Our enthusiastic and hardworking tutors enjoy their subjects and have chosen to work here at the College because of its close-knit, all-inclusive and friendly approach. Our College is also one of the largest providers of students to the University of Plymouth. Between 65-70% of our foundation degree students go on to study their top-up honours degree at the University.

Where we are We have two main sites - at Kings Road in Devonport and the Goschen Centre in Keyham - both sites are within easy reach of the city centre and the University of Plymouth. There are regular free bus links between the centres, the train station, the city centre, and the University. Our College dates back to 1887 where it was a school of science and art. It became a College of Further Education in 1969 and rebranded in 2007 to become City College Plymouth.

Resources for study The College has excellent resources for learning with libraries at our Kings Road and Goschen centres, and computer facilities at all sites. The Learning Resources Service and its facilities are available to help you with your studies at the College. There is also a dedicated and fully equipped centre for higher education

students. The centre, which was funded by the Higher Education Learning Partnerships Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at the University of Plymouth, features lecture theatres, a computer suite, two seminar rooms and a student common room equipped with a plasma screen television.

Going green Going green, reducing the College’s carbon footprint and aiming to become more sustainable, are all part of the College’s commitment to the environment. The College works hard to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and closely monitors and manages the amount of energy and water different sites consume. Students and staff are encouraged to walk or cycle to work and a free shuttle bus is provided by the College to help everyone commute between sites. The College is proud to be a ‘Fairtrade College’ and through its Fairtrade Policy, educates people on the benefits as well as supporting the campaign by selling Fairtrade items in catering outlets. We use sustainability sourced ‘Forest Stewardship Council’ (FSC) certified paper and recycled paper products for printing all of our publications including this directory! 7

Fantastic industry standard facilities Studying at City College Plymouth means you have access to our industry standard facilities. Join one of our hospitality and catering courses and you will train in professionally equipped kitchens, and our fully refurbished modern restaurant and brasseriĂŠ. As an engineering student you will get the chance to work in our fully equipped engineering workshop and working garage. The College has recently opened Pure Hair & Day Spa - a state-of-the-art salon offering our students the highest quality of teaching and learning alongside the latest treatments in hairdressing, beauty and spa therapy.

Local employers have an input into how our courses are developed and many of the companies we engage with recruit our students after successful completion of their course. University facilities As the College is one of the University of Plymouth’s Partner Colleges and is situated just a mile away, our students benefit from using their facilities, such as the Charles Seale-Hayne Library (see picture, left) and the University of Plymouth Students’ Union. A regular free shuttle bus runs between the College and the city centre, passing the University.

Get qualified at your own pace Our university-level courses have been designed to give you the precise knowledge, skills and competencies you’ll need to achieve your qualification. As we offer full and part-time options, you’ll be able to start your dream job, achieve that next promotion at work, or join the university course you want in your own time and at your own pace. There are also a range of flexible opportunities through university short courses and certificate of professional development (CPD) awards available for employers and their employees. Entry to access a better education

Accessible higher education study at the College also means that you can opt to live at home. If you need to save money or you are supporting a family and/or you are working, then this may be the best option for you, especially given our affordable fees. However, if you would like assistance with finding somewhere to live, see page 93 for details on student accommodation.

The University of Plymouth University of Plymouth Colleges (UPC) City College Plymouth is one of the largest Partner Colleges within the University of Plymouth Colleges (UPC) - a Faculty of the University of Plymouth. Consistently ranked one of the top modern universities in the UK, the University of Plymouth has a strong record of excellence, enterprise and innovation across its teaching and research activities, and is distinguished by its long-term

engagement with employers. The University is one of the largest in the country, with around 30,000 students, of which a third are studying at its Partner Colleges via UPC. UPC is nationally recognised as one of the largest, longest established and best-developed Partner College networks in the country and brings university-level education to students across the South West peninsula and the Channel Islands, via a network of 18 partner institutions.

The majority of City College Plymouthâ€™s higher education courses are approved by the University of Plymouth and, therefore, students graduate with a University of Plymouth award.

