Coming to College is all about your future career aims. As a Gazelle College our courses are designed to give you the skills and qualifications that employers are looking for, so whatever career path you decide to follow, you can be guaranteed that you will leave College with the essential skills needed out there in the real world of work.

Ready for work We want to make sure that what you learn at College is relevant when you go out into the workplace – that is why local employers have an input into how our courses are designed.

We also make sure you have access to valuable work placements and experiences to boost your knowledge, your CV – and your confidence.

Employability centre – theworkspace With a wide range of activities focussed on ensuring you gain the skills that employers want, theworkspace provides FREE: • employer lectures, giving you an insight into particular jobs • workshops on CV writing and presentation skills • industry visits and tours.

Enterprising students We offer our students the chance to engage in activities to improve their knowledge and develop the skills and characteristics needed to be successful in self-employment.

Recruitment service The College aims to support its students into full-time and part-time employment and has its very own recruitment service, which offers a one-stop shop for students seeking employment, either during or at the end of their studies.

College students are able to register with the service, from day one of their time with us, and will also receive support and assistance with CV writing, interview techniques and job applications.

And it doesn’t end when you finish your course … you are still able to access the service up to two years after completing your studies with us!

Work experience As part of your Programme of Study you will undertake work experience which will give you the opportunity to gain the skills and experience that will allow you to stand out to potential employers as well as helping you choose the right sector to work in. For some subject areas, we’ve highlighted local employers that we work with.

Childcare If you are a parent, our outstanding nurseries will enable you to study knowing that your children (six months to school entry age) are being looked after in a stimulating and caring environment. Nurseries are located at both Kings Road and Goschen.

Learning resources To support your studies there are well-equipped libraries at each of the two main centres – Kings Road and Goschen.

Here you will find everything you need, including books, journals, newspapers and DVDs. Both have study spaces and computers with knowledgeable staff to help you. Thousands of resources such as e-books, e-journals and databases are also available 24/7 via the virtual library.

Learning support service We have a team of specialist Learning Support staff to help you if you have a disability, learning difficulty or health issue that could affect your studies, for example dyslexia or a hearing impairment. Choosing the Right Course

There are many different qualifications available at City College Plymouth. The one you choose will depend on the qualifications you already have, whether you prefer a practical or an academic route, what you want to do after your course and how you like to learn.

Programmes of Study All 16 to 18 year olds will enrol on a Programme of Study. These have been developed by the government as a new way to learn and to achieve the best you can in your career or studies.

Your programme will be made up of 600 hours per year and will include: • a substantial qualification at level 1, 2 or 3 • English and Maths GCSEs – if you didn’t achieve grades A*-C at school • other non-qualification activity such as tutorial time, study skills, work experience and help with applying for further courses or jobs.

Moving On Up The College offers courses at all levels, so no matter where you start, you will be able to progress until you reach your goal – whether you are hoping to go to university, find a job or start a business.

Student Life

We know that your main focus at College will be about getting good grades, but you also need to balance your hard work with having a good social life. Being a student is not just about learning – it’s about getting involved, enjoying yourself and making new friends.

The College has a calendar of events and activities running throughout the year to promote local and national issues, and to support you with your progression either on to employment, higher education or further courses. It also gives you a chance to get involved with what happens at your College, make the most of your free time, try something new and have some fun!

Student Liaison Team The Student Liaison team will make sure you enjoy your time at the College. The team provides support to ensure you remain on track and achieve your qualification. They ask students questions about what they want, listen to their feedback, and create a yearlong programme of enrichment activities – anything from circus skills and badminton, to Zumba and netball! We also have sports equipment and a fully equipped gym with qualified instructors who can tailor programmes to meet your fitness needs, and a College Sports Maker, funded by Sport England, whose job is to help organise various sporting activities and get you involved!

Students’ Union Becoming a student at the College means you have access to the Students’ Union (SU). The SU runs events and activities throughout the year to promote local and national issues. It also gives you a chance to get your views on the College heard through our ‘Student Voice’ initiatives, enjoy your free time and make some new friends!

Recognising Talent and Achievement

At the College we are keen to recognise the outstanding achievements of our students, and each year over 100 students are publicly rewarded through our Student of the Term scheme.

Lots of students are also put forward to regional and national competitions.

• Construction students gained seven awards at the 2014 South West heat of SkillBuild, which was held at the College.

Impressively, four City College students gained top accolades in bricklaying, cabinet making and joinery!

• Catering students beat off stiff competition to win seven gold, five silver and five bronze medals at the 2014 Major Series held in association with the Craft Guild of Chefs.

Your tutors will encourage you to show off your talents, and make sure you get the recognition you deserve!

Talent Ambition Programme Are you an ambitious, talented young person who’s looking for the chance to excel in your studies and future career? Then our new specialised programme could be for you!

The College’s Talent Ambition Programme (TAP) provides extra support to students who have an identified or emerging talent in their area of study, whatever it may be. The College runs Sports Academies in football and basketball so you can combine expert coaching and fitness conditioning with a full-time course. What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a practical, recognised training programme that you undertake whilst being an employee with a relevant business. Studying this way means you can earn a wage and get on-the-job training from your workplace – so Apprenticeships are a great way to gain a qualification and work experience at the same time.

