THE MAYOR’S CORNER Flat Rock Focuses on Progress and Possibilities My fellow residents, I would like to thank CN for bringing the Whistle Stop STEVE Tour to Flat BELLER Rock. The 250th Mayor of Flat Rock Anniversary locomotives were certainly a sight to see, and it was great to see such a sizable crowd come out to enjoy the event. It was a special opportunity for our community to take part in a historic celebration, and I appreciate everyone who helped make the stop a success. The big news in town right now is the possibility of moving the city’s administrative offices to a new location — the former Michigan Legacy Credit Union building on Gibraltar Road. Negotiations are ongoing as we work to finalize the numbers and gather all the information needed for City Council to make an informed decision. Our current City Hall building is significantly larger than what is needed for the number of employees we have today, making it an inefficient and costly facility to maintain. Utility costs alone average approximately $15,000 per month. In addition, the building is in need of new air-conditioning units, with the estimated cost of that work coming in at approximately $1.5 million.
10-31-26
At the September 21 City Council meeting, we expect to have all of the numbers available, along with plans for the future use of the current City Hall building should Council decide to move forward with the relocation. The goal is to right-size our administrative office space, improve efficiency and, most importantly, potentially save taxpayers a significant amount of money in future operating and maintenance costs. We want to make sure we are making a decision that makes sense for Flat Rock both today and for many years to come. Another project residents have been watching closely is the leftturn signal at Telegraph Road and Vreeland Road. The project is still moving forward, although MDOT encountered some unexpected engineering issues that needed to be addressed. We are currently waiting for DTE to relocate some utilities before work can resume. We have been told that work will begin again soon and that the project should be completed in the near future. I know residents have been waiting patiently for this improvement, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as the agencies involved work through the remaining issues. I look forward to keeping residents updated as we continue working on these important projects.

News from the Woodhaven WBSD Celebrates Ribbon Cuttings at Bates and Gudith Elementary Schools
The Woodhaven-Brownstown School District celebrated an exciting milestone Tuesday evening, September 1 as community members, staff, families, Board of Education members, and former Superintendent Mark Greathead gathered to officially celebrate the completion of major improvements at Bates Elementary School and Gudith Elementary School. “The two ribbon-cutting ceremonies showcased the incredible transformation made possible through the district’s voter-approved 2021 Bond Program,” said Superintendent Matthew Salah.. “From new learning spaces and SMART Labs to updated classrooms, renovated cafeterias, improved parking lots, and enhanced
security features, the projects have created more modern, welcoming, and engaging environments for students and staff.” BATES ELEMENTARY: NEW SPACES FOR LEARNING AND CREATIVITY At Bates Elementary, visitors had the opportunity to see firsthand how the bond project has transformed both the inside and outside of the school. One of the most noticeable changes is the brand-new front office addition, which creates a safer and more secure entrance for visitors while providing office staff with an improved space to welcome and assist students and families. Bates also received new dedicated

