AB OU T T H E CO M P E TI TI ON The biennial National Piano & Violin Competition is a platform for musical excellence. As Singapore's premier classical music competition, it aims to develop the performing skills of musicians, improve musical standards, and identify potential musical talent by providing the opportunity for young musicians to perform before international adjudicators. This 14th edition of the National Piano & Violin Competition welcomes six world-class musicians to our judging panel: pianists Christopher Park, Marianna Shirinyan, Noriko Ogawa; violinists Erik Heide, Kevin Lin and Yu-Chien (Benny) Tseng.

CHRIS TOP HE R PARK “Christopher Park is a pianist who captivates with his fascinating technical mastery, astounding musical maturity, and a particularly intense performance style” – this was the explanation given by the jury upon awarding Christopher Park the renowned Leonard Bernstein Award 2014. Numerous important ensembles have engaged Park, a German-born musician, including the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, WDR Sinfonieorchester, Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Norwegian National Opera, Hungarian National Philharmonic, Spanish National Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Galicia, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, China NCPA Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic, Orchestre de chambre de Lausanne, English Chamber Orchestra, Munich Symphony Orchestra and Bamberg Symphony. So far he has worked with conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach, Paavo Järvi, Sebastian Weigle, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Ion Marin, James Gaffigan, Zsolt Hamar and Dimitri Kitaenko. He has given concerts all over the world and played at events including the Ravinia Festival, the Lucerne Festival, the Klavierfestival Ruhr, the Rheingau Music Festival and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. As soloist he debuted in renowned concert halls in Barbican Centre London, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Musikverein & Konzerthaus Vienna, Konserthus Stockholm, Opera Oslo, Müpa Budapest, Gulbenkian Lisboa, Philharmonie Berlin, Seoul Arts Center, Kennedy Center Washington D.C., and others. Next to his solo albums with Deutsche Grammophon, his CD with works by Schumann, Stravinsky and Neuwirth is celebrated in European magazines as “brilliant recording” and “reference version”. It is released with Oehms Classics. Christopher Park was influenced by two major musical traditions during his studies: the Russian school of Lev Oborin with Lev Natochenny as well as the German school of Wilhelm Kempff with Joachim Volkmann. Park taught in Frankfurt/Germany at both the Conservatory and the University of Music and Performing Arts. Since 2021 he holds a professorship at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo.

MARIA NNA S HIRIN YA N Armenian-born Marianna Shirinyan is one of the most creative and sought-after pianists in Europe today. Her vibrant and virtuoso musicianship puts her in demand, both as soloist and as chamber musician. Marianna plays with great sensitivity, understanding, technical brilliance and beauty of tone, which allows her to offer a wide range of repertoire. Her love for the music and her joy in sharing it with a larger audience are apparent in her performances. She has received Danish Broadcasting Corporation’s prestigious P2 award for her contribution to Danish music life, the critics’ prize from the Association of Danish critics and just recently the Honorary Carl Nielsen award. Marianna is a frequent guest at a string of international music festivals, among them the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Schwetzinger Festspiele, MDR Summer Music Festival and the Festspillene in Bergen. Marianna has garnered a reputation as a leading pianist of her generation through solo appearances with orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Oslo, Helsinki and Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestras, Potsdammer Kammerakademie, Göteborg Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, among others. She enjoyed collaborations with conductors such as Lawrence Foster, Zoltan Kocsis, Antonello Manacorda, Jun Märkl, Daniel Raiskin, Lan Shui, Thomas Søndergård, Krysztof Urbanski and Joshua Weilerstein. Marianna has a bright discography. One of her later releases, the Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra by Louis Glass which she recorded together with the Rheinische Philharmonie Koblenz under the baton of Maestro Daniel Raiskin was awarded the P2 prize of the Danish radio. Marianna’s latest release Rachmaninoff Suites For Two Pianos together with her former student Dominik Wizjan, released on Orchid Classics has been highly praised by the reviewers and listeners alike. Marianna is a professor of piano at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen and guest professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, in addition to curating several chamber music festivals across Europe.

