Revvin’ Engines for a Good Cause Over 100 car enthusiasts from across the Downriver area gathered on August 1 for the annual Roam’N Chariots Hospice Car Show, held at the Southgate City Hall complex.

The event benefited Henry Ford SandCastles Grief Support, a program that provides support and resources for children, teens, and families grieving the loss of a loved one.

The show welcomed all makes, models, years, and motorcycles.

Throughout the day, visitors enjoyed a wide variety of classic cars, custom vehicles, and motorcycles while competing for trophies and prizes.

The annual car show once again combined a passion for automobiles with a commitment to supporting a worthy cause, raising awareness for Henry Ford SandCastles and the important grief support services the organization provides to families throughout the community.

Maryhaven Veterans Honored with Quilts of Valor On July 7, military veterans residing at Maryhaven Senior Living in Southgate were honored for their dedicated service to the United States during a heartfelt ceremony celebrating their sacrifice and commitment.

Veterans Joseph Demming, Michael Mohnlock, Ed Shalda, Joseph Cunningham, and Henry Brettschneider were each presented with a handcrafted patriotic quilt as part of the Quilts of Valor ceremony, a national initiative whose mission is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.

The beautiful quilts were lovingly handmade by members of the local chapter of the Blue Star Mothers of America. The talented volunteers attending the ceremony included Kathryn Gross-Jacek, Colleen Hickey, Sheree Hickey, Cyndi Tuggle, Diana Johnson, and Honor Shoemaker, whose craftsmanship and dedication helped make the event especially meaningful.

Southgate Mayor Joseph Kuspa participated in the ceremony, presenting each veteran with a commemorative certificate recognizing their military service.

“It was an honor to be part of this very special presentation,” Mayor Kuspa said. “Meeting these veterans and the wonderful women who created these beautiful quilts was truly inspiring. It was a privilege to recognize their service and sacrifice.”

Administrator Gwyneth Dlugoss helped organize the event and invited residents to join in celebrating the veterans, creating a warm and appreciative atmosphere for all in attendance.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation began in 2003 from a dream experienced by founder Catherine Roberts while her son, Nat, was deployed to Iraq. In the dream, Roberts saw a young soldier

overwhelmed by the emotional burdens of war. As she watched, someone wrapped him in a quilt, and his expression transformed from despair to hope. From that powerful vision came the belief that quilts could provide comfort, healing, and gratitude to those who have served.

Over the past 23 years, the foundation has grown into a nationwide movement, partnering with organizations such as the Blue

Star Mothers of America to recognize veterans across the country. Since its founding, the Quilts of Valor Foundation has awarded more than 450,000 quilts to service members and veterans in appreciation of their service and sacrifice.

SCSD Enrichment Camps Provided a Summer of Learning and Fun

The Southgate Community School District Enrichment Camps concluded another successful summer after providing weeks of engaging learning experiences for students across the district. Through the collaborative efforts of teachers, administrators, and support staff, each camp featured creative activities and themed lessons that encouraged curiosity, inspired confidence, and fostered academic and personal growth.

Designed to extend learning beyond the traditional school year, the free enrichment camps offered students the opportunity to strengthen academic skills while exploring new interests in

a fun, hands-on environment. Camp activities combined learning with creativity, collaboration, and exploration, allowing students to remain engaged throughout the summer while building meaningful connections with their peers and educators.

The camps also served as an important resource for Southgate families by providing accessible, high-quality educational programming at no cost.

The wide variety of camp themes ensured that students could participate in experiences that matched their interests while continuing to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, communication,

and teamwork skills.

The success of the SCSD Enrichment Camps reflected the months of planning and preparation completed by district staff before summer began.

Teachers, administrators, and support staff dedicated countless hours to designing enriching activities, organizing materials, and creating welcoming learning environments. Their commitment and enthusiasm helped make this year’s camps a memorable experience, leaving students with new knowledge, lasting friendships, and positive memories that will carry into the upcoming school year.

Southgate Welcomes International Peace Run for Fifth Community Visit

On Wednesday, July 29, the Sri Chinmoy OnenessHome Peace Run made its fifth visit to Southgate, stopping at the Downriver Family YMCA and continuing the city’s longstanding connection to the international movement promoting peace, friendship, and understanding.

The Peace Run first visited Southgate in 2012 and returned in 2014, 2016, and 2024. This year’s visit marked the fifth time the international relay had stopped in the community.

Founded in 1987, the Peace Run has traveled through more than 160 countries and territories, inspiring millions

of people around the world. Recognized as the world’s longest-running international torch relay, the event encourages individuals and communities to embrace the ideals of peace, harmony, and friendship.

The relay is symbolized by the passing of an Olympicstyle Peace Torch from person to person, community to community, and nation to nation, representing the shared hope for a more peaceful world. Throughout its history, the torch has been carried by internationally respected leaders and humanitarian figures, including Mikhail Gorbachev, Pope Francis, Nelson Mandela, and Mother Teresa.

