Soaking up the sun at the Trenton Farmers Market By MADELINE MATOSH Trenton’s farmers market continues to bring local vendors and community members together every Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The recurring market, which began in May and will continue through September, takes place at the corner of West Jefferson Avenue and Elm Street in the municipal parking lot. Marketgoers can expect to find a variety of goods from local vendors, including clothes, soaps, honey, and spices, along with an assortment of ready-to-eat treats. The market provides a space for many unique vendors to display their products. Depending on the week, shoppers can find live herbs and philodendron plants, or pierogies and sausage packaged and ready to take home. Spiritual gifts, like gemstone bracelets and Nordic runestones, gathered small crowds as vendors explained the purposes of such stones and baubles. Some could be worn for healing, while others were made to bring calm energy to the wearer. Many of the stones had descriptions detailing their place of origin as well as their intended use. Multiple vendors offered clothing,

dresses, and shoes from local Downriver boutiques. Items like jean shorts and small white skirts offered shoppers a way to jump in on the latest coastal and summer trends. Meanwhile, heavier items, like jeans

and jackets, provided a glimpse into fall fashion. Other trendy storefronts focused on naturally made and healthy goods, like soap sourced from goat’s milk and small-batch jams. Sellers explained

some of the benefits of buying local goods, including freshness and improved taste without heavy preservatives. Some individuals gathered around popcorn stands, many of them parents with excited children looking for sweet treats. Vendors selling homemade spices offered samples in various chip dips, while other vendors displayed high-quality maple syrup and local honey. The food trucks are present every week, while bakers bring homemade fresh bread and cookies to sell as the lot becomes crowded with interested guests. The farmers market lot is surrounded by flowers and Downtown shops, providing an inviting atmosphere for those going about their regular daily errands. With the market taking place in the heart of Downtown Trenton, the event gathers vendors and guests from all around Downriver and Detroit. The diverse selection of goods and produce helps bring the Trenton community together throughout the summer, giving shoppers a chance to find new items they didn’t know they needed, meet friends, and try delicious new snacks.

TSC Honors Swimmers at 2026 Season Celebration

The 2026 Trenton Summer Swim Club season concluded at the end of July with an awards celebration recognizing the accomplishments and dedication of the club’s swimmers. As part of the season-ending celebration, swimmers received special awards and official Summer Swim Club T-shirts. The club recognized Owen Biggar as the recipient of the Team Spirit Award for his enthusiasm, encouragement, and positive contributions to the team throughout the season. The club also recognized Nick Lear as the recipient of the 2026 Trenton Swim Club Scholarship. The scholarship honored Lear’s dedication, sportsmanship, and longstanding commitment to the Trenton Swim Club.

Lear has been a member of TSC since the age of six and has participated in every season without taking a year off. He continued swimming with TSC while competing for Arthur’s Middle School and Trenton High School, where he served as one of the varsity team captains.

In addition to competing, Lear began coaching with the Trenton Swim Club three years ago and also served as a lifeguard. His years of participation, leadership, and service to the club contributed to his selection as the 2026 scholarship recipient. Lear was recruited to compete in Division II swimming in the GMAC Conference at Walsh University. He plans to major in Criminal Justice with a minor in Exercise Science. The conclusion of the season provided an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of the swimmers and the contributions of the families and coaches who supported the program. Throughout the summer, participants developed their swimming skills, gained confidence, and built friendships both in Code and out Scan Scanour ourQR QRCode of the pool. to tofind findyour your perfect perfectinvitation invitation

Slocum-Truax High School Class of 1956 Marks 70 Years The Slocum-Truax High School Class of 1956 held its 70-year class reunion on June 10 at Sibley Gardens. Fifteen classmates and five guests attended. Slocum-Truax High School was the predecessor to what is now Trenton High School. There were hugs, smiles, laughter, and plenty of stories and memories from their high school days. After lunch, each classmate had a chance to talk about memories of high school, their families, and their lives since graduation. Several classmates helped make the day extra special by bringing thoughtful touches to the reunion. John La Pointe had a cake made especially for the day. Ken Brown made leather money clips and change purses marked with “Class of 1956.” He also made and presented class president Tony Saputo with a clock that read, “Tony Saputo: 1956 President.” The Class of 1956 graduated on June 14, 1956, with commencement

held on the high school football field. There were 135 students in the graduating class. Of those graduates, 66 are still around today. The class had held a reunion every five years since graduating in 1956,

Seventy years after graduation, the Class of 1956 is still finding reasons to get together, catch up, and share a few more stories from the years they spent together.

