NORTH CLARKSVILLE WATER TREATMENT PLANT CLARKSVILLE, TN

Clarksville Gas & Water needed a new water treatment plant to supplement their existing facility.

Clarksville’s industrial growth over recent years has been explosive and the associated potable water demands were projected to eclipse the existing facility’s capacity in under five years. SSR led a multidisciplinary team of professionals that included numerous subconsultant firms to accomplish the thorough and quality design quickly and efficiently.

Wanting to duplicate their existing plant as much as possible for ease of operations and maintenance, the new plant incorporates the same technologies as the existing plant including coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and membrane filtration. One notable difference between the two plants is the inclusion of pressurized GAC contactors downstream of the membranes.

The City will have an additional 16 MGD of capacity once the first phase of construction is completed. The design allowed for two additions to the new plan to eventually bring the new plant’s capacity to 36 MGD.

STONES RIVER WATER TREATMENT PLANT UPGRADE & EXPANSION MURFREESBORO, TN

The Stones River Water Treatment Plant was designed in 1966 as an 8.0 MGD plant, expanded to 12 MGD in 1979, and then high-rated to 15.2 MGD in 1995. In 2004, the City approached SSR with the desire to once again expand the capacity of the plant to 20.0 MGD using membrane filtration technology, as well as to make extensive upgrades to the existing plant in order to meet current and proposed regulations.

Several challenges complicated the design and construction of this facility. The first challenge was that the facility’s manager was deployed to Iraq for most of the design period. During this time, SSR established FTP sites to allow his input from overseas throughout the design. The design also required that every single facility on the campus be renovated or replaced without a single disruption of service. This required close coordination, constant communication, and extensive planning to accomplish.

ALCOA WATER TREATMENT PLANT & RAW WATER PUMP STATION

SMYRNA WATER TREATMENT PLANT & UPGRADE

SMYRNA, TN

The City of Alcoa Water Treatment Plant is a 16.0 MGD membrane filtration facility that came on-line in April of 2007. This facility was a replacement for an existing conventional treatment facility originally built in 1963. In conjunction with the City, SSR conducted a thorough investigation of options to rehabilitate the existing treatment plant to meet current and impending regulation changes. The evaluation indicated that the plant’s useful life was over and that it should be replaced. SSR continued to work with Alcoa through the piloting of membrane systems, design, and construction of the plant.

The Town of Smyrna contracted with SSR to analyze the existing treatment plant and make recommendations for a required expansion to 18.3 MGD. The project required SSR to design around an existing operational plant.

SSR had to consider the existing structure, yard piping, and operations while designing the plant expansion. This difficult task was accomplished through our attention to detail and close to client relationship.

HARPETH VALLEY UTILITY DISTRICT WATER TREATMENT PLANT

MURFREESBORO WATER RESOURCE RECOVERY FACILITY

The Harpeth Valley Utilities District Water Treatment Facility currently includes four separate water treatment plants located on a very congested site. The District’s growth projections indicated the need to expand capacity from 48 MGD to 115 MGD over the next 30 years. Due to the site constraints and the District’s requirement for a very high degree of TOC and taste and odor reduction, the only technologies that could meet all of their objectives were Actiflo Carb and membrane filtration.

SSR provided engineering design services for the expansion of the Murfreesboro Water Resources Recovery Facility. The project included a third oxidation ditch for nitrification/ denitrification and biological treatment, a new headworks building, two 145-foot diameter final clarifiers, five deep bed sand filters, ultraviolet disinfection, and post-aeration upgrades. The plant has influent raw water pump station capacity of 52.0 MGD. The plant is designed to treat medium strength waste and produce an effluent that will meet tertiary treatment standards.

PIGEON FORGE WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT PIGEON FORGE, TN

The City of Pigeon Forge’s new wastewater treatment plant has a treatment capacity of 6.0 MGD with a peak hydraulic capacity of 15.0 MGD. As part of the project, the City embarked on the development of a beneficial reuse system for irrigation and commercial uses. The plant design included sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) with biological nutrient removal (BNR) capable of meeting a total nitrogen of 5.0 mg/L and chemical coagulation followed by disc filtration to meet a total phosphorous limit of 0.5 mg/L . The facility is also equipped with extensive odor control due to the proximity to local tourist attractions.

Biowin modeling was utilized in conjunction with the SBR manufacturer’s calculations to predict and confirm the adequacy of the proposed system to meet the tighter nutrient limits imposed by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. This model will be calibrated and updated upon startup to monitor and predict the response of the system to varying load, flow, and temperature conditions.