Most UPC foundation degrees have an articulated progression route to one or more honours degrees. These are often one-year ‘top-up’ courses available at the University of Plymouth, or in some cases, another Partner College or university. Please note there is a deadline for progression applications and places may be subject to availability. In terms of academic study, all UPC students have the same rights and status as other University of Plymouth students. You will benefit from the services that the College can provide as well as the additional support and resources provided by the University. All UPC students are entitled to use the University’s Charles Seale-Hayne Library, access electronic resources and learning support materials (via the web-based student portal), take advantage of automatic membership to the University of Plymouth Students’ Union, join its gym, clubs and societies, and through the College gain assistance from the University’s support and advice resources (such as its Careers and Employability Service, Disability ASSIST Services and the International Student Advisory Service). 11

Is famous for its maritime history and has one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world. Sir Francis Drake sailed into battle against the Spanish Armada in 1588 and in 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers set sail to the New World of America.

Has an historic harbour area called The Barbican which has 16th century buildings, craft shops, outdoor cafés and bars. Plymouth Hoe is the city’s waterfront where you can enjoy amazing views across the natural harbour (Plymouth Sound), walk, ride bikes, or simply sit and enjoy the magnificent views!

If you are interested in sport, Plymouth has much to offer, especially watersports including sailing, windsurfing, scuba diving, gig rowing, water skiing, kayaking, surfing and jet skiing. If you donâ€™t have any formal qualifications then consider our Access courses. The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a brilliant way to help you get into university. The course, once completed, is valid for three years so you can either go right ahead and apply for a university course, or you can take a year out to gain relevant work experience to support your HE application. They can also be used for personal development or to prepare you for work. They will help you to get to grips with the level of study and motivation you will need to succeed in higher education.

Our Return to Learn course will refresh your existing skills and teach you how to plan and manage your learning. Access to Higher Education Courses What do I need to get on an Access course?

Combined Studies

There are no formal entry qualifications required, although you will be interviewed and will need to undertake an initial assessment to ensure that you have the underpinning skills to enable you to begin the course. Please check our website for the specific entry requirements for the subjects you are interested in (www.cityplym.ac.uk).

This course aims to give an insight into various subject disciplines. You can choose from psychology, sociology, history, English literature and human biology. Study skills, maths and English will also be covered. Course code: AAC

Nursing Professions This area of study aims to prepare you for application to degree-level nurse, midwifery or health-related education. You will study health studies, sociology and human biology, alongside GCSE equivalent maths and English, and study skills. Course code: CAN

Science

How will I be assessed?

Direct entry to degree programmes in biological or environmental sciences, ecology, geology, and chemistry is usual with this qualification. It is also appropriate for entry into health professions such as physiotherapy, radiography, dietetics and podiatry. You will study biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, laboratory skills, study skills and basic IT.

Assessment is via assignments and coursework, with an examination in some subjects.

What next? Successful completion of an Access to Higher Education course means you will be eligible to apply for a place at university within the next three years, where you can study all sorts of different subjects or pursue a vocational course.

Social Care Professions This course focuses on future training or employment within the social care field. You will study sociology, human biology, psychology, social care and key skills. What’s it all about?

How will I be assessed?

This course aims to prepare overseas students for entry to university in the United Kingdom. Two subject pathways are available: business (if you are planning to study business-related courses at university) and technology and computing (if you are planning to study engineering and IT-related courses at university).

Your assessment will include coursework and end of year examinations, moderated by external examiners.

What do I need to get on the course? You should be a foreign national and have gained school leaving qualifications equivalent to five GCSEs at grade C or above including maths and English (or IELTS 5.0 instead of GCSE English). Mature students’ experience can be considered.

What next? On successful completion of this course you will have a guaranteed place on a foundation degree at the College, or on an appropriate degree at the University of Plymouth. Students can apply to other universities through the UCAS procedure. This course is also suitable to prepare for postgraduate study.

What does the course involve? Business pathway: • understanding business • introduction to accounting and finance • business law. Technology and computing pathway: • introduction to engineering technology • technological applications of science • introduction to computer science. You will also study academic English, numeracy, study skills and IT. The subjects are taught at A level standard.