Earn while you learn!

On average, apprentices earn around £170 per week – which, on top of all the other benefits, isn’t bad!

There are three different types of Apprenticeship; intermediate level, advanced level and higher level. More about them later!

You will also achieve Functional Skills qualifications in maths, English and ICT, and additional qualifications including a Technical Certificate relating to your subject area – all brilliant for boosting your CV!

How does it work?

You can expect to work between 30 and 40 hours per week (including time spent at the College) and be paid a wage.

You will be entitled to at least 20 days paid holiday each year. Most of your training will be in the workplace, but you may need to come into College for assessment, or on a dayrelease basis. The majority of apprentices spend four days a week with their employer, and one day at the College.

While you are an apprentice you will be visited regularly in your workplace by a member of College staff to keep you on the right track, and support you to complete your Apprenticeship programme.*

Get qualified!

During your Apprenticeship you will work towards an NVQ qualification. The type and level of qualification will depend on what type of Apprenticeship you are on.

A route to further study Apprenticeships offer a valuable route to university – NVQ diplomas are a great way to progress your education and improve employability because you can work your way up through the levels. Although much depends on the course and university you are hoping to join, an advanced level Apprenticeship is broadly considered equivalent to studying for A Levels.

The Benefits

• You will learn job-specific skills – everything you learn will be directly relevant to your chosen career.

• An Apprenticeship is great value for money.

• If you are under 19 years of age, the cost of your course is paid for by the government (through The National Apprenticeship Service) so you won’t need to pay a thing.

• If you are over 19, your Apprenticeship could be funded by yourself or your employer, or a mixture of both. You may also qualify for help towards the cost from The National Apprenticeship Service – depending on your age. Either way, costs are spread out over the course of your study – meaning you’ll finish your course debt-free!

• Apprentices finish their course with great job prospects. You will already have built-up a great relationship with your employer, have a couple of years’ industry experience under your belt – and a range of skills that employers are looking for.

How to Become an Apprentice An essential step in becoming an apprentice is finding a job – one that you enjoy and that you feel would make a good career choice. If you’re already in employment – great, you’ve got a head start, but if you don’t have a job yet, don’t worry. There are several ways to go about finding an employer to take you on as an apprentice.

1. Speak to the Work-based Learning team at the College.

They are in contact with huge numbers of employers across Devon and Cornwall, and may be able to match you to a job in your chosen industry. e: info@cityplym.ac.uk t: 01752 305300 2. Search for a vacancy online.

3. Approach an employer directly. If you have a clear career goal in mind, and know a business where you feel you have something to offer, why not approach them yourself?

Don’t let not having a job stop you from applying – it will get the ball rolling while you are looking.

Applying Complete the application form enclosed in this guide and return it to us using the freepost address on the top of the form.

• College staff will process your application and initial checks will be made to ensure you are eligible for an Apprenticeship.

• We will invite you in for some assessments to check that your numeracy, literacy and ICT skills are at the level required for your course, and to check that you are suitable for your chosen vocational area. If you meet the required standard and it is agreed that this is the right programme for you, you are ready for the next step!

The team from Work-based Learning will act on your behalf, putting you forward to employers.

Already found or in a job?

If you have already found an employer we will need to complete relevant health and safety checks and also ensure that the company will cover the relevant Apprenticeship programme criteria.

Doing it for real Apprenticeships

Joshua McCabe, 19, is a Fabrication and Welding Apprentice with Princess Yachts International plc.

Joshua said: “I’d heard really good things about Princess Yachts; that they were an excellent employer and really looked after and supported their apprentices. I decided to apply for an Apprenticeship with them as I thought, why not earn while I learn?!”

Joshua was one of the first students to be taken on

by Princess Yachts for the Fabrication and Welding Apprenticeship. He has excelled in his chosen profession and has already taken part and won both the WorldSkills regional final for construction metalwork and advanced sheet metalwork.

Katie Brown, 19, is an apprentice employed by the Plymouth Apprenticeship Company Ltd. The Company is an Apprenticeship training agency set up by Plymouth City Council and City College Plymouth to support the growth of smaller businesses and help young people into sustainable employment.

Katie is currently working at Nazareth House, Plymouth, which is operated by the Catholic Congregation Sisters of Nazareth, offering vulnerable people a secure and healthy residence in which they feel respected and comfortable on a daily basis.

Joshua continued: “Winning and taking part in both these competitions has been fantastic. It gave me the opportunity to put my skills to the test against other very skilled apprentices. All of the competitors worked really hard in both events and enjoyed the challenge.

“The lecturers at the College are particularly outstanding in their field which has provided me with a high level of expertise which I have been able to take to the workplace.

This has helped me immensely with my Apprenticeship at Princess Yachts.”

Joshua will be finishing his Advanced Apprenticeship in two years and is hoping to gain full-time employment with Princess Yachts.

