Classic is that thing which never goes out of style. Whether material or intangible, something classic evokes a timelessness, an aesthetic or standard that sustains, unmoved, through the ever-changing winds of fad and fashion. The editors of Traditions 2005 have chosen this year's theme, "Return to the Classics", as a way to honor the spirit of St. Stephen's and St. Agnes, a classic institution of its own right. We look to the Classics, both the intellectual material and the proportioned aesthetic of Classical Greece and Rome, as reflections, revelations of the truths of the human spirit and the human mind, witnesses of permanence in a world that constantly changes around us. As a staff, we have tried to capture the essence of this institution and record that classic essence within these pages.

As you, the reader, thumbs through these pages now and in the years to come, we hope that the timelessness of this community and memories of the experiences we share are as vivid as the pictures in these pages and as lasting as the pediments of antiquity. Eds.

DEDICATION

What is this master teacher, this man, this gentleman, this scholar, that makes him such a notable figure at St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School? Who is this quiet, smiling, unassuming man who walks the halls of the Upper School with often robotics in hand or with forensic tournament score sheets under careful scrutiny by his eagle eyes? Who is he who dons wigs or headdresses while preaching in chapel and makes us cry as quickly as he makes us laugh with stories of his life and experiences shared with the driest of wit? He is, indeed, a master teacher, a man whose passion for learning, for growing, for achieving, is unmatched, and whose sphere of influence reaches beyond the walls of the classroom and into the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. He is a man who gives of himself without restraint, who takes on the causes of those who need a voice, and whose level of dedication and quiet determination is peerless among a faculty of already outstanding purpose. Truly a prophet of the technology divines, this man's brain, immense in its abilities, functions with the precision and the capacity of the computers he cares for so well. He breathes logic, whether leading the speech and debate team in successful tournaments or teaching his classes how to build robotic machines. His processes are paced and even meditative, and his demeanor reflects the same kind of harmony. Rooted in a deep, personal faith, this master teacher models a life of selfless giving and quiet dedication, whether in leading Habitat for Humanity building projects or quiet conversation. A musician as well, this multi-faceted man studies opera in his spare time, sings in his church choir, and plays music with students in a band. Indeed it is this man's ubiquitous presence and his disarming smile that characterize any given school day for many in this community. He is certainly an amazing man whose talents and whose willingness to share both seem unending. Ever-learning and ever-giving, this man is truly a master teacher, and one to whom the yearbook staff proudly dedicates Traditions 2005. We are honored by your presence, Sir, and we learn by your example.

We, the editors of Traditions, decided to use a "Cinematic" theme to capture the picture-perfect setting of St. Stephen's & St. Agnes. As soon as the school year started the Traditions staff hit the ground running, and we set out to record our fellow Saints. We have worked hard to make sure to chronicle the 2009-2010 school year, so that everyone in the Saints community can always look back and remember this wonderful year. The Editors wish for not only Junior Kindergarten to Seniors, but also for the Faculty, Parents, Staff, and all who were here for 2009-2010 to have beautiful memories that they can always look back on in Traditions. We would also like to thank Kelsey Reeder, our "fifth Editor," for all of her hard work and invaluable help throughout the production of this year's Traditions. We hope you never forget the wonderful things that happened this year!

UtUILA I IUN Mrs. Stephanie Koroma

"Vibrant", "caring", "energetic", and "professional" are just a few of the words used to describe Mrs. ~phanie Koroma . Since starting at St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School in the fall of 2003, Mrs. Koroma s striven to make our school as welcoming and warm as possible. A determined leader and a mpassionate friend, she has become a vital part of the St. Stephen's and St. Agnes community in the ren years she has been with us. Her contributions to the Athletics and Science Departments are only ;hlighted by the strength and courage that shines through her dynamic character.