Foundation degrees are two-year degree-level courses (when studied full-time) which are broadly equivalent to studying for the first two years of an honours degree at university. They are carefully designed and developed in collaboration with employers, and offer you the opportunity to combine academic study with the skills and attributes needed in the workplace. Many of our foundation degree courses are also offered on a part-time basis. Studying for a foundation degree on a part-time basis can provide greater ﬂexibility and the opportunity to carry on with work whilst you study. Some employers will fund the course fees and provide time to study where the course is considered of relevance for their business. Many of our part-time foundation degrees are offered on an intensive two-year basis, while others are over three years. When you complete one of our courses and graduate with a University of Plymouth award, you will have the appropriate training and skills needed for success in industry and business; many also include professional qualifications. What’s it all about?

What next?

Knowledge of accounting and finance is an essential and useful business skill, both for those wishing to merely understand the function, and those wishing to progress to professional status. On this foundation degree you will have the opportunity to learn how to prepare and analyse financial information, in order to make effective business decisions in areas such as performance evaluation, capital expenditure and raising finance. You will also consider these issues and how they sit within the workings of the stock market and the legal constraints of the professional accounting system.

On successful completion you may be eligible to progress to: • the final year of the BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance, the BA (Hons) Business Administration or the BA (Hons) Business Management with Business English (subject to approval) degrees at the University of Plymouth • the second year of other business related degrees at the University of Plymouth • the second or final year of business degrees at other universities • a wide range of careers in business, management, personnel, marketing, finance, accounting and public administration.

How will I be assessed?

In today’s competitive business world, managers must make decisions that deliver results on time and within budget. Our foundation degree will teach you to become accomplished in the key business fundamentals of managing the administration of systems and processes vital to supporting these business decisions. On successful completion of the first year you will be eligible to gain the Institute of Administrative Management diploma, progressing to the advanced diploma in year two.

Modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework, in-class tests and examinations.

Audio and Music Production What’s it all about?

How will I be assessed?

Based at Deep Blue Sound’s multi-million pound recording complex in the city centre of Plymouth, this course focuses on the technical and creative skills required to become a successful music producer and sound engineer. Alongside the main qualification, you will also work towards gaining industry recognised Pro-Tools certification giving you a competitive edge in the employment market.

Modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework, in-class assessments, presentations, examinations, class tests and projects.

Forensic science is one of the most fascinating areas of applied science - the use of scientific procedures to produce evidence in a court of law. This course is designed to reflect the activities and responsibilities of those who are fully developed and experienced practitioners, particularly in guidance and in formal advocacy. Candidates might also have some managerial or training responsibilities. They could also be creators of information, advice and guidance, either disseminating information themselves as practitioners or through their organisation in the form of publications. Candidates at this level are expected to have a more dynamic relationship with other organisations.

You will need to collect a variety of evidence such as statements, observations and testimonies to build a portfolio. All of this will be under the guidance of an assessor. Once the criteria for each unit have been met, the unit will be signed off as competent.

What next? You may wish to progress onto higher education qualifications - for example a foundation degree.

Business Improvement Techniques What’s it all about?

How will I be assessed?

This course is primarily aimed at those who are employed as supervisors, managers, team leaders or facilitators, and are responsible for carrying out business improvement activities, or for those prepared to take on staff responsibilities in a business improvement environment.

You will need to collect a variety of evidence you have produced or worked on such as plans, charts, reports, standard operating procedures or documents produced as part of a work activity, statements, observations and testimonies to build a portfolio. All of this will be under the guidance of an assessor. Once the criteria for each unit has been met, the unit will be signed off as competent.

What do I need to get on the course? You will need to obtain approval from your company management to be allowed time and support to be able to complete the programme, and have permission to take on and lead at least three team projects and be responsible for team and policy/procedural change.

What does the course involve? There is a choice of two pathways within the qualification and you can choose from either a process or quality pathway. Health and Safety What’s it all about?

How will I be assessed?

