SHELBY COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT

The existing Shelby County Health Department, originally constructed in 1950 and renovated over the years, was no longer able to serve the needs of Shelby County citizens. The County took the opportunity to create a flexible, health-focused space to better serve both patrons and employees of the center. As the largest portion of the building at 30,000 SF, the clinic is located on the main level and features brick veneer cladding with aluminum and glass accents at entry points. The building was designed to feature as much natural light as possible. The focal point of the building is a large staircase, design to increase interaction and promote activity of users, which connects the clinic level with a conference center above. SSR was responsible for structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering services The project is currently under construction.

BARTLETT, TN Tabor Orthopedics is a long-standing practice in the Memphis area. Looking to expand to the Bartlett area, they joined forces with the Memphis Orthopedic Group and MSK Group to bring clinic services, X-ray, physical therapy, and MRI services under one roof to better serve their patients. The building features four internal light corridors to maximize daylighting throughout. The exterior of the building also features large glass walls with angular steel screens to add architectural interest as well as privacy for patients. The facility opened in spring of 2018. SSR provided civil and structural engineering services for the project.

18 S. MAIN RENOVATION AND SHELL BUILD-OUT

TABOR ORTHOPEDICS

MEMPHIS, TN SSR was contacted to help a developer transform an old structure into a vibrant new live/work space. While the developer was finalizing his ultimate design for the space, SSR provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection services for the shell space. SSR used the expected build-out schematics to provide direction for demolition and a design development package for equipment layout and utility needs. The design development package was used by a contractor to provide a estimated construction cost for the final build out.

SSR was the engineer of record on segments two and four and provided additional electrical and structural services on all segments.

The Winston Plywood & Veneer mill is the newest, most technologically advanced plywood mill in North America, featuring state-of-the-art machine control centers and integrated computer controls throughout the facility. The new facility also includes an integrated log processing, peeling, and drying operation. Our unique design services included high pressure steam, compressed air, material conveying high pressure duct, and dust collection design.

It was broken up into five segments. Four segments on east bank and into downtown Memphis, the improvements to the Harahan bridge, and segment five extending into downtown West Memphis. SSR was part of a team that was selected to perform the design of segments one through four on the Memphis side.

MAIN STREET TO MAIN STREET CONNECTORMULTI-MODAL

The Main Street to Main Street Multi-Modal connector project was funded by a Tiger Grant received by the City of Memphis and City of West Memphis Arkansas.

SSR provided civil and structural design services for the new Beale Street Landing project on the Mississippi River. The project consisted of a public park, boat docking facility, and terminal building. SSR designed and coordinated all site related work including the drainage system, erosion prevention, and sediment control over a 10-year time Withline. an average annual fluctuation of 45 feet and daily fluctuations of several feet, waterfront access along the Mississippi River is limited and dangerous. To accommodate the elevation changes, the design team created a 400-foot long floating dock attached to a five-level helical ramp. As the river rises and falls with daily and annual fluctuations, the hydraulic ramp can adjust to the required river water level to allow constant and secure waterfront

BEALE STREET LANDING

Theaccess.fluctuating river also impacted the usability of the riverfront recreational area. Therefore, access at any river level was achieved by creating a terraced park with a paved, serpentine walkway to provide ADA accessibility. At high river levels, the sloping grass terraces will be submerged, but the park will remain usable with its two guitar picked shaped “islands.” With poor soil conditions close to the river, the terminal building was relocated further inland creating less greenspace between the river and the public park. The design team created a green roof building for the terminal building to meet the greenspace design requirements. The poor soil conditions also required bank stabilization via sheet pile walls utilizing tie-back walls. As part of the requirements for this environmentally sensitive project, a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan was developed and submitted to TDEC. SSR is currently studying alternatives to expanding the facility in anticipation of increased cruise line traffic over the next few years.

MEMPHIS, TN

At the corner of Cooper Street and Madison Avenue, an aging French-inspired hotel sat vacant for the better part of a decade. With the advent of several other popular arts venues in the area, this iconic corner in the popular Midtown District was ripe for a rebirth. Enter Ballet Memphis.

Drawing dancers from surrounding counties and states, the regional ballet company was eager for a more central location. The travel difficulties incurred by dancers and their families as well as the lack of a theatre and stage suitable for performances at their Germantown location began to take a toll.

BALLET MEMPHIS

Now serving as the home for Ballet Memphis, the new facility features prominent structural elements, including a steel art wall that is reminiscent of the tulle in ballet costumes. Due to the location of the wall, extensive coordination with the City of Memphis was required as it encroached on the existing right-of-way.