Born and raised in Ithaca, New York, Mrs. Koroma came from a long line of educators and ministrators. So, naturally, she quickly decided what she wanted to do with her life: teach. Mrs. ,roma attended Hamilton College where she received her undergraduate degree in Biology with a nor in Psychology in 2003. That very fall, she joined the faculty of St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School ching Biology and Environmental Science. She wanted to teach Psychology, however, and endeavored make it an elective with swift success. In 2008 the class was upgraded to an Advanced Placement use with Mrs. Koroma as the first and only teacher. She now teaches one section of AP Psychology in 1junction with her new position as Girls' Athletic Director.

Since she started in 2003, Mrs. Koroma made her fervor for sports quite apparent. She started as a sketball and Softball coach and still does so now. After the 2008-2009 school year, Mrs. Koroma eived a promotion from just a coach and teacher and added Administrator to her list of :omplishments, as the new Athletic Director for girls' sports . Her loves for teaching is still evident, wever, as she pushes her schedule to the limit in order to teach AP Psychology.

This and other actions only serve to reinforce what should be plain to see from the start. She is a 1ply amazing person, and can juggle all of her occupational responsibilities on top of caring for her 1ily: Mr. Sufyaan Mohammed Koroma (whom she married in the summer of 2009) and her odesian Ridgeback, Sierra . Her supportive and empowering nature helps so many others reach their e potential, and she always put other people 's need ahead of her own. She truly exemplifies what it ans to be a Saint, and it is with great honor that we, the 2009-2010 Traditions staff, dedicate this rbook to Mrs. Stephanie Koroma.

Mme Van Way

Liliana (2) with Mme Van Way Mme Vonnique Van Way joined the St. Stephen's and St. Agnes Upper School faculty in the fall of 1999 and has since contributed her excellence in the college process and French culture to the school. After working as a French teacher for three years, Mme Van Way left on maternity leave, but returned two years later to serve as a College Counselor. She stayed in this position for two years before reaching back to her French roots and becoming the French teacher whom all of her students have come to know and love. Not only does Mme Van Way teach three different levels of French in the Upper School, but she also sponsors the French Club, and has lead the Normandy Exchange program for four years. Her students describe her as having "a bubbly and energetic personality that, combined with her amazing teaching skills, makes her a great person in and out of the classroom. Her enthusiasm makes me look forward to her class and learning french."

Mme Van Way was born and raised in Virginia Beach, and started taking French classes in elementary school. At the age of eleven, she and her family moved to France for nine months while her mother was on sabbatical from teaching.

With this life changing move, Mme Van Way discovered her love for French. She continued to practice her French speaking skills while spend her summers in France with relatives. Mme Van Way earned her high school diploma from Norfolk Academy and went onto Smith College but transferred to Georgetown University to finish her undergraduate education. Although primarily interested in the French language, Mme Van Way also studied Latin for four years and took German classes all through college, broadening her love for linguistics. She graduated from Georgetown with a Bachelor of Sciences in French.

After college, Mme Van Way worked on Capital Hill for a congressman, but realized that she would rather pursue her interest in French than work in politics. Inspired by her mother, Mme Van Way considered becoming a teacher.

Mme Van Way began substitute teaching for a while and soon found she loved teaching children. While her husband was in the process of receiving his law degree at William & Mary, Mme Van Way returned to school to get a teaching degree from Old Dominion University . While earning her degree, she worked in the Study Abroad Office, helping students chose locations that were right for them. This experience reinforced her love for different cultures, especially in Francophone countries . After completing her graduate degree, Mme Van Way finally started teaching French in 1994.

Mme Van Way now has two children, Liliana and Sean, who attend St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School. Liliana is in second grade and Sean is in fifth grade. Much to Mme Van Way's delight , Sean began taking French last year and hopes one day to be a part of the Normandy Exchange.

When asked what her ideal French-speaking country to visit would be, Mme Van Way replied , "anywhere that speaks French is hands down a wonderful place, but my dream is to visit a French-speaking African country."
