Wyandotte DECA recognized The Wyandotte DECA chapter recently competed at the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Atlanta, following a highly successful run at the DECA State Career Development Conference earlier this year. At the international level, students presented their Project Management and School-Based Enterprise projects. While the chapter did not produce national finalists, members were still able to gain valuable experience competing among top students from across the country and showcasing the work they
developed throughout the year. Despite the outcome at ICDC, the chapter received significant recognition by being named one of only four "Outstanding Chapters" in the State of Michigan. The honor highlights the program's overall excellence, student involvement, leadership development, and consistent impact within both the school and the broader community. Her first major publication, The Pride of Wyandotte: The History of Roosevelt High School, was released in 2003 and marked the beginning of her long commitment to preserving the school's and city's legacy. In 2009, Theodore Paluszewski Roosevelt High School honored her as a Distinguished Graduate for her contributions. That same year, she presented thenMichigan Governor Jennifer Granholm with a copy of the November/December issue of Michigan History magazine featuring her cover story, "A High School for the Ages in Wyandotte," further highlighting the historical significance of the community's landmark school. Her research has also had a lasting impact beyond publications. Through her work on Wyandotte at War,
Paluszewski identified several World War II servicemen whose names had been missing from the city's memorial. As a result, eleven names were officially added to Wyandotte's WWII monument in 2023, in partnership with local veterans' groups. She was later invited as one of the dignitaries to help unveil the updated plaque. Paluszewski also played a central role in preserving Wyandotte's artistic heritage, leading efforts to restore five rare 1942 WPA murals at Theodore Roosevelt High School. She demonstrated the careful cleaning process on a section of the historic murals during restoration and helped organize a fundraising campaign that raised nearly $100,000. Following the project, she co-authored a restoration guide that has since been archived in the Library of Congress, ensuring the work can serve as a model for future preservation efforts. Through her scholarship, advocacy, and hands-on preservation work, Paluszewski has helped ensure Wyandotte's history is not only remembered but actively preserved for future generations - making her recognition as the Citizen Award recipient a fitting honor.

Strong debut for Wyandotte girls flag football program The inaugural season for Wyandotte girls flag football has gotten off to an impressive and energetic start, as the new program continues to come together quickly and build strong early chemistry on the field. After a series of successful preseason scrimmages, the Lady Bears opened official play with a doubleheader against the Southgate Titans and the Allen Park Jaguars. Wyandotte made an immediate statement, defeating Southgate 20-12 before following itup with a dominant 22-0 shutout over Allen Park. The early results highlighted both offensive execution and a rapidly developing defense in the program's first official games. Standout performances led the way in the opening doubleheader, with two "Bears of the Day" honors awarded. Emma Jordan earned the recognition after a strong all-around performance, recording two touchdowns, one interception, and an extra point. Quarterback Annie Zieger also delivered
a standout showing, totaling 400 passing yards across both games (156 in the first and 244 in the second) while throwing six touchdown passes with zero interceptions, showing early command of the offense. Wyandotte carried that momentum into another dominant win over Lincoln Park Railsplitters, securing a 21-0 victory to remain undefeated early in the season. The defense once again controlled the game from start to finish. Amelia Affholter was named "Bear of the
Game" in that matchup for a breakout defensive performance that included a pick-six, multiple tackles for loss, and three flag pulls. Her efforts helped anchor a shutdown defensive effort that kept Lincoln Park off the scoreboard. With explosive offense, disciplined defense, and standout individual performances across multiple games, the Wyandotte girls have quickly established themselves as one of the most promising new programs in their inaugural girls flag football season.

Roosevelt rumbles through competition with 13-game surge The RHS softball team has continued its impressive season with strong momentum, posting an 20-4 record at the time of press for the Wyandotte Warrior. Much of the team's success has been driven by a dominant 13-game winning streak that showcased both offensive firepower and consistent defensive execution. The run began with a statement 11-5 victory over Orchard Lake St. Mary's, setting the tone for a stretch of confident, well-rounded performances. Wyandotte followed that win with one of its most productive offensive showings of the season, sweeping Dearborn Edsel Ford in back-to-back games by scores ofl8-3 and 16-0. The team's lineup consistently generated runs while applying pressure from top to bottom. The Lady Bears also delivered a commanding defensive performance in a 15-0 shutout over Lincoln Park, where pitching and fielding combined to completely control the game from start to finish. Another key win during

the streak came against Gibraltar Carlson, where Wyandotte secured a 13-3 victory to continue its string of decisive results. Across the winning stretch, Wyandotte displayed depth,
consistency, and strong execution on both sides of the ball. The combination of timely hitting, solid pitching, and disciplined play has positioned the Bears as one of the more competitive teams early in the season.