FROM THE CITY

Take Note of Recent Parking and Traffic Changes Near City Hall The City of Trenton is reminding residents and visitors of temporary parking and traffic changes around City Hall as construction continues in the area. The changes began July 6 and will continue through mid-September. Third Street from West Road to Maple is entirely closed, with no access through the area. During the project, the alley between West Jefferson and Third Street has been opened to provide access to the City Hall parking lot. Traffic entering the parking lot is coming from West Road only, with the alley operating as one-way traffic heading south. The only exit from the lot is on the south side of the alley at Maple. Handicap parking is available in the northwest corner of the lot. The City asks residents and visitors for their patience and understanding while the project is underway. For added convenience, a City Hall drop box remains available in front of the police station on West Jefferson Avenue.

NEED AUTO REPAIR? The BEST Service with the BEST Prices!

Trenton Parks and Recreation hosted its Trenton Sweet Masters: Cupcake Challenge from July 21 through July 23 at the Cultural Center, giving children the opportunity to mix, decorate and create their own cupcake masterpieces. The program was designed for children ages 8 to 11, who put their creativity to the test through fun decorating challenges. Participants experimented with different themes and toppings as they created imaginative cupcake designs and showcased their edible creations at the end of each session. The three-day event gave young

participants the chance to step into the role of miniature pastry pros while developing their creativity through hands-on activities. From playful themes to unique toppings, each participant brought their own ideas to their cupcake creations. The department thanked everyone who participated, baked and decorated during the event, noting the enthusiasm and creativity brought by the young cupcake makers. The Sweet Masters Cupcake Challenge provided an opportunity for children to make sweet memories while enjoying a fun summer activity with their peers.

Mom’s Restaurant Continues to Welcome Familiar Faces and Community Leaders

For more than 34 years, Mom’s Restaurant has been a gathering place for families, friends, community leaders, and public officials. A longtime saying at the restaurant compares Mom’s to the Trevi Fountain: “Whenever you go there, you’ll run into someone you know.” That saying continues to ring true as the restaurant welcomes a steady stream of familiar faces and visitors from throughout the Downriver community and beyond. From longtime regulars and first-time guests to local leaders and political figures, Mom’s has remained a place where people from different backgrounds can sit down together over a meal.

Most recently, gubernatorial candidate John James stopped by Mom’s Restaurant for a visit, adding another political figure to the restaurant’s growing list of notable guests. His visit continues a tradition of public officials stopping in to meet with members of the community and experience one of Trenton’s longtime local restaurants. Last fall, Governor Gretchen Whitmer also made a visit to Mom’s, choosing the restaurant as the location to sign legislation providing Michigan tax deductions for qualified tips, certain overtime pay, and Social Security income. The visit brought the governor, lawmakers, and community members together at the Trenton restaurant. While visits from political figures can bring extra attention to the restaurant, Mom’s has spent decades building its reputation around the people who walk through its doors every day. The restaurant’s welcoming atmosphere is part of what has kept customers coming back for more than three decades. Mom’s emphasizes that everyone is welcome, regardless of background, beliefs or political affiliation. The steady flow of customers and occasional visits from community leaders reflect Mom’s role as more than just a place to eat. It has become a meeting place where neighbors cross paths, conversations begin and community connections are made. After over three decades, visitors may walk through the doors for a meal, but there is always a chance they will run into someone they know - or leave having met someone new.

