Prior to Mayor Swift's formal State of the City address, special recognition was given to several organizations and community leaders who have played a significant role in strengthening Riverview's sense of community and civic engagement.

One of the evening's first recognitions honored Steve Ahles of the Southgate Rotary Club for his leadership and mentorship in helping establish the Rotary Club of Riverview, which officially received its charter on

Mayor Swift noted that the Riverview Rotary Club recently celebrated its Charter Party alongside Rotary members from across Southeast Michigan and Canada. He credited Ahles for helping guide the organization during its earliest stages

and said his mentorship and support allowed the club to quickly establish itself as an active service organization within the community.

Since receiving its charter, the Riverview Rotary Club has already organized and supported several community-focused initiatives, including local family assistance efforts, the city's Letters to Santa program, food and cereal drives, Shred Day, Concert on the Course events, a Comedy Night fundraiser, and a Murder Mystery Dinner fundraiser.

The organization is also preparing for its upcoming State of the City luncheon, which supports scholarships for local students.

Celebrating community as summer arrives in Riverview

My fellow Riverview residents, As we welcome the month of June and the unofficial start of summer in our great city, I continue to be amazed by the incredible community spirit that makes Riverview such a special place ANDREW to call home. From faith-based SWIFT gatherings and family traditions to exciting summer events and community partnerships, there is truly something happening for everyone in Riverview.

A sure sign of spring in Riverview was the return of Turtle Island at Young Patriots Park! What started eight years ago as a creative idea from DPW's own Steve Scherer has grown into one of Riverview's most unique and beloved traditions. Turtle Island once again became home to dozens of basking turtles enjoying the sunshine at Reflection Pond.

This year's Turtle Island Photo Contest brought smiles and laughter to many residents as families visited the park hoping to capture the perfect turtle photo.

We received contest entries from Denise Bowen, Lou Ann Durand, Russell Andres, Phil Henson, Paxton Ledl, and Darlene Ledl. Congratulations once again to Lou Ann Durand, winner of the $25 A Serendipity Cakery gift certificate, and Phil Henson, winner of the $25 Bruster's Real Ice Cream gift card. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped continue this fun Riverview tradition. A special thank you once again to Steve Scherer and our Department of Public Works for creating and

maintaining such a wonderful feature at Young Patriots Park.

Looking ahead, there is no shortage of exciting summer activities taking place throughout Riverview.

Our Riverview Recreation Department is preparing for the 40th Annual Downriver Senior Olympics hosted this year by Lincoln Park from August I 0th through August 14th. Registration forms are currently available at the Recreation Department, and all forms and payments are due

by June 30th. I encourage our senior residents to participate in this outstanding tradition promoting health, activity, friendship, and fun.

Of course, one of the biggest events of the summer returns June 18th through June 20th as Riverview Summerfest takes over our city once again. Summerfest truly is Riverview's signature summer celebration featuring carnival rides, food trucks, live bands, a buzzing beer tent, and fireworks on Saturday night at dusk. This event continues to grow every year because of the tremendous support from our volunteers, sponsors, city staff, and residents. We are still actively seeking sponsors for this year's Summerfest, and I encourage local businesses to consider supporting one of Riverview's largest annual events.

I'm also excited to announce that Summer Concerts in the Park will officially return beginning Wednesday, July !st at the Gazebo in Young Patriots Park. Concerts will take place every Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and are completely free for residents and visitors of all ages.

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and dancing shoes while enjoying live music under the summer sky. The Fun Food Express Food Truck will be onsite, and The Market Social will once again coordinate the Riverview Farmer's Market during the concerts. Thank you to Rivergate Health Care Center for sponsoring this year's concert series.

Finally, preparations are well underway for the 5th Annual Concert on the Course hosted by Riverview Rotary and the City of Riverview at the Riverview Highlands Golf Practice Facility. This "Pine Knob-style" concert continues to grow in popularity every year and has become one of the most anticipated events of the summer. This year's featured band will be the incredibly popular Transit Brothers brass band performing their Huey Lewis and the News tribute show. The event will take place on Sunday, July 19th, with gates opening at 3 :00 p.m. and the show beginning at 4:00 p.m. featuring opening act acoustic guitarist Steve Washburn. Attendees are also encouraged to bring canned goods to support St. Cyprian's Food Pantry.