Katie said “I love working at Nazareth House and have never worked anywhere like it. I came to my interview with blue hair and was seriously wondering if they would see past this and take a chance on giving me an Apprenticeship but thankfully they did!”

Katie plans to stay at Nazareth House until the end of her Apprenticeship and hopes that they may consider giving her permanent employment in the future.

What do I need to get on the course?

As well as coming in for an interview, you will need to have the following: • at least five grade Cs at GCSE, including English and maths • a grade B in maths, science, history and English to study these subjects at A Level.

Please note: offers are made subject to obtaining GCSE grades which, against national averages, indicate you would obtain at least the lowest pass grades for your chosen subjects.

GCSE Full-time Programme 2 1 year GCFT The College offers an intensive one-year, full-time programme of GCSEs with tutorial support. You can study up to six GCSEs from the following subjects: • maths • English • science • additional science • psychology • sociology • history • geography.

This programme will give you a broad range of qualifications, good foundations for further academic study and an opportunity to update previous qualifications and improve your grades.

Courses

Choosing to study A Levels with the College’s A Level Academy will give you an experience that’s different to school. One of the misconceptions about the College is that you will be left alone – this is most definitely not the case! We will provide you with a very effective transition from school to university or employment and challenge you to do your best.

Based at Goschen, you’ll be studying in an environment that is supportive, focussed on success, will prepare you for university and present you with a whole new set of opportunities. Your future really does start here!

Ancillary Course Fee For some of our courses you will be required to pay a yearly ancillary course fee (a contribution towards the materials you will be supplied with) for books, equipment and any costs for course trips. The maximum fee you will be expected to pay is £20 per year.

A Levels

Biology 3 2 years ASFT Biologists work in the fields of medicine, food production, veterinary science and ecology, to name just a few, and the work they do is vital to us all. Their knowledge helps with big issues – from protecting endangered species to curing disease. The first year covers the basics of biology, including the diversity of living organisms. You will also study how some body systems work and how they might be affected by diseases such as asthma, TB, and cholera.

Business Studies 3 2 years ASFT Ever watched Dragons’ Den and wondered about running your own business? Then business studies may be just the subject for you! Business studies fits well with lots of other A Levels to create a solid base for a wide range of future careers. Combine business and maths for a role in accountancy or logistics, or add psychology for careers in advertising, management or human resources.

Chemistry 3 2 years ASFT Chemistry is an incredibly exciting subject. It’s at the heart of life itself and the basis for everything that surrounds us.

Our course will teach you the basic laboratory skills and give you a thorough grounding in the subject to stimulate your interest to discover more. You never know where this course could lead you! The future may see you eagerly taking up your place in a research team to push the frontiers of chemical knowledge.

English Language 3 2 years ASFT This subject will fire your enthusiasm for language! You’ll develop your ability to express yourself fluently, accurately and persuasively, in speech and writing, across different genres, and for a variety of audiences and purposes. In year one you will explore writing and speech, and how context affects language function.

Physics 3 2 years ASFT Physics is a HUGE subject – from the almost invisible to the universe itself. Physics will test your mind and your creativity in equal measure!

Access to Higher Education courses are specially designed to offer you a second chance to progress to higher education – university-level study – if you have not been in education for a few years.

At the end of these courses our students have commented on the support they have received from College tutors and their peers, as well as the knowledge they have gained and increased confidence in their own abilities.

An Access course will prepare you for studying at a higher education level by introducing you to university-level study skills. You will also develop your knowledge of your chosen discipline. As part of the course you will be guided through the process of choosing the most appropriate higher education course and institution, and supported to make your application. City College has good links with local universities, as well as some further afield.

There will be opportunities to hear from admissions tutors and visit local university open days.

Entry requirements for Access courses To succeed on an Access course you need to be committed towards your study and focussed on your career choice.

This route is designed for adult students (19+). Funding is not available for those aged 18 and under, and we would recommend that alternative vocational qualifications and A Levels are considered to support progression onto further or higher education and employment.

24+ Advanced Learning Loans If you are aged 24 or over you can apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to cover the fees for an Access to Higher Education course.

If you progress and complete a university-level (higher education) course, you will not have to pay back your 24+ Advanced Learning Loan!

Doing it for real Access to Higher Education

After her children left home and her husband retired, Nicci Wakeham decided to leave her job as a Finance Officer and work towards gaining a place at university to study a subject that she had only imagined would ever be a hobby – art history.

However, having left school at 16, she felt she was unprepared to apply to university immediately, both due to lack of qualifications and lack of confidence. Nicci therefore applied for a place at City College on an Access course.

Nicci said: “The application process was simple, with an interview and a short computer-based test, which was completed in a relaxed manner.

I was accepted immediately!”

Level 3 Business student, Michaela Merrifield, developed a keen interest in Business whilst at school, however didn’t pursue this as a career as she gained an Apprenticeship with a local nursery. After the birth of her daughter in 2012, Michaela decided that she wanted to change career and return to education to study business.

Matthew studied a BTEC National Diploma in Health and Social Care at the College in 2009.

