OUR MISSION
As a Catholic Montessori school, St. Catherine’s is dedicated to an educational experience which awakens in our students the awareness of their gifts and responsibilities as individuals in relationship with Jesus Christ and as stewards of the global community.
MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear St. Catherine’s Community,

It has been a remarkable year for St. Catherine's Montessori. As you turn the pages of this year's Annual Report, you will see countless hallmarks of a truly special school community. It takes many people with a diverse collection of skills, passions, and commitments to create a vibrant community. This is certainly true of St. Catherine's.
Our faculty's passion for observing and guiding our students’ journeys is the keystone of our culture. Their dedication to our students and mission has always been what attracts families to St. Catherine's. As I reflect on my first year with this beautiful community, I see our continuous commitment to living our mission to awaken in our students the awareness of their gifts and responsibilities as individuals in relationship with Jesus Christ and as stewards of the global community. We are blessed to have been entrusted with our students’ education. Each day our faculty, staff, and administration labor with full effort to follow the curriculum and traditions established by Dr. Maria Montessori more than one hundred years ago, fostering the development of the whole child - intellectually, physically, socially, morally, and spiritually.
This year we had our consultation visit with Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), and it was a fantastic professional development opportunity that provided personalized feedback to Lower School guides and administrators. This benefits our school by providing a standard of excellence and serves as a vehicle for continuing education for faculty and administrators. Consultation is pedagogical in nature: it safeguards and enhances compliance with AMI standards and gives additional assurance to families that we are providing an authentic Montessori education for their children. The guiding directive for consultation is to give support and assistance to the adults who work within the sphere of the child. The consultants absolutely loved our school and gave us great feedback.
I want to thank the entire community for supporting our goals through volunteerism and generous philanthropy this school year. Together we achieved record-breaking Annual Fund giving and returned to in-person galas with the successful Raise the Roof for Japhet. Your giving impacts every member of our community, strengthens our educational programs and campus culture, and allows us to embark on our school’s next steps. Thank you for giving to our current students and to those who one day will attend St. Catherine's. Your generosity will continue to make a difference for years to come.
As I look ahead to next year, I am excited for what is to come. The trajectory is set with rising enrollment, the enhancement of campus facilities, a mission-driven faculty and staff, and an excellent ethos because of the great community supporting us. St. Catherine's people and culture make it remarkable, and this is why I am so excited to reflect on our past, see our present, and celebrate our continual accomplishments.
I am immensely honored to serve in this fantastic community and wish you all a great summer!

Lina Delgado Head of School
MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT
Dear St. Catherine’s Community,

It is hard to believe that we have come so quickly to the end of another successful school year at St. Catherine’s! In September, the Board of Directors shared with you its two main goals for the 2022-2023 school year:
1. To continue to support Lina Delgado as she settles into her first year as Head of School.
2. To create the next Strategic Plan
The Board is pleased to share that, with your community support, these goals have been met.
The Board believes Lina has done an excellent job in her first year as Head of School. This year has been incredibly busy with all the pre-pandemic community events back up and running, a gala, and strategic planning. Lina joyfully joined in the work and led our community through another wonderful year. We have found her to be an excellent partner in school leadership and are excited about what is to come next year.
The Strategic Plan is almost complete. The Board extends its appreciation and gratitude to Kathy Hijazi and Chad Mavity, the Strategic Planning Committee Co-Chairs. They have done an immense amount of work in leading us in this process. We are also very grateful to the St. Catherine’s community for filling out surveys, attending focus groups, and actively participating in this process. Once finalized, the Strategic Plan will be posted to the Board page of the website. We are excited for what the future holds and the work that we will do together.
In addition to being grateful to you for helping us to meet our goals, we appreciate the many ways you support St. Catherine’s from contributing to the SCM Annual Fund to volunteering for Advancement and PSO-led events. We feel blessed to be part of the St. Catherine’s community and continuing to fulfill the mission and vision set forth by our foundresses, Sr. Edna Ann and Sr. Shirley.
We hope this summer brings you opportunities for rest and relaxation, and we look forward to seeing you in the fall.
Sincerely,

Ryan Patterson Board President

A CULTURE OF
Philanthropy
This has been an incredible year of fundraising at St. Catherine’s Montessori. Our generous community of families, friends, and partners gave $207,908 to the SCM Annual Fund – a record high for our school. This outpouring of generosity demonstrates the trust our community has in the St. Catherine’s mission and our vision for how we can continue to grow as an exceptional Catholic Montessori institution. We are honored by the faith placed in us and pleased to share how your philanthropic support has made an immediate and sustained impact on the school.
With your Annual Fund giving, St. Catherine’s:
•hired two Montessorians to support our Primary and Elementary classrooms;
•provided executive AMI coaching for our Head of School;
•continued our annual program of professional development activities for employees;
•sponsored additional, AMI training for four administrators, one guide, and one assistant;
•will sponsor AMI training for one administrator, six guides, and two assistants in 2023-2024;
•has increased employee salaries and will launch an employer-matched retirement savings plan August 2023; and
•awarded a record $115,000 in tuition assistance for 2023-2024.
These are just a few examples of how contributions to the 2022-2023 SCM Annual Fund are enhancing the strength of our educational programs, improving compensation packages for our faculty and staff, and better meeting the financial needs of our families.
The 2023 SCM Gala, Raise the Roof for Japhet, raised an impressive $215,772 and brought the party spirit back to St. Catherine’s after a five-year hiatus from in-person galas. The creative vision and thoughtful dedication of Gala Chairs Mollie Pappas, Jennifer Wu, and Alison Young brought the community together for an unforgettable evening. The event raised the funds that will allow us to evolve our Japhet Campus to better serve the needs of our Adolescent Community, provide unique outdoor educational opportunities for our high school and Lower School students, and give our greater community at pastoral gathering place.
Fully integrating Japhet Campus into our students’ learning experience will be one of the significant steps St. Catherine’s takes in the next decade, and the gala’s success is what allows us to begin renovations and new construction this summer and anticipate completion in spring 2024. Thank you to the gala chairs, sponsors, underwriters, volunteers, and donors.
With our community’s generosity and support great things are happening at St. Catherine’s. We are excited to take this journey with you!
With sincere gratitude,

