COVER STORY
Wyandotte Wine Crawl uncorks an evening of fun The Wyandotte Wine Crawl took place August 15 along the Downtown Wyandotte Riverfront, bringing an evening of wine sampling, live entertainment, food, shopping, and activities to the waterfront. The event gave attendees the opportunity to explore a variety of sampling stations while enjoying the atmosphere of Downtown Wyandotte. Guests received 12 wine and beverage samples along with a commemorative glass, making the crawl an interactive way to spend the evening with friends. Throughout the event, sampling stations offered a selection of wines and other beverages, along with swag, giveaways, and surprises. A mystery cellar experience added another element for guests to discover as they made their way through the event. Music and entertainment were also a major part of the evening. Live music provided a backdrop for attendees as they visited the different stations, socialized and enjoyed the riverfront setting. Additional entertainment created a lively atmosphere throughout the night. Guests could also participate in several hands-on activities. A floral experience allowed attendees to create their own bouquets, while another station offered the opportunity to design a custom coaster. Selfie and photo stations were available for guests looking to capture memories from the evening, with additional chances to win prizes. Food and shopping were available throughout the evening as well, giving attendees options beyond
the wine and beverage sampling. The combination of food, shopping, music, and interactive activities made the event more than just a tasting experience. With wine and beverage samples, a commemorative glass, live music, giveaways,
hands-on activities, photo opportunities, food, shopping and waterfront views, the Wyandotte Wine Crawl offered a full evening of entertainment for those attending one of the last events of the summer.

Garden Club Shares Harvests With the Community The Wyandotte Garden Club, originally founded in 1924 and one of the oldest garden clubs in Michigan, relaunched in February and welcomes new members interested in gardening and becoming more involved in the community. As part of its community garden efforts, free produce bins were recently placed outside the Wyandotte Community Garden for gardeners to share extra produce from their harvests. Neighbors are also welcome to contribute extra homegrown fruits and vegetables. Anything placed in the bins is free for anyone who could use it.
homegrown food reach neighbors in the community. The garden would like to clarify, however, that each individual plot is cared for by the gardener assigned to it, and produce grown within those plots belongs to the individual gardeners. The distinction allows the garden to encourage community sharing while also respecting the time and effort put into maintaining each personal garden plot.
The produce-sharing effort provides a way for gardeners to make use of extra harvests while helping fresh,
The Wyandotte Garden Club prides itself as a community group designed to connect gardeners of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced growers. Members have opportunities to learn, share gardening knowledge, and connect with others who share an interest in growing. The club is a proud member of the Michigan Garden Club, Inc. and the National Garden Club, Inc., continuing its connection to the larger
gardening community while building on its long history in Wyandotte. The relaunch marked a new chapter for the historic organization and provides residents with opportunities to get involved, learn about gardening, and become part of a growing local community. Those interested in gardening and getting involved with the Wyandotte Garden Club can learn more at wyandottegardenclub.org.

Wyandotte Teacher Named Unified Champion School Liaison of the Year
Congratulations went to Wyandotte Public School’s Melisa Swift, a teacher at the Lincoln Center, who was named the Unified Champion School Liaison of the Year. Swift was selected from more than 750 nominations across the state for the honor, recognizing her dedication to creating a more inclusive and welcoming school environment for students. The recognition is part of the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools program, which works to promote social inclusion in schools for
students with and without disabilities. Through sports, student leadership, and schoolwide activities, the program encourages acceptance, teamwork, and meaningful participation. As a Unified Champion School Liaison, Swift helps support efforts to ensure students with disabilities feel welcomed and included in school activities, opportunities, and events. Being chosen from more than 750 nominations marks a significant accomplishment for Swift and is a proud achievement for the Lincoln Center and the Wyandotte community.

Bears Bounce Back with Big Win Over Trenton At press deadline for the Wyandotte Warrior, the Wyandotte Bears hold a 1-1 record after an impressive bounceback victory over Trenton. The Bears opened the season with a 45-15 loss to Gibraltar Carlson but responded in Week 2 with a 35-21 win over Trenton. DJ Roston, Paxton Luczak, Cole Cline and Logan Cumiskey, who scored twice, all found the end zone for Wyandotte. Cline also threw two touchdown passes, while Malik Daniels came up with a key fourth-quarter interception to help seal the victory. Wyandotte controlled the line of scrimmage with strong offensive line play and made several key defensive stops in the second half. The Bears also swept Trenton at all three levels, with the varsity winning 35-21, the JV winning 33-26 and the freshman team earning a 14-8 victory. It was a strong all-around showing for Wyandotte and a great way to respond after the season-opening loss.