Southgate’s connection to the Peace Run was further strengthened in 2024, when Mayor Joseph Kuspa received the Peace Run Torch-Bearer Award. The award recognizes individuals who inspire their communities and promote the ideals of peace, friendship, and global unity. Past recipients have included Olympic champion Carl Lewis, legendary musician Ringo Starr, tennis great Billie Jean King and numerous local public servants and community leaders from around the world.

This year’s visiting runners were from numerous countries, including the United States, Domestically, there was one from Ohio and one from Texas. The international runners included Great Britain, Croatia, Australia, Portugal, Romania, Latvia, and New Zealand. During the Southgate stop, the runners shared the Peace Run’s mission before participating in a ceremonial passing of the Peace Torch. Residents, local officials, and community members were then invited to join the runners for a symbolic run around the YMCA, demonstrating that the pursuit of peace begins with people coming together in their own communities.

Mayor Kuspa welcomed the international delegation and reflected on the significance of the event.

“It was an honor to welcome the International Peace Run back to Southgate,” Kuspa said. “Receiving the Peace Run Torch-Bearer Award in 2024 was a humbling experience, but the true recognition belongs

to our community. Southgate has always embraced opportunities to bring people together, and this event once again demonstrated our shared commitment to peace, friendship, and understanding.”

The event brought together residents of all ages to meet runners from around the world and participate in a tradition that has inspired millions for nearly four decades.

As the Peace Torch continued its journey to Monroe, its visit to Southgate served as a reminder that while the relay spans thousands of miles and crosses continents, its message remains the same: peace begins with each individual and grows stronger when communities unite in friendship, compassion, and hope.

In honor of America’s 250 Anniversary, the 2026 United States route will included running 10,000 miles through all fifty states and concluding in New York City on August 15th.

Southgate Breaks Ground on Downriver’s First Miracle Field After nearly a decade of planning, Southgate has officially broken ground on what will become Downriver’s first Miracle League baseball field, a project designed to make America’s pastime accessible to children and young adults with physical and intellectual disabilities.

City officials, community members, and project partners gathered on August 7 for the groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate a milestone years in the making. Once completed, the Miracle Field will provide an inclusive space where players of all abilities can safely experience the joy of baseball.

The field will feature a customdesigned rubberized turf surface that accommodates wheelchairs and other assistive devices while reducing the risk of injuries. The specialized playing surface ensures that children and young adults who might otherwise face barriers to participating in organized sports can enjoy the game alongside family, friends, and volunteers.

The Southgate project is a

significant addition to adaptive recreation in Michigan. There are currently only eight Miracle League fields operating or under development across the state. Southgate’s facility will become just the third Miracle Field in Wayne County and the first serving the Downriver community.

Funding for the long-awaited

project was made possible through a combination of local and county support. After years of planning, Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding administered through Wayne County became the catalyst that moved the project forward. Wayne County contributed approximately $546,000 in grant

funding toward the estimated $850,000 Phase 1 project, significantly reducing the financial commitment required from the City of Southgate.

Officials said the field is expected to serve families from throughout Downriver, creating opportunities for children and young adults with disabilities to participate in organized baseball in an environment specifically designed to meet their needs.

The groundbreaking marked not only the beginning of construction but also the realization of a vision that has been in the works for nearly 10 years.

Community leaders thanked Wayne County, project partners, and the many residents and supporters who helped bring the project from concept to reality.

Slated for completion in the next year, the Miracle Field will stand as a lasting symbol of inclusion and accessibility, ensuring that every player—regardless of ability—has the chance to step onto the field, round the bases, and experience the excitement of the game.

Southgate Schools will welcome a familiar face this school year as Officer Chris Parsons steps into his new role as the district’s School Resource Officer (SRO), continuing the strong partnership between Southgate Com-

munity Schools and the Southgate Police Department.

Parsons has served as a police officer since 2016, beginning his career with the Detroit Police Department before joining the Southgate Police Department, where he has spent the past eight and a half years.

Throughout his career, he has received numerous honors, including two life-saving citations and, most recently, the Medal of Valor for his actions during the American House Senior Complex apartment fire that took place in 2025.

Outside of law enforcement, Parsons has remained deeply involved in the community through coaching. He has coached flag football for the past six years, basketball at the YMCA for

two years, and the Southgate Vikings Junior Football Team for the past four years, helping lead the team to two city championships.

Parsons said he has always enjoyed working with young people and serving the community. As many of the students he has coached enter junior high and high school, he looks forward to continuing those relationships in the classroom and hallways.

He also expressed his respect for the work of former School Resource Officer Morgan Parrish, whose impact on students and the district helped define the role. Parsons said he hopes to build on that legacy by continuing to foster positive relationships between students, families, school staff, and law enforcement.