He is currently at university studying youth and community work and in his spare time he volunteers at the College working with Health and Social Care students.

Matthew said: “When I finished my GCSEs I already knew that I wanted to study Health and Social Care. This was something that the school didn’t offer and I subsequently applied to the College.

Having been brought up in a small area like Ivybridge, it was great to get out of the town on a daily basis and travel into the City!”

After finishing his degree this year, Matthew will then begin studying for a PGCE and as part of this will be undertaking a work placement at the College.

Matthew continued: “I want to teach but still be working with young people and by teaching in the College I’ll have the chance to use my youth worker skills. Bricklaying 1 1 year DIB1 Want to work in the construction sector but not yet employed?

Then this is the course for you!

It is a hands-on course in a realistic environment that covers the theory and practice of bricklaying in our fully equipped workshops. You’ll learn how to build structures, handle and store resources, work as part of a team, prepare bricklaying materials and components, and on-site health and safety.

Building Services Engineering (Plumbing and Electrical Installation) 1 1 year FLPM Want a career in building services engineering but not sure which area to go into?

This course will give you a flavour of the skills involved in four different areas of building services engineering – plumbing, electrotechnical, heating and ventilating, and refrigeration and air conditioning. On our course you will learn all aspects of safety (because you will often be working at height), how to deal with hazardous wastes, the value of surface preparation, which paints and paint finishes to use, and which tools and techniques are appropriate.

Liam Roberts, 20, is a bricklaying apprentice at City College and has excelled in the skill since starting his Apprenticeship in 2012.

Before applying for the Apprenticeship, Liam had been actively looking for work and wasn’t really sure which direction he wanted to take.

Liam said: “I had been told by various people that an Apprenticeship was the best way to gain qualifications whilst being paid so I applied for one with Barratt Homes. I was delighted to have been accepted for this Apprenticeship and decided that I would put everything I had towards making it a success.”

Courses

Due to his high calibre bricklaying skills, Liam recently competed in the Regional Heat of SkillBuild 2014, the UK’s biggest construction skills competition, where he won gold in the senior category.

Liam continued: “There is a lot more to bricklaying than you’d think and the lecturers educate us in the actual skill as well as the theory, such as providing us with a thorough grounding in the health and safety aspects. The College has taught me how to proceed in my career and I would like to say a big thank you to them for helping me progress!”

Doing it for real Engineering, Automotive and Marine

Josh, 23, joined the College in 2008 on a catering course.

He soon realised, after completing his first year, that this wasn’t for him and decided to look for an alternative.

Josh said: “Catering just wasn’t my thing so I started to look for something else. I’ve always been interested in cars; my Dad used to be a mobile mechanic and I’d quite often watch him work. I thought the Vehicle Maintenance course looked ideal and felt it was something that I would be really interested in.”

The College supported Josh with his decision and he successfully enrolled on the Level 2 Vehicle Maintenance course. Over the next two years, he gained employment, completed an NVQ level 2 and a level 3 advanced diploma.

Courses

Josh said of the course: “The tutors’ level of experience was second-to-none. Being on a full-time course you don’t get to experience and appreciate what the garage environment is all about, but the tutors have such indepth industry knowledge. They give you a certain level of understanding of what it’s like in the workplace.”

After completing his studies at the College, Josh gained full-time employment with a local garage in Plymstock. He then went on to work for Volkswagen in 2012, as a Service Technician.

Whilst at Volkswagen, Josh trained as a Mastertech Technician, which involved diagnosing, repairing and customer service. He returned to the College in September 2013 as a part-time instructor assessor teaching 14 to 16 year olds.

Doing it for real Tamsin Bryant Tamsin started to study Beauty Therapy as she was offered a job as a level 2 apprentice in her local salon.

As an apprentice, she worked full-time – 37 hours a week – which included Saturdays and one day a week at the College.

She completed level 2 and is now employed in Stars Hair & Day Spa at City College Plymouth as a level 3 apprentice in Beauty Therapy.

Hairdressing for Cutting and Styling Technicians 3 1 year DHCF This course is the ideal progression route for those who have completed the level 2 in hairdressing. Georgia, 18, joined the College in 2012 to study a Diploma in Food Production and Cooking. She is now running her own bakery in Plymouth.

Georgia said: “I always knew, from a young age, that I would like to finally end up working in the catering industry. I used to bake with my Nan when I was young and I had a real passion for it!”

Whist at school Georgia had a Saturday job in a local bakery. On finishing her GCSEs her employer agreed to take her on as an apprentice.

Georgia said: “I was so scared when I came to College, but my lecturer was fantastic and really helped me through those fears. She was not only fantastic in her teaching skills but she also helped me on a personal level.”

One20 Media supports the studies of media students and is designed to give you the opportunity to increase your employability skills through hands-on experience working in the media industry.

Recently, our games development students worked with Tamar Foods in Cornwall to develop an interactive induction video, and media students produced a radio advert for a College event!

Software Development 5 2 years UF3366 Software development plays a vital role in the IT industry. If you want to thrive in this industry you need to be very detailoriented, be able to combine your logical thinking with the ability to focus for long periods, and have a positive, can-do attitude. On our foundation degree we will help you perfect your mastery of these skills and develop your ability to analyse, program and project manage software solutions.