As always, I would like to thank our incredible city staff, volunteers, civic organizations, churches, schools, local businesses, and residents for helping make Riverview such a vibrant and caring community. It truly takes all ofus working together to continue building the kind of hometown we are proud to call "Downriver's Biggest Small City."

History comes alive at Forest Elementary's 'Living Wax Museum' Forest Elementary's fourth grade students recently brought history to life through the exciting Living Wax Museum Project, led by fourth grade teacher Mrs. Laura Grunwald.

As part of the project, students selected and researched a historical figure of their choice.

Throughout the process, students practiced important research and writing skills by reading about their person, identifying key facts, creating infonnational posters, and writing detailed note cards.

On Thursday, May 14th, the hard work truly came

alive as students transformed into their historical figures by dressing in costume and presenting speeches to visitors. Forest students, staff members, parents, and family members had the opportunity to walk through the "museum" and hear students share fascinating facts and stories about the influential people they portrayed.

From athletes and inventors to entertainers and activists, students showcased a wide variety of historical figures while demonstrating confidence, creativity, and public speaking skills. Guests were impressed by the students' knowledge, effort, and

enthusiasm throughout the event.

At the School Board Meeting on May 19th, three student representatives (Lakelyn Harding, Averie Boyless and Joshua Sammons) made their presentation for school board members.

The Living Wax Museum was a wonderful educational experience that combined research, writing, creativity, and presentation skills in a fun and memorable way. Forest Elementary is proud of all the fourth-grade students for their outstanding work and dedication to the project.

Memorial fifth graders trade classrooms for campfires Memorial Elementary School fifth graders traded their classrooms for the great outdoors April 28 through May 1, embarking on an unforgettable fourday overnight adventure at YMCA Storer Camps in Jackson, Michigan.

Nestled on a stunning 1,200-acre campus along Stony Lake - home to 15 unique ecosystems Storer Camps has been providing outdoor education and character development to young people since 1918. For Memorial's fifth graders, it was four days packed with challenge, discovery, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Students threw themselves into some of the camp's most beloved activities. Anglers tested their patience

- YMCA Storer Camps and skill out on the water during fishing, while the reptile house gave curious campers a close-up look at some of nature's most fascinating creatures. The archery range challenged students to focus and steady their aim, and the legendary Predator vs. Prey game had everyone on the move - hearts racing as students learned firsthand how survival in nature really works.

Beyond the activities, camp gave students a chance to build teamwork, push past their comfort zones, and grow together as a class before heading off to middle school.

A special thank-you goes out to the National Honor Society students from Riverview High School who generously volunteered their time to chaperone the fifth graders throughout the trip. Their leadership, patience, and positive energy made the experience even more special for every camper on the grounds.

Memorial's fifth graders return home with muddy shoes, big smiles, and a bond forged in the Michigan woods - the perfect way to close out an incredible elementary school career.

Riverview Pirate artist selected for DIA exhibition A giant congratulations to Jaycob Saccucci, whose artwork was selected for the upcoming 5th Annual Wayne County High School Art Exhibition taking place at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

This juried exhibition celebrates the creativity and talent of students in grades 9-12 from across Wayne County, featuring imaginative works by emerging artists in photography, painting, textiles, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, and more.

Jaycob's selection is an incredible achievement and a reflection of the artistic talent found within Riverview schools. The exhibition will be on display on the first floor of the Wayne and Joan Webber Education Wing and will be free with museum admission from June 18 through July 19, 2026.

Students experience local government and public services first-hand The second graders at Huntington Elementary School had their annual field trip to explore the services offered by our wonderful community of Riverview. On Friday, May 8th, they walked from Huntington Elementary School and enjoyed a tour of the Riverview Police Department.

Mayor Swift showed the classes around City Hall and told them about the government process. The next stop was the Riverview Post Office, where students mailed letters that they had written.

After a quick lunch at Young Patriot's Park, the second graders were shown around the Riverview Library by our knowledgeable librarians and made bookmarks.

A walk around the pond at Young Patriot's Park was part of the afternoon, where the boys and girls looked at the pond's habitat they had been studying in science.

The Riverview Fire Department was another stop, where students were able to see the emergency vehicles closeup. Finally, the classes played at the new park near the Community Center before their walk back to school.

All the kids had an incredible time that day learning about Riverview.

An evening of art, music, and inspiration at RCHS The annual RCHS student art show was a vibrant celebration of creativity, talent, and community spirit, featuring an impressive collection of artwork from students across a variety of artistic disciplines.

