UT Southwestern is undertaking a $480 million, 12-story expansion that will serve as the clinical home for the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute, consolidate acute inpatient care services currently provided at Zale Lipshy University Hospital, and add operating rooms, interventional suites, an expanded Emergency Department, and two new parking facilities. This facility offers technology and advanced delivery processes to maximize the patient experience. SSR also led the design for the original replacement hospital.

SSR has provided consulting engineering services for Cook Children’s Medical Center continuously since 1996. Completed work include the following additions to the hospital: 273,000 SF MOB (Dodson Specialty Clinics Building), 283,000 SF North Tower, 179,000 SF Pavilion, 30,000 SF Outpatient Surgery Department, and 45,000 SF South Extension.

SSR also designed other non-hospital buildings at the main campus such as the north garage, data center, office building, and child development center as well as expansions to the south garage and central plant.

MEMORIAL HERMANN SUSAN & FAYEZ SAROFIM PAVILION

CHRISTUS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF SAN ANTONIO (CHOSA)

The Susan and Fayez Sarofim Pavilion, a new 17-story trauma tower, will add over one million square feet of state-of-the-art spaces for surgery, emergency care, intensive care, and administrative and support services. In addition to replacing 71 existing patient beds, the facility adds 160 new beds, 24 operating rooms, and 16 emergency room bays. A 335seat café offers patients, families, and staff an attractive respite.

CHRISTUS approved a plan to create a 400,000 SF freestanding academic children’s hospital on the site of the original, 100-year-old hospital in downtown San Antonio. Half of the hospital was rebuilt, with the other half undergoing major renovation. Several new features were added to the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio (CHOSA), known as the “Beacon of Hope” as much for its exterior lighting at night as for its care for children.

TEXAS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL LESTER AND SUE SMITH LEGACY TOWER

Houston Methodist built a new 193-bed hospital in The Woodlands on the Houston Methodist Hospital campus. Ground breaking on the new 550,000 SF hospital took place in 2015, with completion finalized in 2017.

Two 160,000 SF medical office buildings sit adjacent to the hospital. The project included a new central utility plant, initially equipped with two paralleled 2,000 kilowatt generating units, with provision for two more units to accommodate future expansion. SSR is currently working with Houston Methodist on a new tower addition.

Texas Children’s built 19 floors on top of the existing building base next to Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women adding 643,000 SF, resulting in a 25-floor tower and over 1.6 million SF over the past 10 years, bordering the Texas Medical Center (TMC). The infrastructure is designed to accommodate an additional 10 floors on top of the Pavilion for Women Tower.

The new tower houses 130 beds for pediatric and cardiovascular intensive care, new operating rooms with the latest technology and is the new home to Texas Children’s Heart Center, including the outpatient clinic, cardiovascular operating rooms and catheterization labs.

SSR began working with Memorial Hermann in 1991 and has been one of their preferred consultants since. Projects range from small renovations and infrastructure upgrades to new facilities.

SSR provided commissioning services for this $260 million, one million SF addition/ renovation to the University Medical Center of El Paso campus. Services included commissioning the mechanical equipment and systems, fire protection equipment, plumbing equipment, medical gas equipment, and eletrical equipment.

HOUSTON METHODIST HOSPITAL SUGAR LAND CAMPUS

SSR has been Houston Methodist Hospital’s partner since 1996 in developing a 45-acre site from an 80,000 SF community health center into a 1.2 million SF acute care facility with three medical office buildings, an orthopedic and sports medicine clinic, cancer center, and two parking garages.

SSR is currently planning the final expansion phase to accommodate a 400-bed campus with new bed towers and central plant expansion. This final phase is the culmination of the master plan envisioned for the site 15 years ago. SSR provided the planning, design and construction supervision of MEP and infrastructure systems to support that growth.

SSR is providing services at CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital - Tyler on a two-part project that includes a new parking garage, new central utility plant, modifications to existing CUP, and a new patient tower.

The new 200,000 SF patient tower will drastically increase the Emergency and Intensive Care capabilities of the entire CHRISTUS System. The plans for the five level expansion include private treatment rooms including dedicated pediatricfriendly rooms, shell space for future growth, and two helipads. The new tower will connect to both the existing hospital and the Louis & Peaches Owen Heart Hospital.

JENNIE SEALY HOSPITAL UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS GALVESTON, TX The $438 million replacement facility features 310 patient rooms, including 60 dedicated ICU beds, a 28-bed day surgery unit, and 20 state-of-the-art operating suites.

SSR also provided services on the Clinical Services Wing (CSW) that connects to the hospital. The CSW contains the pharmacy, laboratory space, support services (environmental services, materials management, linen), and a kitchen and faculty/staff dining area.

HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER CLINIC TOWER / RESEARCH CENTER TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY LUBBOCK, TX

While the primary goal was to consolidate all clinical care into one patient friendly building, the new Clinical Tower / Research Center at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center also unifies the existing buildings and creates a focal point for this West Texas campus. The project consists of approximately 165,000 SF of new construction and 25,000 SF of renovated space in the existing Health Sciences Center.