Case Study

Former IT student, Ross Evans, works for the multinational semiconductor chip maker, Intel Corporation. After completing GCSEs, Ross joined his school sixth form to study AS Levels.

However, he soon realised this was not for him.

Ross said: “At the point of taking my AS Levels I wanted to become a veterinarian; however I soon discovered that I was not enjoying the academic side to it! I have always had a keen interest in electronics and computers so decided to focus my studies within this area. I was accepted on to the IT Practitioner course at City College and so my journey began into the technical world!

“I had a great time at the College, there was a lot more freedom and I was treated more like an individual. The lecturers were very enthusiastic and knowledgeable, with nothing ever too much trouble.”

Game Design and Production 5 2 years UF5078 In much the same way the games industry requires collaborative working across sectors, you will work with students from other disciplines, such as business and marketing, in order to promote their product in the marketplace. You’ll also work with industry professionals in order to forge links with those active in the growing indie developer sector. At the end of this foundation degree you are expected to have designed and produced a game product for release into the marketplace.

Audio and Music Production 5 2 years MPF Based at dBs Music’s multimillion pound recording complex in the city centre, this foundation degree focuses on the technical and creative skills required to become a successful music producer and sound engineer. You’ll study both the artistic and scientific elements associated with professional sound recording and production, and develop skills in sound engineering and production methodologies.

Live Sound 5 2 years LSF Working in the highly competitive live sound music production industry requires persistence and single-mindedness! These courses ensure you have English, maths and ICT skills alongside improved confidence and motivation, and support you into further education, Apprenticeships and work. We’ve seen many of our students blossom while they are studying on these courses, and go on to achieve their full potential. All our students get the chance to work towards nationally recognised qualifications to build up their CVs.

Martin added: “I saw the course advertised and realised that it could help me gain maths and English qualifications, get into employment, as well as improving my confidence and self-esteem.

Martin Gammon Doing it for real

For Martin Gammon, 18, the Pre-Apprenticeship and Employment Programme was the ideal course!

Martin said: “I had a really bad time at school; I have dyslexia and dyspraxia and had no support at all. I left school with very few qualifications and a lack of self-esteem.”

The course offers a whole range of qualifications, skills and experiences, including access to nationally recognised qualifications, work experience with employers, functional skills in English and maths, and outward bound activities.

“The support I got from the College was fantastic – the staff really put me at ease and helped me gain more confidence. Not only did they help me with my literacy and numeracy, they took us on job search activities where we got to talk to employers and got useful information about how to apply, how to write a CV and what to do in an interview.”

For now, Martin is concentrating on applying for courses at the College and using all the skills he has learnt on the course to apply for a part-time job to support his studies.

Preparation for Life and Work

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Entry Up to 1 year ESOLFT This course is for 16 to 19 year olds who want to improve their English to get ready for work in the UK, an Apprenticeship, or a further College course. It combines the core programme of English for Speakers of Other Languages with maths, IT, employability skills, work experience and personal social development. You may also have the chance to follow the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme as part of this course.

Pre-Apprenticeship and Employment Programme Entry/1 Up to 12 weeks PTE6 This course aims to help those who are not ready or able to directly enter an Apprenticeship programme, further education or employment. The course includes community-based projects, enterprise projects, personal and social development, vocational training, work placements and functional skills (maths, English and IT).

Prince’s Trust Team Programme Entry/1/2 12 weeks PVT13 This award-winning course will help improve your confidence, problem solving skills and teach you how to work as part of a team – whilst, quite probably, having the time of your life! You will gain nationally recognised qualifications and the skills to progress into work-based learning programmes, an Apprenticeship or employment.

In addition to the 12 weeks, support will be given to develop your maths and English skills and prepare you for your next steps.

Skills Development (Work Start) Entry 1 year SDH1 Getting a job can be a very frustrating journey. This course will help you all the way. You will get the opportunity to access a variety of work environments in order to develop your skills. You will also have constant access to a work coach who will help you to extend your capabilities in the workplace.

Futures 1st E/1/2 Roll-on, roll-off ESFNRA This flexible course is aimed at 16 to 24 year olds. It ranges from one to three days per week depending on the needs of the individual. Futures 1st will develop a programme around you in order to improve your employability skills through enterprise projects, work tasters, personal development activities and support with maths and English.

Traineeships 1/2 Up to 6 months TSHIP This course aims to provide an innovative approach to help get young people back into education, employment or training. Your Traineeship will be developed in partnership with an employer. They will provide a high quality work placement for you to develop employability skills across a range of sectors.

Will Smart, 22, is a Support Worker at George House, who says his time at City College has helped him with his career and got him to where he is today.

“I didn’t want to stay at school as I wanted to do a course that would help me get a job and that would offer me more freedom than a school sixth form.

“I have always had a dream to work in the Police Force or Customs and Excise so enrolled on a public services course as it would help me with my career ambitions, and the practical elements included lots of sport and physical activities.”