Empowering Community Economic Growth with Corporate Legacy, Philanthropy, and Citizenship Event! Monday, September 28th! Big News!!! We are very excited to announce what we expect to be one of the most inspirational and impactful forum events hosted by the Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber! On Monday, September 28 the SWCRC is partnering with DTE Foundation’s Rodney Cole and 2018 NBA Coach of the Year, former Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors Head Coach, and current senior Ron Hinrichs, CEO/President SWCRC advisor to the Pistons GM, Dwane Casey to host a conversation that will inspire regional high school students, employers, and workforce leaders throughout Southern Wayne County with strategies to empower economic/community growth through philanthropic efforts and corporate citizenship. The event will focus on “Empowering Community Economic Growth with Corporate Legacy, Philanthropy, and Citizenship” and will feature a meaningful conversation about how job providers and philanthropic efforts—including foundations and sports organizations as represented by Coach Casey— are powering economic growth by meeting the unique needs of our communities. Our panelists will share strategies for community engagement and insights on generating creative solutions to leave a positive and lasting impact. This event will offer tremendous value to our region, and I hope you can join us for this unique conversation and breakfast. I am also happy to share that a portion of the event proceeds will benefit the impactful work of our friends at Fish and Loaves Community Food Pantry in Taylor. The forum is scheduled for Monday, September 28 from 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM at Crystal Gardens, located at 16703 Fort St. in Southgate. Registration and event info is located here: SWCRC.com/legacy26

Know your plastics: What those numbers really mean By SUSAN PINKOWSKI It’s everywhere and now studies have shown it’s even in your body! Small fragments eventually become microplastics and nanoplastics in water, soil, air, wildlife, food systems, and human bodies. We’re never going to get rid of all of it, but we can take one important step before we purchase any plastic or bring more of it into our homes. The simple solution is to check the number imprinted on the bottom. This is the SPI number, the Society of the Plastics Industry identification code. There are seven but not all seven are recyclable, and the numbers refer to the chemical composition of the plastic: 1) Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE or PET) 2) High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) 3) Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) 4) Polyvinyl Chloride (P or PVC) 5) Polypropylene (PP) 6) Polystyrene (PS) 7) Miscellaneous Plastics Numbers 1 and 2 can be recycled wherever recycling is accepted, the rest have issues. According to www. generalkinematics.com: Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE or PET) is the most commonly used plastic for beverage bottles, food containers, and packaging. It is widely recycled and can be turned into a variety of products, such as clothing (polar fleece), carpets, and new plastic bottles. However, PET can absorb odors and chemicals from the items it holds, and high heat exposure may cause harmful chemicals to leach into the contents - this is why you never buy bottled water sitting out in the sun). PET is easily accepted at most recycling plants and can be recycled indefinitely into new bottles, clothing, and even construction materials. High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is

commonly used in milk jugs, cleaning bottles, and yogurt containers. It is the most commonly recycled plastic, known for its strength and durability. It is deemed safe for food contact and is one of the safest plastics for both people and the environment. HDPE does not leach chemicals into food or beverages, making it ideal for everyday products. HDPE is widely accepted at recycling centers, with its recycled form used in products like plastic lumber, park benches, and piping. The next series of numbers can occasionally be recycled, but each has its difficulties. It’s probably best to avoid taking possession in the first place. 3. Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is often used in plastic bags, plastic wraps, and squeezable bottles. It has a simple structure, making it easy to produce, but hard to recycle. LDPE is considered a safe plastic, but it tends to tangle in recycling machinery, which can disrupt the recycling process. Some recycling programs accept LDPE, but it remains difficult to process. When recycled, it can be made into garbage can liners, bubble wrap, and furniture. 4. Polyvinyl Chloride (P or PVC) is

often used in pipes, flooring, and medical equipment. It’s one of the oldest plastics, but it contains harmful chemicals that make it challenging to recycle. PVC can be flexible or rigid, depending on the additives used. It’s typically found in products like plumbing pipes, credit cards, and food wraps. PVC is difficult to recycle and is rarely accepted in curbside collection programs. When recycled, it is typically used in flooring, paneling, and roadside gutters. 5. Polypropylene (PP) is known for its durability and resistance to high temperatures. It’s used in a variety of household items such as Tupperware, yogurt containers, and car parts. Although polypropylene is safe for food contact, it’s not widely recycled due to the expense and complexity involved in processing it. While polypropylene can be recycled, it is often discarded due to the cost and complexity of recycling. When recycled, PP is transformed into heavy-duty products like pallets, ice scrapers, and automotive parts. The last in the series, 6 and 7, are in the ‘best to avoid’ category: 6. Polystyrene (PS), commonly known as Styrofoam, is used in products like