BROOKE ARMY MEDICAL CENTER RENOVATION

AMERICAN AIRLINES ACCESS CONTROL & SECURITY CONSULTING

SSR provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and commissioning services for the Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) expansion and renovation within the existing hospital, in accordance with the Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC) passed in 2005, with many medical functions and activities being consolidated at Fort Sam Houston. BAMC is home to one of the largest education components in the military. All renovations to clinic and treatment spaces included the addition and incorporation of resident-related teaching facilities.

SSR was contracted by American Airlines for consulting services to assess the existing security platforms, research and evaluate system manufacturers, and develop a plan for the implementation of an enterprise system.

The scope consisted of deploying a new access control system throughout American Airlines domestic facilities in multiple locations. American Airlines has also engaged SSR to provide security consulting for their new 300-acre $350 million headquarters campus in Fort Worth, Texas.

EPIC RECREATION CENTER WATER PARK

The Epic anchors Grand Prairie’s Central Park with an indoor and outdoor 70,000 SF water park with a retractable roof and 3.5 acres of outdoor space. The Epic also features a 120,000 SF fitness center and a special playground. The mega recreation center and water park is a state-of-the-art facility. In addition to the recreation amenities offered this is a place to have fun and learn with day camps and the community gatherings to enjoy the arts, get fit, and have fun yearround.

SSR has been repeatedly selected as the Texas Department of Criminal Justice consultant since 2008. Under this contract SSR provides professional engineering services including structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection for all of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice facilities. The engineering services include design work, construction administration, field investigations, and facility studies and planning.

TEXAS HEALTH RESOURCES FRISCO HOSPITAL & MOB

Texas Health Frisco Hospital is the first hospitalbased partnership between UT Southwestern and Texas Health Resources. The campus and medical office building are located in the heart of Frisco, a young, growing community with people from all over the U.S The hospital includes a 73bed acute care center along with the normal service lines, partnered with a 120,000 SF UT Southwestern medical office building. The campus takes into account a variety of environmentally friendly options such as: wind reduction and noise pollution; heat absorption to reduce air conditioning demand; an irrigation system that uses rain and condensation; and a variety of others.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston wanted to create a campus that could provide patients a wide array of mental health needs by increasing the number of available mental health beds and reducing the stigma of treatment. The 220,000 SF care center includes assessment, crisis intake, inpatient treatment, residential treatment, and a 264-bed residential independent living designed to enable effective and natural interactions between patients and staff. SSR provided technology services for this project.

WILLIAM BEAUMONT ARMY MEDICAL CENTER REPLACEMENT COMPLEX

TEXAS HEALTH RECOVERY & WELLNESS CENTER

The Fort Bliss replacement hospital is a massive campus, totaling 1.1 million SF in six buildings. The campus consists of a sevenstory replacement hospital and five support buildings, including an inpatient clinic, outpatient clinic, administrative building, clinical investigation building, and central utility plant. Construction began in 2012 and they are set to move patients in September of 2020. SSR is providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, commissioning, and building enclosure commissioning services for the project.

The Texas Health Resources Recovery and Wellness Center is a two-story, 75,000 SF facility on a 40-acre campus in Mansfield, Texas. The campus provides behavioral health services for adults and children. SSR provided technology services for this project.

DICKIES ARENA

The new Dickies Arena is a state-of-the-art multi-purpose facility designed for concerts, sporting events, rodeo, and the monthlong Fort Worth Stock Show. Dickies Arena will seat 14,000 for concerts and 9,300 for equestrian and rodeo events. In addition to the 580,000 SF arena, the facility features 91,315 SF of space for indoor stock booths or pens, suitable for 400 spaces. SSR provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology design services for the facility.

The Toyota Center is a 18,000-seat arena that serves as the home of the NBA’s Houston Rockets. The facility contains a total of 103 suites including courtside, traditional, and party suites. The arena floor is set at nearly 32 feet below street level giving the Toyota Center the largest lower level of any arena. The arena is equipped with an ice floor and SSR worked to incorporate desiccant dehumidification systems into the HVAC design of the seating bowl to ensure compliance with the NHL. SSR was responsible for all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing through DD stage and full mechanical through CD stage.

AMON G. CARTER STADIUM REDEVELOPMENT

TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY FT. WORTH, TX

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS DENTON, TX

The Amon G. Carter stadium redevelopment project was a multi-phase expansion and renovation to the existing Amon G. Carter Stadium. The 45,000-seat stadium at Texas Christian University was renovated in two phases. SSR was responsible for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection design. The project achieved LEED Silver® certification.

The 35,000-seat Apogee Stadium is the home of the University of North Texas football team. The facility features 20 luxury suites, a club level with chair back seating, and several decks for group gatherings and special events. With a state-ofthe-art sound system, giant video boards, and abundant restrooms and concessions, this facility is also primed to host high school playoffs, band competitions, commencement ceremonies, and other community events. The project is the first athletic stadium to achieve LEED Platinum® certification and includes wind turbines. SSR was responsible for mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection design.