Medical Science 3 2 years NDMSD If you have always imagined you would enjoy a career in the realm of medical sciences then take a look at our course. This practical and work-based programme introduces you to a wide range of topics in the biological and medical sciences, as well as specialist subjects such as human physiology and genetic engineering. You will learn how to identify conditions using physiological investigations, understand how diseases spread and carry out some microbiology to investigate the organisms that cause disease.

Forensic Science 5 2 years UF3372 Forensic science is one of the most fascinating areas of applied science – the use of scientific procedures to produce evidence in a court of law. This foundation degree provides the knowledge and skills appropriate to an increasingly important area of science. It covers the major scientific disciplines involved in the investigation of crime.

You will study in the College’s specialist forensic science laboratories using modern forensic equipment, and put your skills to practice in our mock crime scene ‘house’.

Camilla Dodgson joined the Foundation Degree in Forensic Science in 2009 after completing an evening course in the same subject.

Camilla said: “The College has fantastic facilities, such as the laboratories and the small crime scene house on-site is just amazing. The lecturers were very helpful at all times. Whenever we needed help we would knock on their office door and they would always take time to explain things to us. The level of teaching was also fantastic, balancing both the practical and theory aspects of the course.”

After graduating in 2012 with a distinction, Camilla secured her dream job as a Volume Crime Scene Investigator (VCSI) with Wiltshire Police Force, whilst undertaking training at the College of Policing in Durham where she will complete stage one of the crime scene investigator course.

Camilla continued: “Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the course and completed it with a good level of understanding and knowledge of forensic science, which I used together with other employment and life experience, enabling me to apply for and get a job as a VCSI. If you’re an active person who enjoys sport there is a vast range of careers available to you – from being a gym instructor, personal trainer or even a strength and conditioning coach, to becoming a specialised sports coach or working in sports development. Alternatively, you could become a sports commentator or journalist, or involved with the organising and running of sporting events, on a local or national scale.

The College’s sports offer will promote individual active health and wellbeing of the community, through exercise, fitness and sport. You will regularly take part in fitness sessions, games and coaching tasks, and have

the opportunity to represent the College in sporting events. City College students have been involved with running school sports activities at the College and also at Brickfields Sports Centre in Plymouth.

The College runs a successful Football Performance Academy in conjunction with Plymouth Argyle Football Club and, for budding basketball players, the College has launched the Plymouth Raiders Elite Performance Academy.

Sports Therapy 5 2 years UF2691 Injuries are an unwelcome yet somewhat inevitable aspect of professional and competitive sport. Accredited by the Sports Therapy Organisation, our foundation degree helps you develop the practical skills and knowledge to confidently succeed in all areas of injury management and athlete care.

You will develop extensive knowledge of injury assessment, injury aetiology, human anatomy and physiology, functional movement screening, sports nutrition, injury prevention training and rehabilitation programme design. You will practice and develop your expanding skills through our supervised student-led sports injury clinic where you will have access to a range of athletes and sports injuries.

Strength Conditioning and Sports Coaching 5 2 years UF3593 Do you have an interest or background in working with elite athletes? This foundation degree will give you the opportunity to develop practical skills and knowledge in the most effective methods of training athletes for elite level performance. Whilst you will study underpinning science related sports topics such as physiology, biomechanics and human movement, you will also develop practical skills in coaching effectiveness, Olympic weightlifting, speed, agility and plyometrics, and other athletic testing and monitoring skills.

From a very early age Kerrie Spear, 23, had a passion for fitness and sport.

Kerrie said: “I didn’t fancy staying on in sixth form at school, as I knew exactly what I wanted to do.

The BTEC course the College offered was ideal as it was very practical in its nature and I learn better by actually doing it for real, rather than learning about it from a text book!

“The course involved a lot of teaching and coaching, which really helped with my confidence and communication skills.”

Kerrie successfully passed the BTEC and progressed to the Foundation Degree in Sports Therapy at the College.

Courses

Kerrie continued: “The Foundation Degree was really hands-on, however we did need to learn the theory behind the practice, such as human anatomy and sports nutrition, to back up what we were doing. We learnt about the more traditional forms of sports therapy, which was really interesting as I was then able to compare these with the more modern techniques I learnt in my third year at university.”

After completing the Foundation Degree, Kerrie went on to complete a BSc at the University of St Mark & St John and came away with the necessary qualifications for a career in the sports industry.

Kerrie is currently employed as a Fitness Consultant and Sports Therapist at the China Fleet Golf and Country Club in Saltash.

Stacey, 20, studied a BTEC National Diploma in Travel and Tourism at the College and is currently working in Tenerife with Monarch airlines, before she returns to university in September.

Stacey said: “I can honestly say that joining the College was one the best decisions I’ve ever made!

Without City College I would never have had the confidence to take a job like this or make it to university. I enjoyed my time there so much. There was always something to look forward to, whether it was the trips or the lessons and I made some amazing friends that I still speak to almost every day!”

Stacey achieved distinctions in all of her modules and after finishing the course she went on to the University of the West of England in Bristol where she is studying for a BA in Tourism Management.