Wyandotte crew gains momentum heading toward state competition The Wyandotte Roosevelt crew has opened the 2026 season with a strong and competitive start, gaining momentum across multiple regattas while continuing to develop depth across both the boys' and girls' programs. The season began at the Hebda Cup, where Wyandotte faced 11 teams in its first regatta of the year. Both varsity 4+ boats delivered standout performances, sweeping their races and earning gold medals to open the season. The boys' and girls' varsity 4+ crews each secured first-place finishes, giving Wyandotte an early highlight and strong
foundation for the rest of the spring. At the Martindale Sprints, the program continued to build experience through tightly contested races. The Men's Varsity 4+ and Women's Varsity 4+ both earned bronze medals, with all boats showing continued improvement and gaining valuable raceday experience against strong competition. The event reinforced the team's progress as they refined technique and race execution. At the Midwest Regatta, the Bears faced some of their toughest competition yet, racing against top crews from across the region. Several
Wyandotte boats advanced out of the semifinals, with strong B Final finishes including a 2nd-place result in the Men's V4+, a 3rd-place finish in the Women's Novice 8+, and a 6th-place finish in the Women's Varsity 8+. The regatta provided valuable experience against high-level Midwest programs and further tested the team's growth. With multiple medals, strong finishes, and continued development across multiple boats, the Wyandotte rowing program enters the heart of the season with momentum building and states approaching on the horizon.

Wyandotte Animal Shelter helps find furever homes By SYDNEY HAMILTON The Wyandotte Animal Shelter provides a second chance for cats and dogs at 1170 Grove Street, welcoming animals whether found roaming or surrendered. The shelter has the capacity to care for approximately 35 cats and 10 dogs. The Downriver Central Animal Control in Southgate serves as the intake shelter, holding animals until space becomes available at the Wyandotte Animal Shelter. All veterinary care for sick and injured animals is funded by Pound Pals Downriver, a private, nonprofit animal welfare organization supported by donations. Pound Pals Downriver also hosts an annual spaghetti dinner and garage sale to raise funds for lifesaving veterinary care. Tom Abraham, director of Pound Pals Downriver, shared the importance of volunteering. "We're making the pets more comfortable while they wait for a home," Abraham said. "One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering is seeing those pets that you have fallen in love with go to homes that have also fallen in love with them." During his 18 years of volunteering, Abraham has witnessed numerous heartwarming rehabilitations. Among them was Scooby, a Cane Corso whose autoimmune disease deteriorated the muscles in his jaw, preventing him from opening his mouth more than an inch. With proper veterinary care, Scooby eventually regained full jaw mobility and was later adopted into his furever home. After moving to the Downriver area
and purchasing her first home, Meg Buckley, who began volunteering in 2024, was not only focused on
improving her well-being but also on the well-being of dogs. "I remember feeling a little down and thinking
about what would make me feel happier, and I immediately thought of dogs," Buckley said. "I searched for shelters in the area, came across the Wyandotte Animal Shelter, and applied that weekend. It was the best decision I've ever made." Adopter Sarah Larkins reflected on bringing her new furry friend home. On social media, she wrote, "He is the cutest, most loving, sweetest, and silly little boy. It took his sister about a month to love him just as much as we do, but she now has a snuggle buddy and playtime partner for life!" Those interested in adopting must schedule an appointment and complete an adoption application. The adoption fee is $100 for cats and $150 for dogs, which covers spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and testing for feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukemia. The shelter relies on volunteers to assist with dog walking, cat socialization, feeding, grooming, and kennel or cage cleaning. In some cases, with the assistance of volunteers, long-time shelter residents are enrolled in obedience training to increase their likelihood of adoption. Those interested in volunteering must complete a volunteer form. The shelter also accepts donations, including dog and cat food, cat litter, cleaning supplies, blankets, and toys. Minutes Matter: What Neurologists Want You to Know ven symptoms that resolve quickly can signal a stroke - and delaying care can limit treatment options. During National Stroke Awareness Month, neurologists at the Michigan Institute for Neurological Disorders (MIND) are encouraging the public to recognize that stroke symptoms are not always sudden or severe - and even mild or temporary symptoms should never be ignored.

"A stroke requires immediate emergency care-and ongoing neurological management after discharge," said Dr. Brandon Vieder, a board-certified neurologist and fellowship-trained vascular (stroke) neurology specialist. "It's important to recognize that something is wrong and act immediately. Even mild or improving symptoms can signal a serious event that requires urgent evaluation."
MIND neurologists emphasize that patients experiencing possible stroke symptoms should call 911 rather than drive themselves to the emergency room. Early evaluation and treatment can directly affect recovery outcomes and available treatment options. Stroke Care Doesn't End at the Hospital While stroke treatment begins in the emergency setting, neurologists play an ongoing role in: • Identifying stroke type and underlying cause • Managing medications and reducing future risk • Coordinating rehabilitation and recovery • Guiding patients through the critical first month of recovery

A stroke occurs when a blood clot, plaque, or other particles block blood flow to the brain, or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. A stroke can cause lasting brain damage, long-term disability, or death. According to the American Heart Association's 2026 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics, stroke is now the #4 leading cause of death in the U.S. Nearly 800,000 people in the U.S. have a stroke each year, and it is also a leading cause of serious, long-term disability. Stroke specialists at MIND say some patients delay care because symptoms seem minor, improve quickly, or don't match what they expect a stroke to look like.
