Donald N. Kolcheff Facility Dedication “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” ~ Henry Adams By BILL STEVENSON In keeping with Henry Adams’ astute observation, the Trenton School District will solidify its commitment to excellence in commemorating a new Alumni Center dedicated to long time educator, Donald N. Kolcheff. The center will be “a multipurpose Kolcheff venue for athletics, school activities, and community events honoring the lasting spirit of our alumni and the
legacy of ‘Mister’ Kolcheff.” A special ceremony will be held on Friday, September 25 at Trenton High School located at 2601 Charlton in Trenton. The entire school family and community, both past and present are invited to the dedication festivities: 5:30 P.M: Presentation Ceremony at the THS Auditorium 6:00 P.M: Ribbon Cutting for Kolcheff Alumni Center at Farrar Field 6:45 P.M: Tour of Alumni Center 7:30 P.M: Home Varsity Football Game vs. DeWitt Panthers
There is an afterglow gathering following the football game for all alumni and friends at the 10 Pin Bar and Grill located at 2911 Fort Street in Trenton. Donald Kolcheff had a storied career in the Trenton School District for 36 years. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1965, and earned his Master’s degree in educational administration from Eastern Michigan in 1975. He was a beloved teacher, coach, and principal who was selected as one of the most influential teachers by senior students many times during SEE DEDICATION, PAGE 7

Trenton Gardeners Share Harvest with Community

The Trenton Gardeners continued their tradition of “growing to give” by donating pounds of fresh green beans to the community and Trenton seniors. The gardeners harvested their goods in the garden at the Trenton Cultural Center, where nearly 70 pounds of green beans were collected and shared. Members of the gardening group worked together to pick beans along with the other vegetables grown in the garden.
This year, the group grew four different varieties of green beans, providing an abundant harvest for the community. The garden also featured zinnias planted alongside the vegetables to help attract pollinators. The effort demonstrated how the Trenton Gardeners combined their love of gardening with a commitment to giving back to the community and providing fresh produce to local seniors.

Le Lieu Celebrates One Year in Business In late August, Alyssa Severson, owner of Le Lieu, celebrated the business’ first anniversary. One year earlier, Severson took a chance and opened Le Lieu, beginning her journey as a smallbusiness owner. During her first year, she handled inquiries, gave tours, cleaned the venue, learned the many responsibilities of running a business, and often called on her parents for a helping hand. Throughout the year, Severson had the pleasure of meeting many people and watching them celebrate some of the biggest moments in their lives. Le Lieu hosted baby showers, bridal showers, birthdays, graduations, weddings, anniversaries, and many other special occasions. Severson said it was rewarding to know that Le Lieu had played a small part in creating memories that families and friends would cherish. She expressed her appreciation to everyone who had booked Le Lieu, recommended the venue, left a review, shared its information, or supported the business in other ways.
.. .. She also gave special thanks to her family for their continued support, whether it was recommending Le Lieu, attending workshops, helping with cleaning, lending a hand when needed, or simply being there for her. After one successful year, Severson looked forward to beginning her second year in business. Le Lieu is an events venue available for all your special moments and is located at 2920 West Jefferson.