Brownstown School District art and music rooms, giving students enhanced spaces to explore their creativity, make music, and develop their talents. Throughout the building, classrooms received fresh paint and new flooring, creating brighter, cleaner, and more inviting learning environments. The school’s Learning Commons, formerly the Media Center, was also updated with a more modern design that provides students with space to read, learn, collaborate, and explore. One of the most exciting additions is Bates’ new state-ofthe-art SMART Lab. The hands-on learning environment gives students opportunities to use technology while exploring science, engineering, problem-solving, creativity, and STEM-based activities. The improvements continued into the cafeteria, which received new flooring, fresh paint, and new refrigeration equipment to better support the school’s food service operations. Outside, Bates received new exterior doors, improved parking lots, a new outdoor play pad, and a new walking path. Together, these improvements provide safer, more functional spaces for students, staff, families, buses, and the entire school community.
new exterior classroom doors, and a new gathering area for parents and families. These improvements enhance the appearance, functionality, safety, and overall experience of the school campus.
GUDITH ELEMENTARY: A TRANSFORMATION THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL The bond project at Gudith Elementary touched nearly every part of the building, creating a significant transformation for students, staff, and families. A highlight of the project is the new four-classroom addition designed specifically for young five and kindergarten students. The updated classrooms provide modern learning spaces designed to better support the needs of the district’s youngest learners. Gudith also welcomed a new stateof-the-art SMART Lab, last school year, giving students opportunities for hands-on learning, collaboration, technology, problem-solving, and STEM-based activities. The school’s Learning Commons,
formerly the Media Center, received a major renovation with new furniture and updated finishes. The flexible space now provides students with areas to read, collaborate, create, and learn together. Every classroom throughout Gudith received new paint and carpeting, providing a fresh and updated environment throughout the school. The cafeteria was also transformed with new furniture, updated finishes, and improvements to the kitchen and food service area, including new serving lines designed to improve the way meals are served to students. The school’s Special Services wing was completely renovated, creating updated spaces to better serve students and staff. The area also received all new furniture. Outside, Gudith received a new parking lot, a new basketball court,
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF WBSD STUDENTS The ribbon cuttings at Bates and Gudith are more than celebrations of new buildings and renovated spaces. They represent the WoodhavenBrownstown School District’s continued investment in creating environments where students can Engage, Enlighten, and Empower. The improvements made at both schools are designed to support the way students learn today while providing safe, welcoming, and engaging spaces that will serve generations of Warriors for years to come. The district extends its sincere appreciation to the WoodhavenBrownstown Board of Education, our community, staff, construction partners, and everyone who helped make these projects possible. And, of course, the best part of these newly renovated schools is seeing them filled with the energy, curiosity, creativity, and excitement of our students.

Kids Take Over the Track at Flat Rock Speedway There was no shortage of smiles, excitement and a little bit of destruction when more than 20 young drivers took part in the annual Kids’ Power Wheels Demolition Derby at Flat Rock Speedway on August 22. Young participants climbed behind the wheels of their Power Wheels vehicles and took to the track for a miniature version of the popular demolition derby. Divided into age groups, the young drivers had the opportunity to bump, crash and compete while families watched from the grandstands. The event has become a fun yearly tradition at Flat Rock Speedway, giving kids the chance to experience the excitement of the track in their own pint-sized vehicles.
Helmets and age-appropriate safety requirements helped keep the event focused on fun while the young competitors showed plenty of enthusiasm behind the wheel. At the conclusion of the derby, every child received an award, giving all of the young drivers something special to take home from their day at the speedway. With more than 20 kids participating, the Power Wheels Derby once again proved to be a crowd-pleasing part of the Flat Rock Speedway season. There’s nothing quite like a Kids’ Power Wheels Derby! A big thank-you goes out to all of the young drivers and their families for helping continue this fun annual tradition.

FRHS School Spirit Starts in the Parking Lot Before they hit the halls, Flat Rock High School students brought their creativity to the parking lot, transforming ordinary parking spaces into colorful reflections of their personalities and interests. During the annual parking spot painting tradition, students turned their assigned spaces into their own personal canvases. The designs offered a glimpse into the things they enjoy, the characters they love and the ideas that inspire them.
A walk through the parking lot might reveal Minions, Star Wars characters, Bible verses, favorite sports teams and athletic heroes such as LeBron James, along with countless other creative designs. Each space was as individual as the student who painted it. For some students, the artwork highlighted favorite movies or characters. Others showcased their faith, love of sports, hobbies, interests or
simply their own artistic style. Together, the colorful collection created a unique snapshot of the personalities and passions found throughout Flat Rock High School. The annual tradition gives students a chance to make their mark on campus before the school year gets underway—and their painted spaces will remain a colorful reminder of who they are and what they enjoy throughout the year.