The placement of the structure on the site and the design of the parking were imperative for several reasons. The existing site had an old retaining wall that had to be rebuilt to support the earthwork required to build the new structure. Maintaining a balance between adequate parking and creating a flow that allowed for convenient pickup and drop-off for students attending classes were important design considerations in this urban location. Green infrastructure was incorporated throughout the project. Permeable concrete was used for the parking surfaces and raingardens and bioswales were also used in order to achieve a detention waiver from the City.

MEMPHIS, TN

was able to work with numerous contractors and within the timelines and budgets for this project. This project required a lot of nighttime work and creative problem solving regarding access to the work area to perform inspections. One unique feature of this job was SSR’s utilization of dynamic pile analysis to determine the capacity of the piles with more accurate information. This task was outside the original specifications given by TDOT in this project. SSR was able to determine the length of piles needed, which meant they could be prefabricated before coming to the work site. This saved the project time and money.

Another feature that SSR considers a pillar of this project’s success is continuous communication. SSR prides itself on communication thoroughly and effectively with its subcontractors and with the client, who in turn is able to keep stakeholders and the public informed about the progress of the project with regard to lane closures, etc. SSR’s good communication ensured their work was running on time and within budget.

SSR provided construction engineering inspection oversight for the modification of the I-40/I-240 interchange from I-240 north of Walnut Grove Road to north of Covington Pike including 0.3 miles west of the interchange to Sycamore View at I-40. The project called for the construction of two new flyover bridges, grading, drainage, retaining wall construction, and paving. The project is 5.7 miles in length and was the largest single project for TDOT at the time with a construction cost of $113 million.

I-40 & I-240 INTERCHANGE

The original plan for I-40 was to go straight through the city of Memphis, but in the 1970s, it was decided that I-240 would instead direct the traffic around the city. A single on-ramp was built to carry the traffic from I-40 to I-240. In 2013, 200,000 vehicles passed through the interchange each day, causing major traffic backups and impeding the flow of traffic through the single lane. It is estimated that by 2020, the number of vehicles traveling through the interchange every day will be closer to 350,000. So, TDOT began their project for widening and strengthening the SSR’sinterchange.teamofengineers

WOLF RIVER GREENWAY

As part of the extension of the Wolf River Boulevard Connector, the City of Germantown took the opportunity to extend their greenway system through the Wolf River bottomlands. The new section of the trail runs from just east of Kimbrough Road to Cameron Brown Park. The project includes two trailheads and five pedestrian bridges and is situated between the new roadway and the Wolf River. The section contains a 1.4-mile long asphalt trail system running west to east, connecting the existing greenway trail with residential areas in the eastern portion of AlongGermantown.withbeing developed as a recreational amenity, educational nodes are located along the path so that the Parks Department can take advantage of the greenway as part of their summer educational sessions. The trail is also designed to withstand seasonal flooding, as it is located within the floodplain for the Wolf River. As part of funding for the Greenway, the design team assisted Germantown with the preparation of a Transportation Enhancement Grant. SSR provided design services on the project including the pedestrian bridges and hydraulic analysis. SSR also provided construction engineering and inspection services.

HATTILOO THEATRE

Construction was completed on the Hattiloo Theatre in Memphis. SSR provided structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and civil design services on the $4.5 million building. The award winning designs often include challenges for our structural engineers. This project was no exception. The first challenge was the 10-foot canopy that the architect wanted to “float” with no supports at the corners. The second challenge was supporting the 4-inch thick concrete roof slabs above the theaters that were requested to help deaden the sound from any airplanes. Hattiloo Theatre is of significant cultural importance in Memphis because it is the only African-American repertory theater in the area and only one of eight in the county. Hattiloo Theatre’s main theater is reconfigurable and allows the stage and audience seating to change as dictated by the needs of each production, allowing for a maximum capacity of 180 people. There is a black box theatre that can seat up to 58 people; it is also used for theatre presentations, special events, classes, rehearsals, and other performances.

Crosstown High School, a charter school serving Shelby County, is housed in Crosstown Concourse, a 1.2 million SF redeveloped Sears catalog and retail warehouse. In addition to the high school, Crosstown Concourse features a YMCA, healthcare and commercial office space, retail shops, over a dozen restaurants, hotel, and residential units. Abandoned for almost two decades, the space is truly a revitalized community center. SSR provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection services for the 80,000 SF high school renovation. MEMPHIS, TN

CROSSTOWN HIGH SCHOOL

This project is part of a three-part effort to improve safety along the corridor and consists of the grading, drainage, paving, and construction of a concrete bulb-tee beam bridge and retaining walls on Lamar Avenue (State Route 4 / US-78). Lamar Avenue is a major thoroughfare in southwest Memphis, experiencing heavy commuter and truck traffic due to it’s proximity to the airport, inter-modal facility, and Mississippi suburbs.

The total project length is 1.8 miles. SSR is providing construction engineering inspection during the construction phase of the project. The project has an estimated construction cost of $41 million and is scheduled to be completed in 2021. MEMPHIS, TN