N ORIKO O G AWA “…pianism of the highest order” – The Times

Noriko Ogawa has achieved considerable renown throughout the world since her success at Leeds International Piano Competition. Noriko’s “ravishingly poetic playing” (The Telegraph) sets her apart from her contemporaries and acclaim for her complete Debussy series with BIS Records, confirms her as a fine Debussy specialist. As an exclusive recording artist for BIS Records, Noriko’s latest recording is of solo music by Eric Satie. Ranging from Mozart, Rachmaninoff and Debussy to contemporary composers including Alexander Tcherepnin, Vagn Holmboe, and Yoshihiro Kanno, Noriko boasts a prolific catalogue of over 30 albums. Noriko appears with all the major European, Japanese and US orchestras including the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Czech National Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. She is a renowned recitalist and chamber musician, performing with artists such as Evelyn Glennie. In 2001 Noriko established a piano duo with Kathryn Stott, performing Malcolm Arnold’s Concerto for Two Pianos at the 2013 BBC Proms. Noriko was appointed as the Chairperson of the Jury for Japan’s prestigious 10th Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in 2018 and elected to the board of the World Federation of International Music Competitions the same year. Noriko is a professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, as well as guest educator at the Royal College of Music, Yamaha Masterclass from Tokyo to Seoul, Chetham’s International Piano Summer School and at the Hamamatsu International Piano Academy. In addition to her busy performing and teaching, Noriko regularly judges at international competitions such as the BBC Young Musician, Munich International Piano Competition, Honens International Piano Competition and the Scottish International Piano Competition.

ERIK HEIDE

Swedish-born violinist Erik Heide graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen in 1998 after studies with Milan Vitek. He furthered his studies at the Musikhochschule in Cologne with the Alban Berg quartet and in Helsinki with Ralf Gothóni. Erik is one of Scandinavia’s most acclaimed chamber musicians and has together with his award-winning piano trio, Trio Ondine, won the Haydn Competition Vienna, the Parkhouse Award London, Audience Prize in both the ARD competition Munchen and the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. The piano trio has performed in concert halls such as Wigmore Hall, Wiener Konzerthaus, as well as at the Pablo Casals Festival. They have also been New Generation Artists for the BBC. Erik has performed as a soloist with many orchestras and recorded several violin concertos for the Danish label Dacapo. His latest performance together with Lars Anders Tomter and Norrköping Symphony Orchestra was nominated for an American Grammy and was Editor’s Choice in the Gramophone. Erik was first concertmaster in Copenhagen Phil between 2004-2018 and in the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra between 2017-2020. He continues to be first concertmaster of the Danish National Chamber Orchestra and performs regularly as a guest leader with orchestras across Europe. He has been invited to guest lead Orchestras such as the Madrid National Symphony Orchestra, Gulbenkian Orchestra Lisbon, Hamburg Staatsoper, Oslo Opera, Norwegian Radio Orchestra and Oslo Philharmonic, amongst others. Erik is a very dedicated teacher and has in recent years established himself as an exciting, innovative and energetic teacher in Scandinavia. He is a professor and Head of Strings in the University of Stavanger (Norway) and Academy of Music in Malmö (Sweden). In the coming years, Erik will work together with YOMA (Young Musicians Academy in Sweden) where he will teach the talented violinists in Sweden and around Europe between the ages of 13 and 18. Erik plays a Joseph Guarnerius violin and loves windsurfing.

KEVIN LIN

Originally from New York, violinist Kevin Lin has received international recognition for his musicianship and “soulful” playing (The Arts Desk). Lin currently serves as Concertmaster of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Lin is a highly sought after Concertmaster, previously holding the position of Co-Leader in the London Philharmonic Orchestra. His Guest Concertmaster appearances have included the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Lin has performed as a soloist and recitalist across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Taiwan, and South Korea. In recent years, Lin has received prizes from the Irving M. Klein International Competition (Fourth Prize) and the Schmidbauer International Competition (First Prize), as well as competed in the George Enescu International Violin Competition and Menuhin International Violin Competition. Lin spent his early years studying with Patinka Kopec in New York, and later with Robert Lipsett at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree. He continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia as a recipient of the Mark E. Rubenstein Fellowship, under the pedagogy of Aaron Rosand.

YU-CHI E N ( BEN NY ) T S E NG Yu-Chien (Benny) Tseng is rapidly building an international reputation as an emerging young soloist of enormous promise praised for his “grace, poise, and blistering virtuosity.” Following his win at the XV International Tchaikovsky Violin Competition in 2015, he has made a series of major debuts, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. A student of eminent pedagogues Aaron Rosand and Ida Kavafian at the Curtis Institute of Music, Tseng previously won first prizes at the Singapore International Violin Competition, Sarasate Violin Competition in Pamplona, Spain and the Isang Yun Violin Competition in Korea. Tseng has appeared as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Belgium, Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan Philharmonic, China Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Sinfonia Varsovia and many others. He has worked with Maestros such as Valery Gergiev, Jiří Bělohlávek, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Osmo Vänskä, Jacek Kaspszyk, Lü Jia and most recently with Mikhail Pletnev. At the Tchaikovsky Competition, his winning performances in the final round featured two of the most iconic concertos in the violin repertoire, Tchaikovsky and Sibelius, attracting the attention of Maestro Valery Gergiev, who invited him to perform at the maestro’s festival in Mikkeli, Finland, as well as the White Night Festival in St. Petersburg and the Far East Festival in Vladivostok. He also performed both the Tchaikovsky and Brahms concertos with Gergiev and the Munich Philharmonic on their tour to Taiwan in November 2015 and the Mozart Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major at the M360 Festival in Munich. Tseng has frequently performed in recitals in Europe, America and Asia. He has released two excellent recordings on Deutsche Grammophon, a recital disc “Reverie” in 2017, a Tchaikovsky album with the Russian National Orchestra and Mikhail Pletnev in 2018. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Tseng pursued his studies in the Curtis Institute of Music from the age of 13. He plays the “ex Jules Massenet” 1735 Niccolò Gagliano on generous loan from a private collector.