This diploma is the qualification for aspiring health and safety professionals, building directly upon the foundation of knowledge provided by the NEBOSH National General Certificate. It is designed to provide the underpinning knowledge for a professional career in health and safety and also provides a sound basis for progression to postgraduate study. It is suitable for newly appointed health and safety practitioners and those with substantial experience - it equips holders to advise on effective management of risk across a range of employment sectors.

Assessment is by three written examinations, one per unit, and one assignment. All assessment is externally set and marked by NEBOSH.

What do I need to get on the course?

What next? The NEBOSH National Diploma is recognised by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) as fulfilling the academic requirements for Chartered Membership (CMIOSH) conferring the official title of Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner. Internal Quality Assurance Awards What’s it all about?

How will I be assessed?

This new qualification is needed to meet the emerging needs of the developing qualification frameworks and to reflect changes in the practice of assessment and quality assurance. Each of the new units covers the essential knowledge and understanding that internal quality assurers require.

You will be required to produce a portfolio of evidence, demonstrating a range of activities involving supporting and monitoring assessors and carrying out quality assurance of vocational assessment.

What do I need to get on the course? Entry requirements will depend on your existing experience/knowledge and access to students/quality assurance opportunities. However, you will complete a skills scan prior to enrolment to determine the exact entry requirements.

What next? Progression will depend on the particular award you take - this may include progressing to achieve either one or two additional units (depending on your particular job role within quality assurance).

What does the course involve? This course is aimed at middle managers who want to develop their leadership and management knowledge and skills. It is an opportunity to develop career opportunities and to gain a nationally recognised diploma in management.

Assessment is by means of nine internally set and assessed assignments. Completed portfolios, together with nine modular reflections, are also assessable.

What do I need to get on the course? In addition to the overall entry requirements on pages 86 - 89, you should be working at, or towards, middle management level and have the capability to work at this level.

Our course will help you to gain a more in-depth understanding of strategic issues relating to your business or industry sector. We will help you expand your conceptual thinking and leadership skills to support your personal traits and authority, so you can deal effectively with such challenges.

The PGCE leads to full qualification as a teacher in the post-compulsory sector. It comprises a blend of theory and practice, with the emphasis on practice. The course is a part-time, in-service teacher training programme. Assessment is via eight teaching practice observations, eight assignments and one extended individual development plan.

What do I need to get on the course?

Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector Diploma, Level 4

Whatâ€™s it all about?

What does the course involve?

The Diploma in Teaching is an in-service route to fully qualified teacher status in the lifelong learning sector (QTLS). The learning sector not only embraces further education colleges and adult or compulsory-based learning, but also work-based and public sector training. You will acquire a practical teaching and training toolkit to use in your everyday professional role. You will also develop reflective and critical skills to enhance your practice and know how to maintain your continuing professional development.

You will attend one taught class a week (four hours) and be able to undertake four to eight hours self study per week throughout the course and complete assignments for each unit. You will also be observed in your teaching practice by both course tutors and your mentor.

What do I need to get on the course? You need to be in a suitable teaching or training post to join the course. A minimum of 150 hours teaching/training practice is required over the two years of the course. You need to be suitably qualified in one or more specialist subjects or vocational areas. In most cases this will be a level 3 or above qualification. You will also need a level 2 or above literacy skills qualification and will need to be able to appoint a mentor; someone who is a fully qualified teacher or trainer in your subject specialism. You will also need to have a level 3 or 4 entry qualification in teaching, such as the City & Guilds 7303, 7302 or 7307.

University Short Courses and CPD Awards CPD awards are designed to benefit individuals, employees or employers for personal, professional and business development.

If you want to try something new or improve your skills, you might like to think about joining our university short courses or CPD awards. Each year you can study up to 40 credits (usually two modules of a foundation degree) from a range of our foundation degree courses to achieve a University Short Course certificate from the University of Plymouth. Alternatively, up to 60 credits (usually three modules) from our foundation degree courses can be studied to be awarded a University of Plymouth Certificate of Professional Development. We can offer these courses in a range of subjects.

