S ing a p or e S y mp hon y Or c he s t r a HELLO! The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) was born in 1979 - the orchestra first started playing music 40 years ago! We have many musicians. Some play string instruments (like violin and cello), wind instruments (like flute and trumpet) and percussion (like drums and cymbals). At the orchestra, we want to make beautiful music that will touch your heart and make your life more colourful.

The SSO usually plays in a concert hall like this one you’re sitting in. But we want to show everyone how beautiful classical music is, so sometimes we have concerts in schools near your home. Sometimes we even play in the Botanic Gardens - you can have a picnic while listening to the music!

Our big concerts are held at the Esplanade Concert Hall - the giant durian!

That’s a big concert hall that can fit 1,800 people. But when we want to play small pieces of chamber music or when we play fun music for everybody or for families like yours, we will come back to the beautiful Victoria Concert Hall, our beloved Home of the SSO.

J O S HU A TAN conductor

Joshua Tan is Associate Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Principal Conductor of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra and Director of the Asia Virtuosi. His rise to prominence in the universe has been marked by successful missions in Carnegie Hall, Philharmonie Berlin, Mariinsky Hall and Bunkamura.

A graduate of The Juilliard School and the Eastman School of Music (High Distinction), he is an awardee of numerous scholarships and awards, such as the Young Artist Award, Singapore (2011), Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation Award, NAC-Shell Scholarship, and the SSO/MOE Scholarship.

Tan has conducted orchestras all around the galaxy, in the starbases of Singapore, China, Japan, Taiwan, Macau, Russia, Germany, and America. A versatile conductor, Tan is at home with both symphonic and operatic works, as well as ballet productions and music for film/ multimedia.

Captain Alasdair Malloy is known throughout the galaxy as a concert presenter, percussionist, glass harmonica player, programme deviser and arranger. He is highly acclaimed for producing unique educational and family concert programmes, covering everything from mathematics, science, and sport to magic, mystery and pirates. He was Principal percussionist and a regular soloist with the BBC Concert Orchestra for over 25 years. As a concert presenter, Alasdair regularly appears with major orchestras in Europe and Asia, in the Earth Sector.

Sunrise from Also Sprach Zarathustra

by Richard Strauss The sun rises in a blaze of glory with trumpet fanfares followed by dramatic chords for the full orchestra. This is one of the most famous “sunrise themes” in classical music, especially after it was used in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Star Wars Main Theme

by John Williams John Williams is the Superhero of the Soundtrack, composer of the famous Star Wars music, with heroic melodies for the brass over dramatic rhythms in the percussion interspersed with expressive strings. This theme can be heard in all of the Star Wars epics.

Star Trek TV Theme

by Alexander Courage In the 1960s, humans landed on the moon.

Everyone thought that a new future of space exploration had begun. In 1966, Star Trek was born, perhaps the most influential science fiction TV series in history. Its original theme still conjures up a futuristic and optimistic image of our future.

Perpetuum Mobile

by Johann Strauss II The title means “perpetual motion” - movement that goes on forever and this would be the ultimate power source for any spaceship!

Mars from The Planets

by Gustav Holst Holst’s The Planets depicts each of the planets using their mythical backgrounds. Mars was the God of War. A relentless rhythm set over five beats gives it an aggressive character, while the orchestra summons the heat of battle with militaristic brass instruments.

Morning from Peer Gynt

by Edvard Grieg Grieg’s Morning conjures up the fresh clear air of a peaceful morning. We’re using it today to represent the planet Venus, often referred to as the Morning Star.

The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba

by Georg Frideric Handel Time to learn how to fly our spaceship! Let’s find out what all these complicated controls do! This famous piece depicts a visit from the Queen of Sheba, who is amazed by the splendour of King Solomon’s royal court. Prepare to join in with the Royal Wave as Handel is given a Majestic Monarchic Makeover!

A Little Night Music

by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Mozart’s customary energy and flair makes this an appropriate piece for us as we travel through the stars back to Planet Earth.

The Imperial March from Star Wars

by John Williams Each of the main characters in Star Wars has their own musical theme which you can hear when they appear. The Imperial March is instantly recognisable. It is the dark side of the Force!

by John Williams John Williams’ music for the 1982 film about a boy called Elliot and his stranded alien friend perfectly captures the innocence of childhood and the plight and desperation of the extra-terrestrial (which means someone from outside Earth) trying to get back to his home planet.

The Duel of the Fates from Star Wars

by John Williams This exciting tune accompanied Jedi heroes QuiGon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi as they fought in an epic lightsaber duel with the evil Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. It is now one of the most recognisable themes from Star Wars.