Flat Rock Marching Band Ready for the Season Before they took the field for Friday night football games and marching band competitions, Flat Rock High School’s marching band students put in plenty of work—and plenty of fun—during their 2026 band camp at Walden. The week was filled with rehearsals, teamwork and traditions as the students prepared their new production, “Stranger Things.” By Day Two, the first two songs were already making their way onto the field, while “Crazy Shirt Day” gave students a chance to show off their personalities between rehearsals. Day Three brought “Beach Day,” along with continued fine-tuning of the show and the alwayspopular Cabin Olympics. As the week progressed, more of the production came together, with the students putting their music and marching skills into action. By Day Five, the entire show was on the field. The week wrapped up with Family Friday, beginning with a sunrise over the marching season. Students made final adjustments before their first performance, participated in a beach-themed show and even welcomed family members to join them for some of the basic running exercises.
The highlight came when the marching band performed its first presentation of “Stranger Things,” giving students their first opportunity to showcase the production they had been working so hard to bring together. With band camp behind them, the Flat Rock
Marching Band is ready to take its production to the field for the upcoming football season and marching band competitions, carrying with it the music, choreography, friendships, and memories created during a busy week at Walden.

Big Goals Don’t Happen Overnight—They Happen Daily
Most of us have at least one big financial goal. Maybe it’s buying your first car, paying off debt, purchasing a home, building savings, helping your children prepare for the future, or feeling more confident about retirement. Big goals can be exciting. They can also feel overwhelming when we focus only on how far away the finish line seems. In his bestselling book Atomic Habits, author James Clear explores a simple idea: small actions, repeated consistently, can produce meaningful results over time. It’s an idea that applies particularly well to our financial lives. Look Beyond the Goal Consider a teenager who wants to buy their first car. The vehicle may be the goal, but reaching it begins long before they start shopping. Each paycheck provides an opportunity to save. Each purchase involves a decision about whether spending today is more important than what they’re working toward. Regularly paying attention to their account helps them understand where their money is actually going. None of those individual decisions will buy a car. Together, however, they can move that teenager closer to the goal while developing money-management skills that can last a lifetime. The same idea works whether you’re 16, 36 or 66. Someone hoping to purchase a home may consistently set aside money from each paycheck. Someone paying down debt may regularly put extra money toward a balance. Someone preparing for retirement may gradually increase contributions as their income grows.
The actions may seem small. Their power comes from repeating them. Ask a Different Question When pursuing a financial goal, we naturally ask: “What do I need to do to reach my goal?” Try asking another question: “What kind of person reaches this goal—and what would that person do today?” Someone who wants to build savings becomes someone who saves consistently. Someone who wants strong credit becomes someone who takes financial obligations seriously. Someone who wants greater control over their finances becomes someone who pays attention to their money before there’s a problem. Instead of relying on motivation to make one dramatic change, you’re developing behaviors that become part of how you manage money. Make the Next Good Decision Easier Look for ways to make good financial decisions easier to repeat. If you’re saving for something important, consider automatically directing part of each paycheck toward that
BIG
goal before you have an opportunity to spend it. If you’re tempted by an unplanned purchase, create a little friction. Give yourself a day to decide whether it’s worth taking money away from something you want more. And if you have a teenager earning their own money, give them opportunities to make real financial decisions while you’re still available to provide guidance. Learning to manage $50 or $100 today can provide valuable experience before they’re responsible for much larger decisions. The objective isn’t perfection. It’s making the next good decision easier. Small Habits Can Lead to Big Opportunities Financial progress rarely comes from one extraordinary decision. More often, it’s the result of ordinary decisions made consistently. Over time, those decisions can create opportunities. Savings can become a down payment on a first vehicle or home. Responsible borrowing and repayment can help build a strong credit history. Better spending decisions can create room for the things that matter most. Whatever your goal, don’t be discouraged because you can’t accomplish it today. Instead, ask yourself: What’s one small action I can begin repeating today that will move me in the right direction? At Downriver Community Federal Credit Union, we believe Big Goals Start Here—because the small habits you build today can help make tomorrow’s biggest accomplishments possible.
Your teen has big goals. Give them a place to start.