Big Goals Don’t Happen Overnight—They Happen Daily
Most of us have at least one big financial goal. Maybe it’s buying your first car, paying off debt, purchasing a home, building savings, helping your children prepare for the future, or feeling more confident about retirement. Big goals can be exciting. They can also feel overwhelming when we focus only on how far away the finish line seems. In his bestselling book Atomic Habits, author James Clear explores a simple idea: small actions, repeated consistently, can produce meaningful results over time. It’s an idea that applies particularly well to our financial lives. Look Beyond the Goal Consider a teenager who wants to buy their first car. The vehicle may be the goal, but reaching it begins long before they start shopping. Each paycheck provides an opportunity to save. Each purchase involves a decision about whether spending today is more important than what they’re working toward. Regularly paying attention to their account helps them understand where their money is actually going. None of those individual decisions will buy a car. Together, however, they can move that teenager closer to the goal while developing money-management skills that can last a lifetime. The same idea works whether you’re 16, 36 or 66. Someone hoping to purchase a home may consistently set aside money from each paycheck. Someone paying down debt may regularly put extra money toward a balance. Someone preparing for retirement may gradually increase contributions as their income grows.
The actions may seem small. Their power comes from repeating them. Ask a Different Question When pursuing a financial goal, we naturally ask: “What do I need to do to reach my goal?” Try asking another question: “What kind of person reaches this goal—and what would that person do today?” Someone who wants to build savings becomes someone who saves consistently. Someone who wants strong credit becomes someone who takes financial obligations seriously. Someone who wants greater control over their finances becomes someone who pays attention to their money before there’s a problem. Instead of relying on motivation to make one dramatic change, you’re developing behaviors that become part of how you manage money. Make the Next Good Decision Easier Look for ways to make good financial decisions easier to repeat. If you’re saving for something important, consider automatically directing part of each paycheck toward that
BIG
goal before you have an opportunity to spend it. If you’re tempted by an unplanned purchase, create a little friction. Give yourself a day to decide whether it’s worth taking money away from something you want more. And if you have a teenager earning their own money, give them opportunities to make real financial decisions while you’re still available to provide guidance. Learning to manage $50 or $100 today can provide valuable experience before they’re responsible for much larger decisions. The objective isn’t perfection. It’s making the next good decision easier. Small Habits Can Lead to Big Opportunities Financial progress rarely comes from one extraordinary decision. More often, it’s the result of ordinary decisions made consistently. Over time, those decisions can create opportunities. Savings can become a down payment on a first vehicle or home. Responsible borrowing and repayment can help build a strong credit history. Better spending decisions can create room for the things that matter most. Whatever your goal, don’t be discouraged because you can’t accomplish it today. Instead, ask yourself: What’s one small action I can begin repeating today that will move me in the right direction? At Downriver Community Federal Credit Union, we believe Big Goals Start Here—because the small habits you build today can help make tomorrow’s biggest accomplishments possible.
Your teen has big goals. Give them a place to start.

RHS Robotics Connects With Community During Sponsor Day Wyandotte Robotics held a successful Sponsor Day, giving its BearBots an opportunity to spend the day throughout Downtown Wyandotte while connecting with local businesses and introducing the community to the robotics program. Throughout the day, students visited businesses, introduced themselves, and shared information about the Wyandotte Robotics program. The event provided more than an opportunity to seek sponsorships. It also gave students a chance to build confidence, make connections, and experience what it meant to be part of the BearBots. The team expressed its appreciation to the local businesses that took time to speak with students, learn more about the program, and support their efforts. Contributions and community support help provide students with additional opportunities to learn, compete, create, and grow. Wyandotte Robotics offers students hands-on experiences in areas including engineering, programming, teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership. Through their work with the program, students develop skills that extend beyond the robotics competition season and could benefit them well into the future. Sponsor Day highlights the strong connection between the BearBots and the Wyandotte community. Those interested in supporting or sponsoring the BearBots can learn more at wyandotterobotics.com.

Life: America’s Greatest Promise
Wyandotte Rotary recently celebrated the recipients of its inaugural Wyandotte Rotary Community Grants following the launch of the new grant opportunity. When the program was introduced, Rotary members were unsure what to expect. With more than 125 applications received, it quickly became clear just how many incredible organizations were doing meaningful work throughout the community. Selecting just three recipients was not an easy decision. In its first year, Wyandotte Rotary awarded a total of $10,000 in community grants. Mi Cookie Project received $5,000, while The Golden Leash and Downriver Family Connections LLC each received $2,500.
The grants were made possible through the support of community members who supported Rotary fundraisers, attended events, and believed in the organization’s commitment to serving the local community. Funds raised through Wyandotte Rotary were returned directly to the community through initiatives such as these grants. Wyandotte Rotary also welcomed individuals who were interested in volunteering, meeting new people, supporting local causes, or finding meaningful ways to give back. The inaugural grant program demonstrates the organization’s commitment to its motto of Service Above Self and highlights the many ways Wyandotte Rotary continues to make a difference in the local community.

Grosse Ile Soccer Rolls to 4-2 Start At the press deadline for the Grosse Ile Grand, the Grosse Ile boys soccer team is off to a strong 4-2 start to the season, showing steady improvement and plenty of early-season momentum. The Red Devils opened the season against Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett, dropping their season opener 7-1. The team quickly bounced back, however, using its own Red Devil Invitational as an opportunity to get back on track. Grosse Ile won two of its three matches at the invitational, earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Dearborn Fordson before putting together an impressive 5-0 shutout against Boyne City. The Red Devils carried that momentum into their next two matches, grabbing a two-game winning streak. Grosse Ile defeated Detroit Aztec Eagles Academy 2-0 before following it up with a 4-1 victory over Monroe Jefferson. The team’s early success is a product of preparation that began well before the regular season. SEE PAGE 16

In addition to their culinary experience, the students attended a screening of Coldwater Kitchen and met several of the chefs featured in the film. The experience provided a unique opportunity to see the culinary industry from a professional perspective and learn what it took to work in a fast-paced, highlevel event environment. This incredible opportunity was offered through Michigan ProStart and the Michigan Hospitality Foundation. Through their participation, Riverview student chefs gained valuable industry experience while representing their schools with professionalism and enthusiasm. Their dedication, work ethic, and commitment to learning stood out throughout the event. Riverview School District was proud of the way these students represented their schools and demonstrated the professionalism and passion they brought to every aspect of the experience. SEE PAGE 5