DEDICATION
Continued from FRONT PAGE his tenure in the district. Kolcheff eventually became superintendent serving from 1997 to 2001. Bill Allen (THS - Class of 1975) is the driving force behind the Kolcheff Alumni Center philanthropy. He remembers Mr. Kolcheff, “He was my football coach and teacher. I was a 130 pound football player, and he saw something in me, and told me to hit the weight room, gain some strength. I did and I grew.” He continued, “Eventually, through his coaching and encouragement, I was able to be named All State, and went on to play college ball at Central Michigan University. He really impacted me and I’m sure hundreds of others. I look back at what he meant to me—he changed my life.”
“Buildings are made of bricks and mortar. Legacies are built through people. The Alumni Center will bring the two together and provide community members a place to share old memories and make new ones. We are forever grateful to Mr. Kolcheff for making Trenton a better place.” ~ Doug Mentzer, TPS Superintendent Allen, now living in Tampa, Florida with kids all through college and a successful career in building construction, wanted to give back. “My heart still belongs to Trenton,” Allen notes, “With the help of my friends, Gregg Svitchan and Mark Lybrook, acting as on-site coordinators, and Superintendent Doug Mentzer, we were able to put this project together.” Superintendent Mentzer concurs, “Buildings are made of bricks and mortar. Legacies are built through
people. The Alumni Center will bring the two together and provide community members a place to share old memories and make new ones. We are forever grateful to Mr. Kolcheff for making Trenton a better place.” Thousands of students and their families have been touched by the lifework of Donald N. Kolcheff. And, more than inscriptions set in stone, the legacy of his work as a teacher, coach, and great leader will be embedded in the hearts of those who had the privilege of his tutelage.
Donations are still welcomed to complete the final stages of the Kolcheff Alumni Center. You can contribute through Venmo or Zelle William G. Allen 813-3852061 Billbuilt4@msn.com or by check Payable to Trenton Public Schools-Kolcheff Alumni Center— Mail to: Bill Allen 226 Sydney Lane Redington Shores, FL 33708. Hope to see you all at the dedication on September 25. Show your Trojan Pride!

Dino Trivia Night a Roaring Good Time at Trenton Library Families enjoyed a roaring good time at Dino Trivia Night at the Trenton Veterans Memorial Library as part of the library’s Summer Reading Program theme, “Unearth a Story.” The family-friendly event invited dinosaur enthusiasts of all ages to put their prehistoric knowledge to the test. Participants answered questions from a variety of categories, including identifying different dinosaurs, beloved fictional dinosaurs and the popular Jurassic Park franchise. In addition to the trivia competition, children had the opportunity to compare their own footprints with those of a Triceratops, adding an educational and entertaining handson activity to the evening. Dinosaur-themed prizes were awarded to the winning trivia team and a raffle winner. The event proved to be a lot of fun, with the children showing just how much they knew about dinosaurs. The parents also held their own and did quite well! The Trenton Veterans Memorial Library thanked everyone who attended and helped make Dino Trivia Night such a fun and memorable event.

SNAP Campers Enjoyed a Summer of Fun and Adventure The Trenton Special Needs Activities Program (SNAP) provided another memorable summer for Downriver young adults with cognitive impairments. The six-week nonprofit summer camp served approximately 30 participants ages 18 to 29. Meeting Monday through Friday, SNAP camp offered a variety of educational, recreational, and community-based activities throughout Metro Detroit. Campers stayed busy throughout
the summer with trips and activities that included seeing Toy Story 5, playing putt-putt, exploring the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, enjoying the Trenton Summer Festival, visiting Greenfield Village and spending time at the Outdoor Adventure Center. The campers also visited the Wyandotte Street Fair and Detroit Zoo, went bowling at 10 Pins and enjoyed activities at Downriver Gymnastics, the Michigan Science Center and Airborne Adventure Park.
Other highlights included attending a Detroit Tigers game and participating in SNAP’s Trenton Hockey event. The program thanked the Trenton High School hockey players who came out to skate with the campers. The final day of SNAP’s 2026 summer program brought another celebration as campers and staff wrapped up a summer filled with friendship, fun, and new experiences. The program expressed its appreciation to its campers and
staff for another great summer and said they would be missed. A special thank-you also went to the Trenton Fire Department for providing a pizza lunch and plenty of treats for the campers on their last day of the program. SNAP’s summer activities gave participants opportunities to explore the community, try new things, and create lasting memories while enjoying time together with friends and staff.