During her summer break, Stacey was offered a temporary role by Monarch airlines as an Airport Customer Experience Host in Tenerife.

Stacey still has three more years at university before she’d like to gain full-time employment in a travel and tourism company’s marketing and PR team.

When to Apply

We recommend that you apply for your chosen course as early as possible. Ideally you should apply before Easter to ensure confirmation of a place on your chosen course. We do, however, accept applications after this time, but please note places are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Places on full-time courses for those aged 19+ are limited, and will be allocated in accordance with the guidelines set by the government funding agency.

You can apply for more than one course. If you are accepted on two or more courses please inform us of your final choice as soon as possible so that we can then offer unwanted places to other applicants.

If you are applying for an Apprenticeship, we recommend you also apply for a full-time course in your chosen area of interest, just in case you are unable to find a suitable employer.

As a parent we know that you will want your son or daughter to make the right decisions about their future. Now that young people are required to stay in education and training until they are 17 years old (18 from 2015) it is important that you are aware of all the opportunities available to them. Young people have choices: these include going to College or doing an Apprenticeship – they do not have to stay at school.

Let’s explode some of the myths that currently surround post-16 education …

1. Young people do not have to stay at school until they achieve a GCSE grade C in both English and maths – they can retake these alongside a higher level course or try Functional Skills (equivalent qualifications in practical English and maths skills).

2. Young people can apply for an Apprenticeship even if they do not achieve a GCSE grade C in English and maths – as part of their day release they will study Functional Skills if they haven’t achieved a GCSE grade C, these are practical maths and English skills relevant to their Apprenticeship.

3. If young people choose a National Diploma they can go on to study a universitylevel course – for specific Degree and Foundation Degree entry requirements please see the UCAS website (www.ucas.com).

Outside the classroom There’s a whole lot more to life at City College Plymouth than simply studying. We want your son or daughter to get the most out of their free time, so we offer a diverse programme of social, cultural and sporting activities and enrichment that will give them an exceptional experience.

Support at Every Step

There are a number of ways that the College ensures your son or daughter receives all the educational and personal support they will need to complete their studies.

Personal tutors Each student on a full-time or substantial part-time (over 150 guided learning hours) course is assigned a personal tutor. The tutor is normally a member of the course teaching team. The personal tutor is there to offer help and support with all matters relating to the student’s studies.

They are also responsible for monitoring the student’s progress with them.

We encourage parents and carers to meet with the personal tutors, and to keep in contact.

Tutorial programme All full-time students will have: • a regular individual personal and academic review with their tutor to ensure that they are on track to achieve their qualification and have planned their next steps • RAD (review and development) weeks take place each term to focus on course concerns, self development, the progression of the student after College (including, where appropriate, university entry procedures) and equal opportunities awareness.

Extra help in the classroom The College is committed to helping all students by giving them support to be successful on their chosen course of study.

Support at Every Step

Moving on up The College offers courses at all levels to enable your son or daughter to progress and achieve the highest qualification they need to meet their goals.

Being able to take students right up to university level study – and beyond – is one of the key differences between the College and school. It allows strong relationships to form, and the range of ages at both our main sites creates a mature learning environment.

Before students join the College, careers staff will give advice on the appropriate level of qualification for them, and when at College, will discuss progression onto higher level qualifications.

Welfare The College has a team of Student Liaison Support Workers whose role is to provide informal support to students who are struggling with their course for whatever reason.

They work with personal tutors and other College staff to identify students who need help.

They then work on a one-to-one basis in whatever way helps the students to improve their attendance, enjoy College life and bring them back on track.

Support includes: • texting students to remind them of course deadline dates • accessing Discretionary Learner Support funding to help with travel costs • supporting students to help them complete coursework • one-to-one support and advice • running team relationship building sessions • drop-in sessions for young carers or young parents.

Safeguarding and being safe at College The College takes its responsibilities for the safety and well-being of its students very seriously. There is a designated and specially trained Safeguarding team who will support and advise students, and staff, in all aspects of ‘being safe’ at College.

All students are issued with an orange College lanyard and ID card holder to ensure they are easily identifiable as a student whilst on College premises.

Parents

Safeguarding incorporates a range of matters including health and safety (including e-safety), protection from abuse or exploitation, anti-bullying (including cyber-bullying) and associated matters. The College is an active member of the Plymouth Safeguarding Children Board, and works with other agencies to ensure that our students are safe at College. the College may not be able to provide the level of support that would best help.

Costs and Funding

There are lots of different sources of funding to help your son or daughter cover the costs of studying. There are funds available for books and essential equipment for their course, travel, childcare costs or emergency hardship, plus a FREE breakfast club and meal scheme.

Our Student Funding team provides information, advice and guidance about the range of funds on offer. They can help with: • sources of financial support, and applying for these • travel options and funding • childcare provision and funding • emergency hardship • meal support.

Course costs If your son or daughter is aged between 16 and 18 and chooses to study a full-time course funded by the Skills Funding Agency, there are no tuition fees*.

