and Blue Ring of Honor Gala which took place at The Crest Hollow Country Club on March 20. 41 SFP athletes, 10 coaches and 4 championship teams were inducted into the Ring. We look forward to unveiling of The Wall of Fame honoring all 189 players, 43 coaches and 11 teams that have been inducted into The Ring. That will take place on October 24 as we dedicate The SFP gymnasium to Bro. Robert Kent. We hadn’t really had enough of St.

SUMMER 2026

Patrick’s Day by the time April rolled around, so back to marching we went. This year, The Bayside St. Patrick’s Parade, a great local event, again brought current and past Prepsters together to march down Bell Blvd. on a sunny early spring Saturday afternoon. This year SFP Principal, Pat McLaughlin ’73 served as Grand Marshal! As always, the spring brought many Prep alums together at two annual events. In May our spring reunion welcomed back graduates from as recent as 2001 and as far back as 1951. The 50th anniversary class of 1976 had incredible 116 alums in attendance. The night was even more special as we honored John Collins ‘79 and Ronald Gentile’83 by inducting them into The St. Francis Prep Hall of Fame and bestowing Honorary Alumnus status on Director of Security, Kim Skellington and long time Associate Director of Development, Mike Graziano. The 32nd Annual SFP Golf Classic was held at The Cherry Valley Club in Garden City on June 15. A perfect day for golf was matched only by the contributions to the Prep made by Honorees Chris and Teresa Greene ’81 and Rob McDermott ’87. In addition to a fantastic dinner, the evening was highlighted by great speeches delivered by Teresa and Rob, a live auction and a raffle win to the 2027 Major League Baseball All-Star game by Steve Olwell ’03. We are eternally grateful to all of the sponsors and participants who made this event so successful! Looking forward to the upcoming

school year, we have a calendar full of events, new and old for our alumni to enjoy. In addition to all of our annual events including the Memorial Mass, Veteran’s Day Program, reunions, etc., This year the Alumni Office is planning to hold gatherings in Boston, Las Vegas, The Carolinas and the West Coast of Florida. We are also excited to dedicate the Gymnasium to Bro. Robert Kent and The Ring of Honor Wall of Fame to Patricia A. Brown, late wife of John Brown ’76. Be on the lookout for emails detailing all of the events as well as a pre-parade St. Patrick’s Day reception in Manhattan. We hope that you will be able to join us for some of these fun-filled events. They truly are great avenues to reconnect with old friends, connect with new ones, and of course stay connected to St. Francis Prep! “High School is Four Years, St. Francis Prep is Forever!”

Our gratitude and heartfelt farewell to our retiring faculty and staff members. For decades, each of you have embodied our Franciscan values and left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of generations of Prepsters. Now it’s time to slow down, relax, and appreciate the beauty and simple joys of life. We celebrate your remarkable careers and pray that God blesses you with joy, peace, and good health as you begin this well-deserved next chapter of your lives.

Yanchen (Angela) Wang, a senior

in our Science Research Program, was named a prestigious Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS) Scholar for her project that investigated the features and risk factors of sleep paralysis (SP) in high school students in America, the first of its kind to examine SP among adolescents in Western countries. St. Francis Prep. is the only school in Queens and one of only three Catholic schools in all of New York State to have a named scholar this year. Congratulations, Angela!

The high-energy musical Newsies! was presented by the Prep’s Art Department and the Alvernian Drama Society in the newly established The William D. Maroney ‘55 and Family Performing Arts Center. It was a twonight engagement (April 24 & 25) and was a full of unforgettable music, powerful storytelling, and nonstop dancing. Members of the Maroney family were present to meet the actors and witness the first production which incorporated the new (and most incredible) LED digital backdrop. This amazing technology was made possible throught the Maroney family’s generosity. It creates vibrant, highly immersive stage environments and can seamlessly blend static and moving images. Veteran SFP faculty member, Donna Mejia is the director of the Alvernian Drama Society and oversees and directs their major mainstage productions, including their fall dramas and spring musicals. Congratulations to these wonderfully talented and dedicated students.

Eselle Seungran Lim ‘27 received a Gold Medal in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards at Carnegie Hall for her first oil painting, “Exhausted”. Notably, only one half of one percent of greater than 30,000 entries were awarded gold medals. Students and art teachers from all over the United States gathered to accept their medals. Congratulations to the faculty members in the Prep Art Department who inspire our students. Congratulations Eselle on your exquisite, artistic talent! Pictured (l-r): Jeanne Buccino (Art Dept. Chair), Eselle, and Dianna Shmerykowsky ‘01 (Art Faculty).