The partnership between Southgate Community Schools and the Southgate Police Department remains focused on providing a safe, supportive learning environment while strengthening trust between students and local officers.

Know your plastics: What those numbers really mean

Small fragments eventually become microplastics and nanoplastics in water, soil, air, wildlife, food systems, and human bodies. We’re never going to get rid of all of it, but we can take one important step before we purchase any plastic or bring more of it into our homes. The simple solution is to check the number imprinted on the bottom. This is the SPI number, the Society of the Plastics Industry identification code. There are seven but not all seven are recyclable, and the numbers refer to the chemical composition of the plastic: 1) Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE or PET) 2) High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) 3) Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) 4) Polyvinyl Chloride (P or PVC) 5) Polypropylene (PP) 6) Polystyrene (PS) 7) Miscellaneous Plastics Numbers 1 and 2 can be recycled wherever recycling is accepted, the rest have issues. According to www. generalkinematics.com: Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE or PET) is the most commonly used plastic for beverage bottles, food containers, and packaging. It is widely recycled and can be turned into a variety of products, such as clothing (polar fleece), carpets, and new plastic bottles. However, PET can absorb odors and chemicals from the items it holds, and high heat exposure may cause harmful chemicals to leach into the contents - this is why you never buy bottled water sitting out in the sun). PET is easily accepted at most recycling plants and can be recycled indefinitely into new bottles, clothing, and even construction materials.

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is commonly used in milk jugs, cleaning bottles, and yogurt containers. It is the most commonly recycled plastic, known for its strength and durability. It is deemed safe for food contact and is one of the safest plastics for both people and the environment. HDPE does not leach chemicals into food or beverages, making it ideal for everyday products.

HDPE is widely accepted at recycling centers, with its recycled form used in products like plastic lumber, park benches, and piping.

The next series of numbers can occasionally be recycled, but each has its difficulties. It’s probably best to avoid taking possession in the first place.

3. Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is often used in plastic bags, plastic wraps, and squeezable bottles.

It has a simple structure, making it easy to produce, but hard to recycle.

LDPE is considered a safe plastic, but it tends to tangle in recycling machinery, which can disrupt the recycling process. Some recycling programs accept LDPE, but it remains difficult to process. When recycled, it can be made into garbage can liners, bubble wrap, and furniture.

4. Polyvinyl Chloride (P or PVC) is often used in pipes, flooring, and medical equipment. It’s one of the oldest plastics, but it contains harmful chemicals that make it challenging to recycle. PVC can be flexible or rigid, depending on the additives used. It’s typically found in products like plumbing pipes, credit cards, and food wraps. PVC is difficult to recycle and is rarely accepted in curbside collection programs. When recycled, it is typically used in flooring, paneling, and roadside gutters.

5. Polypropylene (PP) is known for its durability and resistance to high temperatures. It’s used in a variety of household items such as Tupperware, yogurt containers, and car parts.

Although polypropylene is safe for food contact, it’s not widely recycled due to the expense and complexity involved in processing it. While polypropylene can be recycled, it is often discarded due to the cost and complexity of recycling. When recycled, PP is transformed into heavy-duty products like pallets, ice scrapers, and automotive parts.

The last in the series, 6 and 7, are in the ‘best to avoid’ category: 6. Polystyrene (PS), commonly known as Styrofoam, is used in products like disposable cups, packing peanuts, and insulation.

While it is cheap and easy to produce, it’s notorious for leaching harmful chemicals, especially when heated. It is also difficult to recycle due to its light and fragile nature.

PS is rarely accepted in recycling programs and is often sent to landfills.

When it is recycled, it is typically turned into insulation, school supplies, and license plate frames.

7. Miscellaneous Plastics (Other) Plastics marked with the number 7, such as polycarbonate, nylon, and other mixed materials, are grouped into the “Other” category. These

plastics often contain bisphenol A (BPA), which has raised health concerns. They are typically found in items like sunglasses, computer casings, and baby bottles(!!).

Miscellaneous plastics are the hardest to recycle and are rarely accepted by recycling plants. When they are processed, they are turned into plastic lumber and specialized construction materials.

Your best plan of action is to check with your City DPW to find out about the recycling process they use. More information may be obtained at the City of Riverview’s Land Preserve that has a recycling program: www. cityofriverview.com/departments/ land_preserve/waste_recycling.php.

We can’t keep dumping plastic in landfills as it takes too many years to degrade, so the best option is not to accept it in the first place. Bring your cloth shopping bags to the store with you, bring your Mason jars (get them weighed first!), if you already have lunch bags, even those will work.

If we don’t reduce our footprint, we’re going to get buried in plastic.

Hopefully, the science will evolve where everything can be recycled properly but in the meantime, we can do our part to help reduce.
