SINGAPORE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) was born in 1979 — that's almost 40 years ago when the orchestra first started playing music! Your mommy and daddy were kids just like you when the SSO was growing up. Our Music Director is Mr Lan Shui, he is our most important conductor. We have many musicians. Some play string instruments (like violin and cello), wind instruments (like flute and trumpet) and percussion (like drums and cymbals). At the orchestra, we want to make beautiful music that will touch your heart and make your life more colourful. The SSO usually plays in a concert hall like the one you're sitting in. But we want to show everyone how beautiful classical music is, so sometimes we have concerts in schools near your home. Sometimes we even play in the Botanic Gardens — you can have a picnic while listening to the music! Our big concerts are held at the Esplanade Concert Hall — the giant durian at Marina Bay! That can fit 1,800 people. That's a big hall! But when we want to play small pieces of chamber music or when we play fun music for everybody or for families like yours, we will come back to the beautiful Victoria Concert Hall, our beloved Home of the SSO.
P e t e r Moor e conductor Uncle Peter is going to be your conductor today! Uncle Peter was born in London, England, but later moved to Australia, quite near Singapore. When he was 8 years old, he learnt the violin and piano, and started learning the bassoon at 17. He loved the bassoon so much that he went on to play it for more than 30 years! (Shhhhhh… can you keep a secret? One time, in a concert, Uncle Peter’s music score had been accidentally removed from his music stand. Oops! When the orchestra started and Uncle Peter realized he didn’t know what notes to play, he had to pretend to play along. He calls this playing the “air bassoon”! Luckily for Uncle Peter, it was a very loud piece of music with no bassoon solos, so no one noticed!)
Uncle Peter has also conducted many orchestras such as the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, the Western Australian Ballet Company, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and of course the Singapore Symphony Orchestra that is going to play today. Uncle Peter is also a Music Teacher. He teaches at the University of Western Australia and the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts. He also teaches children like you in special concerts like the Babies' Proms, across many different countries. In fact, Uncle Peter has done so much for music that in 2000, the Australian Government gave him a very special medal called The Order of Australia. Thank you, Uncle Peter! For today’s concert, Uncle Peter will teach you about the orchestra and all its instruments. He will also show you how the music works. We hope you have lots of fun with him!