Guests attending opening night on April 1st were welcomed into a gallery filled with Japaneseinspired lanterns, value scale acrylic portraits, watercolor works, and many other imaginative pieces created throughout the school year.

The evening was enhanced by live musical performances from student musicians whose guitar

melodies provided the perfect atmosphere as visitors explored the displays. The Popcorn Pirates served their signature popcorn specialty, Culinary Arts offered delicious brownie bites, and the Garden Club joined the festivities by selling freshly grown herbs. To support the habitat of our local pollinators, guests were invited to take home free milkweed and sunflower seeds.

The event brought together community members, families, staff, and administration in support of student achievement and artistic expression.

"Art is so very important to the development of our youth," said art instructor Ms. Van Sickle. "Art helps with intuitive thinking, problem solving, and creative idea development. Today's world wants innovative thinkers, and with things moving so fast, creativity helps develop essential skills for the world that will surround our next generations. The art on display was an impressive array of the many talents and ingenuity our students already carry."

The year of the Pirate he 2026 season will be remembered as one of the most successful in recent memory for Riverview Track & Field. Across both the boys and girls programs, athletes delivered championship performances, set personal records, earned state qualifications, and added their names to the program's history books. The accomplishments were a reflection of the hard work, dedication, and c01mnitment displayed by the entire team throughout the Dorsey season.

The Riverview boys team made its mark at the regional championships, producing multiple regional champions and several state Geiger qualifiers. Leading the way was Niko Papodopolous, who captured the regional title in the shot put with a personal-record throw of 51 feet, 8.5 inches. His perfonnance not only secured first place but placed him within striking distance of the school record of 52 feet, 10 inches that has stood since 1977. Even more remarkably, Papodopolous became the first known Riverview athlete in nearly 50 years to surpass the 50-foot mark in the event.

Magnus Geiger continued his dominance in the throwing events by repeating as regional champion in the discus. His winning throw of 146 feet, 10 inches represented a personal-best improvement of nearly three feet.

Geiger also qualified for the state finals in the shot put with a throw of 48 feet, 7.5 inches, showcasing his versatility and consistency as one of the area's premier throwers.

In the sprint events, Derrick Parker secured another trip to the MHSAA

Riverview Track& Field makes history

State Finals by winning the regional championship in the 400-meter dash with a personal-record time of 51.10 seconds. After qualifying for the state meet in the 100 meters a year ago, Parker once again proved himself among the top sprinters in the region.

Ashton Robinson also earned his first state finals appearance, surpassing the qualifying standard in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22. 72 seconds.

Despite finishing fourth overall, Robinson's performance was enough to earn a coveted spot at the state meet.

The Pirates also enjoyed tremendous success at the Huron League Championships, where the boys team demonstrated exceptional depth.

Riverview swept the top three spots in the shot put, led by Papodopolous, Geiger, and Carson Vetter. Geiger captured the league title in the discus with a season-best throw of 150

feet, 11 inches, while Papodopolous claimed the shot put championship with a throw of 50 feet, 6 inches.

Robinson added a pair of runnerup finishes in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, including a personal-best time of 22.46 seconds in the 200. Conner Sellman also battled through injury to earn a second-place finish in the high jump after clearing 5 feet, 10 inches.

The season reached a historic conclusion at the MHSAA State Finals, where Geiger delivered one final unforgettable performance in a Riverview unifonn. Competing in the last meet of his high school career, Geiger shattered a school record that had stood since 1978 by launching the discus 153 feet, 2 inches. The throw earned him a place in the state finals and an eighth-place finish overall, securing All-State honors

and cementing his place among the greatest throwers in school history.

The Riverview girls team also enjoyed a standout season highlighted by individual excellence and relay success. Ashley Dorsey emerged as one of the top athletes in the Huron League, qualifying for the MHSAA State Finals in the 300-meter hurdles after finishing runner-up at regionals with a time of 47.90 seconds. She nearly qualified in a second event as well, placing third in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 16.57 seconds.

Dorsey's success continued at the Huron League Championships, where she captured league titles in both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles. Her perfonnances established her as one of the conference's premier competitors and provided a major boost for the Pirates throughout the season.

The girls' 4xl00-meter relay team of Kailyn Frierson, Ashley Dorsey, Dezarey Bell, and Ashley Robinson also delivered one of the highlights of the season. The quartet qualified for the state finals with a season-best time of 50.95 seconds and a runner-up finish at the regional championships.