JOHNSON CITY REGIONAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT JOHNSON CITY, TN

The Johnson City Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (JCRWWTP) was originally constructed in 1978 with a capacity of 1.5 MGD. Due to the continuous growth in residential and commercial development and the city’s goal to take a proactive approach in meeting tighter discharge limits, the City partnered with SSR to design a biological nutrient removal (BNR) system to achieve these goals. The SSR team reviewed the treatment needs for the community and examined possible upgrade options for the plant.

SSR provided all engineering design and construction administration services for the expansion and renovation of the JCRWWTP. Due to its extensive improvements, the plant is now rated at a capacity of 6.0 MGD, and can handle hydraulic surges of 15.0 MGD. Since completion in 2010, SSR has continued to work with the City of Johnson City to improve the plant performance and reduce the operational costs.

CENTER POINT ROAD WATER MAIN HENDERSONVILLE, TN SSR provided start to finish engineering services for this 30-inch DIP water main in Hendersonville, TN. The length of the water main was 6,200 LF. The design of the line required a portion to be restrained joint construction. The water main was mostly installed using the open cut process in private easement along Center Point Road. Included in the design were three creek crossings and one bore crossing of Goshentown Road. The project also included new water services to be connected on the existing 16-inch DIP water line; including copper service line and meter assembly for each resident within the area of work.

Fire hydrant assemblies along the route were also replaced. Due to heavy traffic along Center Point Road, traffic control was necessary at certain tie-in locations. It was a project requirement to maintain active water service throughout the construction period, other than when a special exception was made for specific tie-ins, or conversions to a new service. SSR also provided construction engineering inspection services for the project.

38TH AVENUE STORAGE TANK NASHVILLE, TN The existing 38th Avenue North Reservoir was constructed in 1949 out of reinforced concrete and is partially buried between 37th and 38th Avenue North. The exposed western side of the tank utilizes a masonry stone wall that faces Interstate 40. Age, condition, and turnover issues prompted Metro Water Services to explore options for replacement.

The existing 38th Avenue Pumping Station is the only station that currently withdraws from the reservoir. It was determined in the Distribution System Optimization Study (which was also completed by SSR) that the new reservoir will need to be at least 2.5 million gallons in size and approximately 25 feet taller in height to promote proper turnover of the tank. The new reservoir will be confined to the existing 38th Avenue North site. SSR provided civil, instrumentation and controls, and electrical engineering services for the project which is currently awaiting construction.

JAKE THOMAS ELEVATED WATER TANK PIGEON FORGE, TN SSR provided engineering design and construction phase services for the Jake Thomas Elevated Water Tank and Booster Station. The 250,000-gallon elevated tank is located in the northwest corner of the Ripken Complex and includes approximately 1,500 LF of 12-inch water line as well as a new 200 gpm booster pump station. The project was completed in 2016 and features an artistic paint treatment due to its prominent location in the baseball complex.

OLD CEDAR GROVE TANK CROSS PLAINS, TN SSR was responsible for the design and construction of a 750,000 gallon composite elevated water tank in Cross Plains, TN. The 150-foot tall project included a control room, tank logo, 193 LF of 12-inch DIP water line, asphalt access road, and other appurtenances. SSR was also responsible for the coordination of the geotechnical investigation, survey work, and construction phase services.

SOUTHEAST INTERCEPTOR FRANKLIN, TN This project was designed to relieve extreme flow conditions on an existing 36-inch diameter concrete sewer that received flow from the major business and residential sections of central and eastern Franklin, TN. Deterioration of the concrete pipe as well as continuing development had required the existing interceptor to be replaced with the new pipeline, which also provided for additional capacity for projected development within the central, eastern, and southern sections of the City. The new pipeline was installed from the Water Reclamation Facility through the City all the way to Interstate 65 on the eastern border of the City limits.

JACKSON ENERGY AUTHORITY WATER MODEL JACKSON, TN To generate the information necessary to evaluate the needs of JEA’s water system and produce an updated master plan, SSR developed a comprehensive water model using JEA’s geographic information system (GIS) and Innovyze’s InfoWater hydraulic modeling software. The integration of the modeling software inside the GIS environment allowed SSR to develop a system model with a one-to-one relationship between GIS and model features. Consumption rates were allocated in the system model using JEA’s customer service billing database, allowing for the most current and accurate representation of the demands being placed on JEA’s water infrastructure.