Trenton Football Opens Season with Solid Win
At the press deadline for the Trenton Times, the Trenton Trojan football team is 1-1. They opened the season with a strong 42-14 victory over Allen Park. The Trojans followed that performance with a league matchup against
Wyandotte Roosevelt, where they battled hard but ultimately fell 35-21. Trenton showed plenty of competitiveness through the first two games of the season and look to build on its early-season experience as the season continued.
Lady Trojans Swinging Strong on the Links The Trenton girls golf team has had several notable accomplishments to celebrate recently after a great day on the course with 41 girls competing in the field. Ashlynn Blank and Ella Schumaker took first overall with a score of 40. Newcomers Ava Campeau and Kendyl Fedea also had a strong showing, finishing fifth overall. Several individual awards were also earned. Quinn Robinson won Closest to the Pin, Ella Schumaker won Longest Drive, and Ashlynn Blank won Closest Second Shot. This comes after a huge first place finish at the Wyandotte Scramble, where they came out on top of over 25 teams. It’s been a great season for the team so far, with much more golf still to play.
TRENTON TIMES • SEPTEMBER 16 - OCTOBER 20 2026 • Page 13
Both the Trenton boys and girls cross country teams are off to a strong start this season, turning in impressive performances at the End of Summer Classic at Huron Meadows Metropark and the Annual Livonia Stevenson Lamplighter Run. The Trojans posted strong times and several top finishes while bringing home plenty of medals from the early-season meets. Runners across both teams showed their preparation and determination, competing hard from the opening mile to the finish line. Trenton’s runners also demonstrated the importance of teamwork, encouraging one another throughout each race and helping set a positive tone for the season. With the early meets providing valuable experience and momentum, both the boys and girls teams have plenty to build on as the season continues. As the Trojans settle into the heart of their schedule, Trenton will look to keep improving, lower times and continue making their mark at upcoming meets.

“A prescription bottle has a label, but a person has a story. Learn the story, and you’ll know how to help.” Indeed nothing defines Mitten Family Pharmacy owner Ali Al-Mawla better than this sentiment. Trenton’s newest independentlyowned pharmacy (3108 Van Horn Road) opened this past December. Since then, it’s quickly gained the respect – and patronage – of the community for providing the kind of individual, personal care and attention many believe is lacking in the “big chain” stores. “An independently-owned pharmacy matters because its decisions are made close to the people those decisions affect,” explained the 34-year old father of three. “Its pharmacists can respond to a neighbor’s circumstances instead of relying simply on a distant policy, not only taking time to explain a new medicine, but coordinating with a local prescriber, arranging for free delivery, or finding a practical option when cost or transportation stands in the way.”
He went on to share that personal attention improves safe medication use and preserves access to care. Just as important, a locally-owned pharmacy keeps knowledge, jobs, spending, and civic support rooted in the community. When residents support it, they’re not simply choosing where to fill a prescription; they’re helping sustain a trusted health-care partner, one that can recognize changing needs, act quickly in a crisis, and remain accountable to the Downriver community it serves. And of all the places Ali could have chosen to open his new business, he specifically chose Trenton not only because he lives and loves Downriver, but because of the reputation it’s earned for residents’ support of local businesses. It’s a promise handed down through generations. “We make it a point to tailor our services to our patient’s needs,” he proudly stated. “It’s the small kindnesses that never appear on a receipt but can make all the difference in the world to those who come through our doors.”

