Hello!

The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) was born in 1979 - that's almost 40 years ago when the orchestra first started playing music! Your mommy and daddy were kids just like you when the SSO was growing up.

Our Music Director is Mr Lan Shui, he is our most important conductor. We have many musicians.

Some play string instruments (like violin and cello), wind instruments (like flute and trumpet) and percussion (like drums and cymbals). At the orchestra, we want to make beautiful music that will touch your heart and make your life more colourful.

The SSO usually plays in a concert hall like this one you’re sitting in. But we want to show everyone how beautiful classical music is, so sometimes we have concerts in schools near your home. Sometimes we even play in the Botanic Gardens - you can have a picnic while listening to the music!

Our big concerts are held at the Esplanade Concert Hall - the giant durian at Marina Bay! That can fit 1,800 people. That's a big hall! But when we want to play small pieces of chamber music or when we play fun music for everybody or for families like yours, we will come back to the beautiful Victoria Concert Hall, our beloved Home of the SSO.

Uncle Peter Moore is going to be your conductor today! Uncle Peter was born in London, England but later moved to Australia, quite near Singapore.

Besides conducting, he is also a very skillful bassoon player. (What is a bassoon? Maybe you can ask him later!) Uncle Peter has played in and conducted many orchestras. Let's count them:

1 Scottish Chamber Orchestra, 2 West Australian Symphony Orchestra, 3 Ensemble Vasse, 4 Western Australian Ballet Company, 5 Australian Chamber Orchestra, 6 Tasmanian Symphony, 7 Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, 8 Faith Court Orchestra, 9 Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, 10 Australian Youth Orchestra, 11 Orchestra Victoria, 12 The Sydney Sinfonia, 13 Hong Kong Sinfonietta; and of course 14 Singapore Symphony Orchestra

Wow! Uncle Peter is also a Music Teacher. He teaches at the School of Music in the University of Western Australia. He also teaches kids like you in special concerts like the Babies' Proms.

In fact, Uncle Peter has done so much for music that in the year 2000, the Australian Government gave him a very special medal called The Order of Australia. Thank you, Uncle Peter!

For today's concert, Uncle Peter will teach you about the orchestra and all its instruments. He will also show you how the music works. We hope you have lots of fun with him! :)