Dependent upon the course, we welcome applications from people who have: • 60-120 UCAS tariff points* • a BTEC national award in a related subject • a 14-19 advanced diploma • an advanced Apprenticeship • an NVQ level 3 in a related subject • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience. * see pages 88-89

Mature students who can demonstrate they have prior work experience in place of academic qualifications will be interviewed and may be offered a place. Admission to foundation degrees can be based on accreditation of prior experience and not just formal qualifications.

Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS) This is a nationally recognised scheme for valuing, describing, measuring and recognising all learning. It is based on a point system and applies to all HNC, foundation degrees, university short courses and certificate of professional development awards. When you successfully complete a course you earn a certain number of points.

Once earned, these are normally recognised by other institutions and may be transferable. The HNC, foundation degree and bite-sized university courses we offer are either: • level 4 - first year degree level CATS points, or • level 5 - second year degree level CATS points.

What is the UCAS tariff?

Donâ€™t miss the deadlines

Itâ€™s the conversion of further education qualifications, such as AS and A levels, VCEs, BTECs and OCRs etc, into one points system that universities can use to evaluate applications and make offers.

UCAS has a series of deadlines for students to meet, which you can find on their website - www.ucas.com. Deadlines are important - please make sure you know when to apply.

How does it work?

With so many students applying you are best to apply as early as possible, but it is never too late to apply to the College. We may have places available right up until September for courses starting that year.

Each qualification and grade is worth a number of points. All grades and qualifications are added together to give a total tariff point score.

Costs and Funding I nfo rma tion

Essentially, there are two sets of finance you need to consider: • tuition fees, and • living expenses. At the time of going to print the government had not yet approved the higher education fee structure. Please check our website for updated information.

Tuition fees Fees for students on full-time foundation degree courses are amongst the most competitive in the UK. For UK or EU students on a full-time foundation degree course at City College Plymouth, the annual tuition fee for the academic year 2011/12 was £2,490.

Tuition fees are charged on all courses and you may need to make a contribution. How much you contribute will be determined by Student Finance England. They use an income test and assessment to work out what you will have to pay based on household income for the financial year ended 5 April 2012. You can apply to take out a fee loan to help cover the fee costs whilst at College. The fees for part-time foundation degree courses in 2011/12 were £1,245 (a discounted full-time fee) per year over two years, and £830 per year over three years. The amount of grant you receive will depend on your household income. In 2011/12 students had to be undertaking at least 50% equivalent of a full-time course to be eligible to apply. Part-time application forms are available, later in the year, from the Student Finance England via website www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk. 91

Living expenses In 2011/12 there were various funds that students could apply to for help with living expenses. These included: • student maintenance loan and grant • childcare grant • disabled student allowance. The maintenance loan and grant are to help with your living expenses. The maximum rate of loan available for 2012 was £3,497 (for those living away from home, but not in London) and the maximum rate for the maintenance grant was £2,906, but different levels apply depending on personal circumstances. To apply for these funds, and for the tuition fee loan, go online to the Student Finance England website via the Direct Gov website at www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk. Any student loan taken out through Student Finance England is only repayable once you leave your course and start to earn over £25,000* a year, (*for 2012/13). Further education courses funded by the Local Education Authority, such as Access to Higher Education, are not covered by Student Finance England. 92

Any higher education student who is suffering financial hardship, even after receiving help from Student Finance England, can apply to the Access to Learning Fund, which is managed by the College. Finding Somewhere to Live I nfo rma tion

Many students live at home while they attend the College. However some, especially those who have come from overseas, need to find accommodation for the duration of their course. The College recommends Unite - the largest private provider of modern, affordable student accommodation within the UK - to students looking for a home away from home. Unite has three properties in Plymouth that are available to College students: Discovery Heights, Central Point and Alexandra Works - all within two miles of the College. All three offer en-suite single study bedrooms arranged in flats, sharing a kitchen with other students. Discovery Heights and Central Point are conveniently located in the city centre. We want you to be able to make the most of your learning experiences at the College. Personal tutors You will be allocated a personal tutor who has been specially trained to give you support and guidance on your course. They will help you settle into the College, hold regular meetings to discuss your progress and/or any difficulties faced, and discuss with you the best way to deal with them.