Big Goals Don’t Happen Overnight—They Happen Daily
Most of us have at least one big financial goal. Maybe it’s buying your first car, paying off debt, purchasing a home, building savings, helping your children prepare for the future, or feeling more confident about retirement. Big goals can be exciting. They can also feel overwhelming when we focus only on how far away the finish line seems. In his bestselling book Atomic Habits, author James Clear explores a simple idea: small actions, repeated consistently, can produce meaningful results over time. It’s an idea that applies particularly well to our financial lives. Look Beyond the Goal Consider a teenager who wants to buy their first car. The vehicle may be the goal, but reaching it begins long before they start shopping. Each paycheck provides an opportunity to save. Each purchase involves a decision about whether spending today is more important than what they’re working toward. Regularly paying attention to their account helps them understand where their money is actually going. None of those individual decisions will buy a car. Together, however, they can move that teenager closer to the goal while developing money-management skills that can last a lifetime. The same idea works whether you’re 16, 36 or 66. Someone hoping to purchase a home may consistently set aside money from each paycheck. Someone paying down debt may regularly put extra money toward a balance. Someone preparing for retirement may gradually increase contributions as their income grows.
The actions may seem small. Their power comes from repeating them. Ask a Different Question When pursuing a financial goal, we naturally ask: “What do I need to do to reach my goal?” Try asking another question: “What kind of person reaches this goal—and what would that person do today?” Someone who wants to build savings becomes someone who saves consistently. Someone who wants strong credit becomes someone who takes financial obligations seriously. Someone who wants greater control over their finances becomes someone who pays attention to their money before there’s a problem. Instead of relying on motivation to make one dramatic change, you’re developing behaviors that become part of how you manage money. Make the Next Good Decision Easier Look for ways to make good financial decisions easier to repeat. If you’re saving for something important, consider automatically directing part of each paycheck toward that
BIG
goal before you have an opportunity to spend it. If you’re tempted by an unplanned purchase, create a little friction. Give yourself a day to decide whether it’s worth taking money away from something you want more. And if you have a teenager earning their own money, give them opportunities to make real financial decisions while you’re still available to provide guidance. Learning to manage $50 or $100 today can provide valuable experience before they’re responsible for much larger decisions. The objective isn’t perfection. It’s making the next good decision easier. Small Habits Can Lead to Big Opportunities Financial progress rarely comes from one extraordinary decision. More often, it’s the result of ordinary decisions made consistently. Over time, those decisions can create opportunities. Savings can become a down payment on a first vehicle or home. Responsible borrowing and repayment can help build a strong credit history. Better spending decisions can create room for the things that matter most. Whatever your goal, don’t be discouraged because you can’t accomplish it today. Instead, ask yourself: What’s one small action I can begin repeating today that will move me in the right direction? At Downriver Community Federal Credit Union, we believe Big Goals Start Here—because the small habits you build today can help make tomorrow’s biggest accomplishments possible.
Your teen has big goals. Give them a place to start.

Grosse Ile Soccer Rolls to 4-2 Start At the press deadline for the Grosse Ile Grand, the Grosse Ile boys soccer team is off to a strong 4-2 start to the season, showing steady improvement and plenty of early-season momentum. The Red Devils opened the season against Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett, dropping their season opener 7-1. The team quickly bounced back, however, using its own Red Devil Invitational as an opportunity to get back on track. Grosse Ile won two of its three matches at the invitational, earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Dearborn Fordson before putting together an impressive 5-0 shutout against Boyne City. The Red Devils carried that momentum into their next two matches, grabbing a two-game winning streak. Grosse Ile defeated Detroit Aztec Eagles Academy 2-0 before following it up with a 4-1 victory over Monroe Jefferson. The team’s early success is a product of preparation that began well before the regular season. SEE PAGE 16
Riverview Students Gain Culinary Experience at Food and Wine Festival Over the summer, Emily Gross and Kaylee Morgenstern of Riverview Community High School and Ian Loos of Grosse Ile High School were invited to assist the culinary team at the Traverse City Food and Wine Festival from August 19 through August 23. The students gained firsthand experience in highend, large-volume catering while working alongside many award-winning Michigan chefs. They also
had the opportunity to assist celebrity chefs Andrew Zimmern, Aarti Sequeira, Ruth Reichl, and Afrim Pristine. In addition to their culinary experience, the students attended a screening of Coldwater Kitchen and met several of the chefs featured in the film. The experience provided a unique opportunity to see the culinary industry from a professional perspective and learn what it took to work in a fast-paced, highlevel event environment. This incredible opportunity was offered through Michigan ProStart and the Michigan Hospitality Foundation. Through their participation, Riverview student chefs gained valuable industry experience while representing their schools with professionalism and enthusiasm. Their dedication, work ethic, and commitment to learning stood out throughout the event. Riverview School District was proud of the way these students represented their schools and demonstrated the professionalism and passion they brought to every aspect of the experience. SEE PAGE 5
Southgate Volleyball Takes Part in AP Summer Slam Southgate was proud to be part of Allen Park Volleyball’s 2nd Annual Outdoor Summer Slam on August 23, bringing together varsity volleyball teams from Allen Park, Carlson, Riverview, SMCC, and Southgate on the football field for a day of competition, family fun, and giving back. The event offered plenty for families and supporters to enjoy beyond the volleyball court,
including games, activities, food and a 50/50 raffle. The day was designed to bring the community together before the final matches were scheduled to take place under the lights. SEE PAGE 11