Prep’s Music Department was recognized once again for being among the Best Communities for Music Education. (Notably, the SFP Music program has earned this distingction every year since 2019!) A statement read, “The NAMM Foundation is proud to recognize St. Francis Prep for the outstanding efforts of your teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who are making music part of a well-rounded education for every child. We salute the commitment of your community to ensure that every child can learn and grow with music.” NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) is the not-for-profit trade association representing the global music products industry, founded in 1901. Musical training helps develop language and reasoning and builds imagination and intellectual curiosity. Just like playing sports, children can develop motor skills when playing music and students who practice with musical instruments demonstrate improved hand-eye coordination. Mr. Robert Johnston, Director the Strings Program said, “There are no amateur doctors or amateur lawyers, but there are plenty of amateur musicians who develop a life-long appreciation and derive great fulfillment from their time practicing music and being part of a music ensemble.”

OUR FRANCISCAN SPIRIT Every edition of Grad News features a member of the Prep community whose life work reflects and animates our Franciscan values. In this issue we’ve asked English teacher and Assistant Principal,

Joe Castellano to contribute a reflection of his career at SFP. Joe is embarking on a new chapter of his life: retirement! Thank you, Joe! Enjoy your retirement! Dear St. Francis Prep Alumni, The editors of the Alumni Newsletter asked me if I would like to make some comments as I retire after 43 years of teaching at St. Francis Prep. I thank them for the opportunity to reflect on my years here and, perhaps, to reconnect with some former students. Some of these comments are from my final comments to the faculty and staff at our last meeting for the year. First, I want to salute and thank fellow retirees Ann Marie Pedalino and Sandi Vandermosten for all their years of good work and service. We appreciate and respect all they have done for the students and school. Good work. Thank you. I wish them a wonderful retirement. In the film The Last Waltz, before Neil Young plays with The Band, he says this: “I’d just like to say before I start that it’s one of the pleasures of my life to be able to be on the stage with these people tonight.” I want to paraphrase Neil Young: It is and has been one of the pleasures and joys of my life to be part of the faculty and staff of St. Francis Prep – part of the St. Francis Prep family. I have been graced to be part of this community for many years. I am proud of the incredible things we do every day. I am grateful to have been part of it. Being married to my wife, Mary, the Father of Claire and Cecilia, and a teacher at St. Francis Prep have been the greatest blessings of my life. I am so thankful and grateful to have had the opportunity to do what I have done these years. It really has been a joy. I cherish the many teachers and staff I have gotten to know. I am thankful to have worked with such dedicated and caring people. Good work. Keep it going. I am especially thankful for all the students I have taught, met, and worked with over the years. I have so enjoyed sharing my love of writing, literature, and thinking with my

students. You inspired me and challenged me. Of course, I hope you learned something in our classes together. I want you to know how much I learned from you. Thank you.

experienced this feeling yourself. We are not perfect by any means, but we do good work every day. I am so thankful to have been a part of that good work.

St. Francis Prep really is a special place. This past December, Br. Leonard told us about a project that two teachers at St. Anthony’s High School are working on. They call it the Little Flowers Project. They are trying to gather from the teachers and staff members at the two schools what makes a Franciscan education different and special; they want to see if they can capture a little bit about the Franciscan spirit and charism of our schools. Br. Leonard encouraged us to participate in the project. When I had my interview, here is some of what I said.

Our faculty, guidance counselors, staff, administrators, Cafeteria workers, Maintenance staff – everyone – do incredible things every day in every part of this building. I am not going to try to list them all: there are so many that I could not. But let me say this.

“Joseph, it’s a good work.” - Bro. Becket Ryan

I first walked into St. Francis Prep in January 1979. As rough as my classroom experiences were back when I began, I realized pretty quickly that there was something different – something special – about St. Francis Prep. I sensed – in all my naivete, obliviousness, and struggle – something different about St. Francis Prep that I really liked. There was and is a sense of camaraderie and community among the faculty and staff. Equally important, I experienced a feeling of community and common purpose between the students and their teachers that I had never witnessed. I loved it. I wanted to be part of it. Graduates of St. Francis Prep, I hope, know what I mean. I hope you

Back in the late 1980s, my good friend Br. Becket Ryan and I carpooled together for two years. Whenever I joined him on one of his many service activities, after we finished, he would say, “Joseph, it’s a good work.” Indeed. All the work we do at St. Francis Prep – in the classrooms, in the offices, on the courts and fields, on the stages, at retreats, everywhere – is a good work. I thank and commend all our faculty and staff for their dedication and effort and patience and goodness. I thank our students for joining us in that good work. I want to end by saying that I am thankful for everything. I am thankful for all the students I got to meet and teach. I am thankful for all the faculty and staff members I got to work with over the years. Whenever I talk to my good friend Nick Paccione, he says, “I miss teaching every day, and that’s a good thing.” I imagine I will feel the same way. I am thankful, grateful, and blessed to have known and worked with all of you and for the chance to do some of God’s work. As Pat McLaughlin would say, what we do matters. Thank you all. Take care. Be well. As Br. Becket would say, God bless us all. Peace,

