SINGAPORE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Since its founding in 1979, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been Singapore’s flagship orchestra, touching lives through classical music and providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene in the cosmopolitan city-state. In addition to its subscription series concerts, the orchestra is well-loved for its outdoor and community appearances, and its significant role educating the young people of Singapore.

The SSO has also earned an international reputation for its orchestral virtuosity, having garnered sterling reviews for its overseas tours and many successful recordings.

The SSO makes its performing home at the 1,800-seat state-of-the-art Esplanade Concert Hall. More intimate works and all outreach and community performances take place at the 673-seat Victoria Concert Hall, the home of the SSO. The orchestra performs 100 concerts a year, and its versatile repertoire spans all-time favourites and orchestral masterpieces to exciting cutting-edge premieres.

Bridging the musical traditions of East and West, Singaporean and Asian musicians and composers are regularly showcased in the concert season.

Since Lan Shui assumed the position of Music Director in 1997, the SSO has performed in Europe, Asia and the United States. In May 2016, the SSO was invited to perform at the Dresden Music Festival and Prague Spring International Music Festival. In 2014 the SSO’s debut at the 120th BBC Proms in London received critical acclaim in the major UK newspapers The Guardian and Telegraph.

J o shu a Ta n conductor Second Prize winner of the 2008 Dimitris Mitropoulos International Competition, Singaporean conductor Joshua Tan’s rise to prominence on the international scene has been marked by successful debuts in Carnegie Hall, Philharmonie Berlin, Mariinsky Hall, Bunkamura, Shanghai, Beijing and Taiwan. He was featured as the top Singaporean musical talent in 2009 by the Singapore newspaper, Lianhe Zaobao.

He has also won numerous awards and scholarships, including the Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation Award, NAC-Shell Scholarship, SSO/MOE Scholarship and is the first-ever recipient of the Charles Schiff Conducting Prize from the Juilliard School for outstanding achievement. In 2011, he received the Young Artist Award of Singapore.

Tan has studied with leading conductors James DePreist, Charles Dutoit, David Zinman and Kurt Masur.

He has conducted the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra, Beethoven Bonn Orchestra, St Petersburg State Symphony, Russiche Kammerphilharmonie, National Center for the Performing Arts Orchestra (NCPA), China Philharmonic, Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic and many more orchestras from China and Japan.

In opera, Tan has conducted La traviata, Tosca, Rigoletto, Il barbiere di Siviglia, La Cenerentola, Der fliegende Holländer, Lohengrin, Carmen, Don Giovanni, Manon Lescaut, Madama Butterfly, Cosi fan tutte and was also cover conductor for Christoph Eschenbach and Lorin Maazel. Adept with film/multimedia, Tan is a Disney-approved conductor and gave the Asian premiere of Fantasia. He has also conducted for the BBC’s Planet Earth Series.

Tan is presently Associate Conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Principal Conductor of the Guiyang Symphony Orchestra. He was Resident Conductor, NCPA Orchestra from 2009 to 2012.

Highlights of the 2016/17 season include debuts with Sinfonia Varsovia, Japan Century Orchestra, Swan Lake and Giselle in Tokyo, Turandot, L’elisir d’amore in Singapore. Tan is a graduate of the Juilliard School and the Eastman School of Music (High Distinction).

V ic tor Y e r r id show creator and puppeteer Master puppeteer Victor Yerrid brings the stage and the music to life with his artistry. Victor is a world-renowned puppeteer whose work in children’s television includes Mutt & Stuff, Word Party, Sid The Science Kid, Pajanimals, ​Sigmund & the Sea Monsters, Hannah Montana, Sesame Street, Bear In The Big Blue House, and Between The Lions. Other TV & film projects include Men In Black II, The Hangover, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Team America, Robot Chicken, Family Guy, Community, Angel, Greg The Bunny, The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and the 2010 Grammy Awards.

The son of a piano teacher, Victor’s early years were spent plunking out tunes on the piano and singing songs in the back of his mother’s ’67 Chevy. He eventually took up classical percussion and was accepted to the world-renowned Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Upon graduation, Victor began playing with the Philadelphia Opera Orchestra and toured Japan with a chamber orchestra led by New York Philharmonic conductor, Alan Gilbert.

Today, Victor continues his work as a producer and show creator, and still insists on playing with puppets.

Je ss Mc K ay puppeteer Jess McKay’s puppetry credits include Henson Alternative’s ‘Puppet Up’, Smashed Potatoes with Muffalo Potato, Swazzle, Maker Studios, Soul Pancake, Insomniac, Flock Theatre, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, San Francisco Sketch Festival, Life is Beautiful Festival, Groundlings, Upright Citizen’s Brigade, and various other television and film projects.

L udw ig Va n B e e t hoV e n (1770– 1 8 2 7 ) Symphony No. 6 in F Major “Pastoral” In his sixth Symphony, titled “Pastoral Symphony, or Recollections of Country Life”, Beethoven shows us his love of nature. In each of the five movements, or sections, he expressed his feelings about a different aspect of living in the midst of nature. The Symphony was inspired by his regular walks in the serene and peaceful Viennese countryside.

The leisurely First Movement depicts the “awakening of cheerful feelings upon arriving in the country”, with pleasant and radiant melodies which may put a smile on your face!

We are next led to a “scene by the brook” in the Second Movement. A calmly rippling tune continues the sunny mood, with trees providing a welcome shade for both the listener and a chorus of birds sung by the woodwinds. The flute sings like the nightingale, the oboe evokes the quail, and the clarinets sound the cuckoo’s call – all flitting through this picturesque landscape.

In the Third Movement, Beethoven leads us next to a town to enjoy the “merry dances of the country folk”, before the “Storm” of the Fourth Movement suddenly crashes in.

It begins with a drizzle, followed by thunder and lightning suddenly ripping through the orchestra and sending everyone scurrying in search of shelter from the violent downpour.

In the Fifth Movement, the shepherds express their “thankful feelings after the Storm” with blissful joy and musical delight.