Participants in the Artist and Senior categories for both piano and violin are required to perform a set piece in the semi-finals, in addition to their full solo programme and concertos. 2023’s set pieces were written by local composer, Terrence Wong.

Terrence WONG Fei Yang (b. 1989, Singapore) graduated with a Master of Music in Composition in 2021 from the Royal College of Music (RCM) with the support of the Robert Anderson Award from the RCM and the National Arts Council Arts Scholarship (Postgraduate). Wong has studied composition with William Mival, Zechariah Goh Toh Chai and Kenneth Hesketh, as well as conducting with Lim Yau and Leonard Tan. Wong has composed music for notable Singaporean ensembles such as The Philharmonic Winds and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. His compositions have been performed by international artists such as Joseph Alessi (Trombone) and Steven Mead (Euphonium), and in countries as far as Thailand, Hong Kong, South Korea, Lithuania and the United Kingdom. Being equally passionate about music education, he has worked together with Singaporean conductor and educator Adrian Chiang as his Assistant Band Instructor in schools nationwide, and continues to enjoy a strong collaborative relationship with Chiang as a composer and arranger. Wong has also taught composition and orchestration at the School of Music, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Wong is also no stranger to the fields of artistic programming and concert production. In his capacity as the Composer-in-Residence at the Singapore Wind Symphony from 2015 to 2017, Wong spearheaded the Young Composers Challenge and Co|Lab programmes, which was instrumental in the creation of many new wind band works by participants such as Elliot Teo, Darren Sng and Edmund Song, who have since become notable composers in their own right. All in all, Wong believes that his musical journey encompasses a lifelong and fulfilling process of research, appreciation, creative thinking and performance, and aims to express the intricacies of life, love, loss and death through his work. 12

You stand beside a bed; one that is situated in Kandang Kerbau Hospital, or ‘KK Hospital’ as everyone calls it. In your arms you cradle a newborn child; warm, pink, and so small that it fits in the safe grasp of both your hands. It is curled up into a tiny ball, with eyes tightly shut, wriggling about helplessly. You think to yourself – is this little creature even human? You start to imagine what the future has in store for this new lifeform; a myriad of possible life paths await this little being. Will they, like you, take a keen interest in music or the arts? Will they turn towards nursing, tending to the ailments of the masses, or will they take up banking, spending late night after late night in the office staring at figures at a computer and communicating with clients halfway around the world? Will they contribute meaningfully to society, or end up in court for physically abusing others? Will they forge many strong friendships, or will they end up dying alone in a hospital bed? You snap back to the present moment, cradling the tiny, precious little baby, who begins to cry.

You didn’t think this moment would come so soon. Oh, everyone talks about the inevitability of the phenomenon, but still – it should have been tomorrow, next week, next month or next year. Just not now. Time comes to a brief standstill. They say that ‘life flashes before your eyes the moment before death’; you re-live your best and worst moments in life, compressed into the span of an infinitesimally small slice of time. But that too passes, and it is soon time to go. You find yourself in denial, and that emotion soon gives way to anger, raging against whatever higher powers that might exist, questioning why it has to be now, of all times. You bargain with them, asking for just one more hour, a minute, or even a second. You then grieve for everything that you will lose once this moment is over. But you also remember – your life was not a bad one. There were many unpleasant experiences, but also plenty of cherished ones that you had shared with your loved ones. You remember giggling while Dad pushed you on a swing at a HDB playground; stuffing your face with Mom’s curry chicken after a long day at school; arguing with Big Bro and Little Sis over who gets to play with the game console; working overnight on that group project with university friends (with plenty of half-drunk coffee cups on the table); eating food that was too spicy for you on that honeymoon in Bangkok, and so much more... The final moment now arrives. You accept your fate graciously, passing into the unknown, just as countless others have done before you.

