SPEAK CREATIVE HEADQUARTERS

MEMPHIS, TN

Speak Creative, a full-service digital marketing agency, had outgrown its current headquarters in Cordova and was looking to relocate in the East Memphis area. The firm was able to find a vacant lot and build their creative office vision from scratch. The facility features an expansive, flexible work space with glass-walled private offices to facilitate communication and collaboration among colleagues. Currently housed on the second floor, the layout focused on bringing in natural light and creating inviting spaces where people could work together. The first floor, currently unoccupied, features additional Class A office space for a future tenant or growth of the agency. SSR provided civil and structural services for the project.

SHELBY COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT

MEMPHIS, TN

The existing Shelby County Health Department, originally constructed in 1950 and renovated over the years, was no longer able to serve the needs of Shelby County citizens. The County took the opportunity to create a flexible, health-focused space to better serve both patrons and employees of the center. As the largest portion of the building at 30,000 SF, the clinic is located on the main level and features brick veneer cladding with aluminum and glass accents at entry points. The building was designed to feature as much natural light as possible. The focal point of the building is a large staircase, design to increase interaction and promote activity of users, which connects the clinic level with a conference center above. SSR was responsible for structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering services The project is currently under construction.

BALLET MEMPHIS

MEMPHIS, TN

At the corner of Cooper Street and Madison Avenue, an aging French-inspired hotel sat vacant for the better part of a decade. With the advent of several other popular arts venues in the area, this iconic corner in the popular Midtown District was ripe for a rebirth. Enter Ballet Memphis.

Drawing dancers from surrounding counties and states, the regional ballet company was eager for a more central location. The travel difficulties incurred by dancers and their families as well as the lack of a theatre and stage suitable for performances at their Germantown location began to take a toll.

Now serving as the home for Ballet Memphis, the new facility features prominent structural elements, including a steel art wall that is reminiscent of the tulle in ballet costumes. Due to the location of the wall, extensive coordination with the City of Memphis was required as it encroached on the existing right-of-way.

The placement of the structure on the site and the design of the parking were imperative for several reasons. The existing site had an old retaining wall that had to be rebuilt to support the earthwork required to build the new structure. Maintaining a balance between adequate parking and creating a flow that allowed for convenient pickup and drop-off for students attending classes were important design considerations in this urban location. Green infrastructure was incorporated throughout the project. Permeable concrete was used for the parking surfaces and raingardens and bioswales were also used in order to achieve a detention waiver from the City.

HOPE VI CLEABORN HOMES REDEVELOPMENT

MEMPHIS, TN

In an effort to help the owners create more than a brick and mortar establishment, SSR assisted in creating a social, economic, and cultural development. The emphasis of the project was to deconcentrate poverty through the use of mixed-income housing developments. This is the only program that addresses the comprehensive and complex issues facing the low income neighborhoods of Memphis, TN and the people living in them. For SSR, this project was not just a chance to design a redevelopment, but a chance to provide a difference in this community.

SSR provided the first phase of development for the Hope VI Cleaborn Redevelopment project for Memphis Housing Authority by Penrose Development. This included the demolition of 36 acres which included site work, environmental testing and reporting.

The Hope VI Cleaborn redevelopment, phase one, is an 80-unit senior housing facility designed by SSR to meet green communities criteria.

THE VILLAGE AT GERMANTOWN

GERMANTOWN, TN

SSR worked with the Village at Germantown, a senior living community, to expand their current campus. The project added a new 60,000 SF, four-story independent living wing with 32 apartments — a mix of one, two, and three bedroom units as well as a new office for the Village’s marketing department.

The new building connects to two existing apartment wings, creating an expansive internal courtyard and providing residents with a continuous enclosed walkway to dining and recreation functions. The new wing also includes 39 new on-grade covered parking spaces.

SSR also completed several additions and alterations to The Village’s public spaces. Projects included a dining room expansion, alterations to the existing clinic, and an expansion of the existing bar and café. New spaces added include a garage and maintenance shop, a two-story fitness wing, and an activity room which houses multiple functions such as meetings, crafts, and chapel.

HATTILOO THEATRE

MEMPHIS, TN

Construction was completed on the Hattiloo Theatre in Memphis. SSR provided structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and civil design services on the $4.5 million building. The award winning designs often include challenges for our structural engineers. This project was no exception. The first challenge was the 10-foot canopy that the architect wanted to “float” with no supports at the corners. The second challenge was supporting the four-inch thick concrete roof slabs above the theaters that were requested to help deaden the sound from any airplanes. Hattiloo Theatre is of significant cultural importance in Memphis because it is the only African-American repertory theater in the area and only one of eight in the county. Hattiloo Theatre’s main theater is reconfigurable and allows the stage and audience seating to change as dictated by the needs of each production, allowing for a maximum capacity of 180 people. There is a black box theatre that can seat up to 58 people; it is also used for theatre presentations, special events, classes, rehearsals, and other performances.

CENTENNIAL PLACE

TN

SSR provided structural and civil engineering design services for the 285,000 SF dormitory facility for the University of Memphis, which houses 660 dormitory rooms and 144 apartments. The building is a five-story precast and cast in place concrete framed building that utilized topped precast hollow core plank floors supported by exterior ICF (Insulated Concrete Form) walls, interior concrete masonry and cast in place concrete walls as well as interior concrete columns and beams. The building is supported by spread foundations bearing on Geopier reinforced soil. The project included a detached 5,000 SF physical plant building. The two buildings are located on a constricted site bounded by an existing in-use dormitory and parking lot on the north, Patterson on the east, Norriswood on the south, and an existing neighborhood on the west. The constricted site requires a stepped FFE within the building allowing for the grade change across the site. The structure is designed for ADA compliance.

SOUTH CITY

TN

In an effort to alleviate concentrated poverty and breathe new life into central Memphis, the South City Development was born. Situated on the previous home of the 1940s era, 420-unit Foote Homes, the project incorporates 720 housing units, 480 of which are public housing units, effectively increasing the number of affordable housing previously available on the site.

The project encompasses more than housing and is set to deliver additional neighborhood amenities such as a grocery store and early learning center, coupled with blight remediation plans and a targeted small business loan program. It will also be Memphis’ first LEED-certified sustainable community.

SSR is providing structural engineering services for the project, which is currently in the final phases of construction.