Joe Joseph Castellano

Nicholas Corona Jr. Dr. Castellano made learning fun. He truly cared about his students. Need so many more teachers like him. He will be missed! Maria Puppelo Esposito I was in his first class! Class of 1980! Congratulations and enjoy your retirement! Dawn Lambertsen Kelly Even as a writer, I’m finding it difficult to put into words just how much having you as my English teacher at Prep influenced my life and career. First and foremost, you created a special space in your classroom where I felt safe sharing my ideas — something that carried with me through years of pitching stories in Hollywood and later working in the writers’ rooms on LOST and Cold Case. You made me a better writer without ever diminishing those ideas; instead, you helped them blossom. You taught me how to find my voice so that, in turn, I could help my characters find theirs. That is a gift I can never fully thank you for. Wishing you a peaceful and fulfilling retirement. May this next chapter bring you plenty of time to read, write, and do what makes you happiest. With love and gratitude, Dawn Lambertsen Kelly, Class of ’89

is the captain of the Odysea and cast member of National Geographic Channel’s smash hit Wicked Tuna. Wicked Tuna is a reality series following the tough life on land and at sea of a group of skilled bluefin tuna fishermen sailing out of Gloucester, Massachusetts. The competition to make a catch is brutal, with every fisherman’s livelihood on the line as they pursue a disappearing species of valuable fish. Only the most skilled fishermen are up to the task and the exertions, day after day, of tuna fishing. When Bro. Leonard Conway was in Cape Cod during Easter break he had the opportunity to have dinner with Brooklyn born former student, captain and reality TV star. Ralph runs a successful charter fishing boat the Odysea in Provincetown. He is inviting any Prepsters to come to town for a great trip. You can contact him or book on line. Simply Google Capt. Amy McGorry, Class of 1987, has long battled two rare autoimmune diseases that degraded her liver to the point that she needed a transplant. By February, her health began to deteriorate so rapidly that she started experiencing bouts of fainting and internal bleeding. That’s about the time when the spirit of St. Francis when into overdrive. So many of her fellow Prepsters offered prayers and support through a Facebook post entitled “Amy Needs a Liver”. In March 2026, Amy was at Prep’s Terrier Red and Blue Terrier Ring of Honor event in honor of her sister —a four-sport star —Regan McGorryBeaton ‘90. Unbeknownst to her, so too was the person who was both a match and a willing donor. The donor wanted to remain anonymous leading up to the transplant surgery in June. Now the news is out! Amy said, “Meet my hero! Sue Filshie...a fellow St. Francis Prep alumna [Class of 1989] and former tennis camp partner when we were 12 and 10 years old. We share a trophy and now a liver! God bless her!” Ultimately, Susan (Logan) Filshie ‘89 lived up to the quote she chose for her San Fran yearbook picture: “When you need a friend, don’t look to a stranger. You know in the end I’ll always be there!”

From Inspiration to Publication

I graduated back in 1992. When I was a freshman at SFP, I struggled a great deal in English class. My freshman English grade was my lowest grade in all four years. However, in sophomore year I had Mr. Madri who made English fun. He taught me how to enjoy literature. In my senior year, I had Mrs. Barricelli (Lynch) for English. She encouraged me to do a bit of creative writing. I found I liked it a great deal. I went on to get an MFA in creative writing, and last September Unsolicited Press published my first book, a memoir— Stolen: Love & Loss in the Time of COVID-19. My next memoir—a travelogue about Nepal—will be out in 2028. I would be happy if you could share this information with the SFP community. Thank you, Elizabeth Jaeger, Class of 1992

Thank You, Terrier Alumni!

Terrier Alumni embody our credo, “High school is four years; St. Francis Prep is Forever.” Throughout the year, alumni return for flagship events like Career Night, Veterans Day, Music and Drama performances, the Annual Science Research Symposium and of course—Alumni Class Reunions. Faculty often invite former students who are now established professionals into the classroom to help enrich the academic curriculum and to provide real-world experiences. At the foundation of all Alumni events and activities are the men and women of the SFP Alumni Board. They are a dedicated, volunteer leadership group that sustains Prep’s Franciscan mission by keeping over 30,000 graduates actively connected to the Terrier community. Organized into activity-based committees, the board serves as the operational bridge between the Development and Alumni Offices and its massive alumni base. We are grateful for their dedication and commitment. We’re truly indebted to your generosity and your continued participation, which keeps the Terrier Spirit shining bright.