You scoff in the face of naysayers who tell you that your goals are impossible to attain under ordinary circumstances. “I am no ordinary person,” you think to yourself, reaching for the skies. ...and sail the skies you do, because you don’t know how to take ‘no’ for an answer, making an impact on the world in your own, personal way.

You are now past your prime. Your youthful days of adventure feel like a distant dream now – scaling that mountain peak with friends from university, obtaining your master’s degree, achieving that elusive dream physique, nailing that hard-earned promotion – these and more have all come and gone in a blink of an eye. All you do now, today, tomorrow, every day, is to follow a mundane routine that seems to have no end in sight - the crowded commute to work, staring at a computer all day, endless meetings, leaving the office after the sun sets, replying to emails after you get home (when you really shouldn’t), weekends at the shopping mall, a nice holiday outside of Singapore once or twice a year (in yet another city filled with shopping malls). It’s been a long while since you’ve felt a genuine sense of achievement, and one day, you finally pause and ask yourself, “Is this everything there is to life, in between birth and death?” You ponder for a while, shrug, then crumple up that sheet of waste paper you've been holding onto for the past ten minutes, tossing it into the bin. Time to stare at the computer again.

2nd Prize winner of the 2008 Dimitri Mitropoulos International Competition, Singaporean conductor Joshua Kangming Tan’s rise to prominence on the international scene has been marked by successful debuts in Carnegie Hall, Philharmonie Berlin, Mariinsky Hall and Bunkamura. A graduate of The Juilliard School and the Eastman School of Music (High Distinction), he is an awardee of numerous scholarships and awards, such as the Young Artist Award, Singapore (2011), Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation Award, NAC-Shell Scholarship, and the SSO/MOE Scholarship. Joshua has conducted orchestras all around the world. These orchestras include the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra, Beethoven Bonn Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Urals Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, Sapporo Symphony Orchestra, Okayama Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Evergreen Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, Juilliard Orchestra amongst others. He has studied with various eminent conductors—James DePreist, Charles Dutoit, David Zinman and Kurt Masur—and worked with many others, such as Michael Tilson Thomas, Ingo Metzmacher and George Manahan. Known as a versatile conductor, Joshua is at home with symphonic, operatic and ballet works. His substantial repertoire for opera includes La Traviata, Rigoletto, Der Fliegende Holländer, Lohengrin, Carmen, Don Giovanni, Madama Butterfly, Così fan tutte, Turandot, among others. He has also served as cover conductor for Christoph Eschenbach and Lorin Maazel. He is also equally adept with music for ballet, film and multimedia. For the latter, his extensive work include Disney’s Fantasia and Pixar, all of BBC’s Blue Planet Series, West Side Story, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, James Bond and more. The Singapore premiere of Bernstein’s Mass, conducted by Joshua, was voted the best classical concert of the year 2018 by the Straits Times. For an unprecedented second year, his performance of the opera Don Pasquale was also voted the best classical concert of the year 2019 by the Straits Times. Joshua is presently Principal Conductor of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra and Director of the Asia Virtuosi. He has served successful stints as Associate Conductor of the Singapore SYmphony Orchestra, Resident Conductor of the National Center for the Performing Arts (China) Orchestra, and as Principal Conductor of the Guiyang Symphony Orchestra. His portfolios include being at the helm of Symphony 924, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and the Recording Industry Association Singapore. MARGARET CHEN Margaret Chen is organist and educator. She continues to be a regional consultant for major organ projects and celebrates 40 years of teaching at the Singapore Bible College School of Church Music. SHANE THIO Shane Thio is a prolific pianist and accompanist. He was the inaugural recipient of the Young Artist Award, Singapore (1992) and has been a répétiteur with Singapore Dance Theatre, TheatreWorks and Singapore Lyric Opera. VIOLIN PANEL MEMBERS JOSHUA TAN Joshua Tan is a conductor, at home with symphonic, operatic and ballet works. A graduate of The Juilliard School and the Eastman School of Music, he is an awardee of numerous scholarships and awards including the Young Artist Award, Singapore (2011). LYNNETTE SEAH Lynnette Seah was the acting Leader at the inception of the SSO in January 1979, and was its Co-Concertmaster until 2019. She was awarded with the Cultural Medallion in 2006 and honoured with the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame Award in 2014. MATTHIEU ARAMA Matthieu Arama is an internationally-acclaimed violinist who was a top laureate of the Montreal International Violin Competition in 2003. He is a Professor at Pôle d'Enseignement Supérieur de Musique et de Bordeaux-Aquitaine.