Careers guidance services and student services You can be sure that when you speak to us we will give you the best impartial information, advice and guidance. In fact, we have achieved the Investor in Careers Award and the Matrix award for the quality of our services.

We are here to help so that you can concentrate on your studies. Libraries and computing facilities To help you in your studies we provide: • two libraries, one at Kings Road and one at Goschen. These house reference and loan copies of around 60,000 multi-media items • professional librarians to help you access and use print and e-resources • an extensive collection of e-books and e-journals appropriate to your studies • group inductions to the collection, highlighting resources for your chosen subject • group sessions to help you develop information skills such as internet searching • state-of-the-art internet PCs (and laptop provision) with Microsoft and specialist software • access to the College VLE (virtual learning environment) and all your reference and revision course documents • e-access to the University of Plymouth library catalogue and electronic resources • the opportunity to obtain a University of Plymouth library card for borrowing certain materials and using the PCs 24/7.

Childcare

Travelling to College

As a parent, you may find that juggling the everyday practicalities of family life with studying can be tricky. We want to support you as much as possible so you can enjoy your studies and be a responsible parent to your child. The College runs two ‘outstanding’ nurseries and a kids’ club.

Students from Devon (mainly the Ivybridge, Kingsbridge and Tavistock areas), and Cornwall (mainly the Launceston, Liskeard and Looe areas) will be able to buy a subsidised travel pass, which can be used on a number of public bus services. In addition, the College operates a free bus that runs between the city centre, Goschen and Kings Road.

Students aged 16-19 have to apply to their respective county council in the first instance and only if declined, can purchase the relevant pass from the College. Full-time students aged under 23 who live within the Plymouth city boundaries can claim a child fare on all Citybus routes. Making the Most of Your Free Time I nfo rma tion

Your first few months at the College can be as confusing as they are exciting. While your main focus is on getting good grades you also need to balance your hard work with having a good social life too. Being a student is not just about learning, itâ€™s about getting involved, enjoying yourself and making new friends! The College has a calendar of events and activities running throughout the year to promote local and national issues, and to support you with your progression either on to employment or further courses. It also gives you a chance to get involved with what happens at your College, make the most of your free time, try something new and have some fun! The Student Liaison team will make sure you enjoy your time at the College. We do this by providing the other side of the coin that is College life - the fun bit! We ask students questions about what they want from us, listen to their feedback, and use the information we gather to create a year-long programme of activities for all students.

As a student at the College you have automatic membership to our Students’ Union (SU) - an independent, student-led organisation which makes sure that your voice is listened to and that the College is doing everything it can to give you the best experience possible. Not only that, but as a higher education student on a University of Plymouth course, you also have automatic membership to the University of Plymouth Students’ Union (see image below) … brilliant!

We run the Student Centres (recreational common rooms) at each main site. They are packed with things to do (pool, music, Nintendo Wii, craft workshops and lots more). Access to a wide range of recreational activities that are tailored to suit your needs. Anything from outdoor activities such as kayaking, rock climbing, and sailing, to screen printing your own t-shirts or running a junk band workshop. We also have sports equipment and an on-site gym. Becoming a student at the College means you have access to another vital part of the College - the Students’ Union (SU). This is your representational student body.

A bonus of being a student is the array of discounts you’ll be entitled to with an NUS Extra card. These include VUE cinemas, Amazon.co.uk, Superdrug, Topshop and hundreds of others. The card is available from the SU at a cost of £11 (2011 price) - call in at the start of the year and get a full year’s worth of discounts.

Students on courses approved by the University of Plymouth may also join the University of Plymouth Students’ Union (UPSU) and enjoy full access to the UPSU’s facilities and services. There are around 100 sporting clubs and activity-based societies making up UPSU’s hub of student activity. Sporting clubs range from traditional football, rugby and hockey, to the off-the-wall ‘octopush’ and ‘ultimate frisbee’, and the more adventurous caving, skiing and snowboarding.