disposable cups, packing peanuts, and insulation. While it is cheap and easy to produce, it’s notorious for leaching harmful chemicals, especially when heated. It is also difficult to recycle due to its light and fragile nature. PS is rarely accepted in recycling programs and is often sent to landfills. When it is recycled, it is typically turned into insulation, school supplies, and license plate frames. 7. Miscellaneous Plastics (Other) Plastics marked with the number 7, such as polycarbonate, nylon, and other mixed materials, are grouped into the “Other” category. These plastics often contain bisphenol A (BPA), which has raised health concerns. They are typically found in items like sunglasses, computer casings, and baby bottles(!!). Miscellaneous plastics are the hardest to recycle and are rarely accepted by recycling plants. When they are processed, they are turned into plastic lumber and specialized construction materials. Your best plan of action is to check with your City DPW to find out about the recycling process they use. More information may be obtained at the City of Riverview’s Land Preserve that has a recycling program: www.cityofriverview. com/departments/land_preserve/waste_ recycling.php. We can’t keep dumping plastic in landfills as it takes too many years to degrade, so the best option is not to accept it in the first place. Bring your cloth shopping bags to the store with you, bring your Mason jars (get them weighed first!), if you already have lunch bags, even those will work. If we don’t reduce our footprint, we’re going to get buried in plastic. Hopefully, the science will evolve where everything can be recycled properly but in the meantime, we can do our part to help reduce.

Five Financial Milestones Every Teen Should Reach Before Adulthood

Every parent wants to prepare their teen for success—not just in school, but for the responsibilities and opportunities that come with adulthood. Whether they’re starting a first job, learning to manage money, shopping for a first vehicle, or heading to college, these five milestones can help build lifelong financial confidence. 1. Earn Their First Paycheck A first job is about more than earning money—it’s a chance to build good habits. Encourage your teen to divide each paycheck between spending, saving, and future goals so budgeting becomes routine from the beginning. 2. Learn to Manage a Checking Account The best way to learn money management is by using it. A checking account allows teens to practice using a debit card, tracking purchases, and monitoring balances. The best time to learn these skills is while parents can still answer questions and provide guidance—not after teens are managing money on their own. 3. Save for Something Meaningful Saving is easier with a purpose. Whether it’s a laptop, college ex-

penses, or a first vehicle, setting a goal helps teens learn patience, planning, and the value of saving consistently. 4. Understand the Full Cost of Driving Buying a vehicle is only part of the expense. Talk with your teen about insurance, fuel, maintenance, and repairs before shopping. Understanding the complete cost helps families make informed decisions and determine what comfortably fits their budget before shopping begins. 5. Practice Financial Independence Before They Need It Before college or greater independence, let your

teen take responsibility for everyday financial decisions. Creating a simple budget, monitoring spending, and paying small expenses can build confidence before they’re on their own. Helping Teens Build Confidence for Life Financial confidence isn’t built overnight. It develops through everyday experiences, thoughtful conversations, and opportunities to practice making good financial decisions. Parents don’t have to teach everything at once. Helping teens take one step at a time—from earning a first paycheck to managing a checking account or preparing for a first vehicle—can build the confidence they’ll carry into adulthood. As families prepare for another school year, every conversation about money is an opportunity to help teens build confidence that will serve them well for years to come. If your family is preparing for one of these important milestones, Downriver Community Federal Credit Union is here to help guide you every step of the way. Learn more about resources for teens and families preparing for life’s next milestones at DownriverCU.com/BigGoals. Our mission is simple: Helping People Use Money to Accomplish Great Things!