Students aged between 19 and 23 studying for their first full level 2 qualification (equivalent to five GCSEs at grades A to C) may be entitled to tuition fee remission*.

Students aged between 19 and 23 and studying for their first full level 3 qualification (equivalent to two A Levels) may be entitled to tuition fee remission*.

Students aged 24 and over who are undertaking a full level 3 or 4 qualification may be eligible to apply for the new 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to cover the cost of tuition fees.

However, there are other course costs that all students will have to pay. For example, ancillary course costs (a contribution towards the materials they will be supplied with), books, equipment and any costs for course trips.

Travel There are a number of travel options available to full-time students. Students who live within three miles of the College site are able to access the free College bus (Citybus 36, 21 and 21A services), which run between the city centre, Kings Road and Goschen. Students further away may be eligible for an annual subsidised bus pass in conjunction with various local bus companies (subject to home address and household income).

Devon students, mainly from the Ivybridge, Kingsbridge or Tavistock areas, will be able to buy a subsidised annual pass costing £300** that can be used on a number of public bus services run by Stagecoach.

Students from Cornwall, mainly from the Looe, Liskeard and Launceston areas, can buy a subsidised annual bus pass costing £300** that can be used on the Western Greyhound bus route from your home address to Plymouth.

Keeping You Informed

We aim to ensure that parents and carers receive full information about the course, College support and your son or daughter’s progress, if they are under the age of 18 at the start of their course. We will also be actively encouraging your involvement.

If a student is over the age of 18 at enrolment, the College needs their permission to discuss issues regarding their studies with you.

You are able to make appointments to see College staff to discuss your son or daughter’s progress at any time, but particularly if you have concerns.

Progress reports Each student will have their own Individual Learning Plan, which their tutor uses to record progress and targets. This is used to help the tutors write a report on each student’s progress twice a year. Parents and carers of those students aged 18 or under will be invited to parent sessions throughout the year to discuss the progress report.

Attendance Regular attendance is key to success. Students are required to attend every lesson, unless they are ill or there is some other genuine reason. The College has a system in place so that if a student’s academic work is slipping or they are not attending, parents and carers of students under the age of 18 (on 1 September each year) will be informed.

Students are expected to attend regularly, and if a student is not able to attend, for whatever reason, they are expected to let the College know in advance.

A register is taken at every class and any absences will be followed up by the course tutor.

It is worth pointing out that some financial support schemes are based on 100% attendance.

Qualifications Explained

GCSEs We offer GCSEs in English and maths for those who didn’t achieve a grade C at school.

These will be studied alongside the student’s chosen course. The College also offers a one-year, intensive full-time programme consisting of up to six GCSEs, academic development and tutorial support. It gives a broad range of qualifications, good foundations for further academic study and an opportunity to update previous qualifications and improve GCSE grades.

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) NVQs are work-related qualifications which apply the practical skills and knowledge learnt at College, directly into the workplace. They can be studied full-time at the College or part-time while in a job, work placement or on an Apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships For students who would prefer to follow a work-based route, there is a choice between an Apprenticeship (level 2), an Advanced Apprenticeship (level 3) or a Higher Apprenticeship (level 4). Apprentices are employed and receive a wage whilst training with an employer.

A Levels (AS and A2 Levels) The first year of an A Level is a stand-alone qualification called an AS Level. The AS Level can be topped up with a further years’ study to a full A Level (also referred to as an A2). City College Plymouth is one of the largest providers of A Levels in the area, offering them on one site and either as a programme of A Levels or combined with a choice of vocational options.

BTEC Subsidiary and Extended Diplomas These are two-year vocational qualifications which blend practical, career focussed skills and academic study to prepare young people for direct entry into employment or for entry onto university-level courses (higher education). Students will study for a subsidiary diploma in year one and then continue on to the extended diploma in the second year.

Level 1 and 2 Certificates and Diplomas These are one-year courses which allow students to progress either into employment or onto higher level study. All our level 1 and 2 qualifications have progression routes onto the next level of study (subject to satisfactory performance). For many students these courses offer an ideal opportunity to develop their skills, learning in a more hands-on way and improving their future career prospects.

Level 3 Diplomas These are two-year vocational qualifications which prepare students for direct entry into employment or enable them to move on to higher education (such as a university-level course). Some diplomas consist of more than one qualification and many offer additional related qualifications to support applications to work or university following on from the course.

Higher National Certificates These are higher-level qualifications which relate to a particular employment sector, and tend to be equivalent to the first and/or second stage of a degree. They are for students who are aged over 18 and have successfully completed an A Level, extended diploma or other advanced level course (level 3).

Foundation Degrees These are industry-related higher education qualifications equivalent to the first and second stage of a degree, developed by the College with employers.

They are designed to include workplace experience, learning and assessment, whilst also providing a route for progression to the final year of a named honours degree at specified universities or into employment.

Functional skills Functional skills are a suite of qualifications for maths, English and information communication technology (ICT), and are very popular with employers. If students develop their skills in numeracy, communication and ICT they are more likely to achieve their main qualification and be successful when they progress to the next level or into employment.