They carried that momentum into the Huron League meet, where they posted another season-best mark of 50.53 seconds while earning a secondplace finish and further establishing themselves as one of the top relay groups in the area.

While championships, state qualifications, personal records, and school records defined the season, the true story of Riverview Track & Field was the collective effort displayed by every athlete in the program.

From veteran leaders to first-year competitors, the boys and girls teams consistently represented Riverview with pride, determination, and sportsmanship. Their accomplishments created a memorable season that will be celebrated for years to come while laying a strong foundation for continued success in the future.

Riverview rows to six medals at Wy-Hi The Riverview rowing crew delivered an outstanding performance at the Wy-Hi Regatta, bringing home medals in six events.

Leading the way, the Women's Novice Quad of Evelyn Isham, Brianna Cross, ltzel Perez, and Ella Gunnell, with coxswain Amelia Isham, captured first place. Sofia Layne also earned a gold medal with a first-place finish in the single.

The Women's Novice 8 secured second place behind a strong effort from ltzel Perez, Evelyn Isham, Ella McLean, Brianna Cross, Jaycob Saccucci, Giorgia Tsipras, Isabelle Wakeman, and Ella Gunnell, with coxswain Camryn Reno. Another silver medal came from the Mixed 4 crew of Sofia Layne, Emilee Baker, Brendan McCoy, and Benjamin Brashaw.

Adding to the team's success, the Men's Varsity 4 of Joshua Riley, Benjamin Brashaw, Owyn Troutman, and Ryan Hughes, with coxswain Isabelle Wakeman, earned third place. The Women's Double team ofVasilia Tsipras and Katerina Tsipras also claimed bronze with a third-place finish.

The regatta showcased the crew's hard work, detennination, and teamwork, and their strong results reflected the dedication they demonstrated throughout the season.

Lady Pirates make history with twin district crowns The spring sports season will be remembered as a special one for Riverview Athletics, as two wooden mittens made their way home to Riverview thanks to remarkable postseason runs by the Girls Varsity Softball and Girls Varsity Soccer teams.

The Lady Pirates softball team put together an outstanding season, finishing with an impressive 28-7-1 overall record and earning second place in the highly competitive Huron League.

Throughout the season, the team showcased consistency, resilience, and strong all-around play, establishing themselves as one of the area's top programs.

Their success carried into the postseason, where Riverview delivered a dominant performance in district competition. The Lady Pirates captured the District Championship with an explosive 15-8 victory over Trenton in the title game. The offensive showcase highlighted the team's ability to come through in key moments and capped off a season defined by hard work, dedication, and teamwork.

Not to be outdone, the RHS soccer team authored a historic season of its own. After finishing fourth in the Huron League and

That statement came in the fonn of the program's first District Championship since 2010. In a tightly contested championship match against Trenton, Riverview secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory, displaying defensive excellence, composure under pressure, and a relentless competitive spirit.

While the softball team overwhelmed opponents with offensive firepower and the soccer team relied on defensive grit, both programs shared the same formula for success: commitment, teamwork, and a belief in one another. Their district championships are a testament to the countless hours of preparation put in by players and coaches alike.

Jersey Mike's Subs was also welcomed as one of Riverview's newest business additions following the opening of its location in Riverview Plaza along Fort Street.

Mayor Swift recognized Manager Chris Atwood and Area Director Chris Lewandowski for successfully opening the restaurant in just eight weeks while already becoming active supporters of local schools and charitable causes within the community.

The Michigan Institute for Neurological Disorders (MIND) was honored for opening its new state-ofthe-art facility on King Road. Mayor Swift said the addition of MIND represented more than economic development, noting the importance of having advanced neurological care available close to home for residents dealing with conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and chronic

The department also completed or processed 154 business inspections, 1,136 building and trade permits, 228 for-sale housing certificates, and 778 rental unit certifications. The city additionally issued approximately 12 new business licenses during the year.

Finance Director Ann Darzniek and the Riverview Finance Department were recognized for improving financial reporting, operational efficiency, and investment perfonnance. Swift highlighted the city's participation in Michigan CLASS, a govennnent investment pool introduced in 2023, which generated approximately $2.1 million in interest earnings for Riverview with an average return rate of 4.782 percent.

The Finance Department also implemented quarterly financial reporting to improve transparency and public understanding of city finances while continuing to manage inflationary pressures, rising infrastructure costs, and long-term environmental obligations.