Lyndsey Ray Advancement Director

THE SHEDD FAMILY
This September the Shedd family gave $45,000 to the SCM Annual Fund – the largest individual Annual Fund gift in St. Catherine’s Montessori history. In doing so, they were not only continuing a history of generous support and service but also building on a legacy established nearly 25 years ago. When RJ and Kristin Shedd were expecting their son Oliver, RJ’s parents, Cliff and Michelle Shedd, suggested they think about St. Catherine’s Montessori. The year was 2009, and the family already had a decade-long relationship with SCM. RJ’s younger brothers, Travis and Dan, attended St. Catherine’s in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and in the intervening years Cliff and Michelle continued to support the school as alumni parents by contributing to the Annual Fund and to the capital campaign that built SCM’s current Timberside campus. Occasionally, Cliff would include a short note with their gifts; proudly sharing updates about Travis and Dan’s college and high school experiences and expressing how much he and Michelle missed their friends at St. Catherine’s.
In 2012, Oliver began his first day of Primary, followed by sister Clara in 2014 and brother Toby in 2021. With Oliver’s enrollment, the Shedd family’s connection with St. Catherine’s grew. As a second generation entered the classroom, Cliff and Michelle added “current grandparents” to their list of SCM affiliations, and RJ and Kristin began their own tradition of giving and engagement.

Together, the Shedd family has made a profound impact on St. Catherine’s Montessori. For over two decades, they have remained dedicated to the mission, committed to helping the school meet its greatest needs, and deeply passionate about supporting guides, staff, and other St. Catherine’s families. In 2020, Cliff and Michelle established the Miller-Shedd Family Charitable Fund from which they and members of their immediate family direct gifts to organizations close to their hearts. St. Catherine’s has been the grateful recipient of multiple leadership gifts from the Fund.
In addition, the Shedds are all fixtures on the SCM campus. From attending events like Grandparents and Special Friends Day, the gala, Fall Fest, Spring Fling, and Mass, to volunteering as Room Parent, hosting Sociables, driving for Going Out, and chairing Friends of Athletics, the family’s dedication to St. Catherine’s serves as a testament to their values of faith, service, and philanthropy.
The Shedd family’s journey is one of love, dedication, and unwavering support for St. Catherine’s Montessori. Their multi-generational commitment continues to enrich the lives of countless children and adolescents, ensuring that St. Catherine’s may, in the words of “endeavor always to keep burning within [them] that light which is called intelligence.”

Maria Montessori,

THE POWER OF Community
PARENT SERVICE ORGANIZATION (PSO)
It has been such an honor to serve as PSO President for the 2022-2023 school year, and a privilege to work alongside the selfless parents, dedicated faculty and staff, and bright students to fulfill the PSO mission of building community through service.
I would like to thank Catherine Barber, PSO President Emerita; Mary Tysor, PSO Treasurer; and Tracey Ledoux, PSO Secretary, who have each supported our efforts as PSO officers and have contributed to this community in so many ways.
During this school year, the PSO committees accomplished many great things at St. Catherine’s, including:
• PSO Ambassadors organized playdates, and Parent Potlucks welcomed new families and connected them with the community.
• Friends of the Garden continued their efforts to maintain our beautiful campus by planting and weeding, and by preparing the grounds for community gatherings.
• Fall Fest and Spring Fling brought together SCM families, old and new, for potluck picnics and playground fun.
• Friends of the Atrium celebrated the liturgical year with Christian meditation, Rosaries, and saint dedications, and provided support for our monthly Mass.
• Friends of the Library and Friends of the Arts organized and helped coordinate the annual Book Fair and Christmas Concert.
• Book Club selected a nice variety of titles and hosted fun and thought-provoking discussions.
• Friends of Athletics supported our student-athletes, and Steps 4 Students organized Team SCM so we could proudly display our St. Catherine’s spirit at the annual 5K Run/Walk in downtown Houston.
• Sociables chairs coordinated 13 unique parties and activities throughout the year.
• Casa de Esperanza committee organized drives for back-to-school supplies and socks, underwear, and PJs in support of the children of Casa de Esperanza.
• Faculty and Staff Appreciation committee treated the amazing faculty and staff with goodies throughout the year, with highlights of the annual Chili Lunch and Dessert Soirée.
I am deeply grateful to each of these committees and to all the parents who attended events and meetings, chaperoned overnight trips and Going Out activities, and helped make the biennial gala a success. You helped St. Catherine’s return to much-loved traditions this year, and I thank you for your time, efforts, and love for our school community. You are all so very much appreciated!
