National Black Family Day (May 2023

National Black Family Day

National Black Family Day was established by the 13th National President of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, Dr. Eva C. Wanton (1986 – 1990). It is celebrated annually during the month of May. National Black Family Day came about in May of 1987 when The Honorable William Gray III, Congressman from Pennsylvania, spoke with conviction when he entered a tribute to Jack and Jill of America into the Congressional Record on May 5, 1987, as the organization embarked upon a Black Family Day of Celebration. This is a chapter-wide activity designed to promote the solidarity of the family, reach out to the community at large, to support and strengthen black families.

To commemorate Black Family Day, we will come together for a “Family Day Party” on Saturday, May 6, 2023, to dine, dance, and celebrate our families as the program year starts to wine down! We will celebrate the 15 graduating seniors, the moms who are bridging over, grade group promotions, mother, father, and associate of the year. The Tallahassee Chapter of Jack and Jill supports and encourages its membership to participate in Black Family Day. This event was introduced to the national organization on May of 1987 by our very own dearly departed two-term, 13th National President Dr. Eva Wanton. The Tallahassee Chapter is delighted to share Dr. Wanton's love and appreciation for academic excellence by celebrating our graduating seniors, the talents of our children, all while emphasizing the strength of the Black Family.