Mayor Swift also highlighted continued improvements at Riverview Highlands Golf Course, which he again referred to as the "Crown Jewel of Riverview."

Golf operations leadership streamlined internal operations, implemented datadriven pricing strategies, modernized food and beverage operations, improved customer service standards, and began planning facility renovations for the pro shop and back-of-house operations.

The course also reintroduced its Junior 9-Hole League to expand youth programming and continued strengthening Riverview Highlands' reputation as a premier municipal golf destination in the region.

The evening concluded with Mayor Swift thanking city staff, residents, business owners, and community organizations for continuing to work together to strengthen Riverview's future.

He said Riverview's success was built not on any single project or department, but on the people who continue investing in the community every day.

U of M Club of Downriver honors scholarship recipients he University of Michigan Club of Downriver recently hosted its annual scholarship dinner at Arnoldo's Banquet Center. The event celebrated scholarship recipients while also introducing some of the brightest juniors from Downriver high schools to the opportunities available at the University of Michigan campuses in Ann Arbor and Dearborn.

Nearly two dozen Downriver-area high schools were invited to send two junior students to attend the dinner, learn about the admissions process, and explore the advantages of attending a world-class university close to home. Following a group photo of the student guests, the evening officially began with a brief business meeting during which Steve VanEvery and Ray Yee were re-elected to three-year terms on the club's board.

Kelly Cox, Director of Recruitment and Operations for the Ann Arbor campus, spoke about the value of a Michigan education and offered advice on the admissions process, including application timelines and scholarship opportunities for in-state students. Dr. Urana Pridemore, Director of Undergraduate Management at the Dearborn campus, highlighted the unique advantages of the Dearborn campus experience compared to the larger Ann Arbor campus. Both representatives encouraged students to visit campuses early, apply promptly, and continue striving for academic excellence through graduation.

Katie Hartwell, scholarship chairperson for the club, then introduced the four graduating seniors selected to receive $2,000 merit scholarships for the upcoming academic year. Hartwell was assisted in presenting the awards by co-chair Rebecca Markus.

Matthew Bond, a senior at Woodhaven High School, received a new scholarship established in memory of Dr. Don VanEvery and his wife, Lea. Dr. VanEvery founded the Downriver club and was remembered as its "Music Man" for his piano performances and spirited renditions of"The Victors." A music graduate of the University of Michigan who later earned a doctorate in education from Wayne State University, VanEvery also served

as superintendent of Riverview Schools. Bond, graduating in the top 1% of his class, was active in the marching band as a section leader and uniform manager and founded his school's astronomy club. He plans to attend Michigan's College of Engineering.

Ava Gray received the Lloyd Carr Scholarship, named in honor of former Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr. She also earned national recognition for community service and plans to attend the College of Literature, Science and the Arts in Ann Arbor.

Cooper Mears, valedictorian of Belleville High School, received the Kenneth Hartwell Scholarship, named in memory of former scholarship chairman Kenneth Hartwell, a World War II veteran, community leader, and Michigan engineering graduate. Mears has been deeply involved in music programs and FIRST Robotics, where he served as lead programmer, while also participating in National Honor Society leadership. He will also attend the College of Literature, Science and the Arts.

Following the scholarship presentations, attendees watched a 20-minute video celebrating the past, present, and future of the University of Michigan.

Edited by former club president Bill Richardson, the presentation concluded with highlights from Michigan's men's basketball NCAA championship season and the raising of the championship banner at Crisler Center.

The evening concluded with remarks from 2025 Lloyd Carr Scholarship recipient Tommy Cappellino, now a student at the Ross School of Business. In a speech titled "TransforMAIZEtion," Cappellino reflected humorously and thoughtfully on his first year at Michigan, telling the audience, "Michigan didn't just give me an education. It gave me a community, a challenge, a city, and a version ofmyselfl didn't know was possible yet."

The $1,000 Emergency: Could You Handle It Today?

It's a hot summer day in Michigan. Your car's air conditioning suddenly stops working-or worse, your home AC goes out. You call for repairs, and the bill comes back: $1,000.

Now what?

For a lot of folks in our Downriver area, that kind of surprise expense can throw everything off.

And that's not unique to our region-according to the Federal Reserve's Report on the Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households, about 37% of Americans would have difficulty covering a $400 emergency expense using cash or savings.
