OUR MISSION

As a Catholic Montessori school, St. Catherine’s is dedicated to an educational experience which awakens in our students the awareness of their gifts and responsibilities as individuals in relationship with Jesus Christ and as stewards of the global community.

MESSAGE FROM HEAD THE OF SCHOOL

Dear St. Catherine’s Community,

The 2019-2020 school year tested our endurance, faith, and resilience and taught us the importance of working together to be successful. The highlights achieved at St. Catherine’s during this year have been accompanied by an unexpected journey, which has amplified the extraordinary support, collaboration, and trust exhibited by all members of this community. Thank you for your generous support and understanding as we transitioned from in-person learning to learning from home.

This year our students were able to achieve many significant accomplishments bringing them newsworthy attention several times. They were interviewed live on 90.1 KPFT radio regarding the Climate Caucus they organized in September. Invitations followed for speaking engagements on the topic where students were recognized for months afterwards for how knowledgeable and articulate they were.

Our campus grounds were enhanced through the dedication of The Mann Family Meditation Garden at a blessing ceremony attended by donor Shannon Mann and landscape architect Keiji Asakura, who generously designed and oversaw the installation of the garden. The labyrinth at the front of the school in the Dominican Peace Garden was constructed by the Adolescent Community and High School students with the guidance of Jay Stailey, who has installed many labyrinths around the city and world.

The Guides continued their professional development by beginning the year with a training by Dr. Alison Awes, a world-renowned Montessorian who provided strategies to help those with reading difficulties at every level. In the spring, Guides were joined by parents and students to hear Dr. William R. Stixrud speak about “The Self-Driven Child” and to listen to Dr. Crystal Collier speak of the neuroscience of high-risk behavior.

After moving to learning from home, many in our community creatively supported our traditions in a virtual way. We continued our tradition of Spring Fling by sharing music, cooking, and enjoying family time; live-streamed Mass; and held a virtual 6th year retreat, a virtual Adolescent Community affirmation ceremony, and celebratory car parades to close out the year.

Thanks to the long-term vision of the Board of Directors, the final portion of land acquisition at Japhet Creek was completed to provide an opportunity for environmental science and sustainability studies.

Our greatest milestone of the year was graduating our first class of seniors – The Class of 2020!! In spite of uncertainty and numerous changes, the graduates had a wonderful outdoor live-streamed commencement ceremony followed by a candlelit labyrinth walk to take them on a meditative journey from being St. Catherine’s students to exiting as alumni. We couldn’t be more proud of what they have accomplished and what kind of human beings they have become.

Our graduates were accepted into the college or university they desired and all earned scholarship awards that cumulatively amounted to $1.1 million.

We owe the success of these students not only to their pioneering spirit and hard work, but also to the investment each of you has made in St. Catherine’s over the years. Thank you!

Blessings,

SCM Annual Fund

"EVERY FAMILY FOR EVERY CHILD"

The SCM Annual Fund is the foundation of all St. Catherine’s Montessori giving because it touches every member of our community and allows us to fully fund the cost of educating each child enrolled at school.

Annual contributions to the Fund provide the necessary resources to cover classroom materials, salaries and benefits for our guides and staff, professional development, and campus utilities and maintenance. In addition, these funds allow St. Catherine’s to maintain affordable tuition rates for the benefit of all SCM families.

An Education FOR LIFE

Maintaining affordable tuition for families who wish to send their children to St. Catherine’s Montessori is a fundamental principle in which our Dominican foundresses firmly believed when they opened the school in 1966. Sr. Edna Ann Hebert, OP and Sr. Shirley Owens, OP † also believed in providing education to children from diverse backgrounds, and these values set the stage for our long-held position to remain affordable and inclusive.

In 2019-2020, St. Catherine’s awarded $60,000 in tuition assistance to 31 students from 21 families.

Also in 2019-2020, with the combined contributions of grant support, individual giving, the annual Steps 4 Students 5K Run/Walk, and Great Conversations, we received a total of $61,112 towards the SCM Tuition Assistance Program, which allows St. Catherine’s to provide future tuition aid directly to our families

Steps 4 Students: $8,301

Grant Support and Individual Giving: $34,156

Great Conversations: $18,655

Total Tuition Assistance: $61,112

Great Conversations

Great Conversations is our biennial fundraising event where guests come together to enjoy great food, great company and great conversations – all in support of a great cause, the SCM Tuition Assistance Program. For the safety of our community, the 2020 event was canceled. We sincerely thank our wouldbe guests who so generously redirected their ticket purchases and underwriting support to gifts.

THE POWER OF Community

PARENT SERVICE ORGANIZATION (PSO)

The PSO began the 2019-2020 school year in full force. The New Parent Welcome Committee hosted two playdates to welcome new families to the school, and held monthly playdates throughout the fall on the SCM soccer field for all AM children. Friends of the Atrium hosted weekly Christian meditation and monthly Rosary sessions, along with producing its newsletter to highlight a different Doctor of the Church each month. Friends of the Garden gathered weekly to help our school naturalist maintain the extensive campus gardens, and it hosted a fall garden day in October to prepare the school’s beloved orchard for winter. Likewise, Friends of the Library kept the library shelves prepared for all the students’ research and reading needs, as well as checking in Primary library books every week. Friends of the Library also hosted a very successful Scholastic Book Fair, earning Scholastic credit for the school to spend on new books.

In October, we hosted the annual PSO Fall Fest, providing our community the opportunity to gather together for a delicious potluck meal, good conversation, and outdoor play for the children. In December, we sponsored the annual pajama drive to provide pajamas, socks, and underwear for over 100 children supported by Casa de Esperanza. Just before everyone scattered for Christmas Break, we hosted the annual Faculty and Staff Appreciation Luncheon, providing a delicious catered lunch (and even massages!) to show our immense gratitude for everything the faculty and staff do for our children every day. These are just a few of the many ways parents volunteered their time to support St. Catherine’s through the PSO.

Then, in March, everything came to an abrupt halt as campus closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As families adjusted to school at home and social distancing, the PSO chairs and committees worked to find new and different ways to bring the SCM community together. Our Spring Fling chair did an amazing job putting together a virtual event, complete with music, food ideas, and fun spring activities! The PSO Book Club continued to meet, just moving to Zoom for the final two books of the year. Friends of the Atrium helped the school catechist cut wood to make miniature altars for First Communicant gifts. Additionally, the summer school supply drive for Casa de Esperanza was re-envisioned to gather supplies for the children in a safe, socially distant way.

I appreciate how many parents stepped up to help the PSO continue to live out its mission of building community through family involvement and service even amidst the substantial challenges brought on by the pandemic. It is such a blessing to be a part of this wonderful, caring, supportive St. Catherine’s community!
